From Amazon.co.uk

Less than two years after the death of her mentor, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris recorded her first album for Reprise. Pieces of the Sky inaugurated a suite of four mid-'70s albums and a surprising number of hits: her sound was clearly traditional, but also tastefully up-to-date with folk-rock and singer/songwriter styles, and her crystalline, febrile vocals took standards such as "Love Hurts" and "If I Could Only Win Your Love" back up the charts. This compilation brings together her biggest hits, and shows why Harris is important and why she continues to make adventurous country music. Through unfailingly tasteful song selection, brilliant occasional songwriting, and her cool, velvety soprano, Harris extended Gram Parsons's vision of "cosmic American music" and made it her own. --Roy Kasten

Album Description

Masterful at rock, country, folk, bluegrass, and more, Emmylou Harris is one of the most distinctive and visionary voices in contemporary music. The artist's lucid, achingly gorgeous vocals and a string of celebrated albums-many featuring her acclaimed "Hot Band"-have earned Harris eleven Grammys and made this alt-country/roots-rock innovator a legend in her own time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!.......2007-06-14

I thoroughly enjoy every song on this CD, and listen to it often.

5 out of 5 stars Add this to your collection!.......2007-01-13

I originally bought this CD for 1 or 2 songs. I saw her perform with Elvis Costello singing "Love Hurts" and I thought it was fantastic. I was disappointed when I couldn't find this duo singing; but, decided to purchase this CD. It really is very good. I am amazed by her talent.

5 out of 5 stars Another vote for Emmylou's voice...........2006-08-25

I definitely agree, that listening to the best of this CD, is pure heaven...and to my ears, if you buy this beautiful album, just enable the following cuts and listen to them over.....and over...that's heaven....

Boulder to Birmingham
Pancho and Lefty
To Know Him is to Love Him
Orphan Girl
Michaelangelo
The Connection

Of course, if you buy this CD, you will probably have some different cuts that you also love. Emmylou Harris, we all love you and your voice, and your music...

Heavenly Heartaches & Highways...

5 out of 5 stars To touch the heart........2006-07-18

The fact that Emmylou Harris is breathtakingly beautiful distracts only very slightly from her amazing grace as a singer. She is truly touched and truly moving.

4 out of 5 stars One fault---this needed to be a two-disk set!.......2006-05-30

Otherwise, it's wonderful. Really does span the years, but I think there are some places where more emphasis is needed and would have preferred to see a second disk to do it.

The Grascals' acclaimed 2005 debut demonstrated their strength was modern, streamlined bluegrass with ample nods to tradition. Brimming with instrumental virtuosity, this near-perfect effort reiterates those strengths. By seamlessly blending the new with the traditional, they allow the hilarious contemporary number "Being Me" (featuring a Dierks Bentley cameo) to coexist with "Don't Tell Mama," a moralistic, anti-DUI ballad complete with a somber George Jones recitation. Their takes on Merle Haggard's "You Don't Have Very Far to Go" (enhanced by 1960s pedal steel great Lloyd Green), the Osborne Brothers' "Hard Times" and "Roll Muddy River," and Bill Monroe's 1940s favorite "Will You Be Lovin' Another Man" are spirited without being imitative. The bluegrass explosion, which brought unprecedented exposure to icons like Ralph Stanley and stardom to Allison Krauss, unfortunately opened the doors for a slew of lesser acts who either wallow in arty pretense or put a campy spin on classic bluegrass. The Grascals here affirm one truth: the best, old or new, will always trump the trendy. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars Very discriminating, well-rounded and resourceful performers.......2006-12-25

Playing Time - 40:40 -- The Grascals are on the fast track. In 2005, their debut CD became one of my top ten favorites of the year. Besides great music, the band is a cohesive and collaborative unit built around six talented friends who share common goals. The group members have had previous professional experience with The Osborne Brothers, Larry Cordle & Lonesome Standard Time, Dolly Parton's Blue-niques, The Sidemen, and many country music superstars. You won't find much better musicians with consummate bluegrass (and country) sensibilities than The Grascals' Terry Eldredge (lead vocals, guitar), Jimmy Mattingly (fiddle), David Talbot (banjo, vocals), Jamie Johnson (guitar, vocals), Danny Roberts (mandolin) and Terry Smith (bass). Dolly Parton invited The Grascals to open all concerts on her Hello, I'm Dolly tour in the fall of 2004, as well as to join other musicians backing up Dolly each evening. Guests on "Long List of Heartaches" include George Jones, Dierks Bentley, Steve Wariner, The Jordanaires, Hargus "Pig" Robbins, Lloyd Green, Bob Mater, and Kent Wells.

These six guys are superior instrumentalists, and every solo resonates with some hot licks. Crisp, clean rhythm guitar and deep resonating bass fill out their sound. The Grascals don't push the envelope too far from conventional traditional bluegrass orthodoxy when they take on more standard fare. As a definite strength, these bluegrass phenoms know exactly what a song requires. Eldredge delivers his lead vocals in a gutsy, high-lonesome manner. The Grascals simply have good taste when it comes to arrangements, techniques employed, and musicianship.

The Grascals' contemporary material allows them to take more risks. Some light percussion (Tom Roady) and pedal steel (Lloyd Green) embellishes track 3, "You Don't Have Very Far To Go," a song of hurt written by Merle Haggard and Red Simpson. The opening up-tempo cut of "Home" has no chorus but incorporates an interesting harmonization of the word "home" each time it comes around at the end of verses. If you're a "master of disaster," then you'll end up right at the top of the catchy "Long List of Heartaches." Paying respect to the seminal influences of Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt, The Grascals tear up "Will You Be Loving Another Man?" They keep that one at full throttle. Dierks Bentley shares verses with Terry Eldredge as they express the things they're really best at are "Being Me" as they have a little angel and devil haunting them. Hey, I never knew that "lor dee dee" is really just hillbilly for "c'la vie." (that's life!) The only instrumental on the album, "Cut Your Wheels" has a nice descending chordal run, but I think a guest resophonic guitarist would've really helped embellish this one.

"My Night to Howl" was first presented years ago by the Boys From Indiana, and some exciting mandolin picking is about the only redeeming element of this song that is mostly filler. "Hoedown In Motown" (written by Steve Wariner and Harley Allen) re-establishes the groove with a recipe for partying up north with southern sun, sweet tea, and fried chicken. These are the kind of hooky songs that bluegrass bands need to find to bring expressive variety to their sets. "Don't Tell Mama" is a fantastic ballad about the perils of drinking and driving as a young man dying says, "I can't leave this world with mama thinking, I met the Lord with whiskey on my breath." If you think work's got you down and stressed, then cue up "Hard Times," to hear about a guy so tired of working that he's ready to drink himself to death. They close the set with an inspirational slow ¾-time gospel number, "Did You Forget God Today?" that is first pew.

From traditional to contemporary, The Grascals certainly don't disappoint us with their broad selection of material that will appeal to many tastes. In fact, there are no-holds-barred vocals, tasteful instrumental work, and an overall sound that jumps out of the speakers. I personally enjoy an eclectic set of bluegrass with a few countryish and gospel twists, and that's why I dig this masterful band. The Grascals are very discriminating, well-rounded and resourceful performers with a high degree of showmanship and entertainment value. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Getting better.......2006-09-13

These boys do a right fine job and are definitely worth following. It's apparent that they are shooting for a distinctive style, something above the usual and overdone fare of most Bluegrassers today.

The selections on this CD are well balanced in that they keep light listeners interested while also providing keen observers a good showcase for their diverse talent. Close study reveals that Terry Eldredge and Jamie Johnson both make for outstanding lead singers. The trios are as expected---Good, but this reviewer finds the duets to be the most entertaining. Terry and Jamie have obviously worked hard to match one another's phrasings and slurs, so much so that they leave the listener yearning for more.

As for the boy's picking abilities, here are some random thoughts:

**Unbelievable as it may be, the rhythm guitar is actually playing RHYTHM---as opposed to a stream of punchy syncopated nerve-racking stabs that MIMIC rhythm. KUDOS.
**Having one good lead singer in a band is a plus, but two is nearly unbeatable. Let Jamie sing more, please.
**The fiddle is charmingly understated but excellent. Thanks Guys.

If any criticism is worthy of mention, it would be this: LOSE THE COVERS.
Flatt, Scruggs, and Monroe songs, notwithstanding their importance, have been done to death, to the point that the carcass no longer attracts the skinniest of vultures. As for the Osborne Brothers' signature songs, there's no way under the sun that the boys will ever come close to reaching the peak of that mountain, much less Base Camp. Replace "Roll Muddy River" with another "Long List of Heartaches"---THAT'S where the money is.

If the Grascals continue striving for better recordings, that is, sharpen their abilities, select their material more carefully, and make their sound palatable for more folks, then success is just around the corner for them.

5 out of 5 stars Second "cup" good as the first!.......2006-09-06

Whether in concert or the studio the Grascals have set the bar high for contemporary bluegrass bands! The music is real bluegrass not so diluted with other influences as to be "no-grass" The guest stars,George Jones, add to the music rather than just add a name to the cd for selling power.
The playing is top notch and the vocals are perfect in harmony and pitch. These guys can sing.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2007-03-29

One of the best CD's that I own. Phyllis Hyman shows her vocal skills and ranges. One of the best singers of all time. I put this one in my best CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars This CD stands alone...........2005-12-08

Whether you are a Phyllis Hyman fan of long-standing, or a novice to her music, this CD from Hyman friend and music producer Michael Grimaldi stands alone as her best. The inclusion of her stellar work with jazz legend McCoy Tyner is worth the price alone; Hyman addicts clamored for years to have these three tunes, "In Search Of My Heart", "Love Surrounds Us Everywhere"' and "I'll Be Around" released on CD. Listening to these cuts( which also include the genius of Stanley Clarke, Carlos Santana, Gary Bartz and Buddy Williams), confirm my belief that Phyllis was meant to sing jazz above all else. Tyner's piano and Hyman's voice are a blend of musical perfection, and here you will know that she can scat with the best. Listen to "In Search Of My Heart" and you will hear her croon, perhaps prophetically, "Remember, won't you please, remember me..." Just when you think you have heard her at her best, listen to "I'll Be Around", and you will be left shaking your head at the size of her talent. Included in this compilation are rare and unreleased songs such as "Sleep On It", "If You Ever Change Your Mind", "Do You Love Him",and Hottest Love Around", and the achingly beautiful title song, "In Between The Heartaches", a Dionne Warwick song that Hyman makes her own. Also featured are gems with Grover Washington, Norman Connors, Jon Lucien, Pharoah Sanders and Bill Lee.
But this CD is much more than the music, Michael Grimaldi recalls his friendship and admiration of Hyman in extensive liner notes, and uniquely, takes the listener on a journey with him through personal stories and rare photos of Phyllis. This CD is obviously a labor of love, and it shows. What it means for fans of Phyllis Hyman is a unique gift from someone who knew her not only as a musical legend, but as a beautiful talented friend. If I were forced to choose one CD from the many I have of hers, this one would be it. Buy it, no buy two and give one to someone you love.

5 out of 5 stars Phyliss lives on!.......2005-12-03

In Between the heartaches is a must have for all Phyllis Hyman fans. A great collection of unreleased songs as well as familiar tracks that you dont hear frequently on "quiet storm" radio rotations.
Phyliss always sings from the heart thus letting you into her
world. This cd is no exception and hopefully there will be more
lost songs found and released for all of us who can never get enough of this soulful diva!

5 out of 5 stars a true master piece of good music.......2005-09-10

I have been looking for a CD of Phyliss Hyman that contained more than 1 good Jazz song and this one by far is truly the best.
I would like to thank the group of people or persons who picked and put together all of the songs that I can remember since Junior High school, great compulation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Top of the line.......2001-11-03

Guy Mitchell had a string of hits through the 50s with his best known tune, the massive number one hit, "Singing The Blues" sitting on top of the charts for ten weeks in 1956. An accomplishment made even more amazing in that Marty Robbins' version made it into the top 20 at the same time. Mitchell hit the top again in 1958 with the catchy "Heartaches By The Number". In between he had several charted tunes before he quit Columbia Records and dropped off the pop charts by 1961. This collection of his Columbia recordings comes from Richard Weize's Bear Family Records in Germany. While pricy, this is a top-quality, generous 25-track compilation with the best sound available for these tracks. Tracks 1,5,7-9 are in stereo with the remainder in mono. As has come to be expected from Bear Family product, this disc comes with a 24-page booklet with a detailed musical history and complete discography. An outstanding CD - far superior to most anything else on the market for Mitchell's recordings.

Hitting the Billboard charts in 1977, this album features Oblivion Express members Lenny White, Jack Mills & Alex Ligertwood. Auger fans have been screamin' for this one, so here it is, finally! Wounded Bird. 2003.

Having never heard this before it arrived, but being a long time Auger fan, I could not be more pleased. Great singing from ex Santana member ALEX LIGERTWOOD. The spiritual lyrics are a plus to me ( a believer ) and the keyboard work as usual is right on time ! Lenny White on drums and Clive Chaman lay down the right groove to move this down the track . I just saw the Express in Va Beach , VA in May 2003 and was able to talk to Brian Auger after the show . He is a open , friendly man as well as a gifted musician. He autographed this cd cover for me. Thanks Brian for a night of inspiration !

    Album Description

Originally released in 1981 & 1982 on the Epic record label and now appearing for the first time as this 2-on-1 CD. Two number 1 hits came out of his 1981 album 'Waitin' For The Sun To Shine', and the awards started arriving. Ricky Skaggs is largely responsible for a back-to-basics movement in country music. Waitin' For The Sun To Shine was Ricky's first album to be released after signing to the Epic Record label and brought him into the mainstream. The album has a straightforward mountain approach with one of the best songs being the title track, recently covered by Lee Ann Womack on her There's More Where That Came From LP. On 1982's Highways & Heartaches, Skaggs developed his bluegrass roots with new traditionalist sensibilities and catchy pop tunes, making this album one of his best. Four of the tracks, 'Heartbroke', 'You've Got A Lover', 'I Wouldn't Change You If I Could' & 'Highway 40 Blues', were chart-toppers. The remainder of the decade found Skaggs often at the top of both the country single and album charts. Includes full sleeve notes by John Tobler. 19 total tracks. Gottdiscs. 2005.

Already a country music veteran by age 25, Ricky Skaggs wasn't content to have his passion for traditional country music and bluegrass confined to small independent labels. Between 1979 and 1982, Skaggs was somehow able to force-feed his taste for country's roots to the Nashville mainstream. Sweet Temptation, his 1979 solo debut for tiny Sugar Hill Records, impressed listeners with its old-school blend of honky-tonk and bluegrass and served as an alternative to the popular Urban Cowboy style of the day. Skaggs followed that the next year with his exquisite close-harmony duet album with Tony Rice, not exactly a move toward the center. Still, Epic rewarded him with a major-label deal and even allowed him to produce his own stuff. Highways & Heartaches, released in 1982, was his second Epic effort, and it spawned three No. 1 singles. Though it deftly fused traditional country with a touch of modern polish, the record wasn't as much a departure sonically for Skaggs as it was a departure psychologically for mainstream Nashville. Reissued in 2000, it's now considered one of the first neo-traditionalist triumphs, and it remains Skaggs's most successful merging of artistic and commercial concerns. --Marc Greilsamer

    5 out of 5 stars A country music milestone!.......2005-09-11

With this album, Ricky Skaggs pointed the way out of the cheesy, overly processed, disco-diseased quagmire that country music had become by the early Eighties. Using the best elements from bluegrass, traditional country and modern country, he and his band created a sound that truly jumped out of the radio. Excellent musicianship, beautiful vocal work, and memorable songs that deal with timeless and universal human situations. This music is now 23 years old, but like all great works, it doesn't sound dated in the least. A masterpiece from one of country's greatest.

5 out of 5 stars Country Traditionalsit Perfection.......2000-12-04

Highways & Heartaches is truly a treasured classic. Thank goodness they have reissued it. Skaggs' vocal talent soars in all 10 tracks including the monster #1 hits Heartbroke, I Wouldn't Change You If I Could, and Highway 40 Blues. This is Ricky Skaggs at the peak of his career. Possibly his best stuff ever recorded. This album led the traditionalist movement of the 1980's, which is often neglected by many on music row!

5 out of 5 stars One of the man's best.......2000-05-09

Glad to see this album back in print; it's one of Skagg's best country albums and was the one that really set his solo career flying. "Heartbroke" is a great rouser and the honky-tonk rhythm of "Don't Think I'll Cry,"the strong dollup of bluegrass in "Highway 40 Blues" and "Don't Let Your Sweet Love Die" and the interplay between Skaggs and the other players here---especially The Whites and most especially the terrific Buck White on the 88s---makes this a great country outing all around. It's a shame that Ricky Skaggs decided to pack in the country side of his music and just stick to bluegrass, but at least this album's back out on the market, where it belongs. Now, if Sony'll get WAITIN' FOR THE SUN TO SHINE back in print, life would be grand!

To keep it short and sweet... this is the best Ricky Skaggs album out there. I've been waiting for this one to become availible on CD. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Best Budget Patsy Around -- Sweet Dreams Come True.......2007-06-21

Purchasing this CD and expecting no more than a quick, budget-friendly fix, I was more than pleasantly surprised to find a well-programmed (albeit short) selection of Patsy Cline's hits (I can listen to "Crazy" and "I Fall to Pieces" all day) and "shoulda-beens". An utter lack of liner notes allow to appreciate the music on its own merits, as Ms. Cline was embracing the silkier sounds of country-pop.

Despite its slightly subpar fidelity (another indication of the album's budget release status), it's an ideal, romantic compilation of legendary tracks -- an ideal starting point for those of you just discovering Cline's work, an ideal one-shot for fans looking for an inexpensive almost-best of.

5 out of 5 stars the only one I need.......1999-12-28

I got this in a bargain-bin, and it was a heck of a deal. Don't let the price keep you away - the production is great. It's surely incomplete for hardcore fans, but for those who love her voice and need some of Patsy in their collection, it's perfect.
