Come Along & Ride This Train [Box set]

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Johnny Cash was one of the first to explore the idea of the concept album in country music. This set brings together all of his uniquely American albums, Ride This Train, Blood Sweat & Tears, Mean As Hell, Ballads of the True West, Bitter Tears, America: A 200 Year Salute, From Sea to Shining Sea, and The Rambler. Bob Allen writes, "This collection eloquently embodies one man's love, celebration, curiosity, anguish, and personal vision of his native land."

No stranger to the realm of children's records, They Might Be Giants have seen success with their CD No! and the book-and-CD combo Bed, Bed, Bed. Their latest CD, Here Come the ABCs, offers up 25 alphabetically themed songs. However, as is their charming way, the two Johns (Flansburgh and Linnell), use the letters as merely the connective tissue, allowing them to pursuit intriguing flights of fancy that consider everything from the relative power of letters and sounds to animal hijinks. Just as they've always done, there are wistful ballads and high octane rockers. TMBG have always been a family-friendly band, and this disc works just fine for adult fans, who can rightfully consider this simply their newest release. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars All-time favorite DVD for kids.......2007-07-18

My family loves this DVD. All of the songs and accompanying animation is very creative, while teaching kids the alphabet. The songs are not annoying like some kids music, and my husband and I find ourselves going around singing the songs all the time. The CD that comes with the DVD is great for taking along in the car.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for Kids and their Grown-ups!.......2007-06-10

I bought "Here Come the ABC's" for a friend for her birthday after she watched it with my son. She adores the set. They Might Be Giants performs wonderfully catchy songs that are both easy to remember and challenge thinking. My son, who is 2, enjoys the puppets and the vivid and sometimes strange animation sequences. Favorite songs in our household include "Alphabet of Nations" (me), "E Eats Everything" (my son), and "Alphabet Lost and Found" (my husband). This set is one that I would recommend to anyone who interacts with young children learning to play with language. It grabs their attention, and they don't mind at all.

5 out of 5 stars My daughter loves it!!!!.......2007-05-30

At least once a day my daughter asks to watch the video. I don't mind because the songs are fun, origional, and educational. I find myself singing along!

5 out of 5 stars my little one loves this DVD!.......2007-05-04

My son has been watching this DVD since he was about 9 months old. He is over a year old now and loves it even more than when we first got it. Its also the only dvd he has that i don't get sick of watching over and over. I can't wait for here come the 123's

5 out of 5 stars We both love it.......2007-04-18

FYI, it is a very loud DVD so do not have the volume up too loud. My 2-year-old and I both love this DVD. He sings the songs and is learning to recognize his ABC's. What a fun way to learn. We use the CD in the car and when he is in the bathtub with his floating letters. He is learning to go to the "QU" letters when he hears them in the song. Great Job!

When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. 4 out of 5 stars Ring introduction critique.......2006-11-04

This is very worthwhile, at the same time it requires time, patience and attention, but it does provide some keys to better enjoyment of a sensational piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16

This may look an intimidating, daunting and dull prospect - a 2+ hour lecture on the motifs in the Ring. Don't be put off. Whether you're a relative novice to the Ring and want to find out what it's all about, more experienced with a desire to understand the composer's methods better or an afficionado who thinks he knows it all inside out, there is great pleasure as well as elucidation to be had from this set. Originally made to accompany the Decca Solti Ring, it contains a multitude of musical illustrations taken from those recordings as well as some specially recorded by Solti just for this Introduction.

It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.

On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.

This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28

Deryck Cooke's lecture series upon THE RING is almost as much a classic by now as the Solti RING cycle, with which it was originally issued on LP, and from which it derives its musical examples. The difference is that whereas the Solti RING has been continuously in print ever since it was completed, and was among the first opera sets to benefit from the CD revolution, the Cooke analysis was for long almost totally unobtainable. Now we have it back. It should be welcomed: it is a classic. Cooke's mellow, deep voice with the hint of a Celtic burr - which made him ideal on BBC radio - patiently explains Wagner's melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic metamorphoses to such good effect that if you own this recording, you really require no other RING analysis. (A pity about the abrupt beginnings and endings of too many vocal and orchestral illustrations, though.) Musicology lost a fine, sensitive thinker with Cooke's premature death in 1976.

If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15

I originally bought this set on vinyl in the early 70s when I discovered the Ring in college. I studied the records and booklet assiduously, and after about three run-throughs I finally started getting it. Wow! Thirty-five years later, I still remember Mr. Cooke's analyses of various motive families, and I don't know how I could have mastered and loved the Ring without him. I now own this set on CD and listen again on the rare occasion of attending a Ring performance. My wife calls me a "Ring nut," but of course I'm nuts about many other things as well.

Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.

4 out of 5 stars Very Functional.......2006-03-19

This CD set is excellent for what it sets out to do: present the leitmotives of the Ring according to their relationship to one another and their role in developing both characters and plotlines. Deryck Cooke's lectures on each motive are very insightful, very helpful at cueing the listener into the semantic aspect of Wagner's orchestral writing. The one drawback is that the musical examples are a bit jarring. Without fade-ins or -outs, the engineering is quite barbaric. And though the orchestra was, I believe, conducted by Solti, and is beautifully done, the vocal performances can be quite unpleasant. Point being: this is not background music, but in accomplishing what it sets out to do, it is very successful, and I don't know of anything else like it.

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

No stranger to the realm of children's records, They Might Be Giants have seen success with their CD No! and the book and CD combo Bed, Bed, Bed. Their latest CD, Here Come The ABCs, offers up twenty-five alphabetically themed songs.

5 out of 5 stars No Barney music in our house!.......2007-07-11

My husband and I were TMBG fans in college, so I can't even say how excited we were to be able to buy a "kids" CD/video that we could enjoy just as much as our children! The video is especially good, with the diversity of graphics/live action and all the catchy songs. My kids are 3 & 1, and you're selling your kids short if you don't think they can learn their ABC's in the unique way they're presented by TMBG. I know we feel soooo fortunate to be able to buy all the GREAT music out there being marketed towards kids. Some other favorites in our house are Dan Zanes, Ella Jenkins, and Justin Roberts. And don't over-look all the great compilations out there, we've almost worn out our series from the "Land of Nod" which have some great oldies like Woodie Guthrie....

Here Come the ABCs [CD/DVD Combo]

Since its debut, my kids absolutely LOVE listening to this entire CD over and over again. Why? TMBG's children's songs are just as infectious as the adult songs they wrote in the late 80s/early 90s (remember "Istanbul-Not Constantinople"?). The song melodies and chord selections are not the only eclectic traits that make TMBG tunes so unusually appealing to our children (and to the inner child in each adult!); its the ordinary yet peculiar lyrics that make TMBG songs notable and easily assimilated into our minds for later retrieval. So, don't be surprised if you find your kids AND YOURSELF start humming "I C U" in the car on the way to school ... What tickled me even more about this CD is that my youngest learned her ABCs before she turned one, just from reciting the songs over and over and over and over and over again ... And the bundled DVD made the learning experience more stimulating and permanent, amplifying the usual TMBG weird factor with what appeared to be animated nonsense to us, but was really some intelligible, educational cartoons for my kids. I never would have guessed that band I listened to as a young adult would ever captivate my own kids! The verdict? - 5 stars - Buy it when you see it on the shelf, especially if bundled with DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Quirky and funny, in classic TMBG style.......2007-01-09

I bought this CD for my 2-year-old, and when it arrived in the mail my fiance, a big TMBG fan, put it on for him. Both of them loved it; Dad and baby both love "D is for Drums" and "E eats everything." I'm a finicky person when it comes to music, and I was a little wary of the idea of TMBG doing children's music. I was pleasantly surprised to find that TMBG really delivered on this album for everyone, child and adult alike. I enjoyed "Can You Find It?" and "The Alphabet Lost and Found," myself, for their musical cleverness and sense of humor. The bonus tracks are a lot of fun, too; my fiance likes to put on "Clap your hands" when he needs a boost.

If you have a sense of humor, an intelligent kid between 18 months and four years old, and an appreciation for satirical, intentionally goofy music, you'll love this CD. If you're more interested in genuinely educating your child, maybe this isn't the best thing for them, but they'll still most likely enjoy bopping around to it with you.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good for the whole family.......2006-07-23

We got this originally as just the DVD as a gift. We've like it so much we're getting the CD as well. It's a great set of songs. We especially like Go for G, Who put the alphabet in Alphabetical Order, and E eats Everything

2 out of 5 stars TMBG should stick to quirky alternative pop!.......2006-05-01

This CD is a total JOKE, it is so BAD! It is an obvious 'grab' by 'John squared' (Johns Flansburgh and Linnell) for a piece of the very lucrative and booming baby market, and it falls short bigtime. The songs, if you want to call them that, are beyond quirky and follow overly-simplistic structure that anyone could have come up with in 5 minutes while sitting on the John (pun intended)! It is AS annoying as listening to fingernails on a chalkboard, and then some. Even my 8 month old stopped smiling when I put this drivel on, and usually she smiles and giggles when I play most of my other 'for baby' CD's. There are much BETTER choices out there for babies and kids music. 'John squared' should stick to making alternative music for the 'older set', which is what they are great at!

4 out of 5 stars Choo Choo Music.......2007-06-05

I ordered this CD for my three year old son after seeing how much he loved the I Love Toy Trains DVD's. I Love Toy Trains DVD Parts (1-3) He was so excited when I gave it to him, and he wanted to listen to it right away. He loves to listen to it when we are in the car. Track number one has a great train bell sound effect that he loves, and "Choo Choo Blues" is one that he loves to sing along to. I plan to look into more James Coffey music for my son.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for kids that love choo-choo trains!!!.......2006-08-22

I bought this CD to play as background music at my son's train themed birthday party. All of the kids loved the music and we had a wide age range. I highly recommend this CD for kids whether they have a love of trains or not. Very fun car riding tunes!

5 out of 5 stars Turn up the volume!.......2000-11-14

I have two kids (a boy and a girl ages 3 1/2 and 2) who love this music. My son tells me to stop talking and turn up the volume when we listen. They love to get their instruments out and play along. James Coffey writes the music for a train video series produced by Tom McComas (....) that parents will want to check out. My kids prefer these videos over the Thomas series and I think the music is the reason.

5 out of 5 stars Right On Track!.......2000-02-23

My kids got this as a gift from friends in the U.S. and it is a hit both at home and amongst my kids' friends who keep borrowing it (much to my kids' dismay since they listen to it almost non-stop). The English speakers love the lyrics and the non-English speakers love the music! It is a favorite in our house...we love it all!

5 out of 5 stars My son and daughter love this CD! There is a video too!.......1999-11-24

Both of my children (boy 4 1/2, girl 1 1/2) love this music about trains - especially the dinosaur song. The CD has stood the test of time at our house. We first borrowed it from the library, and my son was constantly asking to get it again. After several renewals, I finally broke down and bought it. There is also a video called "I Love Toy Trains, Part 4" which is set to this entire collection. Both have been big hits at our house for over a year.

5 out of 5 stars The Beauty of the Male Voice.......2006-05-04

I was fortunate to hear The Male Choir of St. Petersburg perform at the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg, and was stunned by the power and beauty of their song. The director, aware that the deep, resonate voices struck a chord within each member of the audience, held the final note of each song until it echoed from the rafters. The songs are usually traditional Russian songs, but are not religious chants, as many people seem to expect - one song, called "O My Field" is an ode to a farmer's plot of ground. I recommend this album, a great opportunity to revel in the beauty of the male voice.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Couple of nice tunes, lyrics not so hot.......2004-12-03

After listening to the CD a number of times I find it has some value. I can't give it 5 start just because I find there is not as many 'GREAT' tunes there. My favorite ones: Come Along, Love has left your eye, Last time. One problem I find with this CD should be probably attributed to my expectations. I really wanted more mature lyrics then what is acutally there. After listening to artists like Tori Amos, Jewel (not just her pop stuff) and Dido (ok, maybe she is more pop then Tori) it is little hard to get used to more "fluffy" music. In her defence she is a new commer and I hope for growth and development of her own style in the next CD. Overall, the songs I find interesting do justify my choice to buy the CD.

4 out of 5 stars The sexiest woman alive!.......2003-08-06

There are several reasons to buy this CD, not the least of which is Titiyo's incredible singing, especially on the title cut, which, rightly, was a huge international hit. But I want to plug the "extended" version of "Come Along" if only because it includes a video of the title song that is the best argument I know in support of my assertion that Titiyo is the sexiest woman alive! I happened to be in Germany when this video came out, and I was certain I was witnessing the rebirth of pre-rhinoplasty Cher. The sun-drenched video, which appears to have been filmed in the Australian Outback, caught my eye, but it was Titiyo's sultry, bluesy mezzo that won my ear: I knew I was in the presence of a major talent. I later found out that she is from Sweden, not diesel country at all, and that her half-sister is Neneh Cherry. It IS a small world after all! So why not five stars? There are great musical moments on the album, in addition to the instant classic, "Come Along," but few of the other numbers rise to this level. "Hold Her Tight" and bonus-track "Josefin Dean" (which sounds like an outtake from the "Dusty in Memphis" sessions) are among my favorites. [Titiyo co-wrote this latter.] But buy it for the video, and then savor the tunes. The sight of Titiyo stretched out on a motorcycle is itself worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise.......2003-01-15

I was pleasantly surprised with this album. I heard "Come Along" on the Providence album and took a chance. Titiyo has a powerful voice and songs, which speak to the soul. Come Along is great as is 1989, Love Has Left Your Heart, My Heart Won and Right or Wrong. Powerful voice and lyrics - this is one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Titiyo Jah ushers in a new age of excellence !!!.......2002-11-23

Titiyo's "Come Along" album is a winner in every respect. Titiyo's powerful voice calls to us to join her in a land of enchanment and spiritualism. The songs are tight and uplifting, with lyrics that inspire thought and imagination. This one's going quadruple platinum!!!
"Come along" and ease your pain with Titiyo. The entire album is a wonderful journey into a realm of wonders.

5 out of 5 stars Tityo "Come Along".......2002-11-09

Tityo's "Come Along" is Amazing and Different than whats played on the Normal Radio Rotation, If you are not into the average voice I Recomend Tityo. I also recomend Johnny Lang, Fiona Apple, Torri Amos, Res, & The band Prior Life.

4 out of 5 stars Greek Energy!.......2005-07-30

Despina is a very successful pop diva. Her soft voice dashes through the mellower tunes (I believe it & C'est la vie), while it strikes like a lightning bolt on her dance numbers (Come along now & GIA), not withstanding her powerfull interpretation of traditional greek songs (Ola Odigoun Se Esena, Lathos Anthropos & my favorite, Deste Mou Ta Matia). Although she is no Anna Vissi, this album provides a nice mixture of different styles and it is very pleasant to the ear. It is great for a cocktail party as background music, but it is also very worth while taking the time to listen to it track by track.

2 out of 5 stars ***.......2005-05-08

THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE THAT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT GREEK MUSIC BUT RESPONDED TO "GIA" IS AMAZING. THAT SONG CAUGHT ON IN THE CLUBS AND RADIO IN AMERICA LIKE I NEVER EXPECTED. AND AS A GREEK AMERICAN THAT MAKES ME FEEL REALLY GOOD. BECAUSE GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC, NO MATTER WHERE IT'S FROM. THAT BEING SAID, I HAVE TO AGREE WITH ANOTHER REVIEWER...THIS COLLECTION OF SONGS WAS JUST THROWN TOGETHER FOR THE SAKE OF MAKING A QUICK BUCK. DESPINA VANDI IS ONE MY FAVORITE GREEK SINGERS. IS SHE THE BEST? NO. BUT SHE'S A GOOD ENTERTAINER WITH A HANDFUL OF GREAT SONGS. THE ENGLISH SONGS HERE ARE REHASHED AND RECYCLED. C'MON, HOW MANY TIMES DOES "OPA OPA" HAVE TO BE REMADE? NOTHING ON THIS RECORD WILL CAPTURE THE MAGIC THAT "GIA" DID, AS FAR AS THE USA MARKET IS CONCERNED. VANDI IS ALWAYS BEING ACCUSED OF RIPPING OFF ANNA VISSI.WELL, THIS IS ONE INSTANCE WHERE SHE SHOULD HAVE. "CALL ME" FROM ANNA VISSI IS THE #2 CLUB SONG IN AMERICA THIS WEEK. SORRY VANDI, TOO LITTLE TOO LATE....

5 out of 5 stars very good A+.......2005-05-01

The CD starts off with Despinas' Gia, and the music carries
through, with a solid performance to the last song.
I Believe It (Olo Lipis) is an amazing song .
This is modern music at its finest.
The biggest drawback is half the songs are in Greek .
The music is outstanding !!!

3 out of 5 stars What was she Thinking??.......2005-03-16

I love Vandi, but this "album" is bellow her normal ablitities. The album translated some of her biggest hits in Greece, with English lyrics that don't make sense. I think Fivos is trying to rhyme too much. She talks about the flavor of chewing gum, and wonder lady. It seems as if he was writing a song and just pick words that match, but don't flow together. If she is serious about an international career she should work with people that will make her sound amazing. She is a great singer in Greek, but the way she sings in English is a little annoying. I don't know maybe I was expecting something better from Vandi. The album combined translations of Greek hits, and some of her Greek hits. It seems as if the album was just thrown together. It's like we have a huge hit "Gia" and some other English songs, "Come Along Now" and "Opa Opa", lets make an international album. Vandi should be embarrassed that her name is on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Listening Experience - - A Historic Session !.......2000-12-08

This is Eddie Jefferson at his funkiest and hardest swinging.

I "rediscovered" this INCREDIBLE LP after a 14 year hiatus after a brief chat with Giacomo Gates, a great Eddie Jefferson influenced vocalist who's material can also be found at Amazon. I had stopped listening to it NOT because it wore out (fat chance !) but because I had converted a lot of tunes to tape and a lot of them were on the now out of print THERE I GO, THERE I GO Prestige compilation. Eventually the album got burried deep down in the stack and today, I was determined to relive it !

Release on the tail of his highly acclaimed "BODY AND SOUL" LP, Eddie was clearly energized by his newfound fame. Though he'd been in the game tap dancing and vocalizing on the side for almost thirty years by then, he spent the previous six in virtual obscurity working a day job... by the time Come Along With Me Came out, clearly he was in good spirits... and eager to embrace not only his roots in bop and swing, but the mergence of rock and soul in that fall of 1969... what you hear then is an all star session that at times swings hard (check out Yardbird Sweet, Dexter Digs In, When You're Smiling, and Its Only A Paper Moon, which he reworked as Come Along With Me) and at other times gets quite funky, from the gospelly Son of a Preacher Man, to his funky Soul Jazz renditions of Please Leave Me Alone and The Preacher... and of course, his mastery of ballads. Overall, this is an energizing listening experience lead by Eddie's brilliant and imaginative storytelling abilities as a vocalist and an all star ensemble including a whirling Charles McPherson on alto sax, Barry Harris on Piano, a screaming Bill Hardman on drumpet, Bill English on drums, and Gene Taylor on bass.

There is no question in my mind that while this album may not be as popular, its up there as one of the great Jazz recordings of all time and one of those sessions that may have been typical Autumn day for some, but in one studio atleast was a momentuos chapter in the annals of Modern Jazz. The studio was on fire... and Eddie swung hard. - - If you've ever been to a jam session in the community where patrons have been known to walk in in possession of their own tambourines... and everyone is up and dancing - - even to John Coltrane, be it on the bandstand or the juke box... this album will take you there ! ! !
