Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." --Rickey Wright

Nice cuban music.......2007-03-15

I have had this album a number of years, and my enthusiasm is not quite as great as many of the viewers here, because although it is generally pleasant listening, I don't think there are really any outstanding tracks or personal favorites on here.

I should add that I speak Spanish fairly well and therefore understand the lyrics, and am generally an enthusiast of Hispanic culture and music. The story of this worthy project and how this was recorded are interesting and I suspect some reviewers are moved more by sentiment than just on the merits of the music, some of which seems very middle-of-the-road to me, albeit pleasant enough for casual listening.

Cubano Revisited.......2007-02-12

Ry Cooder did a good thing reassembling these wonderfully talented and forgotten stars of another period. Great album, wish it was a double, triple, a collection. I would buy it. Can't replace these icons of another era and their sound will be gone with them.

All done in Spainish, this excellent CD has a book included with translations and facts about the players. The music here oozes with atmosphere, taking you to the heart of Cuba. First rate musicianship and great songs all the way through. Ry leaves the vocals to various others, but his guitar work is unmistakably present. A good veiw indeed!

Buena Vista Social Club Classic.......2007-01-16

For those of you who are fans of the Buena Vista Social Club already, this is the masterpiece. A culmination of talented musicians, soul, love, and sultry afternoons with a cool drink getting ready to kick on into the night!

For those of you who have never listened to this style of music, don't just listen to it once as you could compare it to the first 3 olives you have ever eaten.

The first one shocks your taste with a layered complexity that is both sharp and mellow, leaving you with a look on your face that says "what just happened?".

The second takes you back to the memory of your first taste, and enjoying re-living the sensation, you start looking for more.

The third confirms your interests and instils an infatuation with something unique, powerful, and good for the heart and soul, that will be played over and over again.

Michael Fletcher reviewed this CD spot-on. And I concur with the review that it is magical--it is indeed that. I can listen to it over and over at work or at home! It seems to suit almost any mood and simply nourishes the soul. I highly recommend for anyone who enjoys good music--you don't even need to be a fan of Cuban music. I certainly am not well versed in Latin music, but am a definite fan of this album!

Juana Molina set aside the budding musical career she'd pursued since childhood to become one of TV's most acclaimed comedians in her native Argentina. Her original muse may have been denied for seven years, but never forgotten; indeed, Molina has managed something of an unexpected musical delight here. Her breathy, gentle vocals haunt unusual song structures and the album's quiet, playful production sense like some restless ghost, wandering a sonic landscape that's as electro as it is Latin. That pan-cultural, less-is-more sense is rare on any collection, let alone on a sophomore album (Rara was released in her native country in `96) cobbled together between club gigs while living in Los Angeles. Driven by an insistent, plaintive guitar and producer/collaborator Alejandro Franov's delicate, bubbling synth riffs, Molina's unusually structured songs often seem to float in on a breeze and escape on a daydream. She's claimed the album was recorded in moments near the edge of sleep, and that stream-of-unconscious tack variously involves rhythmic choruses of barking dogs, ticking watches, and rainforest soundscapes--most so delicately rendered they sometimes seem an auditory illusion--seasoned with impossibly plastic washes of synth and carried by Molina's sweetly somnambulistic vocals. The songs are wandering, with eerie occasional noises (dog barks, for example), and a lovely voice singing in a drifting style. It is wonderful and modern sounding. I have only listened to it once though, and I think it is a cd that you really need to listen to multiple times so that it can grow on you.

Female wisdom strikes again.......2006-08-31

This girl just makes mad every time i listen to her. Mad in a good sense, in a sense of dancing in the double moonlight barefoot, praying outloud to the gods of potions not to be drunk. To describe this music? It reminds me the little electronic whisper of Stereolab (especially Dots and Loops or Cache Coeur Naif with Mouse on Mars) or even Coco Rosie (or early Antenna) and then all the acoustic emotions of Vashti Bunyan as if she had holidays in Argentina, somewhere in Pampas, maybe with Sandy Denny by her side, making out for the pure joy of a psychadelic prevert man. A masterpiece of melody and enlightment, and in spanish (for those who not understand her, she sings pure, natural things and emotions, there it is, Vashti Bunyan again). Have fun, i'm having!

Surprisingly addictive.......2005-04-11

If you only listen for 10 seconds or so, Juana's Segundo would seem to be songs from yet another whispery waif, this time in Spanish.
Well, I listened for longer than 10 seconds.
I think the first couple minutes resulted in me making comparisons between her and Stereolab. Nice approachable songs with good rhythmic tunes and a nice backdrop of analog sound effects [which I'm a sucker for whether it's found in Stereolab, Pere Ubu, Einstuerzende Neubauten, etc.]. Then I found myself replaying certain songs digging up background sounds and seeing how her voice emulated or played with them.
At that point, I guess I'm not listening for just a couple minutes anymore. It's more like an hour, or two, or more. And I'm listening to a bunch of songs over and over again, as well as listening to the whole disc.

Well, I guess I do like the album enough to spend that much time with it. And then I found myself playing guitar along with a few of the songs. More hours of listening.

So yeah. I like and recommend the album. My Spanish isn't good at all, but it doesn't matter. The songs are intriguing, memorable and great to listen to in a variety of occasions or moods.

A sleepy voice with an awakening effect.......2004-05-12

This is an album that I can't stop listening. It brought back to my memory my childhood playgruond with the song "Que lluvia" which makes reference to a popular song in Latin America. I think Juana Molina mixed the sounds and subjects of the songs in a way so strange but effective that the whole album is like a single song with multiple faces. The lyrics remembered me those short japanese poems that reveal to you a big reflection with just a few words.

Consistently Beautiful.......2004-03-15

A mother who leaves her daughter.
A dog that never stops barking.
A preacher who plays with people's illusions.

Little stories and brief moments constitute the lyrical core of Segundo. The musical arragements (which compliments acoustic sounds with electronic/industrial/organ chords) all serve to further illustrate the stories portrayed.

At once fragile and strong, slow-paced but energetic, melancholic but hilarious, intimate but distant, Segundo has Juana Molina singing songs that will stay in your head like the most commercial 3 minute pop song ever, but by doing the exact oposite.

PD. I strongly suggest you try to find her latest album, 3 Cosas, which deals with the post modern world (in the lyrics) from a Yoga point of view (in the music).

Second album I buy of her and equally impressed!! This one seemed to be more focused on her vocals however, WOW!!!! I absolutely loved the album. Every bit of it. I wish she would come to the Cincinnati area, I would love to see her. This album definetely blew me away. Check out track number 6....NOBODY can make that track sound any better!!! The term "Bring it" is fitting for Maria on that song. She fully delivers on that one.

A warm bath of love, anyone?.......2006-04-14

It's uncanny. When Down Beat Magazine rates a vocal jazz c.d. 4 stars, invariably I love it. (Jackie Ryan's "This Heart of Mine", Lorraine Feather's "Such Sweet Thunder" and Dee Dee Bridgewater's "Jai Deux Amours" immediately come to mind). When they rate one higher than that (such as Diana Krall's "The Girl in the Other Room", Lisa Sokolov's "Presence" and Ann Dyer's "When I Close My Eyes", for example), I tend to raise an eyebrow and say, "eh?"

Down Beat recently rated this one at 4 stars. And I am absolutely knocked out by it.

Truthfully, there are singers out there with timbres of voice I prefer listening to. (Ms. Rita's countryperson, Luciana Souza, comes to mind) But with the possible exception of Kate Bush, I cannot think of a popular singer in the world who gets more out of her voice than Maria Rita.

In this c.d., Ms. Rita hits about every conceivable human emotion. Whether sadness, elation, longing, pensivity, sultriness, or raucousness, it's all here. And you can hear every color in the rainbow in her voice as well.

Consequently, to talk about individual track selections defeats the purpose. You have to go for the gestalt. And the gestalt is like being bathed in a warm flow of love.

How can I not recommend this to all? I like to feel like I'm being bathed in a warm bath of love. Don't you? RC

so smooth and romantic.......2001-08-15

This great collection of ballads is the second in the "Romance" series, and is performed impeccably by Luis Miguel, who many consider to be the # 1 singer in Latin music today.

The arrangements are lush and lovely, though perhaps because of the absence of producer/arranger/pianist extraordinaire Bebu Silvetti, doesn't have quite the luster of the 1st and 3rd in the series, which he brought his distinctive magic to...nevertheless, it's a delight hearing these songs so beautifully done, some from years gone by like the incredibly melodic "Historia de un Amor". Other favorites include "Sin Ti", and "El Dia que me Quieras" which includes a nifty bandoneón solo (by Jorge Travisano).

I recommend getting this as part of the 3 disc set, "Todos los Romances". # 3, "Romances", is one of my top 10 favorite Latin music CDs, a classic I never tire of, and # 1 includes the amazing "Te Extraño"...each disc the perfect music for reverie and romance, and an example of that rare thing called "excellence".

A Latin masterpiece.......2001-06-28

"Segundo Romance," the CD by Luis Miguel, is an excellent collection of Latin music. All the songs have Spanish lyrics. These songs are mellow, romantic ballads with a lush, classy orchestral backing. Luis Miguel performs each selection with a gentle, but smoldering, passion.

My favorite songs on this disc are "Sin ti," "La media vuelta," and "Delirio." This is a wonderful CD that should come with the following warning: It may cause listeners to start passionately kissing somebody!

It's easy to understand why this 2nd CD in his Bolero Triligy won Luis Miguel his 3rd Grammy in 1995 and assisted in his being named Best Latin Artist of the Year in 1995 by The World Music Association. His perfect voice alone would sell this album. . .but wait, feel the music (especially the bolero tunes), let the words of these romantic ballads fill your mind - causing your heart to sing - your lips will soon follow for who can resist this Latin King?

TIMELESS, MASTERFUL LOVE BALLADS BY A PRO.......2000-03-15

This marks the apex of Miguel's romance series, although "Romances" does have the best version of "Manha de Carnaval" ever recorded in any language for my money. I play this album frequently, and wore out one copy when it was released in '94. I came to Miguel late, as I do not speak Spanish (yet), but I've always fancied the well-wrought Latin ballad. This collection is surpassed by none, and will make even the most hardcore holdouts fans of the couple of mariachi classics featured herein. Miguel's version of "Delirio" is ecstatic, and if you want some sultry eye candy to gawk at, check out the video that accompanies it. Amor, amor, amor...

Beatiful string instrument recital.......2002-12-03

This Naxos "Early Music" release features Christopher Wilson on vihuela which is a string instrument similar to the lute. This CD contains music from two early Spanish composers where the vihuela was all the rage in court circles. Both cmposers wrote in the traditional fantasia, but their styles are completely different. The liner notes state that Milan who was a professional musician wrote in a style which seemed to be improvisational but was in fact well planned while Narvaes seemed to stretch the range of the instrument taking it to new levels.
To my ears without even a hint of knowledge of music, both composers have created equally fascinating and beautiful works. This CD is not just a musical rarity of interest only to people who love early music but should belong in every collection. The melodies are hauntingly beautiful. I have played this CD so much that I practically have it memorized.

A Truly Harmoniuous and Vibrant Compilation.......2005-07-14

This CD is a colorful compilation of rhythm and mood, vibrant and full of life. Compay is an inspired and tireless musician, it is hard to believe that most of the tracks were recorded when he was in his nineties. His music is a wonderful walk on the streets of Havana, blessed with soul and colour. Enjoy!

Amazing EXCEPT!!!...........2004-09-21

Compay Segundo is a god. His voice...the music on this CD is AMAZING. You'll be transported to another time....EXCEPT the ANNOYING GUITAR!! The second song is amazing and then there's these absolutely horrible guitar solos.....ugh! I can't listen to that song without thinking I would have kicked the drunk gutar player off the stage. The songs where the guitar is in teh background are amazing...every song where the fumbling guitar playing is prominent is annoying because if you could scrape that crap off the top you'd have 100% masterpieces!! Are there any Compay Segundo CD's without this guy playing guitar?? If so get them!!

Wonderful collection.......2004-02-10

For anyone who enjoys the Buena Vista Social Club cd this is an absolute must own collection from the great Compay Segundo. The tunes include Chan Chan from the BVSC but in a different version. The tunes are all beautifully sung and the instumental accompaniment is outstanding. A great addition to any music collection. Compay Segundo's music exudes a joy that is irresistable.

While listening to this CD one is transported to another realm. Compay knew the essence of enjoyment and he conveys this feeling to the listener so effortlessly and effectively. This music leaves one's spirit soaring. His rendition of 'Chan Chan' and 'Guantanamera' is sublime.
An excellent collection of Compay's songs and very well priced to boot.

With age-defying suppleness, Cuban vocalist (and nonagenarian) Compay Segundo helped supercharge the 1997 smash Buena Vista Social Club and, in 1998, his own Lo Mejor de la Vida with his full-bodied voice. Calle Salud, then, comes in 1999 on the tail of both artistic and commercial zeniths and unfolds a series of songs that remains resolutely in the same laid-back realm as Segundo's other late-1990s successes. If anything, Calle Salud is more lush, more embedded in the layers of clarinets that sway as if trying to stay cool on a humid, tropical afternoon. The woody burnish of the licorice sticks, along with the loosely strung guitar and bass and the subtle bed of percussion, makes a pliable cushion for Segundo's rich vocals. He sings with a mixture of cool distance and unflinching commitment to the music's inherent romance. He sings as if at any moment his voice could drop into a full baritone and bellow forth, but instead he lays back with the guitars and keeps the music at an imaginatively rendered slow stroll. It's no wonder that Cuba has nurtured--whether on purpose or not--such talents as this, what with the island's legs in the Afro-Caribbean and its heart worn on its songs. Great album of classic Latin songs, but..........2003-10-29

This is without a doubt a great album made up of classic Latin songs (not just from Cuba, since you also find tunes like Gardel's "El Dia que me Quieras"). However, I have a problem with it: I don't enjoy the fact that it's been put out as a Compay Segundo album, when in most of the songs, due to his age, it's not even his voice that stands out (or is listed as Lead Vocals at all, for the matter, Hugo Garzon appears as such in most of the tracks).

As a son of a Cuban-born music-loving woman, I was raised listening on and off to some of these tunes, so I love them, but I hate the feeling of exploitation that this album exhudes. Unlike other Buena Vista-related releases, such as Ibrahim Ferrer's or Ruben Gonzalez, where they still perform beyond any doubt, Cuban musical legend Compay Segundo should have been receiving tributes by the time this album came out, not made pose for an album where he could barely be noticed. Now, like Celia Cruz, he's no longer with us, so this is almost like a post-mortem rant... My two cents.

Sorely missed.......2003-08-25

Compay Segundo's resurgence was the best thing about the Buena Vista explosion, I think. That a 90 year old man could sing and play with such vigor and individuality--while still being only the "second voice"--astonished me. I picked up his recordings from the old days, which are wonderful, though the sound quality is quite poor. On this album "Calle Salud", there are no such problems, and Compay is in even greater command. When I first heard "Saludo a Chango", the first song on the album, I was deeply moved. He sheds away the other vocals to become "primero", and his voice absolutely booms with authority. In contrast with the Buena Vista CD and Ibrahim Ferrer's follow-up, which was more trumpet-heavy, "Calle Salud" is more clarinet-heavy, and is not burdened by Ry Cooder's guitars. When Compay died a couple of months ago, I was not surprised to see on the news thousands of people in the streets to pay their respects and celebrate his life, which--from what I see in the movie and hear in the music--must have been incredible.

Farewell to Compay Segundo.......2003-07-19

Born on November 18, 1907 in Siboney, Cuba, Maximo Francisco Repilado Munoz (better known as "Compay Segundo") died of kidney failure on July 13, 2003 in Havana, Cuba. Farewell to an unbelievably charismatic and talented musician. Known for his sporty, Borsalino-style hats and trademark cigars, Segundo was truly young at heart and rich in sound. He reemerged in popularity in 1997 with the Buena Vista Social Club documentary and CD. With the passing of segundo, the world has lost a truly unique and irreplaceable sound.

Aged Wine Still The Best.......2001-08-10

When Compay Segundo was born, Roosevelt was in the White House... Teddy, not Franklin. At 92, he's certainly the oldest member of the musical phenomenon Buena Vista Social Club, and the first alumnus to put out a second album since the club came to it's recent popularity. Having fiddled around a bit too long with the an attempted review of his last album, I was taken by suprise with this release following so closely at it's heels. I'm not about to let this happen again. "Calle Salud" is even better than the last, with a bit more diversity and polish. This is the music of 1920s and 1930's Cuba, exactly as it sounded then, but with the pristine sound quality that only modern technology can deliver. Here in the States, the twenties may have been roaring, but in Cuba, music was far more profound and unfeigned, with a tremendously sophisticated eloquence that was simply lacking it's northern counterpart (except, perhaps, with rural blues, which was, in any event, less urbane). And no Cuban music fit this description more than the son and rumba stylings heard here. With only a paucity of instrumentation, it is the antithesis of the Cuban big band sound popularized only a bit later by such artists as Benny More and later still, by Desi Arnaz and all the others. This vital music is as lovely and refined as has ever been produced, and has scarcely changed since those times. Compay has stiff competition within the Buena Vista Social Club which also claims such voices as Ibrahim Ferrer and Eliades Ochoa (both reviewed a few months ago right here), but it's his voice that is my personal favorite. It's deep, resonant qualities are as rich as chocolate cheesecake, with those subtle nuances that can only be achieved by time itself. The laid-back arrangements of these traditional songs provide a rich palette of colors from which Compay paints his masterpieces. The songs speak of everyday life in Cuba, songs of love, work and contemplation. The harmonies are simple but precise and sound effortless. Likewise, all of the ensemble playing strives for the substantive and not the flashy. This is the sound of pure emotion. It's so fortunate, therefore, that Compay is still with us and able to benefit from modern recording techniques and equipment. This disc makes it sound as if he's right in your living room, singing only to you. The other obvious blessing is that, finally, he's getting the recognition he so deserves and the monetary rewards which accompanys it. And there's more oil in the pipeline, with several upcoming projects on the burner as we speak. These might be the gloaming years of his career, but nightfall hasn't arrived quite yet. The man is still touring! He recently played the area with a band that includes several sons. He's trying for a sixth child as we speak, and claims he has no use whatsoever for viagra. Stranger things have certainly taken place, and, even after 87 years (his claim) of smoking cigars, I'm inclined to believe he'll suceed at it. A faultless, stunning recording by the dominant lion of traditional Cuban music, "Calle Salud" is hopefully not Segundo's swan song. He's an international treasure, and shows no signs of giving up the ghost any time soon. Viva!

Liked "Lo Mejor De La Vida" much better.......2001-06-09

Okay, I'm obviously in the minority here. At least so far. But this CD leaves me just a bit cool -- a question of personal preference, no doubt. It's not bad. Far, far from that. It has several good tracks. But it doesn't knock my socks off.

I have Compay's "Lo Mejor De La Vida" CD, which I just love and did from the very first playing. The "Buena Vista Social Club" and "De Cuba Son" CDs had the same effect on me. I loved them right away, and have never tired of them.

I've decided that it's the clarinets. They get a bit intrusive and annoying (to me, anyway) on several cuts. They're almost (though not quite) as annoying as Ry Cooder's slide guitar on so many of the Buena Vista Social Club recordings. Maybe it's just me, but the clarinets keep me thinking that this CD should be called "Tres Player On The Roof".

And then I keep flashing back to the BVSC video -- the scene art where Compay Segundo is trying to locate the site of the old Buena Vista Social Club. Compay was giving another elderly gent his recipe for avoiding hangovers and maintaining overall health --- it's your basic chicken soup. So maybe "Tres Player On The Roof" isn't so far off afterall. But what do I know?

Hey, maybe the CD will grow on me with time. But it doesn't pack that right-out-of-the-package punch that "Lo Mejor De La Vida" had for me.

While British colonists were composing their rugged "fugueing tunes" in the British colonies, chapel masters in Mexican cathedrals were composing concerted vocal music of great beauty and elegance that was widely performed throughout "New Spain" from Gautemala in the south to the California missions in the north.
In eighteenth century Mexican music the names of Manuel de Zumaya and Ignacio de Jerusalem stand out.
Zumaya,s (1678-1755)music became the epitome of the Baroque style in the New World. He was an extremely original composer, his works rivaling in quality those of his European comtemporaries. The works on this recording reflect the many sides of Zulmaya's talents and styles. His music draws from the huge tomes of polyphony and show his skilled mastery of the older Renaissance style. The "Lamentations" (1717) makes use of coloration and ligatures contemporaneus with Handel's early operas. He authored the charming "Sol-fa de Pedro" (1715) during the gruelling examinations used to choose the Chapel Master at the Mexico City Cathedral. It is a "sol-fa", or solfeggio piece, where solfeggios syllables are sung to specific notes. Zumaya's exciting "Celebran,publiquen" demonstrates his ability to handle the large polychoral sound of the high Baroque. The rich textures and instrumental writing reflect his "modern" style, and are at the opposite end of the spectrum from his anachronistic Renaissance settings.

Ignacio de Jerusalem(1710-1769) very quickly established quite a reputation as a composer and a virtuoso violinist. His style differs greatly from Zumaya's style. Whereas Zumaya reveals a mastery of the high Baroque, Jerusalem propels the Mexico City Cathedral into the "modern" world of the 'galante' style. Although he opts for homophonic texture,his contrapuntal abilities were quite respectable. The "Dixit Dominus" and (Polychoral)" Mass in D" have graceful and easily followed fugues. The 'Responsorio de S.S. Jose' reveals another side of Jerusalem- that of the high Baroque. Of all his pieces, this is the one that most captures the spirit of Bach rather than Mozart.
If you have listened to the "Virgin of Gaudelupe" matins by Jerusalem, also recorded by Chanticleer, you have a good sense of what this disc sounds like; it is indeed very attractive music and truly enjoyable to listen to; however, just as the music of Broadway can wear 'thin' after too many listenings, so can this music. BUT I would not want it unavailable to me when I was in the 'mood' to hear it. It's just not Palestrina , or Byrd or Bach, etc.
Chanticleer is perfection in performance, very much like their British contemporaries, the King Singers. They sing just about anything from Renaissance to jazz, and very well indeed. Incidentally the name Chanticleer is taken from the clear-singing rooster in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The group's personnel varies from time, but usually includes 4 countertenors divided into soprano and alto, 3 tenors and 4 basses, give or take a few. But they are all skilled singers and their disc are usually excellent.!!!!

Gorgeous.......2006-07-09

This is one of Chanticleer's best recordings. Their vocal sound is splendid and the pieces presented are impressive. The quality of compositions testify to the individual strengths of these largely unknown composers, the general power of Baroque choral compositional techniques, and probably, the high quality of the choirs in the provincial Mexican cathedrals for whom these pieces were written. A wonderful exploration of a largely unknown aspect of the Baroque.

Baroque vocal not to be believed!.......2004-10-02

I was one of the first people ever to hear this music in a commercial venue, when Chanticleer and the Janus Ensemble performed selections from Mexican Baroque in NYC back in 1996. The CD does not disappoint. The two composers featured were extremely well versed in the Baroque style recognizable in the European masters with a definite Iberian flare.

The polyphonies of Zumaya in "Sol-fa de Pedro" in particular, I would be so bold as to say, rival any of Bach's or Handel's in their harmoniously complexities. The Lamentations are beautifully executed, and I think it really takes a very fluid sounding ensemble like Chanticleer to do them justice. The solo parts were not overly pronounced in this melancholy masterpiece which shines by virtue its several seemless transitions as each soloist faded in and out of the choir.

De Jerusalem I thought took a clear second place, but his work is absolutely beautiful regardless. The imitative counterpoint in the opening track is absolutely enchanting. His rendition of Dixit Dominus is yet another unique musical interpretation of this popular Psalm though the opening is somewhat lighter than the majestic and austere power familiar in Monteverdi's or Handel's versions. The monody of the "Virgam Virtutis" has a touch of "recitative" to it: the 'Tuba Mirum" of Mozart's Requiem comes to mind. "Iudicabit" is a torrential rush of strings and voice that word paints its subject in a forceful and energetic without the typical Baroque severity. The "Gloria" posesses many of the same vocal qualities as Zumaya's Lamentations, but with instrumental parts. The joyous "Amen" choral caps off the vesper with a suitable finale for this work. In 9.1 minutes, Jerusalem sports a tremendous range of musical talent which, acording to my meager musical education, has hints of the classical elements that begin to appear in the mid 18th century when the composer lived.

As other reviewers have said, you will not regret your purchase.

de Mexico. Jerusalem vino de Italia, y se
destaco en la catedral de la Ciudad de Mexico,
su Misa Polycoral fue encontrada en una antigua
mision Espanola en California. En todas estas
obras se puede apreciar bien, el refinamiento
tecnico-musical, de las colonias Espanolas en
el nuevo mundo, en comparacion con las colonias
Inglesas.Cuando en los territorios Ingleses aun
se componian los rusticos "Fuguing Tunes" ya en
las colonias espanolas se conocia la opera, y otras

Zumaya se le conoce como el primer nativo del nuevo
mundo en haber compuesto una opera, "Perthenope" en 1711.
Este es un gran disco, y un buen punto para empezar a
conocer el tesoro musical de nuestro hemisferio.

Chanticleer at their best!.......2001-12-26

This album is phenomenal! Just when you get used to hearing Chanticleer sing a cappella, they come out with a CD of Baroque music with a marvelous sinfonia!
Track 21, the Lamentations of Jeremiah is worth the price of admission by itself. The sonorities are passionate and moving. This album does much to bring to recognition to marvelous creations of "New Spain" during the Baroque Era. If you haven't heard any of this music, buy this album as an amazing introduction.

This album is way better than Moreno's first. It's a great mix of sound, full of energy and memorable sounds. It keeps playing in my head. My introduction to Jorge Moreno was at a live presentation on a university campus. I was so impressed I bought this CD right then and there. I'm not sorry I did.

If you loved the first one, this one iwill take you to the next level. Moreno is a true artist. You feel the evolution of his musical talent through this lyrical journey. From Big band to cool UK sounds this guy is not afraid to step out of the box. I see another Grammy in the future!
