Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Simply Underrated.......2007-05-06

Not a whole lot to say about this box set. Skeets McDonald is easily one of the most underrated honky tonkers of all-time. Just great classic country. There is not a lot of releases of Skeets, but every song I heard of his was great, so I ponied up and threw down the cash and crossed my fingers that the box set was going to be all I hoped. If you are on the fence about buying this, don't let the price deter. You won't be disappointed.

If you think $130.00 is high for a music box set, think again!!!
-This one has been worth every penny and more.
Especially for fans of 1950's honkey-tonk country.
I have listened endlessly to mainly the middle CDs, and these recordings are classic quality, and some very addictive tunes.
His vocal style is understated, and (unfortunately) extremely underated.
The more you listen, it becomes clear that McDonald is up on par with the big names (Lefty Frizzel, Webb Pierce and the like).
He very much sounds to me like the vocal delivery of Lester Flatt, (which I dearly love, with Flatt's understated phrasing) IF Lester Flatt was doing hot honkey-tonk.
His vocal style is truly unique, an underappreciated classic.
But dont overlook that the band backing him up on the hot 50s recordings is so good. Brought to mind a Hank Thompson sound. Seemless and professional to a tee, and hot as hell.
If you love the hot hard-core honkey-tonk of the 1950s, dont overlook this gem.
While it's scope is beyond that era, contuing on up to the late 60s... it's all been enjoyable.
Check out the samples, especially on discs 2 and 3.
Some of the best: "You're Too Late", "I Cant Stand it Any Longer", "I've Got a New Field to Plow", "Your Sweet Love is Gone", "Strollin'", and especially "It'll Take Me a Long Long Time".
Also "A Losing Hand" and "I Cant Last Long". All fine hot as fire examples of hot country honkey-tonk that will amaze you and make this soon one of your favorites.

Outstanding Box Set.......2006-10-06

Here's yet another Bear Family Box Set that defines excellence. Skeets McDonald is one of those names you just dont hear anymore.....and that's a real shame. Skeets has a voice that nears absolute perfection, somewhat comparable to a mixture of Wynn Stewart and Joe Carson. Skeets started off with a country sound not unlike Hank Penny and Hank Williams, but soon moved onto a rockabilly sound reminiscent of Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee. But, unlike many artists, Skeets' best sound came in his later years, which are covered by the last 2 CD's of this great 5 CD Set. With such true honky-tonk songs such as "Fort Worth Jail", "You're Not Wicked", and "Molly Brown", the later sounds of Skeets are true Bakersfield Country that surpass even Wynn Stewart (on a good day). The sound on these recordings are excellent, very little static/hiss even in the oldest of the collections; the later Discs sound as if they were recorded yesterday. As with all Bear Family Sets, there's a large booklet covering Skeets' discography and biography. Again, a great set that has to be heard. A+

After reviewing all the available selections, 3 didn't sound like Skeets. They were "You Can't Come Back-Polka", "Make My Dreams Come True", & "The things You Used To Say", but they may have been recorded during a different era of his career than I remember.

Skeets portrays "Country" music as it should sound... with gutsy feeling. Anyone who likes Hank Williams will love this set, because Skeets is in that "pull your heart out by the roots" singing voice! He has the true Country Whine.

I have the album "Going Steady With The Blues", & if just for those selections alone, this would be a 5 Star recording! My album jacket does not list the names of the musicians on that album, but I have always wanted to know who they were. I've suspected that Hank Garland was one of the terrific guitar soloists on it, but never found out for sure. All I know is they truly put the essence of BLUES (my favorite) into those recordings. I guarantee anyone buying this box set will play that "Going Steady" disk til its worn into a dangling spiral mobile! The set is definitely on my "Gonna Get List"! Lila
