Clayton Lee

Editorial Reviews

About the Artist
Clayton took advantage of a misspent youth by gaining the experience to entertain your socks off. When not playing in South Louisiana night clubs, he was working as a high pressure pipe welder on offshore oil platforms. He really learned to "pass a good time" from the fine people of South Louisiana. Clayton left the offshore work several years ago and now devotes his time to his family and his music. The Merle Haggard quote that " You have to hit people in the head, the heart, or the feet" is his inspiration. He writes about interesting characters and situations and puts them to song. Come and "pass a good time" with Clayton!

Product Description
Clayton Lee is not the same guy in the same hat singing the same song the same way. He sings from the place the man who wrote the songs would sing them from, because he did. All the songs on this album are written or co-written by Clayton. Is it roots music, Americana, rock, country, blues, jazz, or swing ? You'd have to say Clayton Lee's music transverses and blends the genres. It's real music, nothing contrived to match the flavor of the month. It's an honest, genuine, party time, foot stompin', howl at the moon, dance with the girl, laugh till your side hurts, cry in your beer, thrill ride you'll be glad you listened to!

1 out of 5 stars Stephen Foster.......2007-05-13

I saw a program on OPB about him so I got this. But, I didn't like it and don't listen to it. It is now under my bed collecting dust.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific choral renditions.......2006-01-27

I own this CD and am especially fond of it for the solos by Thomas Pyle and Clayton Krehbiel, particularly the latter's singing of "I Want to Die Easy." All other soloists and choristers are equally superb, but those two gentlemen, sadly since deceased, were personal acquaintances and musical influences. If you don't have a taste for great choral arrangements, then pass, but you'll be missing out on something special. Enjoy it, you who adore the finest.

1 out of 5 stars Make the exquisite into the mundane.......2004-07-21

Oh, puleeze, this is the sappiest rendition of these gorgeous songs ever recorded, right up there with sing-a-long with Mitch Miller.

I always hate when songs that are meant to be sung intimately as solos or duets are done by 7,000 harmonized voices.

I recommend this recording only to be listened to in a nice comfortable elevator

5 out of 5 stars Great Drinking Music!.......2002-07-20

This CD Kicks ...! BR>The trombone riff in "Camptown Races" is incredible. The screaming axe in "Oh! Susanna" is mind-blowing. The fantastic jamming on this CD reminds me of HMTT. This CD is one monster hit after another. "Steal Away To Jesus", is a real kicker, although not quite as good as "Will You F'n Give Me Jesus".......

Just sit back, pop a cold one, maybe a whiskey shooter , pop this
baby on the victrolla and enjoy.......

Here's to ya Hawks...........

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs.......2000-08-09

This is one of the best recordings of historic American music that I have heard, along with Joel Cohen's "Liberty Tree." The arrangements and interpretations of the songs are very beautiful. Some of the banjos are cheesy, but it is much much better than every other Foster recordings that I have heard. If you are in the mood to hear great music of Antebellum America, than I highly recommend this CD to you. You won't regret it!

Hello from England!....got into Mr. Clayton's music thru' fanzine read-up...never looked back! This ex jet pilot , from Tennesee, had one of the most remarkable voices AND poetic talent , of ALL the 70's revered 'singer-songwriters'!!!! 5 out of 5 stars More than 20 years later, I'm still impressed..........2005-04-19

I heard the album "Naked Child" the first time, when I was about 22 and immediately liked it. Especially songs like "I ride alone", "I love you" (a great love song) and "A little cocaine" were burned into my brain. I listen to all kinds of music (Blues, Rock, Grunge, Folk, Jazz, Punk, depending on my mood) and own several hundred CDs and albums... but now I'm 45 and must say that "Naked Child" and the songs mentioned above are still some of my absolute favorites.

It might be too late for an international career for Lee Clayton (I'm not sure he would liked that anyway), but if I had the money and could get hold of him, I'd invite him to Switzerland for a concert to introduce him to my friends. And yes, I am going to buy a second copy of this CD just to have it in case the first one should break one day.

By the way, in the sleeve note of his album "Another night" there's mention of U2's Bono saying that the only Country-singer that has influenced him was a pretty well unknown fellow named Lee Clayton ! That probably says a lot...

Highly recommended, I would even give it 10 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Dark, strange stuff.......2001-10-06

Before Johnny Dowd and the Chicago/Bloodshot guys were tearing through and tearing up the iconography of country music, there was Lee Clayton.

Jet pilot turned country music singer, Clayton's straightforward, unsentimental phrasing conveys his dark, strange songs very well. He takes gospel, bluegrass and blues images and he stands them on their heads, with strong and authentic effect.

These two records are an excellent introduction to a songwriter's songwriter. Buy these and you'll want more.

5 out of 5 stars Sung Like This, They Should Stay Remembered.......2005-09-30

Commenting last June on CDs featuring the tenor, Kenny Baker, I wrote that his might be the most beautiful recorded tenor voice of the 20th century. My comparison included a lot of fine tenors, but I hadn't heard John Aler. Recently, I have been listening to him as Jupiter in Handel's SEMELE, then as Nadir in Bizet's PEARL FISHERS, and more recently as the soloist for this album. Kenny Baker's voice is pure, limpid, naturally musical throughout his range. The lower part of Aler's range has less music, but the upper part is richer than Baker's, and the whole is tremendously exciting. Nowhere is his voice lovelier than in the first song on this CD, "I Hear You Calling Me." Composed circa 1903, overflowing with love and longing, it became the immensely popular signature-piece in the 1920s and '30s of the Irish tenor, John McCormack. (Who, with less primitive technology, might well have provided the most beautiful recorded tenor voice of the century.)

I found some of the Aler collection quite familiar, others new and highly attractive (where have they been all my life?), and others that are lifted above the ordinary more by the singer's voice and art than by intrinsic merit. The songs are predominantly art or concert songs, composed mostly in the late 19th or early 20th century. Elegant, highly romantic, often ambitious, sometimes sentimental, popular in their time with lovers of semi-classical music, and often performed in concerts by leading singers of the day. Their lyrics include the poetry of Joyce Kilmer, Robert Herrick, Rabindranath Tagore, Shelley, Poe, Yeats, Eugene Field, and Sydney Lanier.

Did Aler get the idea for this CD from the fine baritone Thomas Hampson's CD, "An Old Song Resung"? Hampson's CD (unfortunately out of print), came out in 1990; Aler's, in 1995. The songs in both collections might well have been sung to similar audiences at similar concerts by similar singers. Still, the two CDs have only two works in common: - "Do Not Go, My Love," composed by Richard Hageman in 1917, and "When I Have Sung My Songs," by Ernest Charles in 1934. Both songs are superb, and both singers do them beautifully. I would give Aler a slight edge on the first; Hampson, on the second.

        Album Description

"Don't Worry 'Bout Nut'in'" is a Country by way of Texas & Louisiana, not Nashville, Americana/Country-Rock blend that'll make yer big toe shoot up in yer boot. It's Clayton Lee's brand new album. It features thirteen songs six of which were written or co-writen by the artist. "Don't Worry 'Bout Nut'in'" is an expression familiar to anyone who has spent much time in South Louisiana. It reflects a regional attitude of a people who truly live a "work hard play harder" philosophy. The title song has a New Orleans down and dirty groove to make you want to move.

There's a Louisiana flavored mambo stomp, some Texas boogies, a shuffling tribute to Steve Ripley, a couple of country ballads, and an island inspired song about an insect. It's not contrived to match anything else, it's honest and authentic, not a trite re-hash, but it fits like your favorite boots.

Clayton had his friend Terry Wilson produce this one. Terry's producer credits include Teresa James, David Lynn Jones, and Randy Sharp. As a musician, he's played with Eric Burdon, Johnny Nash, Jimmy Reed, John Martin, and was a member of Backstreet Crawler. His songs have been covered by the likes of Paul Rogers, Maria Muldaur, and Kathy Mattea. The credits and accomplishments of the fine musicians on this album would take pages to list.

So listen to the sound samples. Take a trip down South with Clayton Lee, and "Don't Worry 'Bout Nut'in'"!
