Breathtaking.......2005-11-11
KT likes younger men.......2005-01-17
K T wrote or co-wrote all the songs except the opening track, Wall of tears, which is a great song (co-written by the writer of Don't it make my brown eyes blue) but the album gets even better.
The first of K T's own songs, I'll always come back, is a wonderful ballad but the following track, Younger men, is perhaps the best song of the lot, being about the attraction to a middle-aged woman of younger men. While not uncommon in real life, this is an unusual topic for a song. Many American radio stations, run by middle-aged men who felt threatened by the song, refused to play this track.
However the title track, another song with strong appeal to women, got plenty of airplay and became a huge country hit. A couple of very romantic love songs (Do ya, Lonely but only for you) should please the men.
Old pictures (recorded by the Judds before K T became famous), Dr Dr and Two hearts are the other excellent songs that make up the album.
The big hits from this album have since been re-issued on a greatest hits collection (Songs from an ageing sex bomb) but this album is worth hearing in its entirety. If you enjoy eighties country music, buy this - if you can find it.
love the lady.......2004-10-24
Many a tiff was forgotten just by putting this album on,lowering the lights, pouring a glass of wine and s-l-o-w dancing. K.T. you know just when to emphasise a word or note, and your voice can only make one think of a kinder gentler time. THANKS for the memories K.T. and please....COME BACK!

When talking about old-time music, Tommy Jarrell is the real McCoy. Whereas many "old-time" musicians, especially those who had or sought recording careers, updated, polished, and modernized the traditional styles of the mid-Atlantic mountain regions, Jarrell steadfastly refused to alter the fiddle techniques taught to him by his father Ben and other local legends of the Virginia-Carolina border. Thus Jarrell's fiddling has a raw and abrasive sound, although his technique is anything but--it is refined and complex, often mixing in plucked accents with his advanced bowing technique. Like the style of playing, the repertoire mostly dates back to the mid-19th century. Although the 15 songs here are fiddle solos, Jarrell accompanies himself with delightfully offhanded singing and introduces many of the songs with facts about their histories and the tunings he uses. This fascinating record serves as an enjoyable listen as well as a history lesson and an instrumental instruction course. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written. Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.
Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22
That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.
I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.
I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

Two of Country's Greatest Female Vocalists.......2005-01-20
These recordings were made during the 1980's and include remakes of their old hits, covers of country hits of the 1980's, and new songs. I like Melba Montgomery a lot but I absolutely love Norma Jean. Her honey vocals make every song her own and she can sing hits of Hank Williams or Anne Murray with equal ease. The diamond of the collection is a stunning Harlan Howard song called GOD MAY FORGIVE YOU BUT I WON'T that might have put Norma Jean back on the top had this been recorded for a major label.
12 of the tracks are by Norma Jean (songs 1-6, 12-17), the remaining 10 are by Melba Montgomery. Both ladies now past 60 are still singing their hearts out and remain in fine form; Melba has had success in recent years as a songwriter for the likes of George Strait and others and Norma Jean has been one of the leading draws on the Branson, Missouri country music scene for some time now. I'd love to hear both of them record new music but in the meantime this excellent package will more than satisfy fans of these great country singers.

Album Description
As a youngster in Vancouver, British Columbia, Redd Volkaert learned how to play guitar from his dad. By the time he was 16 he was playing in local bars and clubs in Vancouver. After an 8-year stint in Alberta he left the Great North woods for Los Angeles, playing clubs, teaching guitar, and working on demo sessions. Moving to Nashville in 1990, he began doing studio session work and road dates with artists like Ray Price, Lacy J. Dalton, Clinton Gregory, and Dale Watson, eventually winding up in Merle Haggard's band, The Strangers. In fact, out of a long line of prestigious players, Volkaert is the most critically acclaimed of Merle's guitarists. In 1998 HighTone Records released Redd's first solo adventure, Telewacker. Soon to follow was the critically acclaimed No Stranger To A Tele. Guitar Player Magazine stated: "With No Stranger To A Tele, Volkaert showcases his jaw-dropping musicality as he wantonly jumps between hardcore honky tonk, western swing, and rock." In 2000 Redd moved to Austin, Texas, and has quickly become a participant in its thriving live-music scene.Customer Reviews:
Extraordinary guitar pickin'.......2004-09-26
Highlights include the lyrical, twanging swing of "No Stranger to a Tele," the honky-tonk "You're Still on My Mind," the Buck & Don inspired "The Buck Stops Here," and a multi-guitar attack on the classic "Truck Drivin' Man." The latter, along with "She Loves Anything That Swings" and a live take of Voelkert's signature "Telewacker," includes Bill Kirchen, Joe Goldmark and Jack O'Dell as The Twangbangers (whose own album is also available on Hightone). The low-end reverb of "Chee-Z" brings to mind the classic '60s instrumentals of The Shadows and Ventures, and the picking on "Breakneck" shows off Volkaert's incredible technical abilities alongside those of steel player Jim Murphy.
This is a nice overview for those who've yet to learn of Vokaert's charms, but other than the bonus videos (live versions of "Truck Drivin' Man" and "Tube'n"), there's nothing new for those who have his first two CDs and the Twangbangers release.
