The likes of Yo-Yo Ma, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Joshua Bell, and Mark O'Connor can be heard on Heartland, a compilation featuring the best tracks from Sony's ongoing Appalachian-themed series of CDs. Individually, these folk and classical stars have little in common, but when they meet to play these new bluegrass-meets-chamber-music arrangements, the results are pure magic. It's hard to pinpoint these Americana-tinged tunes--they could fit in either Carnegie Hall or a grange hall--but they're all great; this is as much Aaron Copland's version of roots music as it is Bill Monroe's. Whether on fast-and-furious breakdowns such as "Death by Triple Fiddle" or on mellow, almost New Agey instrumentals such as "Sliding Down" (featuring Bela Fleck on the banjo), these musicians excel. Guest vocals by James Taylor and Alison Krauss break up the instrumentals, though instrumental virtuosity is the real highlight of this disc. If you like what you hear on this sampler, check out the Grammy Award-winning Appalachian Journey next. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars A piece of heaven.......2006-02-01

Heartland is a haven and a piece of heaven. I was transported.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2004-03-16

Great violin, appalachian music, brings out your country roots, beautiful song by Allison Krauss, good mix of slow and up beat songs, excellent cd!

3 out of 5 stars A bit of a yawn-er.......2003-04-22

If you are planning to open up a high-end gift shop specializing in handcrafted wind chimes and micro-bakery scone mixes and the like, then you must have this CD playing for your customers. It might have a certain appeal there that it did not find in my living room. Not to say that the musicianship is not utterly outstanding, which it is most certainly. Aside from Short Trip Home, which is why I purchased this CD in the first place, I found the rest of the pieces somewhat vapid considering the caliber of the artists. Again, it has its appeal in an easy listening realm, but this was not what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisitely good music!.......2002-05-04

Didn't expect an outstanding cd, don't know exactly why i got it,maybe because of yo yo and bela, but every piece is played
beautifully, even the vocal piece by James Taylor. The album is almost too good to be called Heartland, every piece is a class act. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!.......2001-11-09

I drive alot commuting to and from my job. This music has served as the perfect backdrop to an lovely Indiana fall! I'm sure I'll recall those colorful images as I continue to listen to this CD through the colorless days of winter!

Some of the best electric guitar rifts you'll ever hear. Incredibly impressive work. These CDs blew me away, and I never say that about any albums. They're that good.

5 out of 5 stars Joe Take me Away!.......2007-02-15

I don't know if this is the best of Joe Satriani works, but it's definitely one of my favorite Cd's of all time! I can highly recommend this compilation to the first time listner, or the Vintage Joe Satriani fan.
From Big Bad Moon to Clouds Race Across the Sky, or The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing to Crystal Planet...it will take you to another dimension - for all you Time Travellers.
Without a doubt, Joe Satriani is one of the Worlds Finest guitar virtuoso's - if not the Finest! So sit back and let the music take you away to another realm[s]it's the best trip in the cosmos!

5 out of 5 stars The electric joe satriani an anthology.......2007-01-03

this is one of the greatest compilations ever i am a huge satriani fan and seriously i strongly recommend it to any satriani fan!!!For people who are new to his work they will be very pleased with it since it has such a range of songs from the very beginning until now.An absolute must!!

2 out of 5 stars Surfing with the Master........2006-07-10

This CD is a great collection of one of Rocks best gutar players. I've been a great fan of Joe Satriani ever sence I heard "Big Bad Moon"* (*Track eight on the C.D.)and have enjoyed many other pieces of his career.

4 out of 5 stars As electric as it gets.......2006-03-05

This may or may not be the only Joe Satriani CD that I ever buy but as an anthology it is very good to have in my music collection. Truthfully, I bought this set on a whim. Earlier in my music listening/collecting I had heard about Satriani, Malmsteen and Vai but owned nothing by any of them. Now I have all three and must say that Joe Satriani is the best of the lot. This is a very worthwhile set to own if you aren't a big fan but want a taste of his talent in one clean sounding package.

All pompadour, cheekbones, and a trademark "twangy" sound that boomed like it was recorded at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Duane Eddy was rock & roll's first guitar-hero. Beginning with "Moovin' n' Groovin" (1957), the combination of Eddy's hollow-body Gretch, Bigsby vibrato tailpiece, a tremolo unit, and oceans of echo racked up dozens of hits. The best ("Rebel Rouser," "Forty Miles of Bad Road," and "Dance with the Guitar Man") are also typical--Duane twangs a simple melody over some yakkety sax and much excited yelling in the background. As such, his worldwide influence on a generation of guitar-pickers was massive. Eddy returned to the charts in 1986 when the U.K. studio collective, Art of Noise, collaborated with him on an electronic cut-and-paste version of "Peter Gunn" (he'd first recorded the tune 26 years earlier). Incidentally, the 40 songs on this 2 CD set include several previously unreleased mid-'60s blues and early-'80s superstar sessions that are hipper than the hits. Nevertheless, Eddy remains a master of tone, timing, dynamics, and--most importantly--feel and expression, and there's not a single day goes by that some session leader doesn't call for "a Duane Eddy-type" guitar sound. --Don Waller

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Duane Eddy anthology.......2007-06-10

Though rather overpriced, this was the only Eddy compendium that included all his major hit releases, at least to my knowledge. It was a "Best of" I had searched for for some time so the $30-plus price tag was worth it to me. Audio quality I suspect was as good as the original masters allowed. However, the engineers at the label obviously didn't leave much room for improvement. It was, in the day, AM radio quality. Not much to be improved upon. Liner notes were excellent.

4 out of 5 stars And now...the art of Duane Eddy; the noise of twang!.......2007-04-07

Guitarist Duane Eddy is rock and roll's all-time #1 instrumentalist. He had 28 chart singles, which is much more than any other rock instrumental performer. This 2 CD set features most of his biggest hits, plus some of his best rarities. It's a solid collection that will appeal to fans of instrumental rock.

4 out of 5 stars there's just one thing.......2006-03-15

nice try, rhino.

5 out of 5 stars the one we want.......2005-12-26

This is the cd that we Duane Eddy fans really want!Sure, it is a little bit pricey, but, we don't have any other choice as far as I can see for original songs, and such a large collection of music, and to go along with all this is a little booklet with lots of pictures and information about Duane and the music, and the individual songs on this cd set.If you're looking for Duane Eddy cd that will not disapoint, this is it.This is an excellant collection put out by Rhino and is one fans don't want to miss.

5 out of 5 stars A major influence for early rock guitarists!.......2005-03-18

This box set by Rhino offers every worthy cut by Duane Eddy, who remains an underated influence on rock music. From 1958 to 1962, I couldn't wait for the latest Duane Eddy record. He had hit after hit. Every aspiring rock guitarist with a little elbow grease could play along with these fine recordings. This 2-disc set covers his entire career including some later recordings, but his heyday (1958-1962) covers every single record and even the flip sides too (which were always good).
"Twang Thang" is a must for anyone who loved those classic rock records from that period or for any student of early rock. My Favorites: Rebel Rouser, Cannonball, The Lonely One, Theme from Pepe, 40 Miles of Bad Road etc. etc. Oh, the sound is superb. And the great booklet in the box set features recording dates, personnel and many photos. Thank, Rhino! Great Job!

5 out of 5 stars I Only Get to Give 5 Stars?.......2006-05-18

I have a modest CD collection of about 300 albums, but I can honestly say that I have played this set more than any other I own. There is nothing, anywhere, like the Meters. They are cool and funky, relaxed, funny, smooth, sexy, firey, bitter and sweet, and altogether perfect.

Though both discs are quite good, Disc 1 is immortal. The early Meters specialized in easygoing funk instrumentals that groove mightily without being overpowering. "Cissy Strut" in my opinion is the best, but it is hard to choose among so many great songs. "Chicken Strut" is the funniest rock recording I have ever heard.

Disc 2 is spottier, but "They All Ax'd For You" is one of the most charming songs ever written about New Orleans, and "Hey Pocky Way" and "Fiyo On the Bayou" have bass lines so wicked that they have been pillaged by just about every hip hop DJ on the planet.

This set is absolutely a can't -miss.

5 out of 5 stars Must Own.......2005-10-10

Not Much to say here. Anyone interested in New Orleans Music, or Funk, will love this. It is just so Rich.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best Meters collection out there..........2004-12-13

Omitting historical details (there are plenty of those out there on the 'Net), this is simply: the best overall collection from one of the finest artists in the genre----pure, natural FUNK the way the Gods intended it to be!

5 out of 5 stars Love it. Wow........2004-06-21

Unbelievable collection of songs, great funk music. I'll never get tired of these cd's. I highly recommend getting this as its much better than the single disc greatest hits, this really covers everything. The Meters are definitely one of the most influential funk acts, if you aren't into funk, you will be after hearing this. Wow.

5 out of 5 stars Open up for the meter men!!!.......2004-04-21

The Meter's were there from the start. They are funk (they still kick it out today, known as The Funky Meters, with 1/2 of the orignial band still doin it). If you want into the secrets of New Orleans Soul, look no further. Their style encapsulates, fathoms and transcends blues, soul, R&B and funk. This is band so tightly honed they make every jawbreaking funk break sound like an effortless display of catwalking sexiness... Leo Nocentelli's jangly and percussive guitar, Art Neville's fever-hot organ chops, George Porter's thick-ass porterhouse steak basslines- ever-fluid but omni-deep, and lest we forget the backbone- Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste's boom-boom-CRACK! The drums, tighter than hell, you will not believe what one man can conjure with a fairly simple drumkit. The breakdown on 'Chicken Strut' will make you mop your forehead.

There is so much butter and cream on this comp it just makes me weak in the knees. Do yourself a favor and learn what hip hop producers have known for about a generation or so- The Meter's are rhythm incarnate!

The first CD makes this worth it alone- you get damn near all The Meter's hits from the Josie years! Cd 1 has 26 tracks of their early material, all their top ten R&B hits from 1967- 69, and quite a few more. Look-ka-py py, Ease Back, Cissy Strut and Sophisticated Cissy among them. I mean c'mon- 26 tracks on THE FIRST CD ALONE!!!!

CD 2 does less for me, but gives a good display of The meter's output for Warner/Reprise. This was a time period that saw the band go through some changes and also play as the opening band for The Rolling Stones' 1975-76 tours. On these tracks Cyril neville (Art's brother) replaces Zigaboo on drums and it shows, I think... The material here consists of longer cuts and more diverse styles, ultimately I prefer the Josie material, but you should check it all out and make up your own mind...

Over 45 tracks of the kind of funk usually reserved for immortals and denizens of the lower planes of funky good times. For about 30 bucks that's like 66 cents per cut. Brother please. If you buy 1 'Best Of,' retrospective set this year- make it this one. Then go get the JB's 'Funky Good Time.' Now you've got a party.

Dick Dale was already on the way to a full-scale comeback when Quentin Tarantino's film Pulp Fiction turned Dale's 1962 hit "Miserlou" into a major sensation. But there is much more to the King of the Surf Guitar than one hit, as this definitive anthology amply demonstrates. Better Shred Than Dead features instrumentals that show off Dale's dazzling, percussive technique and Middle Eastern and Latin influences ("Let's Go Trippin'," "Hava Nagila," "Miserlou," "Spanish Kiss") as well as some lesser-known vocal numbers. More recent material is also included, such as his 1987 duet with Stevie Ray Vaughan on "Pipeline," plus material culled from the first two albums of his comeback years and various other sources. All hail the king, back on his throne after far too many years. --Daniel Durchholz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you own ONE Dick Dale title, this is the one!.......2007-05-08

The first three (and chronologically earliest) tunes on disc 1 are from Dale's pre-surf period in which he was a singer who also played guitar; they are a bit dated and only big fans of 50's music are likely to really enjoy them. Also, the sound on the first few cuts is not as full as the later cuts. However, they set the stage for where Dick Dale came from, making it even more impressive to know where he went.

Starting with Cut 4 (Let's go Trippin') you hear the emergence of the surf sound and Dick Dale's trademark fast picking is heard in early form. From there on, you quickly hear the historic development of the King of the Surf Guitar. Classics like Miserlou, Surf Beat, the Wedge and many more turn up in quick succession, all of them a bit better (in today's terms) than the one before.

If you're a guitar fan, there's a lot to like in Dick Dale's music. The emphasis is on fast multiple picking and relentless energy - just like the surf and sea he says he emulates in his music. The one common aspect across these cuts is the energy level which never drops.

The disc set is roughly chronological, although some early cuts appear later in the disc set. By the 7th cut on disc one (Miserlou) the quality of the recordings has generally improved and the fullness of the music can be heard more clearly. From there on, it's an energetic ride through some of the finest surf ever recorded. The ride includes Stevie Ray Vaughn in an unforgettable duet with Dale on Pipeline, much of the music Dale has written in the last 15 years, and even includes a nice re-make of Hendrix's Third Stone From The Sun, supposedly originally written as a tribute to Dick Dale when he was near death from cancer.

Those who enjoy the music will be pleased to hear that Dick Dale is still touring, and seeing him live is like hearing his recorded music magnified 100 times. His volume, energy and tireless attack are part of his mystique. He's an absolutely unique performer who bring more to his music than the notes. His website with tour schedule can easily be found online.

This is a highly recommended CD set, and if you only own ONE Dick Dale title, this should be the one.

4 out of 5 stars A true anthology.......2007-05-07

This two disk collection of Dick Dale's music is really one you need to have if you are a Dick Dale fan. It has been very well put togther with good production and some of the best music of its type you will ever hear. I love it.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-08-04

Two CDs which contain a whole lotta shredding. A nice informative booklet fills you in on the fact the Dick Dale was a revolutionary force in rock and roll. Includes the song that Travolta and Thurman did "The Batman" to in Pulp Fiction.

5 out of 5 stars An American Master.......2004-06-04

Not for the weak, this compilation is absolutely essential to anyone who is interested in rock guitarists. We are blessed that this artist is still both recording and touring. Dick Dale is a visionary who lives his life on his own terms. His live shows are highly recommended. This man is an American legend.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishingly Great.......2003-10-11

This is simply a great, great collection of music. Dale's career is astonishing--he was ahead of the "curve" in the early 1960s, and is STILL putting out remarkable music. This 2-disk set by no means contains "everything" of importance, but it's THE essential place to start. Dale combines the "surf" sound with many other flavors and influences: the blues, Latin-American, Mideastern, and Native-American traditions, for example. What brings it all together is the sheer joy and energy of his playing. The sullen intensity of "Angry Generation" (recorded in 1965!) is a particular favorite.

What a discovery! I vaguely remember Bobby Caldwell from my sixth grade days, back in 1991, when he did a duet with Marilyn Scott, "Back to You". That song was just beautiful and timeless. Then recently, I heard "Real Thing" on the radio, and I instantly fell in love with it and can't stop playing it in my head! I did some research on the net, and found out that he has released many albums before, even before I was born... So I ran to the nearest CD store, and bought Timeline (too bad his CDs are hard to find here), so that way I get to hear all the greatest hits from him... And what a great CD it is!

Here's some of my favorites:
1. Real Thing: no wonder it's a big hit, especially here in Asia. It's very catchy and very uplifting.
2. Don't Ask My Neighbor: a great song, you can't help but sing along.
3. Let It Be Me: another classic song, but it's different when Bobby sing it.
4. Once upon a Time: a very romantic song, just listen to the melody.
5. Don't Lead Me On: a unique "doo-wop" style, we don't hear it often nowadays.
6. Baby, It's Cold Outside: a marvelous duet between Bobby and Vanessa Williams, another uplifting song.
7. Good to Me: a brand new song and a very touching one.

But these are just some of his masterpieces. To get the "real thing", you simply MUST BUY this CD! You won't regret it!

If you like Vai, of course you know a lot of the songs. The live stuff is also very cool. It is a great value since it has so much content.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Starter CD for Vai Fans.......2006-06-29

I'm a big Steve Vai fan, and this CD is a good place for fans who want to get a small taste of what Steve is like. It doesn't offer up the cream of his works, for that you have to span his whole catalog. But still this is a great place to start

I recommend this as a start then branch of to his full albums and even the live stuff, like the DVD Live at the Astoria London and even the G3 DVD's.

4 out of 5 stars Good Explorer CD.......2005-12-17

If you heard of the great Steve Vai, and heard stuff like "He's awesome but his music sucks!" This cd is for you. Not only does it show a big variety of the way he plays, but it has his best songs. So that away you can enjoy the songs without having some of those songs that are really weird. To be honest these two cds have some of my favorite songs ever written. If you like solo guitar music or instrumental music, I would recommend this cd to you. If not I would tell you to download a few songs from this cd online, and if you like it then go buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music - Poor Quality.......2005-09-15

Love the music but there is some very irritating high pitched "harmonics" or something on "For the Love of God".
None of the other reviewers mentioned this, do I have a lemon CD???
This is the first Steve Vai music I've ever bought and I think it's awesome. I'm way over 14 years old too!!!

5 out of 5 stars Steve Vai has crept up to my upper echelon of guitarists. .......2005-03-24

In buying this album, I knew what I was in for, but also it gave me a good retrospective overview of the past present and future of progressive metal guitar. I would say that the Zappa and prog element is there enough with the shred/metal element to call much of Vai's solo material Prog Metal. He has a mastery of tone, melody (ok maybe not as much as Becker or Roth) and instrumentation that is probably on par with noone since Hendrix, since they both are in outer space as far as their unique visions. As Yngwie took Roth and Blackmore and surpassed them tenfold (well maybe not Roth), Vai has taken Van Halen in paticular (the liquid, spacey, tapping sound as well as other things) and taken it to another universe all together. A double album worthy of repeat listening and influence, Anthology sums up a killer career. The only thing missing is some of the David Lee Roth stuff.

For the latter half of the '60s, Davie Allan and the Arrows were the kings of teen exploitation film soundtracks, recording a score of them for A.I.P. and other independent studios. The core of that work revolved around Allan's manic, buzz-saw fuzz guitar (typified by The Wild Angels' "Blues' Theme," a national hit), which was to the '60s biker genre what Morricone was to the spaghetti Western. This treasure trove of Allen's decades-unavailable recordings for Mike Curb (his high school choir-mate turned producer and record-biz mini-mogul) mark the first time most of the collection's 40 rare tracks have been anthologized for CD. Allen has long been one of instrumental rock's most unsung heroes, a pioneer of nascent garage punk and tripped-out psychedelia who shrewdly informed the primitive crunch of Link Wray with a savory taste for Mancini's melodicism, taking the unlikely, electric mélange on the often downright experimental flights of multitracked six-string aggression chronicled here. Culling single sides and album cuts, this collection charts the Arrows' explosion from early, SoCal surf-rooted innocence into the wildly inventive sultans of the sonic psych-out that powered Devil's Angels, Born Losers, Wild in the Streets, and the other cult '60s soundtracks that form the bulk of this collection. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Through exclusive arrangement with Curb Records, Sundazed is thrilled to announce the release of the ultimate, fuzzed-out `60s gems by the legendary Davie Allan & The Arrows! Davie Allan & The Arrows recorded the most frenzied instrumentals the world has ever heard! Allan's fuzzed-out guitar was an audio compass pointing towards freedom, sex, danger and violence, his trashy fretboard riffs exploding behind flickering celluloid images of cycle runs, biker fights, drug freakouts and rubber-burnin' hot rods. The myriad of Arrows' recordings is filled with loud, loose and savage tracks, and includes the mega-hit "Blues Theme" from the trashy Roger Corman flick, The Wild Angels. Allan's recordings were originally spread out over four studio albums, a bevy of impossible-to-find singles, and more than a dozen rare soundtrack appearances from 1965-68, thus defusing his long overdue recognition. To restore Davie Allan to his rightful place atop the ranks of fabled guitar gunslingers, we have lovingly compiled a 40-track, double CD/28-track, double LP gatefold-edition anthology that rounds up the best of Allan's 45s, sizzling album cuts, and many mind-splattering widescreen rarities along with a full-color 16-page booklet filled with a full band history, interviews with Davie, producer Mike Curb, original Arrows members, plus unseen photos, original album graphics, AIP poster reproductions, and more!

4 out of 5 stars Some of the greatest insto rock ever, marred slightly by packaging.......2005-07-25

As another reviewer stated, this could've been a single disc comp if one of the longer tracks had been removed, making it a better bargin and more appealing to those being introduced to the work of Allen. However, even in its packaging, there is no denying this is great rock 'n' roll. It is also the best introduction to one of the masters of instrumental rock, and is on par with Link Wray and Dick Dale. The music never fails to conjure up images of Hell's Angels, or 60s exploitation flicks, and there is a reason to that. Most of this music was written for exploitation film soundtracks, primarilly those by Roger Corman. As good as those biker films are, the best part of them is by far the music. Sometimes this music can all sound the same, but with a sound this good, who's complaining? Great, raw, unpolished, if you like vintage instro rock, this is right up your alley.

5 out of 5 stars Davie Allan RULES!.......2005-02-11

It's about gotdam time this came out on cd! Geez, it's 2005!!! Finally, I can hear this stuff on cd! I've had this material on vinyl, but not all of it! I've had friends who are collectors and only listened to this stuff! I've heard alot of their stuff in 60's movies usually in biker movies! It's great driving music when yer being chased down the street by the MAN! Go get it! Fuzzed out Ventures/Link Wray! It's like they are the Psychedelic Ventures playing Mosrites thru Mosrite fuzz pedals in the style of Link Wray! The Ventures on acid! This rules!

1 out of 5 stars GOOD MUSIC, POOR VALUE.......2005-01-17

My problem with this anthology is the not the music, but the fact that there isn't enough of it! Oh sure, it sounds like a great deal getting 40 tracks of fuzz-drenched instros. Well, wait until you pop these discs into your player and see the total times-ONE DISC IS UNDER 40 MINUTES, WHILE THE OTHER IS ONLY 45 MINUTES! Sundazed could have left off one of the longer tracks such as "Cycle-Delic" and they could have fit everything else on one disc. Yes, one disc with 39 tracks-that's how short most of these songs are! The packaging is nice and the sound is very good, but I just can't help but feeling a little ripped off paying close to thrity bucks for a 2-disc set when there's really only enough material for one cd. This should've just been a single cd release, or Sundazed could've done it right and crammed both discs full with at least 35 tracks each.

5 out of 5 stars GET IT WHILE YOU CAN.......2004-06-27

I have been waiting on an anthology from this group for years. As with The Ventures, most of their songs are instrumentals and I think these two groups are the best instrumental bands to come from America. The song selection, sound and packaging are great and it's nice to have their best songs compiled here. If a few songs were omitted, it could have been a single disc but that's only a minor issue. Since I purchased this anthology, nothing else has been on my CD player more. I suggest you get this now because collector's know how great CD's come out, you put off buying it and before you know it, it has been deleted for one reason or another. This is one of those CD's you should get now. If you like the Ventures and the music of the Standells, this is one for you. If you dream of Nancy Sinatra sitting behind you on a motorcycle, well, just go buy this darn thing.

4 out of 5 stars Been waitin' a long time for this !.......2004-06-13

Ever hear any of those gnarly reverb-drenched instrumental soundtracks from all those AIP biker films from the 60s?

Well it was Davie Allan & The Arrows that did most of 'em and now Sundazed has finally released many of those Tower singles and LP tracks that have so looong been out of print. The only ones that have even seen the light of day on CD were the ones from THE WILD ANGELS (1966) soundtrack that Curb released a few years back.

The only big drawback is that each of the CDs in this 2-CD collection only contain about 40 minutes of music apiece, thereby leaving out some wonderful instrumentals from RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP and other late 60s drive-in fare. That's why I can't give it 5 stars.

Still it's good to see some of this stuff out there and they sound great, too. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars Vibalicious!! .......2005-08-27

This a proper retrospective of a stellar career! And it isn't over yet! He's still playing, recording, touring and moving his audience, like always. This great music has even recruited quite a few of the younger generation, a testament to his talent!

Polydor did a hell of a job compiling and choosing the perfect songs for this project. For one can only imagine what it must've been like to select and choose what would be included, especially since Roy has so many terrific songs. I guess they settled on a little dash of everything, from the very funky, the very soft, the very electric and the downright jazzy!

Roy Ayers is the man, always has been and always will be..he's the cream of the crop and at the top of the heap, with tasty songs like "Running Away, Searchin', Freaky Deaky to putting his spin on the classic "You Send Me," which by the way, runs a full (8) plus minutes! This set also includes the often sampled: Everybody Loves the Sunshine! Another song draped in greatness! Whew! They just don't do it like this anymore. This is truly a best of and some...

Enjoy Roy...and given the opportunity, rush to see him perform Live. It's a treat for the soul and spirit. He is one of the few artist that I know (ala Maze f/Frankie Beverly) that can still sell out a show, every single time out! He's definitely, Mr. Consistency!

One can never go wrong with Mr. Ayers in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Essential.......2005-07-21

two cds full of roy ayers music should be enough to make any funky music fan happy, but the good folks at polydor went over the top with this one. these cds span a huge part of his recording career (even the often forgotten, yet enjoyable 1980s tracks) and they filled these cds with as much music as they possibly could - 31 tracks, 2 hours and 34 minutes of music. what's more is that someone even knew what the good tracks were. r&b, funk, soul and jazz predominate his music, and much of it is filled with his excellent vibraphone playing and equally soaked in his smooth singing (he has killer back-up singers too). his popular duets with the likes of guru - which i personally never flipped for - aren't on here, but that makes it all the better in my opinion. it's all roy ayers in the spotlight.

5 out of 5 stars The Freaky Deaky--Funky Donkey! Oh! Man!.......2005-06-12

The first time I saw Roy Ayers Live was when I was a HS Freshman and snuck into Mansfield State College in Mansfield, PA now known as Mansfield University. He started the show off with The Freaky Deaky--and I lost my mind. There is only one Roy Ayers---no one can ever dulicate Roy--ever. Years later I had the chance to run into Roy again, this time in my 30's and met the brotha and told him of my experience---being Roy he just laughed and said "Thanks".

If you are a real Roy Ayers Fan--this is a much have CD. Runnin Away---When I see you- Love will bring us back together---Don't stop the feeling---all powerful--guaranteed to put you in a frenzy
as you will wear the letters off the CD.
Don't pass this on this one!

5 out of 5 stars PART OF MY DESERT ISLAND CD COLLETION..........2004-04-27

If I were stranded, this is one of the CD's I could play over and over without driving myself crazy. This is the best compilation of Roy Ayers I've heard. His music is funky, jazzy, soulful and spiritual at the same time. Guaranteed to make your head bob at all times. This is why so many artists continue to sample his music. A must have for the collection...

5 out of 5 stars CHANGED MY LIFE.......2003-03-12

5 out of 5 stars Spirited playing of fine compositions.......2007-07-07

This Revueltas anthology is very well played by first class orchestras. The selections by Mata and de la Fuente are particularly played with spirit and verve.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Compositions Brilliantly Performed.......2007-05-03

If you enjoy Bartok & Stravinsky, you will adore Revueltas. Among the 15 works are two versions of sensemaya plus Cuauhnahuac and La Noche de los Mayas, all richly evocative of the ancient Mayan culture which underlies that of Mexico - bold tributes to proud traditions not unlike the musical paintings of the Caucasus peoples rendered by Khachaturian. The music of Revueltas deserves much wider performance in the world, but probably will not be often heard due to its technical complexity and the need for specialized native instruments for some of the passages. At least Leopold Stokowski recognized the brilliance of this spectacular work.

5 out of 5 stars Stokowski's Sensemaya.......2005-10-10

Great, great release. One of the reviews here (by "127") said that the Stokowski version of Sensemaya was interesting "historically but not musically" and I just wanted to strongly disagree with that. Leopold Stokowski has the orchestra playing in a different time-signature than the composer wrote! The piece is written mostly in 7 but this performance seems to have put the whole thing into 4 (it's probably more complicated than that but you get the idea) and the resulting performance is even more hectic and bombastic than the other recorded version of Sensemaya on the same CD. I don't know why Stokowski did this, but this performance is the most unique I've heard (of the piece.) Whether or not this is a "good" thing I don't want to get into but the recording is definitely very interesting and worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars A Compendium of Revueltas Works.......2003-04-09

Unlike many people I think, I've been a fan of Revueltas since I was quite young...I first heard Sensemaya at the age of 12 and was blown away. Unfortunately, for years most of his music was rather hard to find...darn near impossible actually. However, the composer has recently picked up a number of higher profile champions (including Esa Pekka Salonen) and a spate of rereleases during his Centennial a few years ago. Such a rediscover is long overdue!

This current CD is part of the Centennial celebration of Revueltas. It consists of a compilation of orchestral recordings by Eduardo Mata, chamber recordings by David Aetherton and the Jalapa Orquestra Sinfonica under Herrara de la Fuente. The results are quite stunning, with enough material to keep you listening for quite some time!

The first CD contains exclusively orchestral music under the baton of Maestro Mata. This is prime stuff indeed. The CD begins with Revueltas' most renowned piece, Sensemaya, a dense, barbaric orchestral fantasy inspired by a Cuban poem that details a traditional snake-killing ceremony in the Santeria religion. The piece is dominated by short pithy melodic statements which are gradually layered over each other to create greater and greater tension. The result is deeply compelling, Stravinsky's Rite is combined with Varese's Arcana...with native Mexican rhythms and instruments thrown in.

The other works on the album are also extremely compelling. They can be broken down into abstract orchestral works, chamber pieces and music for film. In addition, Revueltas shows two definate sides, one is the convinced modernist, who shows a lot in common with Varese, and even Scriabin. The best work in this vein is the Danza geometrica (and it's chamber version Planos). The other big vein is the "nationalistic" vein, of which Revueltas was a greater exponent than his compatriot Chavez. Many works on this CD, Itinerios, Homage to Garcia Lorca, and others display a sense of wild abandon present in traditional fiestas. And yet, even here, Revueltas is a formalist and modernist, treating his material less as color and more as another structural element.

The other really wonderful work on this disc is La Noche de los Mayas. Culled from a film score, this is beautifully written film music and quite ahead of it's time. It's not hard to imagine these Revueltas strains as an inspiration to Bernard Herrmann, Elmer Bernstein and the like. The work is structured as a large symphony, dominated by a broad, tonal but dissonant theme in the brass. There is a wealth of detail in this work that I come back to over and over.

Much of this material has very little competition. The chamber works have been basically neglected on CD and many of the orchestral works are only available on this disc. Sensemaya has significant competition however. Salonen has done a really wonderful disc of this material, which also includes a great reading of Noche. Bernstein has perhaps the best reading of Sensemaya available on his Latin American Fiesta album (which also includes a wonderful rendition of Chavez' Sinfonia India)But Mata's reading is nearly as good as Bernstein and just as good as Salonen. Overall, for breadth and depth of music covered, this is a superlative disc and the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Abstract but deep........2003-02-05

I've got this cd when I first heard of this composer. He is the biggest composer that Mexico has had to offer to the classical music scene. Mexico has a variety of notable composers such as Chavez but none of them match Revueltas impact on the scene.

This cd pretty much has all of Revueltas' major works including his most known one: Sensemaya. That piece has been conducted by Bernstein and Stowkowski with the latter being on this disc. There is two performances of Sensemaya which includes the one mentioned above and a new version.

The best piece I believe is Janitzio. If you are Mexican you will be reminded of Mexican big bands because Revueltas incorporated the sound into this piece as well as imitations of a Mariachi band. It is a very abstract piece but very remenicent of Mexico. Excellent cd as a whole.
The cd includes a booklet with information on Revueltas and the pieces on this cd.
