The likes of Yo-Yo Ma, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Joshua Bell, and Mark O'Connor can be heard on Heartland, a compilation featuring the best tracks from Sony's ongoing Appalachian-themed series of CDs. Individually, these folk and classical stars have little in common, but when they meet to play these new bluegrass-meets-chamber-music arrangements, the results are pure magic. It's hard to pinpoint these Americana-tinged tunes--they could fit in either Carnegie Hall or a grange hall--but they're all great; this is as much Aaron Copland's version of roots music as it is Bill Monroe's. Whether on fast-and-furious breakdowns such as "Death by Triple Fiddle" or on mellow, almost New Agey instrumentals such as "Sliding Down" (featuring Bela Fleck on the banjo), these musicians excel. Guest vocals by James Taylor and Alison Krauss break up the instrumentals, though instrumental virtuosity is the real highlight of this disc. If you like what you hear on this sampler, check out the Grammy Award-winning Appalachian Journey next. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

All pompadour, cheekbones, and a trademark "twangy" sound that boomed like it was recorded at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Duane Eddy was rock & roll's first guitar-hero. Beginning with "Moovin' n' Groovin" (1957), the combination of Eddy's hollow-body Gretch, Bigsby vibrato tailpiece, a tremolo unit, and oceans of echo racked up dozens of hits. The best ("Rebel Rouser," "Forty Miles of Bad Road," and "Dance with the Guitar Man") are also typical--Duane twangs a simple melody over some yakkety sax and much excited yelling in the background. As such, his worldwide influence on a generation of guitar-pickers was massive. Eddy returned to the charts in 1986 when the U.K. studio collective, Art of Noise, collaborated with him on an electronic cut-and-paste version of "Peter Gunn" (he'd first recorded the tune 26 years earlier). Incidentally, the 40 songs on this 2 CD set include several previously unreleased mid-'60s blues and early-'80s superstar sessions that are hipper than the hits. Nevertheless, Eddy remains a master of tone, timing, dynamics, and--most importantly--feel and expression, and there's not a single day goes by that some session leader doesn't call for "a Duane Eddy-type" guitar sound. --Don WallerCustomer Reviews:

I Only Get to Give 5 Stars?.......2006-05-18
Though both discs are quite good, Disc 1 is immortal. The early Meters specialized in easygoing funk instrumentals that groove mightily without being overpowering. "Cissy Strut" in my opinion is the best, but it is hard to choose among so many great songs. "Chicken Strut" is the funniest rock recording I have ever heard.
Disc 2 is spottier, but "They All Ax'd For You" is one of the most charming songs ever written about New Orleans, and "Hey Pocky Way" and "Fiyo On the Bayou" have bass lines so wicked that they have been pillaged by just about every hip hop DJ on the planet.
This set is absolutely a can't -miss.

Love it. Wow........2004-06-21
Open up for the meter men!!!.......2004-04-21
There is so much butter and cream on this comp it just makes me weak in the knees. Do yourself a favor and learn what hip hop producers have known for about a generation or so- The Meter's are rhythm incarnate!
The first CD makes this worth it alone- you get damn near all The Meter's hits from the Josie years! Cd 1 has 26 tracks of their early material, all their top ten R&B hits from 1967- 69, and quite a few more. Look-ka-py py, Ease Back, Cissy Strut and Sophisticated Cissy among them. I mean c'mon- 26 tracks on THE FIRST CD ALONE!!!!
CD 2 does less for me, but gives a good display of The meter's output for Warner/Reprise. This was a time period that saw the band go through some changes and also play as the opening band for The Rolling Stones' 1975-76 tours. On these tracks Cyril neville (Art's brother) replaces Zigaboo on drums and it shows, I think... The material here consists of longer cuts and more diverse styles, ultimately I prefer the Josie material, but you should check it all out and make up your own mind...
Over 45 tracks of the kind of funk usually reserved for immortals and denizens of the lower planes of funky good times. For about 30 bucks that's like 66 cents per cut. Brother please. If you buy 1 'Best Of,' retrospective set this year- make it this one. Then go get the JB's 'Funky Good Time.' Now you've got a party.

Dick Dale was already on the way to a full-scale comeback when Quentin Tarantino's film Pulp Fiction turned Dale's 1962 hit "Miserlou" into a major sensation. But there is much more to the King of the Surf Guitar than one hit, as this definitive anthology amply demonstrates. Better Shred Than Dead features instrumentals that show off Dale's dazzling, percussive technique and Middle Eastern and Latin influences ("Let's Go Trippin'," "Hava Nagila," "Miserlou," "Spanish Kiss") as well as some lesser-known vocal numbers. More recent material is also included, such as his 1987 duet with Stevie Ray Vaughan on "Pipeline," plus material culled from the first two albums of his comeback years and various other sources. All hail the king, back on his throne after far too many years. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:
If you own ONE Dick Dale title, this is the one!.......2007-05-08
Starting with Cut 4 (Let's go Trippin') you hear the emergence of the surf sound and Dick Dale's trademark fast picking is heard in early form. From there on, you quickly hear the historic development of the King of the Surf Guitar. Classics like Miserlou, Surf Beat, the Wedge and many more turn up in quick succession, all of them a bit better (in today's terms) than the one before.
If you're a guitar fan, there's a lot to like in Dick Dale's music. The emphasis is on fast multiple picking and relentless energy - just like the surf and sea he says he emulates in his music. The one common aspect across these cuts is the energy level which never drops.
The disc set is roughly chronological, although some early cuts appear later in the disc set. By the 7th cut on disc one (Miserlou) the quality of the recordings has generally improved and the fullness of the music can be heard more clearly. From there on, it's an energetic ride through some of the finest surf ever recorded. The ride includes Stevie Ray Vaughn in an unforgettable duet with Dale on Pipeline, much of the music Dale has written in the last 15 years, and even includes a nice re-make of Hendrix's Third Stone From The Sun, supposedly originally written as a tribute to Dick Dale when he was near death from cancer.
Those who enjoy the music will be pleased to hear that Dick Dale is still touring, and seeing him live is like hearing his recorded music magnified 100 times. His volume, energy and tireless attack are part of his mystique. He's an absolutely unique performer who bring more to his music than the notes. His website with tour schedule can easily be found online.
This is a highly recommended CD set, and if you only own ONE Dick Dale title, this should be the one.

2. Don't Ask My Neighbor: a great song, you can't help but sing along.
3. Let It Be Me: another classic song, but it's different when Bobby sing it.
4. Once upon a Time: a very romantic song, just listen to the melody.
5. Don't Lead Me On: a unique "doo-wop" style, we don't hear it often nowadays.
6. Baby, It's Cold Outside: a marvelous duet between Bobby and Vanessa Williams, another uplifting song.
7. Good to Me: a brand new song and a very touching one.
But these are just some of his masterpieces. To get the "real thing", you simply MUST BUY this CD! You won't regret it!

For the latter half of the '60s, Davie Allan and the Arrows were the kings of teen exploitation film soundtracks, recording a score of them for A.I.P. and other independent studios. The core of that work revolved around Allan's manic, buzz-saw fuzz guitar (typified by The Wild Angels' "Blues' Theme," a national hit), which was to the '60s biker genre what Morricone was to the spaghetti Western. This treasure trove of Allen's decades-unavailable recordings for Mike Curb (his high school choir-mate turned producer and record-biz mini-mogul) mark the first time most of the collection's 40 rare tracks have been anthologized for CD. Allen has long been one of instrumental rock's most unsung heroes, a pioneer of nascent garage punk and tripped-out psychedelia who shrewdly informed the primitive crunch of Link Wray with a savory taste for Mancini's melodicism, taking the unlikely, electric mélange on the often downright experimental flights of multitracked six-string aggression chronicled here. Culling single sides and album cuts, this collection charts the Arrows' explosion from early, SoCal surf-rooted innocence into the wildly inventive sultans of the sonic psych-out that powered Devil's Angels, Born Losers, Wild in the Streets, and the other cult '60s soundtracks that form the bulk of this collection. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Through exclusive arrangement with Curb Records, Sundazed is thrilled to announce the release of the ultimate, fuzzed-out `60s gems by the legendary Davie Allan & The Arrows! Davie Allan & The Arrows recorded the most frenzied instrumentals the world has ever heard! Allan's fuzzed-out guitar was an audio compass pointing towards freedom, sex, danger and violence, his trashy fretboard riffs exploding behind flickering celluloid images of cycle runs, biker fights, drug freakouts and rubber-burnin' hot rods. The myriad of Arrows' recordings is filled with loud, loose and savage tracks, and includes the mega-hit "Blues Theme" from the trashy Roger Corman flick, The Wild Angels. Allan's recordings were originally spread out over four studio albums, a bevy of impossible-to-find singles, and more than a dozen rare soundtrack appearances from 1965-68, thus defusing his long overdue recognition. To restore Davie Allan to his rightful place atop the ranks of fabled guitar gunslingers, we have lovingly compiled a 40-track, double CD/28-track, double LP gatefold-edition anthology that rounds up the best of Allan's 45s, sizzling album cuts, and many mind-splattering widescreen rarities along with a full-color 16-page booklet filled with a full band history, interviews with Davie, producer Mike Curb, original Arrows members, plus unseen photos, original album graphics, AIP poster reproductions, and more!Customer Reviews:

Well it was Davie Allan & The Arrows that did most of 'em and now Sundazed has finally released many of those Tower singles and LP tracks that have so looong been out of print. The only ones that have even seen the light of day on CD were the ones from THE WILD ANGELS (1966) soundtrack that Curb released a few years back.
The only big drawback is that each of the CDs in this 2-CD collection only contain about 40 minutes of music apiece, thereby leaving out some wonderful instrumentals from RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP and other late 60s drive-in fare. That's why I can't give it 5 stars.
Still it's good to see some of this stuff out there and they sound great, too. Check it out!

Vibalicious!! .......2005-08-27
Polydor did a hell of a job compiling and choosing the perfect songs for this project. For one can only imagine what it must've been like to select and choose what would be included, especially since Roy has so many terrific songs. I guess they settled on a little dash of everything, from the very funky, the very soft, the very electric and the downright jazzy!
Roy Ayers is the man, always has been and always will be..he's the cream of the crop and at the top of the heap, with tasty songs like "Running Away, Searchin', Freaky Deaky to putting his spin on the classic "You Send Me," which by the way, runs a full (8) plus minutes! This set also includes the often sampled: Everybody Loves the Sunshine! Another song draped in greatness! Whew! They just don't do it like this anymore. This is truly a best of and some...
Enjoy Roy...and given the opportunity, rush to see him perform Live. It's a treat for the soul and spirit. He is one of the few artist that I know (ala Maze f/Frankie Beverly) that can still sell out a show, every single time out! He's definitely, Mr. Consistency!
One can never go wrong with Mr. Ayers in their collection.

A Compendium of Revueltas Works.......2003-04-09
This current CD is part of the Centennial celebration of Revueltas. It consists of a compilation of orchestral recordings by Eduardo Mata, chamber recordings by David Aetherton and the Jalapa Orquestra Sinfonica under Herrara de la Fuente. The results are quite stunning, with enough material to keep you listening for quite some time!
The first CD contains exclusively orchestral music under the baton of Maestro Mata. This is prime stuff indeed. The CD begins with Revueltas' most renowned piece, Sensemaya, a dense, barbaric orchestral fantasy inspired by a Cuban poem that details a traditional snake-killing ceremony in the Santeria religion. The piece is dominated by short pithy melodic statements which are gradually layered over each other to create greater and greater tension. The result is deeply compelling, Stravinsky's Rite is combined with Varese's Arcana...with native Mexican rhythms and instruments thrown in.
The other works on the album are also extremely compelling. They can be broken down into abstract orchestral works, chamber pieces and music for film. In addition, Revueltas shows two definate sides, one is the convinced modernist, who shows a lot in common with Varese, and even Scriabin. The best work in this vein is the Danza geometrica (and it's chamber version Planos). The other big vein is the "nationalistic" vein, of which Revueltas was a greater exponent than his compatriot Chavez. Many works on this CD, Itinerios, Homage to Garcia Lorca, and others display a sense of wild abandon present in traditional fiestas. And yet, even here, Revueltas is a formalist and modernist, treating his material less as color and more as another structural element.
The other really wonderful work on this disc is La Noche de los Mayas. Culled from a film score, this is beautifully written film music and quite ahead of it's time. It's not hard to imagine these Revueltas strains as an inspiration to Bernard Herrmann, Elmer Bernstein and the like. The work is structured as a large symphony, dominated by a broad, tonal but dissonant theme in the brass. There is a wealth of detail in this work that I come back to over and over.
Much of this material has very little competition. The chamber works have been basically neglected on CD and many of the orchestral works are only available on this disc. Sensemaya has significant competition however. Salonen has done a really wonderful disc of this material, which also includes a great reading of Noche. Bernstein has perhaps the best reading of Sensemaya available on his Latin American Fiesta album (which also includes a wonderful rendition of Chavez' Sinfonia India)But Mata's reading is nearly as good as Bernstein and just as good as Salonen. Overall, for breadth and depth of music covered, this is a superlative disc and the one to get.
Abstract but deep........2003-02-05
This cd pretty much has all of Revueltas' major works including his most known one: Sensemaya. That piece has been conducted by Bernstein and Stowkowski with the latter being on this disc. There is two performances of Sensemaya which includes the one mentioned above and a new version.
The best piece I believe is Janitzio. If you are Mexican you will be reminded of Mexican big bands because Revueltas incorporated the sound into this piece as well as imitations of a Mariachi band. It is a very abstract piece but very remenicent of Mexico. Excellent cd as a whole.
The cd includes a booklet with information on Revueltas and the pieces on this cd.
