Product Description
Originally released in 1971, this was the first album White recorded for Warner Bros. The mix of styles are still very much in evidence, but a more reflective singer-songwriter approach is present and would continue on subsequent releases

4 out of 5 stars Amazing oportunity to understand the great voice and music arrangements of Tony: MUST BE IN YOUR COLLECTION !.......2007-05-30

I bought this CD thanks to the sale offer Amazong inform me. It was a hard to fine CD from long years ago. Now I believe I was purchased one of the best record of the year !. The hits compilation is the best sample of who Tony had not all the press and major press attention. Tony was as JJ Cale, great and personal music ocult below the Billboard hits.
However, unfortunately the CD had not include Tony other hits made him a great singer and musician.
Buy it now..good price for a collection CD!

5 out of 5 stars A REALLY GREAT ALBUM BY A MASTER!!!.......2007-05-08

From the moment I first heard "Polk Salad Annie", back in the late '60s, I became a Tony Joe White fan. It was really refreshing to hear a fellow Southerner playing a style of music that was unique to my part of the world. Tony had real "Soul" without trying to be a Black wannabe. There were always elements of Country and Funk in his style but he combined them in an original way that others would only weakly imitate later. Sadly, after a couple of hits, he seemed to disappear and, frankly, I even forgot what his name was. Then, a few weeks ago someone mentioned him as an influence and it was like "Oh yeah: I remember him. He was cool!" So, I ordered this album and my Yankee wife and I listened to it for the first time in my truck while we were making the weekly run into town to buy groceries and other supplies. My wife is too young to remember "Polk Salad Annie" but the minute it came on, man, her head was bobbing and she got a big grin on her face...and she kept grinning and bobbing through the whole album! I had never heard most of the tunes in this collection but I wasn't disappointed by a single one! What's amazing about Mr. White is that, while he writes, sings, plays the the guitar and harmonica adequately, he is not a virtuoso on any of them. Yet, when you take the sum total of one of his performances, he is really, really great!

I guess the big surprise for me was "Ol' Mother Earth"! Who would have thought that an ol' Southern Boy would have written such a sensitive pro-environment tune. I must admit that it made my throat thicken up a little. Another extra good one was "Willy And Laura May Jones": social commentary at its finest!

This is a great introductory album for those who are unfamiliar with Tony Joe's work...and just as great for those of us who are.

I'm so happy to see that he's still around and still recording. I have already ordered more of his albums.

I just hope that he tours in North Central Florida!

4 out of 5 stars Swamp Fox.......2007-01-15

I used to only have this music collection on cassette tape, and searced for some time to replace the worn out version with a crisp sounding CD. This is one of my favorite collections of Tony's. I love the bluesy guitar and soft smoldering Southern style of Polk Salad Annie & Rainy Night in Georgia. I was in high school when he hit the charts in July of '69 and "Polk Salad" was one of my favorite hits. To this day whenever it comes on the radio or I pop the cd into my player, it brings back so many fun memories of us all singing and humming to the tune, I will never forget! So pop it in and sing along you will never forget what you were doing the first time you ever heard this Southern-gumbo Style singer either!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely great!!.......2006-06-26

Until I heard Tony Joe White on a blues channel, I never knew he existed. I immediately ordered a CD and have almost worn it out. He is amazing..

4 out of 5 stars Good but not his best.......2000-08-22

This is a CD that should be in most people's collection. If you can't have all of the earlier albums then this is a good sample. However as with any Greatest Hits CD's this one has some good stuff on it and some okay stuff on it. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that it is missing some of the songs that more define TJW than some of these. Songs like "For Le Anne" or "The Father" or his great version of Dylan's "Copper Kettle". I was surprised that the title track, and one of his few instrumentals, "Home Made Ice Cream" did not make the cut. That song is not only short but as TJW as you can get.

If you like his older material, especially the quieter songs, then check out his last 3-4 CD's which find him in a more mellow form.

For The Heroines, Tony Joe White invited some of his favorite female friends to the party. Unlike Hollywood movie stars, White likes his costars within spittin' distance of his own age. Shelby Lynne's lines in "Can't Go Back Home" fit like a glove; her voice is reminiscent of White's own, like someone simultaneously whispering sweet nothings and the secrets of the universe into your ear. Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, and Jessi Colter also join the swamp fox on a record that provides plenty of what one tune aptly calls "Back Porch Therapy." The Heroines manages to tweak your libido and save your soul, magically, at once. --Michael Ross

5 out of 5 stars Music Lover .......2005-09-13

It is so refreshing to "go back" sometimes to real music. Tony Joe White has really over impressed me with this fantastic album of blues, country, rock...as best described. I purchased this one along with the new Van Morrison Magic Time and both CDs are so enjoyable from two musical talents and legends. My acid jazz, soul, funk and other CDs have not returned to the machine since these arrived. Please, if you get a chance to take a trip back to mother earth try and have a listen to this one.

4 out of 5 stars Ain't no poke salad here.......2005-02-18

Starting and ending with 2 semi classical spanish guitar type pieces. Making Shelby Lynn sound good on Can't Go Back Home. Anyone and Emmylou. Listen for the "don't open the gate" line in Ice Cream Man. Rich Woman Blues. And Chaos Boogie, a song already on my list for 10 best songs of the year. It's a must buy.

4 out of 5 stars The Swamp Fox Rides.......2004-11-30

On "The Heroines," Tony Joe White, the swamp fox, rides high again. Two of the tracks are songs from his excellent 2001 effort "The Beginning." "Ice Cream Man" sounds as excellent as when it rode into my personal top ten in 2001! The new version has a more full band sound and pours on the smoking White guitar. "Rich Woman Blues" is another excellent track that smolders with White's growl-sing blues groove, "Got a telephone call this morning, My baby wrecked her Mercedes Benz, she totaled out her Mercedes Benz, I said long as you're alright baby, that's all that matters, let them tow the thing on in." One of my favorites is the duet with Jessi Colter, "Fireflies in the Storm" with its searing slow burn, "Out of the shadows the wildness begins, we wait for morning & darkness moves in, but there's a light that keeps shining warm like fireflies in the storm." "Chaos Boogie" is a great rocking TJW track that sets your toe to tapping. The duets with Shelby Lynne, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, and Tony Joe's daughter Michelle are all excellent. The set begins & ends with two brief guitar instrumentals. "The Heroines" continues Tony Joe White's artistic peak, some 30 albums into his career. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Swamp Rock and Soul.......2004-11-06

Tony Joe White at his best can send chills down your spine. But sometimes his own captivating style can be its own worst enemy. Unfortunately, "The Heroines" is a bit of both. His soulful, whispered style can be very powerful. But it can also make the ambience of where and how you're listening a concern.

I first listened to "The Heroines" in my car and between road noise and the throbbing bass, much of it was unintelligible. The second listening was using headphones in a quiet room. This time I was able to concentrate on the intriguing lyrics and the true sentiment of the songs. Some are very heartfelt love songs and some others reflect White's playful side and his sense of humor. And the contributions of his vocal partners, from Shelby Lynne to Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams work so very well with Tony Joe.

All in all, this is a fun project and well worth the price. Just make sure you give it a chance to work on all the levels that it deserves.

5 out of 5 stars Swamp Rock At It's Weathered Best.......2004-10-12

It's been a long road from "Polk Salad Annie" and the miles have worn well on Tony Joe. It was a little jarring to hear "Closing In On The Fire" pulsing through the car speakers and KNOW that you know that voice, one thought to be long lost. But the pulsating bass and guitar lines that underpin all true Swamp Rock are never better than they are on this disc. All the tracks are a guilty pleasure. The mood is set, the ache of experience dripping from each phrase, each note. While there are moments where the tunes scream for a powerful lead guitar or a seriously surging harmonica, the space left by their absence ultimately makes the heart grow fonder and the soul emerge replenished. Buy it. You'll know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars TJW's best album.......2006-09-18

The Train I'm On is that truly rare animal; a PERFECT album. I think if you put 100 TJW fans in a room and had each one pick their favorite song from this album each of the twelve songs would be mentioned at least once.

There's a great deal of stylistic variety at work in the songs, but the quality is always there. There are more acoustic guitars than electric and there's not a note out of place in any of the playing or the deft arrangements.

The Train I'm On is a stone classic. I cannot recommend this album highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe his best work.......2006-07-19

I ve been listening to Tony Joe White for years. Nothing he does in less than great. But I think if I had to throw all my TJW albums out but one, this is the one I would keep. Every song on this CD is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars An alternative Elvis.......2005-07-06

Tony Joe White sings (and looks) like Elvis's younger surly brother on this album. I was expecting it to be good, but I was surprised at how great it is. If you like the swamp affectations of Creedence and Little Feat, then you'll love the real thing. I was a little wary of a song with a title like "Even Trolls Love Rock 'n' Roll," but it's a hilarious story with really great playing. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Tony Joe IS Swamp Rock music!.......2004-01-20

This is one of Tony Joe's better albums. From the slow soulful title cut to the rocker Even Trolls Love Rock & Roll (one of TJWs best IMO). My personal favorite is The Gospel Singer. His big hits from this one are I've Got a Thing About You Baby and If I Ever Saw a Good Thing. If you are going to buy some TJW music, my recommendations are this album and One Hot July which I consider to be his alltime best.

Tony Joe White says he always saw the friends he invited to play on his new album--Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, J.J. Cale, Michael McDonald, and the late Waylon Jennings--as "keepers of the fire." They're also premier custodians of loneliness and despair, the two emotions that lie at the heart of this hypnotic submersion into country/swamp blues. From the kickoff track, "Run for Cover," with Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns, these meditations on mourning--lost lovers, spiritual struggles, anxiety that knows no name and no bottom--grab the listener fast and pull him down into swirling dark waters. For that reason, there's a numbing sameness--on occasion, two songs back-to-back seem to simply be extensions of each other. But while Jennings's effort is more a portrait of the artist testing his chops after suffering a stroke, other collaborations stick in the mind. The dour Knopfler shows up on the most optimistic song, "Not One Bad Thought," but his vocals still sound like the barely uttered words of a depressive on a bad down. Clapton's voice remains characteristically modest on "Did Somebody Make a Fool Out of You," yet his guitar work--measured and full of emotion--proves what you don't play is as important as what you do. Still, the best pairing is that with Michael McDonald on "Baby, Don't Look Down." When White's smoky rumble meets McDonald's bruised, angelic tenor, you'll know why God made music. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars MIXED FEELINGS ON THIS ONE:.......2007-05-20

I've got mixed feelings about this album. On the one hand, it's got Tony Joe White...and even in '06, The Boy is cooking. And, as another plus, the drum mixes are as crisp as a whip. On the downside, he elected to have outsiders sing and play on some of his cuts...and the only reason I can think of that he did so was to show that, by comparison, he's the Real Deal and they are just wimps.

Don't get me wrong: I'm a big fan of Mark Knopfler's and, even though it has become fashionable to bash Clapton in certain hobbyist guitar forums, I appreciate the greatness he has added to guitar history. Now, J.J. Cale is not someone I have ever warmed up to...and Michael McDonald? Gawd! I can't stand to listen to that whiny, fake, constipated-sounding voice. He sounds like he can't quite decide whether he's an opera-singer or a wannabe "Blue-Eyed Soul" singer. And, sadly, he's neither! But, the scariest part is that he, probably, thinks that he's actually adding something to Tony Joe's track!!! The only song that works pretty well is the one he shares with Waylon Jennings. On this one, they sound like a couple of Horny Old Men having a good time. Cool!

"Not One Bad Thought" with Knopfler isn't bad...but I was disappointed by Knopfler's contributions. On his own, his vox are very Soulful...but they sound weak in comparison to White's. And: I'm used to hearing Knopfler cook on guitar...which, like me, he plays bare-fingered. But here? It sounds like they used a lot of obnoxious stomp-boxes that buried the distinctive Knopfler sound.

And "Did Somebody Make A Fool Out Of You" with Clapton was obnoxious compared to Tony Joe's original version. The mix wasn't very good because there was a lot of self-indulgent "busy-work" between the (too-many) guitar tracks. Clapton certainly plays flawlessly...and his vox are decent. But, when heard in comparison to Tony Joe's, he sounds exactly like what he is: a weak British copy of The Real Deal.

I won't even comment on the Cale track ("Louvelda") except for one word: boring.

"Baby, Don't Look Down" is a really cool tune (as is the first cut...done without outside "help"..."Run For Cover"!) but the worst parts are whenever Michael McDonald "graces" us with his vox. Man, that guy's voice is nothing but irritating and he should probably stick to hanging out in L.A. and not trying to sound Southern...or Soulful. Listen to the difference between Tony Joe's solo vocals and McDonald's: I rest my case! Plus the fact that it didn't sound like they'd rehearsed their parts up very well. When they sing harmonies, their phrasing is downright sloppy...and shameful!

The general arrangements are good...especially the horn-charts...and the back-up vox work very well within the context. I already mentioned that the drum mixes are crisp. Tony Joe's vox could have been brought up a little in the mixes...but, over all...except for the bad choice in collaborations...it was a decent album.

But here's a personal message to Tony Joe:

Hey, man: PLEASE make the rest of your albums without collaborating. You're simply better than that...and you don't need the "famous" names screwing up your good work!

With ALL respect,

Ian Bruce-Douglas

3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-05-13

Interesting disc for Tony Joe White fans. His earlier discs are better - such as On The Path Of A Decent Groove, Lake Placid Blues, Closer To The Truth and One Hot July. Easy to listen to but some of the tracks are badly recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Very good CD.......2007-05-09

Tony brings friends into these bluesy songs and turns out a better than average (for Tony) collection. I'm a big fan, having 3 albums and 6 CDs by him and this one has become one of my favorites.

3 out of 5 stars Tony Joe better as a loner........2007-03-11

A good CD, but not his best work. Tony Joe has such a unique style, and that sometimes makes his music difficult to blend with other artist. "Did somebody make a fool out of you" is one of my favorite Tony Joe songs, and is very well covered on this CD. Certainly good listening; a master stylist.

4 out of 5 stars Tony Joe is in his groove, like a comfortable pair of used boots.......2007-03-04

Let me preface this review by saying that Tony Joe IS the MAN. He is a great influence on me and my own personal songwriting. That being said it is my opinion that Uncovered is good-not great. This should BY NO MEANS dissuade one from buying and listening to this collection. The guest appearances do little to make the compositions stand out. Most of the vocals from the guests are not very distinguishable from Tony Joe's approach. While I'm certain it was cool for these greats to get together and cut tracks, I'm not hearing too much that stands out. My personal pick is the vintage T.J.W."REBELLION". Louvella is a bit long and repetetive. It is tough to make out the vocals by JJ Cale. Probably the best guest vocal- or at least the one that stands out tonally- is Michael McDonald's. "Not ONE BAD THOUGHT" is a great song. Wonderful sentiment.
Tony Joe could burp into a pail and make it great on some level. Hey, the cat is responsible for some of the best lyrics and atmospheric songcraft out there...I do question why the remake of Rainy Night in Ga and Midnight Train.I suppose that was a marketing decision. In The end that's TJW's decision and no one elses.I can respect that.

Few rockers wring more out of less, and cut across more musical categories in the process, than Tony Joe White. The bard of the Louisiana swampland makes it look so natural and sound so organic, telling stories with his wah-wah guitar over a spare, stripped-down rhythm section. Yet this 1980 live taping for the Austin City Limits series offers more than variations on a theme of "Polk Salad Annie" (his 1969 smash about a granny-chomping gator). As a writer, he shows an affinity for tender balladry on the soulful "Rainy Night in Georgia" (a chart-topper for Brook Benton) and "Billy," while cuts such as "Mama Don't Let Your Cowboys Grow Up to Be Babies," "Red Neck Women" (not to be confused with Gretchen Wilson), and "That's the Way a Cowboy Rocks and Rolls" would find him today classified as country. Though "Disco Blues" is pure boogie, "I Get Off on It" could pass as disco. And for those who can't get enough of "Polk Salad Annie," there's plenty more in that vein as well. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars TJW--The Change.......2004-11-08

I have this album on vinyl and have been looking for it on CD for years. The best track by far is "The Change" and that song alone is worth the price of the disk, for my money. If you want more of the same, get "The Best of Tony Joe White." With songs like "Polk Salad Annie," "Willie and Laura Mae Jones," and "Rainy Night in Georgia" among its 20 tracks, this CD definitely lives up to its name!

If you know Steamy Windows by Tina Turner, Rainy Night In Georgia by Brook Benton, Polk Salad Annie by Elvis Presley or Willie And Laura Mae Jones by Dusty Springfield, then you know something about one side of Tony Joe White, the Swamp Fox from Louisiana. He wrote all of those and plenty more besides. Not only an accomplished songwriter, though, Tony Joe White is also recording artist and performer in his own right, singing and playing guitar on his own and other people's records and regularly touring.

Black And White was the album that followed his own 1969 US top ten hit Polk Salad Annie, the song that introduced swamp rock to the nation: funky horns, southern fried wah-wah guitar, alligator soul boogie and a voice as deep as his sideburns. There's a stack of that here, including an extra-fine version of Willie And Laura Mae Jones, as well as the earlier single Soul Francisco and four other original songs. The second side of the album consists of other people's material done the Tony Joe White way: Johnny Taylor's Who's Making Love, Slim Harpo's Scratch My Back, Roger Miller's Little Green Apples (a surprisingly effective and tender version), Glen Campbell's Wichita Lineman and Dusty Springfield's (or Dionne Warwick's) The Look Of Love.

The album was produced in Nashville by Billy Swan. As a bonus, both sides of his first single, from 1967, produced by Ray Stevens, are included. You can buy a Best Of compilation, but why deny yourself the opportunity to hear an album or two in full, as intended, in the process?

5 out of 5 stars Swamp Rock.......2002-06-10

This compilation of Tony Joe White's most successful recordings includes unforgetable standards like "Polk Salad Annie" and ballads like "Rainy Night In Georgia." His smooth, soulful baritone voice and straight-ahead musicianship defines a rewarding genre in rock music. Known as the "Swamp Fox", Tony Joe White's music incorporates a tasty touch of soul (without the heavy brass instrumentation usually associated with this form of music). The album has some 70's overtones, but they are tastefully done and scaled down to the basic 4-piece unit of lead, rhythm, bass, and drums. His themes deal mostly with snapshots of life on the bayou, as well as some enduring issues of social consciousness. His work has influenced many artists, and this is the album to add to your collection if you are interested in acquiring some of the most brilliant work of an influential and talented artist.

Album Description

Digitally remastered four CD set containing all three of White's Monument Records albums in their entirety plus a slew of unreleased tracks, including ten 1969 Paris sessions and seven live performances from the Isle Of Wight. Recorded with such Muscle Shoals musicians as David Briggs, Norbert Putnam, and Jerry Carrigan, White's first album, 1969's Black And White, featured such originals as "Willie And Laura Mae Jones" and "Polk Salad Annie," along with such covers as Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman." Released later that year, White's second album, ...Continued, featured the same Muscle Shoals players, along with Mike Utley, Tommy McClure, and Sammy Creason. Tony Joe came out in 1970, revealing an absence of the horns that had been so dominant on the previous records, and anchored by White's acoustic guitar. Following an electrifying performance at the legendary Isle Of Wight festival, White moved to Warner Bros. Records, ending this first chapter. Rhino. 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Finally A TJW Box Set !!.......2006-12-16

Granted there is more to Tony Joe White than is provided in this box set. But,if you are a fan of his older work then this is for you. There are several alternate versions , some good, some not so good. And of course there are some killer covers such as WHAT DOES IT TAKE, WICHITA LINEMAN, LITTLE GREEN APPLES. Don't forget Tony's original works such as Roosevelt and Ira Lee, Rainy Night in Georgia and of course Polk Salad Annie. This is a true gem and it's been a long time coming !!!!!!!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lasting excellence.......2004-04-29

I've bought this cd more or less by accident shortly after its release in 1995, but I've been playing it weekly ever since. In his best lyrics Tony Joe White has the ability to go to heart, without becoming too sentimental . A sentence like "The repossesion of the guitar hurt the most." in the title song shows, I hope, what I mean. The music is at the service of the mood set by the lyrics, which can be difficult with themes as the death of a brother and trying to get a grip on life after such a loss. Not all songs on this album have the quality of the title song or 'The guitar don't lie' and 'Let the healing begin', but that doesn't distract from the fact that this is one of the very few albums from the nineties which I've been playing again and again and will stay with me for the rest of my life.

4 out of 5 stars Two Great Rockers, Plenty Of Fine Blues.......2002-12-28

Tony Joe White's albums from the 1990's are all more stripped down and blues-oriented than his more well-known material from his "Polk Salad Annie"/"Rainy Night In Georgia" heyday. But although blues has been his main idiom for the past decade or so, "Lake Placid Blues" is mainly distinguished by two of the finest rockers of White's career, the title track and "The Beach Life". This set also includes "Let The Healing Begin", which had been covered to fine effect by Joe Cocker, but I like Cocker's version much better. Other highlights include "Louisiana Rain", "Down Again", and "The Guitar Don't Lie". Another fine set by a woefully underappreciated talent.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY THE BEST.......2002-08-28

WORDS CAN'T DESCRIBE THIS CD. YOU JUST HAVE TO LISTEN TO IT. LIKE TONY JOE WHITE, EACH SONG IS UNIQUE. THIS IS THE BEST MUSIC I HAVE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF LISTENING TO. ENJOY!!!

5 out of 5 stars Well worth buying if you like Tony Joe White's style.......1999-05-01

I was glad to see Tony Joe's music on Amazon - it's swamp music at it's best. Having met him at Fan Fair 10 years ago and listened to his music for years before that - I know he has a great musical talent. I have listened to this CD several times already. My favorite song is Down Again with Menutha close behind. Keep up the good work.

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful cd from one of the best American writers........1998-10-14

There are 14 wonderful songs in this cd. If you like swamp music Tony Joe White is the man. His distinctive voice like that of John Fogerty is very powerful and his guitar playing is very tasteful.
