This wonderful five-disc box is an indispensable collection of prewar, prebop jazz that belongs in the company of your finest Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman sets. Technically, this isn't a true box set--it merely collects five single-disc compilations under one slipcase--but it is infinitely rewarding nonetheless. Disheartened by what he thought were sonically subpar Reinhardt collections, Ted Kendall undertook an ambitious mission to find the best original sources for this classic material and then meticulously remastered them. He wisely opted to leave in some of the surface noise to maintain the clarity and integrity of the music. And what glorious, jubilant music it is! Dating to the very first Quintet of the Hot Club of France sessions in September 1934 (before they'd even established that moniker), the collection includes all the landmark recordings Reinhardt made for Ultraphone, Decca (its English and French labels), and HMV up through the Quintet's 1939 breakup on the eve of World War II. Reinhardt's guitar work is spirited and adventurous throughout--lightning-quick runs, insistent rhythm work, and hybrid "riffs" that seem to split the difference. Nearly all the cuts feature the elegant but vivacious violin work of his most famous foil, Stephane Grappelli, who certainly deserves co-billing on the set. The way the two feed off each other's energy is magical. Despite their well-documented personality clashes, the twosome remains perhaps the most synergistic in jazz history, constantly engaging in their incredible cat-and-mouse games. Often overlooked are the songwriting talents of the two musicians, who contributed several standards to the jazz canon. Though mostly focused on the Quintet recordings, the set detours for such oddities as a pair of solo Reinhardt cuts from 1937 and collaborations with Coleman Hawkins. Simply delightful from beginning to end. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:
Wonderful - for the Purists among us.......2007-07-02
The digital re-masterings themselves faithfully reproduce the original sounds, complete with all of the surface noise that attended those early 78's. For the purist this is no problem because the desire is to not have any of the music also filtered. For those who are into casual listening or background music while you drive, especially if you listen at high volume, you might find it a bit distracting.
One of the most delightful aspects of Reinhardt's group is Stephan Grappely's Jazz violin. We don't think of the violin as a jazz instrument very often, but these folks made it work wonderfully in group. Reinhardt shared the lead often with his band and it gives the music a diversity which enables sustained listening without boredom.
Good group, good selections, good music.
Django Reinhardt , Classic Early Recordings.......2007-04-12
he said if he saw it he would know what it was. I have sonically seen
Django and I know what JAZZ GENIUS IS!! He and his consorts swing from
the beginning to the end every time they do a tune. Being an un-recon-
structed Stan Kenton fan of some 60 + years, I recognize that except
for some Shorty Rogers charts and particularly "Stompin' At The Savoy"
by Bill Holman, Django could have made even the Kenton band swing! How
he could swing so hard with a wounded wing is an education. If you dig
jazz or think you might, this is the ONE to buy.
Tout Sweet.......2007-01-08
The Classic Early Recordings of Django Reinhardt is one of the best deals in the entire Amazon jungle. From sound quality to song selection to sheer quantity, this superb 5-CD set recreates a whole environment; it transports you to another place and time. Perhaps the only flaw is that Stephane Grappelly does not get equal billing - the real magic of this music is found in the interplay between these two giants.
It is tempting to say that Reinhardt was the Hendrix of his generation; it is perhaps more accurate to say that Hendrix was the Reinhardt of his generation. Django Reinhardt, (believed by some to be the best guitarist ever), belongs in the same pantheon with Art Tatum and Charlie Parker - he exhibited almost Faustian brilliance, worlds beyond other players. Green bananas are advised to remember that everything Reinhardt played - he actually played - these recordings were made long before technology took the place of talent.
Reinhardt's style is extremely athletic, he strums as if he is trying to rip the strings off. Lightning-quick riffs are tossed off almost thoughtlessly, creating a vibrant, racing energy. Grappelly's elegant, lyrical violin is the perfect counterpoint, where Reinhardt drives, Grappelly soars. As staggeringly fast as Reinhardt is, Grappelly never strains to keep up, his work here establishes him as heavyweight champ of jazz violin. This music is relentlessly joyful, upbeat, and sweet. While it is always possible to analyze it for sheer technical virtuosity, the temptation to fall under its magical spell is far greater. Absolutely enchanting.

if you have the mosaic and you're wondering..........2006-05-05
if you have the mosaic swing/hmv set and you're concerned about overlap, go ahead and get this set. there's only about a disc and a half of overlap. 3 1/2 hours' worth of non-duplicates, of sessions which preceded those in the mosaic and, even better, the complete paris and london decca sides from '38-39. restoration-wise, these are a little noisier than the mosaic, but also sweeter top end. different approach, i like both. pure joy.

Album Description
More than just sea chanteys, maritime musical tradition encompasses an ocean of songs from people who have lived and worked on the water. Onboard are Folkways favorite singers-Dave Van Ronk and the Foc'sle Singers, Lead Belly, and Paul Clayton and many more. Classic Maritime takes you from the folk songs of Martha's Vineyard down to the Bahamas and beyond. Compiled and annotated by Jeff Place. Extensive liner notes, a whopping 32 tracks, 68 minutes of music!Customer Reviews:
Wonderful sample of maritime songs and chanteys.......2007-01-11
water-soaked tunes.......2004-05-31
This is, as one would expect, a satisfying collection, not just for the performances but for the usual well-informed annotations and documentation. This grizzled folk fan learned a few things I didn't know, such as that "Run, Come See Jerusalem" -- once a folk-scare standard, done nicely here by the X-Seamen's Institute -- was written in 1929 by Blind Blake. No, not that Blind Blake, the bluesman/songster from Florida whose first name was Arthur, but the Bahamian singer Blind Blake, born Blake Higgs. I also learned that "Hilo" in the song "Johnny's Gone to Hilo" (here "Tommy's Gone to Hilo") is not in Hawaii, but in Peru (the port city of Ilo).
A small number of performances don't move me much. Tom Wisner's original, all-too-well-intentioned "Chesapeake Born" strikes me as purely cornball in that distinctively gooey Pete Seeger sort of way. Alan Mills and the Shanty Men perform in what sounds, at least to my ear, in so stilted, theatrical a fashion as to remind the listener why sea shanteys are so often parodied and ridiculed. (Admittedly, they're here for all of :36, in a mercifully brief "Paddy Doyle's Boots.") Done right, shanteys are wonderfully affecting, and most of the singers here do them proud. There are also a few ocean-going ballads, the standards "Greenland Whale Fisheries," "The Sloop John B," "Lord Franklin," and "The Handsome Cabin Boy," whose subjects range from the wryly comic to the heartbreakingly tragic.
If you already love this sort of thing, you'll want this album. And if you're looking for one representative anthology of maritime folk music to fill a hole in your collection, this one will do just fine.

This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.

A gentleman musical agreement! .......2006-03-16
But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.
Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.

Product Description
Off the Record offers an amazingly fresh and simple alternative--one that proves to be a definitive step in presenting these truly classic sides. By special arrangement with Archeophone Records, Off the Record is proud to present all 37 issued titles by the Oliver band, newly transferred from the best available original sources, issued on two compact discs. Engineer and master sound recording restoration specialist Doug Benson--known for his definitive work on "The Complete Hit of the Week" on Archeophone Records--and David Sager--jazz historian and trombonist--have searched far and wide to gain access to the cleanest copies of all the Oliver discs, including the unique copy of "Zulus Ball" and "Working Man Blues." Using a meticulous musical ear, a wide variety of styli and the subtlest application of digital technology, Benson, perhaps for the first time, has revealed the natural ambience of these discs. Unprecedented Detail and Clarity: The Oliver ensemble has never been heard to better advantage. Passages long accepted as muddy and indistinct pour forth with unprecedented clarity. Even the introduction of the ultra-rare "Zulus Ball," often lamented for its poor condition, shines through crystal clear! Straight off the discs with as little processing as possible: There is no better way to bring these old discs to life than with the right stylus, a sensitive ear, and careful application of non-invasive processing. Whereas many reissues are marred by over-processing, resulting in muffled sound and/or digital artifacts, Off the Record has judiciously applied just enough non-invasive technique in order to remove ticks, pops, harsh resonances and other unwelcome noise--leaving the music to speak for itself. Expertly Speed Corrected: Just because we call them "78s" doesn't mean that they really are. Sound recordings from the early days of sound recording rarely spin at exactly 78 rpm. Back in those days there was no standardization regarding speed; often discs ran aCustomer Reviews:
Renovating An Old Master.......2007-07-15
If you're coming new to Oliver, don't be misled into thinking that these recordings are raucous examples of a primitive music form. As the perceptive liner notes state (and these octogenerian recordings underline) "Oliver's band was first and foremost a dance band, as were most jazz bands of the day".
If you're already committed, you'll find the effect of hearing these recordings anew is analogous to that of viewing an Old Master after the accumulated dirt of the centuries (which we took for granted as part of the picture) has been removed and the original colours stand revealed in all their glory.

Outstanding Transfer: Best So Far!.......2006-12-23
Irregardless, I like hearing King Oliver's sound. It's just great to listen to. I would also highly recommend this particular King Oliver CD, to other reviewers who are not sure just which copy to purchase. I remember hearing a lot of great talk about the Milestone issue [which I have] and this one definetly puts it to shame. I really did not realize how different the sound quality was on the Milestone issue, but after listening to this CD, WOW, what a difference! This is the one to purchase [for now anyway].
Some of the sounds on this particular recording are to name just a few: JUST GONE, CANAL STREET BLUES, MANDY LEE BLUES, CHIMES BLUES, WEATHER BIRD RAG, DIPPER MOUTH BLUES, FROGGIE MOORE, SNAKE RAG [a great one] SWEET LOVIN' MAN, HIGH SOCIETY RAG, SOBBIN' BLUES, WHERE DID YOU STAY LAST NIGHT, DIPPER MOUTH BLUES, JAZZIN' BABIES BLUES, ALLIGATOR HOP, and a lot of other great, great sounds. There are 37 tracks in all, and once again, I believe that these are the BEST King Oliver sounds that I have ever heard on CD. I highly recommend this particular CD to those who like the jazz sounds of the 1920s. My favorite era of jazz runs from about 1923, to the early 1930s. Not that the later periods are not good, I just like the sound of jazz during this particular era.
About As Good As It Is Ever Going To Get.......2006-11-30
On to the CD at hand: I've heard the other sets (Milestone, Retrieval) and this one is much better since you can hear the individual players more distinctly than the other sets. I'm sure future sound restoration techniques can extract even more information from these disks but I think we are approaching (or have approached) a limit as to what can be pulled from these records.

Essential Otis Collection.......2007-04-05
I Can't Quit You Baby, Three Times A Fool, Groaning The Blues, and many others remind you why he's been such an influential guitarist, and why people like Eric Clapton love him work.
This is a collection worth owning for the blues guitar fan.
Music good, sound ok.......2007-01-07
These recordings were made 50 years ago and dont sound bad by any means, but thats why it got 4 stars only. I realize they may not have had too many resources to use recourding these tracks back in 1956, but this was probably the fault of the engineer. Distorted guitar can work if thats what youre going for, but when the vocals are distorting then its time to turn down the level! Otis Rush sounds great here though...I cant recommend something else that sounds better - so go ahead and pick this up. Dont expect super high fidelity though.
Every review here is 5 stars .......2004-08-11
Blues at it's best.......2004-06-17
Magnificent.......2003-11-29
That song was penned by Willie Dixon, as are several of these late-50s singles which Rush recorded for Eli Toscano's Cobra label, but Rush was a more than able composer himself, and he is the man behind some of the best songs on this CD, including "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)", "Three Times A Fool" and "Keep On Loving Me Baby"; superb, sophisticated blues tunes which often eclipse Dixon's.
Otis Rush' brand of blues is less rough and boisterous than the music of Howlin' Wolf, but not as polished as that of B.B. King, and he was a major source of inspiration to Stevie Ray Vaughan, who named his band after Rush's song "Double Trouble", and did a great rendition of "All Your Love".
His intense vocals and stinging lead guitar playing is reminicent of Buddy Guy and Magic Sam, and if talent was everything and luck and timing never mattered, Otis Rush would currently be hailed as the reigning king of Chicago blues.
Alternating between smouldering slow blues and swinging up-tempo numbers, this is one of the truly essential albums in any blues collection. If Rush had never recorded another note, his reputation would be intact based solely on these eight singles.

Ellington's band had more grace and sophistication, but no big band swung harder than the incomparable Basie band. Recorded between 1937 and 1939, these 63 classics feature a cornucopia of legendary musicians: Herschel Evans' big-toned, earthy tenor balances Lester Young's ethereal tenor. Harry "Sweets" Edison's soaring blares complement Buck Clayton's muted trumpet. Jimmy Rushing's nasal, booming operatics contrast with Helen Humes's precise elegance. The Freddie Green-Walter Page-Jo Jones rhythm section flawlessly anchors the driving 4/4 rhythm. And, of course, there's the leader's minimalist piano, using just the right, essential mix of boogie-woogie and stride. These three CDs are peppered with what would become jazz standards and should be a cornerstone of any music library. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

Almost perfect.......2005-12-03
for all who have ears.......2004-02-04
Basie's band is here fresh from Kansas City. Its approach is simple. The greatest rhythm section in the history of Jazz, Basie, Walter Page, Joe Jones, and (first Claude Williams followed by the classic) Freddie Green set the tempo, lightly to hardly swinging, the sections come in, and then the great soloists of this orchestra Buck Clayton, Herschel Evans, and the great Genius Lester Young come in to make some of the greatest performances in Jazz history. The tunes, particularly on the first CD are triumphs of the blues based "head arrangements" that were the stock in trade of Kansas City Jazz.
We aksi gave the magnificent singing and swinging of the incomparable Jimmy Rushing and later the singing of Helen Humes.During the first year or so of the Decca contract Billie Holiday was Basie's female singer. However, because she was already signed with Columbia-Brunswick she never recorded with the band. What a tragedy that we only have three air checks from radio of Billie with this band, none on this CD.
It should be noted that on the last set of recordings here after Herschel Evans died, the great Tenor man Chu Berry joined the band to later be replaced by Buddy Tate. The competition between Evans and Young was the stuff of legends, but the blowing battles that triumph between Berry and Young on Cherokee and Lady Be Good on the last CD here is as good as it gets in 1930s Jazz.
How can you choose between the tracks or selections with the smaller collections of Decca Basie do you select One o'clock Jump over Jumpin' at the Woodside, Texas Shuffle over Good Morning Blues, no you can't. There are a lot of gems here that aren't as widely known and do nto appear in smaller compilations. The most import are the many sides with only Basie's piano supported by the rest of the rhythm section. If you are serious about playing, jazz, blues, or swing or just music, particularly if you play a rhythm instrument, program these sides on your CD and try to play along. Just listening without playing is a real education in blues and swing.
The rhetoric is of course that later the band got to be more and more of an arranged band and less swinging than this. I don't agree with that at all. However, there is a gritty bluesy magic here that does tend to float away after they left Decca.
Of course, the sad history of these recordings is that Decca signed Basie to the three years of these recordings for 700 bucks before Basie got to New York and realized what the orchestra could mean. It took the union and lawyers John Hammond found to get Decca to pay the band members union scale for these classic sides. It's also evident if you compare the last of these Decca sides to the first Columbia sides that Decca wasn't as concerned with the recording quality of these records as Columbia. But that's life under capitalism, great art getting ripped off by big money.
There is simply no excuse for anyone with ears not to have this collection. The sides aren't just great art or necessary history, they are fun, they are moving, and they are going to put a song in your heart and a smile on your face!
Superb, and great sound........2004-01-05

Album Description
This collection of old-time social and instrumental string-band music spotlights instrumental prowess. Old-time music features playing styles that pre-date bluegrass, emerging from the string band tradition stretching back to the early years of United States history. Both African-American and Anglo-American ingredients are at its core, the banjo having African origins, the fiddle European. Some of the most revered sources of old-time roots music-Dock Boggs, Roscoe Holcomb, Wade Ward, Tommy Jarrell, and more-are heard playing in their original styles. The Grateful Dead's cover of "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down" and Bob Dylan's rendition of Clarence Ashley's "Little Sadie" clearly attest to the continuing influence of these songs. Compiled and annotated by Jeff Place.Customer Reviews:

mountain music at its peak.......2003-05-11
The performances come from both rural and revival artists, but the difference is academic, and the two meld into a seamless whole. Inevitably, a few songs are old, albeit never unwelcome, reliables, such as Dock Boggs's "Country Blues" and Clarence Ashley's "Little Sadie," but there are plenty of surprises, too. One has Maybelle Carter and Sara Carter Bayes reunited in the 1960s to do, interestingly, a song associated with the Delmore Brothers. The wonderful late-1960s LP -- never reissued in its entirety as a CD -- that Cousin Emmy recorded with the New Lost City Ramblers is tapped for an energetic, assured rendition of "Bowling Green" (also memorably sung elsewhere by the revivalist duo the Kossoy Sisters, and not to be confused with the Everly Brothers song of the same name). Roscoe Holcomb's "Trouble in Mind" is almost disorienting in its intensity, transforming a familiar song into something else entirely. There's Wade Ward's rocking banjo instrumental "Chilly Winds" (aka "Going Down This Road Feeling Bad") and Etta Baker and Cora Phillips's gorgeous banjo/guitar duet "Jaybird March." And there's everything else, too. If you're looking for mountain music at its peak, Smithsonian Folkways has -- as usual -- brought you there.

Album Description
This album features powerful performances by legends Lead Belly, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Brownie McGhee, Mike Seeger, Pop Stoneman, Cisco Houston, and Rosalie Sorrels, among others. Elsewhere, National Heritage Fellowship Award winners Elizabeth Cotten and Doc Watson, who has won six Grammy Awards to date, are represented. Of the 29 tracks on the album, a full 21 appear on CD for the first time, all newly remastered by Grammy winner Pete Reiniger. Bookended by actual recordings of trains from the 1950s, the compilation evidences the continuing influence of these essential American ballads, work songs, blues and broadsides. "Midnight Special," represented here by Lead Belly, has been covered by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Paul McCartney, and Van Morrison. Alt-country band the Old 97s named itself after "The Wreck of the Old 97," which has been interpreted by Johnny Cash and John Mellencamp, among many others. The compilation also includes iconic American songs "Rock Island Line," "John Henry," "Wabash Cannonball," and "Railroad Bill," all presented here in riveting performances. Bluesman Furry Lewis, who sings about the legend of "Kassie Jones," actually lost a leg to a railroad accident in 1917. Grammy winner Jeff Place compiled and annotated Classic Railroad Songs from Smithsonian Folkways, which also contains rare photographs from the Library of Congress. Classic Railroad Songs from Smithsonian Folkways is the ninth entry in the label's Classic Series and serves as a doorway into Folkways' incredible catalog of recordings. The Classic Series, which has covered blues, bluegrass, folk, and mountain music, among other genres, also illustrates the role Moses Asch and his Folkways label played in preserving a vital piece of American history. December 6, 2005 marks the 100th anniversary of this American documentarian's birth.Customer Reviews:

Swing is everywhere these days, but it's seldom played with the consummately relaxed skill heard here, with Hyman leading a mid-sized band of celebrated veterans. Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, Milt Hinton on bass, and Butch Miles on drums make up a perfect swing rhythm section, while the horns provide vitally individualistic sounds and ideas, from Joe Newman's sly, muted trumpet to Joe Temperley's gruffly sweet baritone saxophone. The repertoire provides an authentic portrait of the swing era, from the energetic "Moten Swing" through Ellington's "Dooji Wooji" and Fletcher Henderson's beautiful "Soft Winds" to the pop songs of the day, like "Moonglow" and "Them There Eyes." Hyman displays the same musicianship apparent in his solo piano recordings, making wondrous use of space to let the rhythm section shine through. --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:
gentle but serious and intense music.......2003-08-18
Highlights: Them There Eyes, Hyman and Frank Wess and rhythm -- as good a tenor solo as I have heard in several years); Topsy, piano and rhythm; the fine work by Joe Wilder (not Newman!)
A really fine record. I have the companion disk on order...
Exceptionally well-recorded - stunning!,.......2001-03-13

One of the best.
Quality, Quality, Quality!.......2000-07-28
If you are a casual listener of swing music you will appreciate the way each track is complemented by the tracks that precede and follow it. The arrangements and engineering form a cohesive whole. This CD is well suited to casual listening throughout.
Or, if you are a dyed in the wool Audiophile you will enjoy the quality of the recording itself. This is as good as CD sound gets. The CD is recorded using the HDCD recording process but will also shine on a standard CD player. The DYNAMIC sound and large soundstage evident on this recording really captures the live Big Band sound and puts a lot of the swing recordings out there to shame.
But of course it is the quality of the performances that are the real gem on this CD. Some of the best musicians in Big Band are represented here. If you love instrumental Big Band you will love "The Age of Swing".
There really aren't any negatives to "The Age of Swing", it fires on all cylinders and appeals to the casual listener, the audiophile, and the Big Band fan. I highly recommend it, you won't be disappointed.
