gets under your skin.......2001-07-02

i picked this disc up on advice of a friend who'd included it in her list here. on first listen, only a couple of tracks held my attention. but after a few plays, the others began to take hold. what you ultimately notice is that the melodies and lyrics weave together to create a kind of sad but sometimes beautiful state of mind. listened to late at night, it makes sense.

I'm from St. Louis and I never heard of these guys. I picked this up on a whim (great cover art) and I was really impressed. I like a lot of new songwriter stuff -- Elliott Smith, Badly Drawn Boy, David Gray, etc. Going to the Sun has a lot to offer. Great lyrics. Definate mid-western feel (has a couple 'rock' songs on it) but 'modern' in the best sense of the word. If you like acoustic guitar with strings and organs, really well written songs, poetic lyrics, etc. you'll probably really like this CD. These guys are a really well kept secret...

absolutely wonderful.......2006-08-16

I bought this CD on a trip to Canada in June 2001. I found this CD in a gift shop in Glacier National Park (Montana) and it was just wonderful. The CD seems to be based on a day's journey - it starts the morning with "Alpenglow" and ends the evening with "Cedar Grove". Each song has its own unique feel. I would recommend that anyone who is going to Canada to pick up a copy of this CD.

I bought it a few years ago on my trip in the beautifull Canadian Rockies...This cd is awesome when u gotta go back to the reality of the real world big city life...its a little piece of BC you can bring home with you.

Not what I was looking for........2005-06-18

This is OK. I much prefer Inquisition Symphony Metallica (Tribute) by Apocalyptica. I preferred the four cellos of Apocalyptica to the over use of the violin in the String Quartet Tribute. In my opinion this album would have been much better if they had brought the violin down an octave or two. As it is, the violin sounds too whiney. It's not that I do not like violins, I love Vanessa Mae and Hilary Hahn's work, it is just that this album is almost painful to listen to.

A great tribute for easy listening..........2005-03-10

This is quite an amazing tribute to 3 Doors Down if you're looking for a relaxing version of American Rock & Roll. It didn't blow me away, but I did find it surprisingly good. Very good. Just don't expect to be rockin' to this, because, well, it's a string tribute, meaning violins, cellos, ect... It's meant to be soothing and relaxing.

I'm quite a big fan of both 3 Doors Down and the String Quartet Tributes, and I have to say that this is one of the finest tributes they have done. The tribtes are pretty much on que with the original songs, so you'll pretty much be able to distinguish which songs are which from the beginning. You might even want to sing to it.

I'm not going to do a song by song review, because they're all great. Some are better than others, but it's a great tribute overall. My favorite songs, though, are "Kryptonite", "Loser", and "Here Without You." I think those are the most well done songs on the album. I must note, though, that it's pretty much necessary to know the songs beforehand. Otherwise, you really won't be able to fully appreciate this tribute, and the songs will probably get repetitive. When you listen to the tribute, you'll pretty much be thinking about the original songs and putting them together in your mind.

I suggest this tribute to any 3 Doors Down fan, as I'm sure they'd appreciate it as much as I did.

This CD is TRULY amazing !!! This CD was my first "Blind Purchase" I have ever made, seeing as how everyone gets hyped up when they hear "3 Doors Down" and let me tell you !!! This CD rocks !!! This CD inspired my to purchase all the rest of the 3 Doors Down CDs, and now, I can sing along with the music !!! Also, I have been playing the violin for 5 years {Going on 6 !!!}, so now, I can even play the violin along with the songs !!! After All ... Once you listen the the ENTIRE CD on repeat mode, for 6 hours straight, you get to REALLY know the melody !!! This CD also inspired me to purchase more of the STRING QUARTET TRIBUTE CDs !!! So far, I have the: SQT to Evanescence, SQT to Beyonce, SQT to Clay Aiken, and the SQT to Staind !!!

Awesome!!!.......2003-11-19

This cd sounds awesome. It takes a little while to tell which song they are playing, but when you recognize it you just start singing along with it. My favorite way to listen to this cd is playing it simultaneously with "The Better Life" or "Away from the Sun."

Gershwin filtered through a modern master.......2004-01-08

Michael Finnissy is finally getting his due, and this recording is one of a number of excellent recent ones that show him at his quirky best. Finnissy has completely rethought these old standards, going much further than simply taking the melodies and inserting new chords underneath them. Some freedom with the rhythms echo some of the grand old piano transcriptions from the past -- an interesting reference and high praise. And the textures here are crucial: all of the piano lines are important, from top to bottom, and Ian Pace's intelligent renderings make all of this audible.

I hope this disc, as well as Pace's other Finnissy recordings, will push the composer's profile even higher. Many of these would make clever encores in the right context. (And I look forward to those recitals!) Some listeners may find it difficult to absorb too much of this recording at once, since it's all quite concentrated. Three or four of these arrangements at one time might be recommended for newcomers. Nevertheless, this is an outstanding example of Finnissy's creative mind coupled with Pace's exemplary artistry.

Sound quality by Metier is excellent, with Finnissy's complexity put forth with wonderful clarity. A witty, enlightening and very persuasive disc.

not the Finnissy I know.......2000-04-13

Ian Pace is a marvelous pianist of the new or old complexity. He has the entire repertoire of the new under his fingers and mind. He can a be a bit passive however in the live performances I've heard in Chicago in particular. Well he is new to the scene. Finnissy on the the other hand has been making constructing,concocting and mesmerizing those who follow this music for quite some time. Like preaching to the already converted. His music taps nicely into post-modernist thinking, the mileau of utilizing borrowed found objects,already in the world- material but transformed and transmogrified in such a way that the metamorphosis becomes something quite relevant,brilliant and unexpected from the materials given, much like Kafka's insect. Finnissy's piano music is quite literally impossible to play, I don't know who can play it including everyone here mentioned. When for instance you have 72 tones against 57, resulting in an asymmetrical odd bit of musical irrationality(at least within the Western canon)who can do that? . The computer I'm on now the Finale software can play that without a flinch. Gershwin here is not transformed interestingly enough, at least from the perspective of Finnissy's other master piano concoctions like the Verdi Transcriptions or the English Country Tunes. Both those works made the materials sink and respond opaquely,virtuositically becoming part of the blizzards of tones, and filigreed moments scouring and traversing the entire register of the piano. The Gershwin here by contrast seems like a tired pianist sitting in a lounge trying to recapture an old dust-ladened flame, Casablanca? .
