Amazon.com essential recording

More so than most country artists, Willie Nelson is difficult to thoroughly investigate without delving into his individual releases, which often revolve around either musical or lyrical concepts. So give Columbia credit for assembling such a cohesive, provocative collection, one that covers every aspect of his glorious career and that amply showcases his distinctive singing, songwriting, and gut-string work. Disc 1 (entitled Pilgrimage), worth the price of admission alone, focuses on his remarkable 1970s and early-1980s work: the Red Headed Stranger cuts, the Lefty Frizzell tributes, the Stardust standards, searing live cuts, the Electric Horseman cowboy odes and Honeysuckle Rose gems, and the best of Always on My Mind. Disc 2 (Sojourns) pairs Nelson with an impressive array of partners: Haggard, Price, Miller, Pierce, Charles, Young (both Neil and Faron), Santana, Possum, Dylan, Cash, Snow, Jennings, Julio, Dolly, Kristofferson. Disc 3 (Exodus) collects the mid-1980s and early-1990s stuff, and while it contains moments of brilliance, it doesn't match up to the first two discs. All in all, a marvelous 60-song collection filled with an astonishing number of spine-chilling moments. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars An American Country Music Icon........2007-02-24

Willie Nelson "Revolutions Of Time 1975-1993", along with Johnny Cash's "Legend", may be two of the most important boxed set country music releases ever put out by Columbia Records. Willie Nelson is by definition, a back to basics Americana dust bowl straight to your heart country singer. This boxed set ia divided into three discs, complete with 16 #1 hits. Every Nelson classic is here to enjoy. Willie has always been a bare bones singer never in need of over-production, or fancy overdubs. The simplicity of "Blue Skies", sets the tone for this magnificent boxed set full, of layed back beautiful compostions that go straight to the heart. Disc 2 is priceless, as Willie is joined by the many artists who have collaborated with him over the years. Names like Neil Young, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Leon Russell,Carlos Santana, Waylon Jennings and Bob Dylan are just a few of the many artists who appear on this set, and join Willie, for a good ol' sing a long. Some of the highlights include, "Good Time Charlie's Got Then Blues", "City Of New Orleans", "Blue Skies", "On The Road Again", "Always On My Mind", "Whisky River', "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain", Highywayman", and a real gem of a song "Heartland", that he duets on with the legendary Bob Dylan. This handsomely packaged 3 cd set is a complete retrospective of an artist who between 1975-1995, was at his commercial and artistic peak, and will go down in the annals of country music as one of the elite icons of American music.

5 out of 5 stars THESE ARE THE WILLIE NELSON SONGS HISTORY WILL REMEMBER !.......2007-02-15

Willie Nelson's career as a singer songwriter now spans some 50+ years, and he continues to entertain his appreciative fans with recordings and concerts to this very day. This 3 CD collection captures the best songs from his glory years, 1975-1993. These songs are Willie's legacy, his gift to the world. Sure, Willie has recorded other important albums ("Shotgun Willie") and hit songs ("The Great Divide") in years other than these, but these are the songs Willie is especially loved for. The box is divided into three sections (the early years, collaborations, and the later years). All are equally satisfying, with strong selections, start to finish, on all three. I only have one minor complaint about this set and that is the omission of the "Funny How Time Slips Away/Crazy/Night Life" medley from "The Sound in Your Mind" album. That has always been, and still is a big part of Willie's stage show, a crowd favorite, and even though other versions of these songs are included here separately, the medley should have been included, too. Other than that, this set is perfect, with an entertaining book full of pictures, and all nicely packaged in a long box digi-book. These are Willie Nelson's most important and memorable songs.

5 out of 5 stars Willie Nelson proves he can sing any song with anyone........2007-01-09

When Willie sings with Julio Englasia "To all the girls I've loved before" their voices meet, blend into one magic voice, seperate and come together again delighting the ear and satisfying the soul. A few songs later we hear Willie and Ray Charles sing the tragic love ballad "Seven Spanish Angels" and appreciate how powerful voices combined with the key sounds of Mexico can transport the listener across the Rio Grande and time itself to become part of the story. On another disc we hear Willie in a live performance of "Angel flying to close to the ground" and we solemly vow to attend the next Willie Nelson concert no matter what.
This collection continues on displaying the genius of Willie both as a singer and musician with the rare talent of timing and inflection that has earned him the title of one of America's most treasured icons.

5 out of 5 stars Super!.......2006-09-25

I have enjoyed all of the music on these CDs. The one I like the very best is the one of duets. There is such a wide range of talent singing with Willie. The songs in this set are the ones that have made Willie stand out from all the rest. Don't hesitate a moment - buy it before it goes "through the roof" in price.

5 out of 5 stars "It's Better Than I Thought".......2004-05-28

Not having any of Willie's really old stuff (late 50's & the 60's) I wasn't sure to even purchase this set. I found it for $25 bucks and thought "Why Not". Of course everyone has heard most of the songs in this set - even if your not a real Hillbilly - but after playing the CDs I was glad I spent the money. The selections really sound great ,crystal clear and perfect. This is a high quility collection. I have many, many of Nelson's LPs but nothing sounds as good as this does. I can really apperciate these newer songs (1970s and up) while listening with perfect sound. I wish all my new CDs were as good to hear as this set. I also think its cool having Willie doing duets with the likes of Webb,Mererl, Johnny and Waylon. If you love this type of music or just like occasional Honky Tonk sounds or even care for hits from other Artists like "Ray Charles" done by Willie then you need to get this Box Set ! note: As always Willies' guitar picken is second to none and it really sounds great on most or these recordings ! "Enjoy"

Best known for his work as a songwriter, producer, and talent scout, singer-bassist Willie Dixon essentially built Chicago's Cobra and Chess labels with his sweat. Although this double-disc set does include five performances by the man from Vicksburg, Mississippi, himself, it's really a testament to his songwriting prowess, packed with recordings that made his tunes classics of blues and early rock & roll. There's Howlin' Wolf tearing through "Spoonful," "Little Red Rooster," "Evil," and "Back Door Man." There's Muddy Waters belting "You Shook Me," "Hoochie Coochie Man," and "I'm Ready." There's Bo Diddley delivering "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover" and Koko Taylor launching her career with "Wang Dang Doodle." The set features excellent liner notes, and its only disappointment is that its label-centricity excludes Dixon's work for Cobra with then-youngsters Otis Rush and Buddy Guy. --Ted Drozdowski

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Original recordings of Willie Dixon's songs.......2007-06-22

Like many blues musicians, Willie Dixon had an interesting background. He was born, and spent his childhood, here in Vicksburg. He never had formal music education, but a local carpenter taught him harmony singing. Dixon sang bass in a local gospel quartet. Along the way, he served a couple stretches on Mississippi prison farms. He started his career as a heavyweight boxer in Chicago, but switched to music and played bass, part of the time as a house musician.

Dixon started out as a studio bass player with Chess Records when it was a fledgling company started by the Chess brothers. The present set includes 36 songs written by Dixon, and performed by a variety of artists in addition to Dixon including Muddy Waters (Hoochie Coochie Man, etc.), Howlin Wolf (I Ain't Superstitious, etc.), Bo Diddley (Pretty Thing, and You Can't Tell a Book by its Cover), Koko Taylor (Wang Dang Doodle) and many others.

The boxed set is a must addition for your collection if you have a serious interest in blues. It also makes a good gift.

I would note that the Vicksburg Blues Society and others served as co-sponsors of the Willie Dixon Wang Dang Doodle Blues Festival held in Vicksburg in 2006. The City of Vicksburg has added a Willie Dixon mural to the murals on the Mississippi River floodwall near Catfish Row (the southern end of The Delta). The mursl, featuring the legendary Blue Room in the background, was painted by the noted mural artist Robert Dafford under the sponsorship of local blues patrons Ray and Nancy Neilsen.

5 out of 5 stars A lesson in blues music.......2007-01-31

This set was my introduction to the *real* blues, and to not only Willie Dixon, but Muddy Waters and others featured in the set. For newcomers to the genre, it includes a wide array of rythms and styles in the blues category, showing its depth and richness. Lots of danceable selections, but more importantly, ALL genuine blues. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars old master of the blues.......2006-07-03

the willie dixon chess set is a window into the early blues
that was the basis for some of the most well known rock and
roll songs of all time. from led zeppelin to the kinks willie dixon and his music was a source of inspiration and musical reinvention. sometimes you have to stay true to your roots. its
an incredible journey into the heart of original blues.

5 out of 5 stars Willie Dixon was a maestro of imense proportions.......2006-05-29

I never have understood how some people have an inate quality for music and some don't. Well , Willie was one of those that definately did. It is hard to imageine the blues without the likes of Willie Dixon: the writer, the musician, the producer, the businessman. I listen to his work over and over again , each time learning new nuances I did not hear before.

How incredible is that ?

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Chess Blues.......2006-01-18

This box is a fantastic introdution to post-war Chicago blues and the key figure behind Chess Records' success, Willie Dixon. I am a huge fan of the Chess box sets, and this one is my favorite. With seminal tracks by blues icons like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Bo Diddley and Koko Taylor as well as lesser known artists and Dixon himself, this CD is definitely on my deserted island list. If you're only going to have one blues CD in your collection (which would be a tragedy), this is the one to buy. Best of all, for the quality and quantity of music, you can't beat the price!

1 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2007-02-07

I was so disappointed with this cd set. The quality of the recording is very low, songs are bad, overall nothing good to say.

1 out of 5 stars A Rip-Off Indeed............2004-03-09

I should have heeded the warnings here. I don't mind so much that this is NOT really the highwaymen together, although I'm not sure that Waylon is singing all the songs attributed to him. But the recording is really poor...it sounds like they recorded it in an echo chamber. I openned the package, played one song and didn't want this anymore. Note that they don't allow you to sample the music online (that should've been a clue for me) and you can't return CD's. Henceforth, if I am not certain of the album quality and can't listen to a preview, I ain't buying it. Period.

2 out of 5 stars ..........2001-09-12

Please be warned, as this CD isn't about the Highwaymen singing together! They've just put some songs that they sing on their own together on one cd!
With the music is nothing wrong, but this isn't the Highwaymen we're talking about!
There are a few songs on this CD that they claim are being sung by Waylon, but I suspect they aren't, really! I'm not the best Waylon-knower, but I know how he sounds like a bit, and it doesn't even come close!

2 out of 5 stars Too Much Bad Stuff Weighs This Boxset Down.......2006-08-08

There is no doubt that there are some real gems on Nashville Was The Roughest that would be hard to find anywhere else. But of 8 Cd's, most of the good stuff could be filed down to one, perhaps two Cd's.

The only albums of Willie Nelson's early career (before he shifted to Atlantic Records) that are really solid are Country Willie and Yesterday's Wine. All the other albums have a couple of good songs here or there, but mostly just fall flat- with boring tunes and very typical production of that time in Nashville.

This box set is definitely a testament of a great artist who started with a plenty of talent but with very little self style. On different records you can hear him imitating anything from Roy Orbison, Ray Price, Bob Willis, and even LA's 1960's psychedelic rock. He finally started coming into his own on Yesterday's Wine, which oddly enough doesn't sound too far removed from the sound of Country Willie, but with a more soulful earthiness.

There's no question that he really came into his own when he went to Atlantic and recorded Shotgun Willie and Phases & Stages back to back.

Nashville Was The Roughest is most certainly for completest, if you are interested in his early recording career there are plenty of "best of" compilations from during his RCA period.
Also of note are the recordings he did for Liberty records in the early 60's before he signed with RCA.

5 out of 5 stars Help me for Texas In My Soul.......2002-01-25

Disc 7 of this album, 1st 11 songs is what I need. Texas In My Soul was the name of the album - released as an 8-track, then copied to a cassette, played so much, some songs ruined. Tried to have professional studio convert to a CD, but still isn't right. Have researched on Amazon, but cannot find this album. Is there any way to get just disc 7?? If so, please quote price. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars A stunning album.......2001-05-17

The tracks originally recorded for the „Phases and Stages" album („Phases And Stages", „No Love Around", „Come On Home", „Sister's Coming Home", „Down At The Corner Beer Joint", and „I'm Falling In Love Again") are the highlight of this set. These recordings are absolutely unbelievable. „Phases And Stages" has always been one of my favorite Willie albums, but I believe if the whole album would have been recorded the same way as those few tracks, „Phases And Stages" might have become Willie's breakthrough album rather than „Red Headed Stranger". With just Willie on guitar, Bee Spears on bass and Paul English on drums, the sound is so intense and haunting, I haven't heard anything like that in a long time. I am convinced if Willie would have brought out „Phases And Stages" just like that it would have chanced the history of country music. Now maybe that sounds like a heavy statement, but I am convinced it is true. If anybody out there contemplates whether or not to buy this box, just do it. And if anybody needed further proof that Willie Nelson is a genius they could find it in these tracks.

5 out of 5 stars WILLIE IN HIS SONGWRITING PRIME.......2000-03-25

Merle Haggard said in an interview that if he had to be jealous of one person in country music, that person would be Willie Nelson. Merle must have been thinking about some of the songs on this box set when he made that remark.

I have to agree with the music fan from Philly that this box set is a major release even though reviews have been less than stellar. It's not great from start to finish by any means but the critical reviews I've read have made too much of the lowlights and not enough of the highlights. The lowlights have mostly been attributed to "The Nashville Sound" which Chet Atkins, Willie's producer for some of this box set material, has been credited with pioneering. Country purists usually have a tough time with the Nashville Sound because it employs "violins" (not fiddles) and bland backup choirs. You will find that sort of thing on this set even though it wasn't the best setting for Willie. Chet Atkins has admitted that he didn't produce Willie properly but was forced to experiment because Willie just wasn't selling in this period. But the Nashville Sound is not the whole story of this set by any means.

Four songs into Disc 1 you have one of the greatest Willie songs of all time, "I Never Cared For You", and not a violin or choir in earshot. I first heard this song on Willie's recent "Teatro" album but the box set version is much better. This song is just the tip of the iceberg as far as quality songs are concerned. However, you have to be patient and really listen to these discs to get to the gems. On Disc 2, for instance, there is a great version of "San Antonio Rose" and a not-so-good, poppier version only two songs apart. The moral of the story is you don't know when or where you're going to find great songs. Besides the highlights listed above, I'd list some other standouts as "December Day", "Wild Memories",the Vietnam-themed "Jimmy's Road", a cover of Fred Neil's "Everbody's Talkin" (all Disc 4), "I Gotta Get Drunk", a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" (both Disc 5), and "Rainy Day Blues" (Disc 6). You'll find many more.

The bonus to this box set is the vintage mid-60s live Willie concert recording on Disc 8. If you're a Willie fan, you know Willie was never a musical snob or purist with tunnel vision when it came to doing material. The cover versions of the Joni Mitchell and Fred Neil tracks listed above as well as all the material on the classic "Stardust" album from the late 70s attest to Willie's eclectic tastes. On this live disc, Willie is already covering the recent (at that time) "Yesterday" by the Beatles. Again, the live recording is a real bonus.

If you're a big Willie fan and have the dough to plunk down for this box set, it is well worth your investment. It's not a greatest hits in that everything in terms of artistic quality or even sales is programmed back-to-back. But some of Willie's greatest songs, artistically speaking, are definitely found throughout these discs.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Willie.......1999-11-18

Does anybody out there realize what a major release this box set is? Apparently not, judging by the reviews, which seem to be lukewarm and condescending, at best. To my ears, much of this is as innovative and unique as anything in country in those years and Willie was in superb voice through all of it. The April, 1965 sessions were especially "right"; the recordings were as good as Willie (or anyone else) ever got it. Definately worth the cost and shows that the Nashville Sound was more than just excess chorus and strings. And oh yeah, the songwriting ain't half bad, either.

5 out of 5 stars Revolutions of Time: The Journey 1975-1993-Willie Nelson.......2007-05-08

I found this set of cds by accident when I was looking for a particular song on the album that Willie does with Dolly Parton. I was thrilled to check out the songs and find out just how good this set was. I am a die hard country fan and this is one of my favorties!!

5 out of 5 stars Great American Icon.......2005-06-21

Willie Nelson is a musician without peer in my book. This compilation is probably close to my absolute favorite box set and it converted me into a serious fan of Willie's music. So much attention has been put onto country legends after Cash's recent success, and I personally think that Willie Nelson is just as good and worth the same attention. And he continues to find excellent artists and promote them by playing or recording them like Los Lonely Boys or Spoon. Don't miss his art.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant collection of Willie's best music.......2002-12-29

This boxed set is a repackaging (at a lower price) of an earlier boxed set. Although I have the original set (which opens like a hardback book, with the CD's inside the covers), the track listing and sequencing is identical. As far as the music is concerned, it clearly demonstrates that Willie could sing many different types of song. Nevertheless, most of them fall into two main categories - the country songs and the classic oldies from the Great American Songbook.

The songs from the Great American Songbook were originally released on his albums Stardust, Somewhere over the rainbow, Without a song, What a wonderful world and an album he did with Leon Russell (One for the road) - five albums that Willie recorded which were devoted entirely to these songs. The songs chosen for this collection include Blue skies, Georgia on my mind, Summertime, Mona Lisa, Harbor lights, Without a song and Ole buttermilk sky. Most (if not all) of the original albums from which these tracks are taken are still available. There is also a double-CD, All the songs I've loved before, which is dominated by these songs, only including a few country songs.

On this collection, there are plenty of country songs, including Willie's covers of Blue eyes crying in the rain, If you've got the money I've got the time and City of New Orleans. The middle of the three CD's is devoted to his duets with many different singers. You could fill several CD's with Willie's duets without including any guest twice, but the ones chosen for this selection offer an excellent representation of this aspect of his career.

Some people say that a collection like this does not Willie Nelson justice, because so many of his albums were themed. My answer to that is that this provides a great sampling of his career. After playing this a few times, you can decide which aspect of his music you like best and explore that in greater depth.

5 out of 5 stars Diversity is the best of life........2002-03-14

Other reviews of Willie's albums (The Great Divide, The Rianbow Connection) seem to want to label him to do a singular genre of songs, while he demonstrates his diversity and the diversity of fans who wish to sing with him. Willie is lengendary and continues to add to his legends and myths. I don't want the " Same O's" (same old thing morning noon and night or even a whole album through);give me new; give me change; give me Willie.

    5 out of 5 stars Willie's Best.......2001-09-24

A series of Willie Nelson concept albums originally rejected by his record company forms the basis for a fascinating anthology. Willie Nelson: A Classic & Unreleased Collection includes Sugar Moon, an unreleased album of Western swing classics recorded with Merle Haggard's band, the Strangers; a would-be sequel, Willie Sings Hank Williams; the likewise unreleased Willie Nelson Live at the Texas Opry House; and unissued outtakes from various sessions, early songwriting demos, plus his very first single. First offered for sale in 1994 on the home-shopping channel QVC, an expanded, annotated version has finally been made available to retail outlets. The set brings to light a treasure trove of Nelson's unreleased work for Atlantic Records, to which Nelson was signed in 1972 by legendary R&B producer Jerry Wexler to launch a new country division. Atlantic only released two Nelson albums, but outtakes from those sessions include such highlights as a boisterous, R&B arrangement of Tillman's "I Gotta Have Something I Ain't Got" powered by Al Green's Memphis Horns and a spirited sprint led by David Bromberg through the swing instrumental, "Under the Double Eagle." The Atlantic legacy also yields the Texas Opry House performance, which would have been a landmark had the label not folded, scuttling release plans. Nelson had just entered his peak years, and he was touring with an all-star band that included fiddler Johnny Gimble, steel guitarist Jimmy Day, and harmonica whiz Mickey Raphael. Nelson is at his best on stage, and the highlight of this show was an impromptu segue from Nelson's "Bloody Mary Morning" into Bob Wills's "Take Me Back to Tulsa" and back again. --Geoffrey Himes

The cuts from "Live at the Texas Opry House" are worth the price for this set, especially the "Bloody Mary Morning>Take Me Back to Tulsa>Bloody Mary Morning" (I challenged anyone to sit still while listening to this track!). "Willie Alone" and "Willie Sings Hank Williams" as well as "Atlantic Recordings" make this a great collection of rarities and hard to find sides. HIGHLY recommended! Thanks Willie.

3 out of 5 stars Should be called "Whatever we could get".......1999-12-29

A very mixed bag -- basically what Willie owned the rights to and what they could get cheaply. Usual Rhino nearly-unreadable tiny-type-on-black- background booklet -- good text in the booklet though. His first two singles are very good. Unreleased tracks interesting. One can see why the Hank album was not released -- notes say it was done very quickly with people who were hanging around. Music Hall selections are OK -- a little rough. Like one published review says: "There's no compilatory rationale whatsoever..." Glad I got it but was somewhat let down.
