Not sure why Sandy and the Boys decided to squeeze out this measly EP (under 20 minutes) rather than craft a regular long-player? After all, there hasn't been a full-length BS & HFRB release since 1997's super Feelin' Kinda Lucky; in 1998, Big Sandy released a solo album of doo-wop and R&B (Dedicated to You) while the Fly-Rite Boys produced their own sparkling country-jazz record. Maybe Sandy just couldn't wait to get all the troops back into the studio together because the six Sandy originals here find his collective reaching new heights. There's stomping boogie-woogie, Merle Travis-inspired fingerpicking novelties, and Western swing rave-ups--all delivered with an ease and sophistication that they've never quite found before. Great for the road.......2007-05-11

I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!

[...] Honestly, it isn't THAT THAT great, but its good enough for its price. I'd say that your $ pays off, for a while. I've noticed how after a long time, it gets aggrivating at times. No harm meant, "Beethoven lover". I just mean don't plunge into this cd with all the hopes in the world. Besides, it's just my opinion, so you may like it more than me. All i can say is; a) listen to some samples before you buy, b)know this is not REALLY the great Beethoven himself, and c) enjoy YOUR music, whatever it may be.

This a great priced cd, but the content is why it is so cheap. It's a true-amateur album. Beethoven Lover is over her/his head. This is the real world, not a fantasy-everyone-likes-every-type-of-music world. Deal with it and agree with me. It isn't so great.

will probably stick to Wendy Carlos's,cheesy,runningly cheesy,blue cheese smelly,even,as it might be,still holds the original pace and campy pomp.

Good Introduction but poor quality.......2005-09-12

This is a good introduction to Tchaikovsky for the beginner that gives a broad sampling of his work. Considering the price, it's a good value if someone is just wanting to begin exploring classical music or Tchaikovsky in particular.
However, the sound quality on this albumn is quite poor and there are much higher quality Tchaikovsky recordings available.

Tchaikovsky's Greatest Pieces of Music.......2000-09-04

Here are some of Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky's greatest works. His Nutcraker, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty ballets are the most famous in the repoirtaire. The Symphony No. 5 and 6 are very excellent symphonic orchestrations. However, despite all the good stuff in here from the Russian master, the performers and conductors cannot surpass the beauty and artistry that such Tchaikovsky music masters as Dorati, Markevitch and Ormandy are. So if you want quality Tchaikovsky, get those conductor renditions. However, for a Tchaikovsky beginner, these pieces will get you hooked. This is a good cd to begin with for a Tchaikovsky listener. I am a Tchaikovsky listener ever since a friend recommended his glorious works to me. I am a Mozart fan but Tchaikovsky is undoubtedly the greatest Romantic composer of all time. He combines Russian melodies (Russian dances, mazurkas, waltzes) and gives them a definite Western romantic feel. He was friends with such noted Romantic composers as Camille Saint Saens, known to create such marvelous music of the era- Carnival of the Animals (now popular through Dysney) and Danse Macabre, to name only a small portion. Tchaikovsky also adored Mozart and although he is not exactly a Classical composer, he greatly admires the beauty of Mozart's works. Three cheers for Tchaikovsky !

I think that Peter Tchaikovsky is one of the greatest composers ever. His Nutcracker suite and Capriccio Italien are wonderful pieces of music, as well as the rest of his pieces! This CD is definetly worth owning if you like classical music.

A Classic Comedy with a Soundtrack.......2007-07-19

An Experience Not To Be Missed.......2001-02-05

I've always enjoyed Victor Borge for as long as I can remember and it was thus a considerable blow to me when he died on Christmas Eve 2000 (not just because I was going to see him when he came to Australia).

Victor Borge didn't know any English when he arrived in the USA and thus appreciated all the silliness of the language as he was learning it - this really shows through in his patter from this concert recording.

The CD begins with the "Comedy In Music" concerts he did in the 50s. Here, it is possible to understand the lively wit and sense of timing he had throughout his life as he calmly sends classical music up. He begins with a "request number" and just as quickly dispenses with it before a wonderful discourse on the merits of an intermission ("We're going to have an intermission of one and a half hours tonight"). After much discussion on such topics as Rachmaninov's domestic situation; why his second piano concerto was written in 4 flats; the number of pedals on a grand piano and so on, we are ready for him to play some music.

Following the "excerpts from Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto" (I won't give away the punchline), he then admonishes an audience member for being late before launching into the "variations on a theme" routine. Most of this sequence can be understood by people with little classical music knowledge, although some of the more obscure composers are not ones I'm familiar with.

Following this, he then launches into two "medley" routines. The first one (Comedy In Music Part 2) derives a lot of the humor from the arguments he has with the audience ("Don't you know it? If you don't, why should I?") about the tunes. The second one (3 Borge Favorites) is punctuated with Borge's silly observations about the music.

Borge then turns his hand to the opera by sending up Mozart in his hilarious "Mozart Opera". These are followed by "Family Background", a riotous account of the Borge family history (it is neccessary to remember that "Borge" was Victor's original first name in order to get one of the jokes) and "Phonetic Punctuation". The less said about the Punctuation the better - as it would spoil the listening pleasure.

In short, if you enjoy seeing how the language can be misused, this is the album to get. The jokes will never get old, they'll just seem cleverer. After all, it's not every day you have "Brahms" spelled backwards for you.

Comedy in music by the funny Victor Borge.......2000-06-08

After having seen a television special featuring Victor Borge many years ago, I wanted to hear more of his comedic music routines. I was unable to find a videorecording at my local public library, but I did find this live audio recording.

All six routines on this album are well done by Borge, successfully incorporating his sharp and witty sense of humour into each piece. In particular, I enjoyed Comedy In Music (Part I), especially the variations on "Happy Birthday". Borge shows his great skill at the piano as well as his admirable ability to incorporate the styles of many different composers into the music. His playing is spirited and playful, accompanied by his well-timed jokes and plays on words (e.g. "You want to hear Bach? Which one -- Johann Sebastien or Offen?)

The reason I only give this recording 4 stars instead of 5 is because not every listener will get the jokes and his music variations. You need to have listened to a relatively wide range of classical music and composers before you can truly appreciate his humour. As well, since this is only an audio recording, the listener misses out on the visual antics of Borge, which is why I had first looked for a videorecording to see and hear the whole experience.

Nevertheless, Victor Borge Live! is a delightful album for any classical music fan and I recommend it to anyone with a sense of humour.

Great album!.......2007-06-22

I won this cd at a Christmas show that Tonic Sol-Fa had in my hometown. I would have to say that my favorite songs are Brown Eyed Girl (they do such an amazing job on this remake, it sounds like the original but with their melodies it's awesome!!) 29 Ways To My Baby's Door (their vocals together are perfect and i love the beat) and Sold. I find myself singing along to that in my car just smiling and laughing the whole time. The beat is a lot of fun and the way they can make their voices sound like that blows me away. I would definitely recommend this album. It even has Scooby Doo...I mean who doesn't love Scooby Doo? I'm sure kids would love it!

I saw them live on their Christmas tour, I am now a devoted fan. No instruments, and never should be. They have a style all their own and show it! Must have CD and get all their CD's while your at it!

Don't let the low price fool you!.......2006-03-02

I have a very large CD collection because I have never let low prices scare me from a purchase. Yes, I have bought some dogs but I have bought just as many full-priced dogs as the super budget kind. Many of my favorite CDs cost a one dollar or even less. This CD comes from Sony. The line is known as Infinity and almost all of the performances come from Russia or Georgia (the European Georgia, not ours). This particular CD has some rarely played Strauss waltzes plus the more famous ones such as the Blue Danube. The performances are excellent in every way. There is plenty of warmth and great playing and most importantly, plenty of energy. The rarely played waltzes make this bargain a must for any serious Strauss lover.

Good Collection Bad Performances and Recordings.......2000-06-22

This is a good collection of various pieces of music written by the genius who was Johann Strauss. However as is the case with so many classical collections this CD has terrible recordings and bad performances. Then again I guess you get what you pay for, seeing as how this CD was 4.27 when I published this review, I guess in a way that makes this CD an okay deal since it does give you a good taste of what Strauss' style was like. Personally, if I hadn't been given this CD I'm not sure I would have bought it.

Comedy with a difference. What!? No swearing????
Todays comedian often resort to expletives to get their humour across. Victor is old school, very talented musically and is funny to all ages. For the young a very funny introduction to the classics.

Shear Delight.......2000-11-13

As a very small boy growing up in Australia in the early 1960's, my Father introduced me to the talents of Victor Borge when we used to listed to two of his albums, 'Comedy in Music' and this one 'Caught in the Act'. They contain all the magic and charm of this most talented pianist and comedian. This particular album has some of his finest work, whether it be his comedy or his brilliant piano playing. Together these albums make up the story from the beginning and will encourage to seek out other works of his. All my brothers (and I have 7)still laugh every time we hear him perform. Once hooked you can't resist. I have seen him live and have videos of his later performances where he performs a number of his best known routines most of which are first performed on these two albums. I can honestly say that you will not be disappointed with this CD. I have recently bought the record version of Comedy in Music and would part with blood to get this one on record. Not sure why Sandy and the Boys decided to squeeze out this measly EP (under 20 minutes) rather than craft a regular long-player? After all, there hasn't been a full-length BS & HFRB release since 1997's super Feelin' Kinda Lucky; in 1998, Big Sandy released a solo album of doo-wop and R&B (Dedicated to You) while the Fly-Rite Boys produced their own sparkling country-jazz record. Maybe Sandy just couldn't wait to get all the troops back into the studio together because the six Sandy originals here find his collective reaching new heights. There's stomping boogie-woogie, Merle Travis-inspired fingerpicking novelties, and Western swing rave-ups--all delivered with an ease and sophistication that they've never quite found before. Western swing king Big Sandy & His Fly Rite Boys ,are at it again, playing more late 1940's, to mid 50's sounding western swing, with touches of rockabilly. WOW!!! This cd is short but sweet, actually it's all uptempo and pretty dang near HOT!!! Well worth acquiring for an yBig Sandy fan.

This is a short CD because it's actually an expanded version of a 7" single (remember those?). And it's good, like pretty much everything Big Sandy puts out. Wahoo!

I love Big Sandy, and this new CD is as great as the last one "Feel'n Kinda Lucky". A must have for Big Sandy fans and any fan of Western Swing.

Sibelius and Kajanus ........2003-09-05

For numerous reasons this cd introduces an important, if not essential, compilation including some of the best music ever by Sibelius. Here the highlight is a small opus, `Andante festivo', which Sibelius conducted for this recording (quite a rare document). Although not spectacular at first, the morceau receives a definitive performance here. Mikko Franck's approach to `En Saga' makes of it one of the finest : In my opinion, his ranks highly with Salonen (L.A. Philharmonic) - the latter still considered a top by many listeners and/or critics. `En Saga' garnered plenty of good, if not great, recordings - among which Ormandy (Sony), Berglund (EMI), Horst Stein (London-Decca), Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic (EMI), Alexander Gibson (Chandos), Vanska (BIS), Levi (Telarc) and Andrew Davis with the Royal Stockholm orchestra (Finlandia) are deservingly celebrated. Old recordings include Beecham - whose version did not really impress me - and the eminent Furtwangler (Berlin, 1943) in a sensational, powerful, heroic and recognizably stark presentation, characteristically germanic-sounding (distinct in tone and temperament, mind you, a true German Sibelius!). Indeed, Furtwangler's doesn't sound much nordic - or romantic - but rather Germanic. Granted, Furtwangler's `Saga' may seem to sound drab or a little detached at first, but for a host of reasons his account remains an impressive one. So, now my favorite is the version offered here by Mikko Franck - a reading that outdoes most of the above in terms of orchestral detail and with its clever handling of textures and "layers" of sound. His `Saga' enters Sibelius's northern world through tangible technical approach and with, seemingly, a great deal of intuitive insight. Illuminating work, `En Saga' is one of the greatest tone poems ever done by the hand of man. `Pohjola's Daughter' is very distinctive, and receives excellent sound (for the most part of the disc, anyway, sonics are superb). Conductor Thomas Ollila and the Tampere Philharmonic of Finland produce fine sound : It is a well-rehearsed and staunch, fastened rendering. Barbirolli, Koussevitzky, as well as Paavo Berglund and especially Bernstein - with the NewYork Philharmonic - do offer "the last word" in `Pohjola's Daughter' (the trailblazing 1930 Kajanus/LSO is arguably the greatest), but the version reviewed here shouldn't be overlooked. Among "outsiders" conducting `Pohjola', i have a sweet spot for Yoel Levi on Telarc (a superb set of tone poems, issued as CD-80320). The short works `Impromptu' and `The Lover' are curios that make for good filler tracks. The last work to complete this cd (from Finnish composer and conductor Robert Kajanus) is a solid performance of the acclaimed tone poem `Aino' - a lovely classic of genuine Suomi signature, much different from Sibelius yet linked musically with the "way" of the latter's compositional style. Panula does very good things, the direction seems to be strong and at the same time flexible. An excellent closure to a fascinating, enthralling cd. *****

This is one of my favorite albums by the Statlers. "Blessed Be" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. All the songs are very upbeat and have a great message. It is truly the Statlers at their best.

These are great songs, even if you don't like country music. The Statler Brothers sing in perfect four-part harmony, and they put fun in their message. This is sing-along and feel good music. If you play guitar, these songs are nearly all simple to learn.
