Rebels & Outlaws: Music From The Wild Side Of Life

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
This compilation from the darker strains of classic country provides an antidote to the sanitized, suburbanized fare that Nashville favors today. From Faron Young's "Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young" credo through Tex Ritter's lethally deranged "Blood on the Saddle," the selections celebrate a musical multitude of sins. The most homicidally serious highlights are Johnny Paycheck's "(Pardon Me) I've Got Someone To Kill" and the Louvin Brothers' "Knoxville Girl," which make some of the rest (particularly Spade Cooley's "You Clobbered Me") sound like novelty toss-offs in comparison. Wanda Jackson's deliciously bad-girl cover of "Riot in Cell Block Number Nine" rocks harder than anything by the boys. --Don McLeese

Torn and frayed, the voice of Lucero singer Ben Nichols epitomizes a band that spends half it's time on the highway driving to the next gig. But judging by the fun the Memphis four-piece appears to be having on its fifth album, that road may go on forever. Produced by David Lowry (Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker), the record draws a parallel with its 2005 release Nobody's Darlings, meshing elements of English blues, Southern swamp rock and Bowery Street punk rock-all led by the crashing, thrashing twin guitars of Nichols and the venerable Brian Venable. While songwriter Nichols' can transform Mick Jagger-like between gentle ballads ("She Wakes When She Dreams"), moody love overtures ("The Weight of the Guilt") and straightforward pop songs ("She's Just That Kinda Girl"), his mettle (and the band's) is uncovered in rockers like "I Don't Want To Be the One" and "Sing Me No Hymns." --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars They keep getting better..........2006-12-25

This band just keeps putting out better & better material. My favorite album is Tennessee, but this is as good... if not better. In a time of fall out boy (crap in my opinion) being played on radio, its a shame you dont hear these guys. Do yourself a favor (and the band too!) when they come to your city, go and support them.

5 out of 5 stars Lucero rocks my ears.......2006-10-22

Where Springsteen, The Replacements, Skynyrd and The Ramones smash into each other on a whiskey and sweat soaked bar stage, you'll find Lucero's new tunes. Pure visceral power, the fieriest emotions, the drunkest, loneliest nights. If any of that appeals to you, this CD is for you. I think it's their best record, rivaled only by That Much Further West. "What Else Would You Have Me Be" is one of my favorite songs in years. Lucero makes me feel like that 13 year old kid discovering Guns n' Roses and learning to love music for the first time. They are essential. This record rocks my eardrums. Humans who wish to treat their listening organs nicely will purchase this disc and support the hardest working band in America.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice.......2006-09-30

This is an awesome album. The vocals have an almost Springsteen sound. The lyrics are so powerful and heartfelt. "What else would you have me be?" is one of the best songs on the album, and "San Francisco" is my personal favorite. I recommend this album to anyone who can appreciate good, fresh music.

4 out of 5 stars Sing me no hymns..........2006-09-29

...pour me a tall glass of whiskey and let's have some fun rock n rollers. Lucero plays it on this album. It's a tasteful product all the way around from the album title, cover, art, pictures, song titles, song choruses, lyrics, guitar licks, lead licks right where you need 'em, f***in' lyrics again, f***in' cymbals with base and guts with f***in'...f***in'...vocals and drums! And 1, 2,3,4's! Let's pull out the fine china and f***in dance on it.

The massive success of Mexican pop group RBD can be described as such: the six members of the band were originally cast as bandmates on a Mexican TV series entitled Rebelde ('rebel') and the enormous success of the show made putting together a real-life band a natural next step. The group exploded in the Latin scene, winning Billboard Awards, packing arenas, and selling almost ten million CDs in their first two years together. Rebels, the group's third disc (their first English-language recording) features five of their previous hits translated into English. The songs are all group efforts, with members trading off vocal leads and each contributing harmonies. Since most of RBD are TV veterans, it's safe to say that some are perhaps more gifted actors than they are singers (consider Dulce Maria's painful Britney-on-helium whine). Thankfully, the songwriting is left up to the pros who provide a consistent balance of teen-friendly top-40 pop, largely centered around two topics: love and the loss of love. "Tu Amor" and "My Philosophy" are two examples of straight-up boy-band style love songs with a Latin hue; the group occasionally brings in a somewhat gruff reggaeton sound ("Cariño Mio," "Wanna Play") which is where they shine the brightest. There is admittedly very little that is rebellious about RBD, but their devoted audience clearly loves them just the way they are. --Denise Sheppard

5 out of 5 stars Really Bright Destiny.......2007-05-20

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has been my source for finding new artists that are superb and can sing well. 2005's Macy's Thanksgiving Parade introduced me to Rhianna and Carrie Underwood and last year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade introduced me to RBD and I just happened to discover them after reading that they were starring in the parade last year. While watching the parade for so long I eagerly waited for RBD to appear and finally after about a dozen commercial breaks Matt Lauer and Meredith Veira had finally announced that RBD had appeared and they were on {The Hershey's Chocolate float I think} they sang their song Tu Amor and I was just blown away by their talent and over and over I said to myself "I just have to get their cd" Moments later after their parade float disappeared into the sunset I did some some research on RBD and discovered that RBD's song Tu Amor was the first single off their English debut album that was scheduled for release in December in time for Chrismas and I had to have it and had added it to my Christmas list and since then RBD's Rebels has never left my cd player since and this album shows that RBD indeed has a Really Bright Destiny in the field of music this year,
Here's some of my favorite RBD songs off Rebels,
1. Tu Amor,
Like I mentioned earlier Tu Amor is the song that got me started liking RBD and this song is just so awesome with it's delightful mix of English and Spanish and really fits the album well. This is also RBD's first song written by Diane Warren who also wrote I Wanna Be The Rain and should satisfy fans of all ages. There is also a Christmas remix of Tu Amor called the Natividad Mix but is the same song added with Christmas themed lyrics,
2. Money Money,
This song done entirely in Spanish is a Reggaeton song with Reggaeton superstars Luny Tunes and is sure to be a hit on radio stations everywhere and Luny Tunes does a job well done on it,
3. This Is Love,
If you've seen RBD's Telenovela you might reconize this song from the second season as Nuestra Amor and was used as the theme song for Rebelde's second season and is slightly better then the Spanish version and the lyrics are so good,
4. Wanna Play,
This is the second single from Rebels and is a good song that's great for dancing and parties. Like Money Money this song uses the famous Reggaeton beat that's popular in Latin Music today,
With Rebels climbing up the music charts right now one can only hope what the future will bring for Anahi Christian Dulce Maria Maite and Christopher{Pancho} as RBD will have a Really Bright Destiny indeed

5 out of 5 stars Para el ultimo ridiculo que escribio...........2007-04-28

5 out of 5 stars I Love It.......2007-04-18

I do not own the CD yet but I am going to purchase it. I love their spanish songs and although the english songs may not be as good as the artists singing in english their whole life i still love them because I think RBD is an inspiration to all ages and that if anyone wants to talk about them badly that the person should try to record an album in another language and see what people say about them! I think they are all very talented at singing and acting. I think it is amazing how much they have acomplished in two years. Tu Amor is also my favorite song ever and it has gotten really good ratings and radio play. I think RBD is the best singing group for any age and their songs are so meaningful. Oh and by the way for who ever read that product description, don't pay any attention to it, none of it is true because I honestly think that Dulce Maria has the most beutiful singing voice I have ever heard in my whole life!!!!!!!Truely!

4 out of 5 stars REBELS ALBUM.......2007-03-21

I JUST WANT TO SAY HOW MUCH I ADORE & LOVE RBD. THE ENGLISH ALBUM FOR ME PERSONALLY, IS GREAT! ALTHOUGH, THE SPANISH SONGS CONVERTED INTO ENGLISH WASN'T REALLY A GREAT IDEA, EVEN THOUGH I LIKE THIS IS LOVE. THEIR DIALECT AND ACCENT DOES NOT SOUND THE BEST EITHER. I REALLY WISH THEY WOULD HAVE WORKED ON THEIR ENGLISH MORE BEFORE THEY RELEASED THE ALBUM, BUT WHAT'S DONE IS DONE. I HAVE THE ALBUM AND I ENJOY IT, JUST WANTED TO EXPRESS MY OPINION!!! GO GET THE ALBUM JUST TO SUPPORT THEM. THEY ARE AN AMAZING GROUP. THAT JUST BY SEEING THEM PERFORM ONE COULD TELL THEY LOVE WHAT THEY DO. GOD BLESS!!!

3 out of 5 stars bi-lingual pop.......2007-03-17

I liked the all-Spanish version better. This is still bouncy and fun, but I miss the heart of the original.

A lot of people mentioned that they can't find the songs of the singles in the CD. The interface in the CD is not very clear. The best way is to use Explorer on the CD. The song files are in Quicktime MOV format in the folder D:\DATA\QTS. I opened the files on Itunes and converted them to audio format. These files CAN'T be played from the original CD on a CD player.

Dexy's, in their earlier days, were quite the sonic performers. This album does not contain any of that "Come On Irene" stuff we all saw on MTV back in the early 80s. Nope. This effort shows the true, working-class, blue beat aficianados who could put out a wall of sound and rock the local football supporters into a frenzy with pulsing, frenetic songs. This is the good stuff, for sure. Truly, you won't believe that this band is the same one that donned those queer, matching railroad coveralls and bandanas, and skipped around like a bunch of Kansas City faggots on the telly, chanting "Too Rye Ayeeeeeeeeeeeeee." If you can forgive them that transgression (and I know it'll be difficult), it's well worth your time to check out "Searching ... ." Solid goodness.

5 out of 5 stars The first and greatest Dexys Album.......2004-10-08

I bought this CD having read 'A Music Fans' review not expecting to find any additional tracks and when I found the first five singles (A & B sides) I was delighted. As far as I can tell some of these tracks are not available anywhere else on CD. Tracks like The Horse, Dance Stance (the original version of Burn It Down) and Soul Finger really added to the whole concept of this album. Kevin Rowland has never sounded angrier.

2 out of 5 stars I thought that this would be "Geno".......2004-09-19

I am somewhat confused. I thought that this would have all the tracks that were on the Geno LP but, alas... no.
Only 4 tracks from "Geno" made it on to this CD:
1) Geno
2) There, There My Dear
3) Keep It
4) I'm Just Looking
The other tracks on this album are taken from other sources. Now, please do not get me wrong... I really like anything by Dexy's Midnight Runners; it just cheeses me off that I have to end up purchasing 3 more CDs just to get the original track listing from the "Geno" LP. Also, "The Horse" (from "Geno") is not available anywhere on CD!... thank you.

4 out of 5 stars 12 Step Rebels.......2007-01-23

I thought this CD was pretty good! I have to say I'm a huge fan of Nekromantix, and might not be as used to American-style psychobilly. From my point of view, they're a lot more punk and a lot less surf, but if that's what you like, then check them out! They remind me a lot of a less intense / scary version of the Misfits with a psychobilly twist, but the vocals sound like Tiger Army or even Rancid in some songs. Some songs are slow, and others are super-fast. Whatever your taste, there will probably be something on here you'll like!

5 out of 5 stars F*in awesome cd!.......2006-08-04

To be honest, when I first heard of this band, I went onto amazon and listened to some clips. They didn't sound very special to me, and I think they clipped the worst parts of songs. Anyhow, I later downloaded some full version and I came to like them very much. So, I guess they sort of grew on me. They do remind me of AFI, but I think these guys may even be more talented. This is definitely a great cd, and not a track I don't like.

5 out of 5 stars Go!.. Go!..12 Step Rebels Rockin'.......2006-04-27

This CD really cooks man! The best song hands down is "When the banshees wail". The rebels are one of the best Psychobilly bands in the US. Jakob Insane's voice is smooth as silk and Hamburgler Nate slaps that bass like a demon. You should also check out their split with Graveyard Shift. Some of the song on that CD are on this CD but in a different version. This band is essential to all Psychobilly CD collections!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-02-02

The Psycho scene may not be as lively here, nor nerely that many of bands, but with stand-out bands you don't need to flood the market. 12 Step Rebels join the ranks of other American psycho bands whose originality and song-writing abilities take the scene to far exceeding standards. The entirety of the album is pure genious, if at all similar to any band, vocally it would sound a bit like Nick 13 from Tiger Army, or slightly like Davey Havok of AFI... even so it's a sound all there own... highly recommended album, and a favorite of mine

5 out of 5 stars Psychobilly at it's best.......2005-11-18

This album just straight-up rocks. Sounding a bit like Tiger Army (but better), this album impressed me right from the start, all the way through. The guitars are a bit dirtier for psychobilly in parts, but it fits the sounds perfectly. "Skinwalkers" and "Sometimes They Roam" are stand-out tracks. This album is highly worth the buy - you won't be dissapointed.

Are there two musical personalities with less in common than Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening, Dub Narcotic Sound System, K Records) and Built to Spill's Doug Martsch? In the hands of Martsch, a tune floats like a prismatic shower of shattered glass. His music can be pretty, grand, and moving, yet the words he sings are harnessed directly to the heart. Calvin Johnson works at the other end of the solar system, stripping every song, every moment, of all but its most forward-moving parts. For Johnson there is bass, there are drums, there is the black hole of his voice. In the lines that Johnson sings--the puns, the nonsense, the rhymes--nothing needs a reason, nothing needs to be explained. In the Halo Benders, these two worlds meet, held together by some unseen gravity--invisible, improbable, and infectious. Tilting between Martsch's schoolboy-sweet tenor and Johnson's basso profundo, The Rebels Not In strikes a precarious balance between retro goof-pop ("Devil City Destination," "Do That Thing") and the sentimental ("Lonesome Sundown," "Love Travels Faster") without watering down either impulse. Sparks fly, tears flow, all is well. --S. Duda

5 out of 5 stars Fun, interesting, great!.......2006-11-24

Each song on this album is consistently good especially virginia reel around the fountain and foggy bottom which rival don't touch my bikini as the band's biggest hit. You get doug martsch's always loveable boyish harmonies and calvin johnson's deep baritone all in one fantastic album, how can you go wrong? Though some have said they don't like calvin johnson's voice; it really doesn't bother me. In fact I find even a little comical and fun, but that's just me. All in all you will not be disappointed if you buy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this album right now.......2004-12-20

Hasn't Doug Martsh done enough? He left "Treepeople" (another amazing band) to start "Built to spill", and is now doing a side project turned real band called "Halo Benders". Why he decided to enlist Calvin Johnson you have to hear for youself. I had to listen to this album a bunch of times before I could really appreciate it, but if you like Built to spill already, it probably won't take long.

4 out of 5 stars innie, outtie, i don't care.......2004-05-14

"Virginia Reel" alone thrills me, but then the rest of the album goes and blows my head apart: spacey atmospheres, exceptionally strong and imaginative playing, and that beautifully befuddling vocal pairing (johnson and martsch). i admit that i'm neither a Halo Benders nor Built to Spill maniac, but this record solidly thrusts me towards continued Martsch-ination. it's interesting, intelligent, intensely layered and SURPRISING rock & roll...

2 out of 5 stars Surprisingly ..........2001-07-26

I was so excited when I saw the CD sleeve arrive in the mail. I hadn't listened to The Halo Benders before, but assumed that with the brilliant cast it had to please. I would rather brush my teeth with a crescent wrench than have to listen to the vocals of this album one more time. Isn't there a process in the studio where styles may be appreciated for there creativity, but fail horribly against the standards required to make it on a CD? Come on, Doug. The music is wonderful, but the "voice" makes me want to drown myself. Didn't anyone learn from the Crash Test Dummies ...?!

5 out of 5 stars effing amazing.......2001-04-27

If you like rock, buy it. If you like experimental indie pop, buy it. Brilliant album. Doug Martsch rocks. Calvin Johnson is the man. This album is so good I own two copies.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2005-02-27

It's too bad that the collaboration between Bob Marley & the Wailers and Lee "Scratch" Perry didn't last longer. Perry's production here and on "African Herbsman" really showcases the hard edge to the Wailers' sound that was muffled by later more commercial releases. The raw sound of the band grabs you right from the start of "Soul Rebels," and Marley's soulful voice provides the perfect counterpoint floating above the churning rhythm. The R&B influence of the early Wailers remains strong on this album, and and these smooth harmonies provide a very unique combination with the knotty production. This album will constantly surprise you, and will keep you coming back for more long after you tire of the slick sounds of later Marley.

    4 out of 5 stars Just a clarification . . ........2005-01-06

Please ignore the reviewer that claims that these recordings were stolen by Lee Perry. The albums to which that reviewer refers are the Trojan releases 'Rasta Revolutions' and 'African Herbsman', which are mostly repackages of the PROPER Wailers albums 'Soul Rebels' and 'Soul Revolution Part II'.

    5 out of 5 stars classic reggae.......2004-04-20

this is for the consumer interested in obtaining classic reggae. It features Bob Marley and the Wailers alongside Lee "Scratch" Perry in the early part of the Reggae revolution.

5 out of 5 stars The real deal from the Upsetter!.......2003-07-02

It feels good and it has that masta Scratch sound that brings our the soul in everything. The Tough Gong years were good, but this stuff is genuinely timeless. There's not a bad track here, and Peter Tosh brings an urgency to his performances that contrast beautifully to Marley's more romantic lyrical concerns.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure classic!.......2003-03-31

Trojan records may have dampered to much with this material through the years but this is the one to own. Remastered, inlayer notes by Perry scholar David Katz and delivered in a vintage layout, Trojan now clears out all errors from the past. All sins forgiven!

5 out of 5 stars A good buy for big bob marley and the wailers fans.......2005-11-28

From memory this record also is out on trojan, but at the moment i own the JAD remasters one. If you like early reggae, wailers, rocksteady, or are a big bob marley and the wailers fan this cd is a must. This record is from the wailers upsetter days and is a classic. Sound quality for such old recordings is excellent. This is alot better if your after original tracks than the bootlegged versions you see in the shops for cheap with the soundquality of a gramophone. stand out tracks for me include
1.Soul rebel - This track confirms Aston Baretts status as one of the best reggae bassists of all time, the bass line is incredible, this is back in the late 60's early 70's, so imagine how good he is now!,
    5. My Cup- a well done cover of james browns song 'ive got to cry, cry, cry', bobs vocals ar as always, tops on this track as is bunny and peters backing.
    10. no water - what can i say? a great track, very funky and a great track to listen to, i like bunnys funky backing too,
    11. Reaction, starts off with that upsetter sound, a good solid rhythm, in which bobs soulful vocals drift over the top of, with bunny and petes backing vocals the icing on the cake. and lastly the bonus track
    13. jah is mighty - a rare track, a good rhythm, with some of the classic lyrics off 'corner stone' combined with fresh lyrics ' behold jah is mighty', bobs outstanding on this track in praise of jah.
overall this is a great cd, im especially pleased that on this cd its got the classic tracks which i was after, with great sound quality which is a change!, an excellent buy for early wailers fans for sure, 5 STARS!

5 out of 5 stars Soul Rebels are Amazing.......2000-10-03

Picture yourself a first-time visitor to New Orleans, Louisiana in an out-of-the-way bar. You're there on the recommendation of a friend, not knowing what to expect. The bar is subdued, and most everybody's attention is on the TV showing the Buccaneer playoff game. You nervously ask the bartender in hushed tones, "Aren't the Soul Rebels supposed to be playing here?" He laughs and says, "Right after the game. What y'all gonna drink?" Bourbon, of course.

You wait, and nurse your drink. Then a second. The game ends. Instrument cases appear from under tables. Men with trumpets, drums, sousaphones and trombones assemble in the corner. Just as you realize you were sitting with the Soul Rebels all along, you are hit with a wall of funky brass sound and rhythm unlike anything you have ever heard before. Consider yourself lucky. You have stumbled upon the house bar of one of the most unique and talented brass bands in New Orleans.

The Soul Rebels combine New Orleans brass band sounds with the musical traditions of funk, rap, jazz, reggae and dancehall to create what can only be described as "amazing." I can't stop listening to this disk, and I can't imagine ever growing tired of it. The Soul Rebels revitalize the New Orleans tradition of great music and great musical talent. I only wish they had more than one CD in distribution. Buy this CD; you won't regret it.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?
