For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

Great Old-Time Mambo Orchestra.......2006-03-05

Wow, what a needed CD. I love the arrangement of the songs in the style of the mambo of the Palladium Ballroom. I especially liked the no. 7 song, Si Una Vez, for the great arrangement. The singing is great too. Another reviewer trashed it, which is unfortunate. These people are totally uknown and obviously do it for the sheer love of the music. I really wish I could see something like this in my area (Baton Rouge - New Orleans), but since my area is destroyed, nobody is coming here. Anyway, this recording is a blessing.

This Album sounds ok. A grammy nomination is kind of pushing it though. It sounds as if everyone was playing to something different. There is no "meshing" or blending going on. The voicings in the brass aren't the most pleasing to the ear and the phrasing isn't all that hot, but I guess it's kinda hard with so many horns. There is no drive present...No hard swing. The sound quality is the best thing this CD has to offer, thanx to the master engineer Jon Fausty. This CD sounds decent. It's better than some other stuff thats out there, but I wouldn't put it at the top of my list.

Some good, some bad.......2005-09-18

Mostly 70's/80's music with some real winners and some real losers, maybe more of the latter depending on your musical tastes. Most are name artists, but I find it hard to believe that these tracks were all "No. 2 Hits" as the title implies. No. 2 on which list, you might wonder.

Great selections by Peter & Gordon, The Hollies, Kenny Rogers, Blondie and others. But it's about one and a half CD's worth of good music padded out to three CD's. I found this at the local library and was glad I had not spent $20 on it. I recommend you buy this on sale.

Music for a party , among the first music I ever heard.......2005-11-22

It was through listening to Bill that I got the idea and understanding of what a rock and roll groove should be .
It was only later that I realised that Bill had his start in country or western swing bands . Both of these sorts of music show an honest simplicity that some people think shows a lack of ability .

They could not be more wrong .

The underlying constant clicking of the double bass strings driving the songs is still the sort of feeling any band that plays these songs cannot forget . It is a heartbeat and is connected to the feet .

These are songs for dancing and the fine remastering brings them to life again . The records sound exciting to begin with ,
due to the 'live' sound of the room in which they were recorded .

I feel unashamedly happy when listening to this compilation .
I hope others discover this man - he is as influential in his own way as Elvis .

Bill Haley came along with a rockin' song........2005-07-07

Bill Haley deserves some credit for being the first white man to play rock and roll. But a lot of the guys who followed him, like Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly, did it better. A lot of Haley's recording don't hold up that well today. Still, he was a pioneer, and some of his recordings do have charm. This is a collection of his tracks recorded between 1954 and 1956. There are some important tracks recorded before and after those dates that are missing, but this is a decent sampling of his work. Here is the track listing:

Outstanding Nesmith Collection.......2006-01-04

This is an outstanding collection of songs by Michael Nesmith. The sound quality of this CD is considerably better than a couple other of his "greatest hits" packages. Highly recommended for Nesmith fans, Monkees fans, and anyone who enjoys quality country folk/pop music.

OBSCURE TUNESMITH.......2003-06-01

This talented but obscure musician was a member of the Monkees and in the early seventies became a successful singer/songwriter. This collection includes his greatest hits plus other very memorable tracks. Silver Moon is a brilliant piece of country pop, Listen To The Band is very tuneful and Harmony Constant has an uplifting spiritual undertone. Most tracks, but especially I've Just Begun To Care, the poignant Keys To The Car, Joanne and I Fall To Pieces are out and out country, but others like Some Of Shelley's Blues and Nevada Fighter with its innovative drumming, have a rock vibe. Different Drum was a huge hit for Linda Ronstadt but his original version is great too. All of these songs are tuneful and Nesmith came up with some truly poetic lyrics. His is an original talent that made exceptional music deserving of more recognition.

Papa Nez At His Finest.......2003-01-14

Okay, its really not possible to critique a 'best of' collection the way one would a regular album release. But this is one collection that is truly deserving of the title "best".
Michael Nesmith may be forever remembered as the 'serious Monkee', but he was also the one Monkee who got down to some serious writing and recording. Several songs he recorded during his days as a Monkee were country-tinged, so this disc should come as no big revelation to anyone who is even mildly familiar with his output in the 'Pre-Fab Four'. Also, for Monkees fans, many of these tracks will be familiar, as Nez recorded many of them as a Monkee, though they may have not been officially released until decades later on Missing Links (outtakes, rarities) CD's. Tracks like Listen To the Band (which was released as a single with the Monkees), Some Of Shelly's Blues, Propinquity, The Crippled Lion, Little Red Rider and Nine Times Blue should ring bells for Monkees fans. The versions here are less 'pop' sounding in their production. Also the track Conversations was recorded as Carlisle Wheeling in the Monkees. That Monkees-era version is, in my opinion, superior to this version, as is the original version of Hollywood. But they are still great songs, no matter what Nez does with them.
Other standout tracks here include Silver Moon, Joanne, Different Drum (which he gave to Linda Rondstadt and the Stone Poneys), Nevada Fighter, Grand Ennui...I could go on and on.
Nesmith's sense of songcraft that he honed in the Monkees works well here, as the songs are to the point, unpretentious, yet have a certain artistic edge to them that set them apart from other country songs.
The only clunkers here include the inclusion of First National Rag, which seems pointless given CD technology, and a meandering rendition of Beyond the Blue Horizon (here mistakenly credited as a Nesmith original).
And speaking of mistakes -- I know this is an import from Belgium, but the time and effort (if you can call it that) put into the artwork and liner notes is pitiful. I have seen bootlegs with better care put into getting information correct. Aside from the previously mentioned credit for Beyond the Blue Horizon, there are also misspelled words (it's Two DIFFERENT Roads, not DEGGERENT) and graphic errors. As for the cover listing songs by The Guess Who, my CD actually lists songs by Nez, so that was a relief. But this poor quality control in the art department, as well as scant song info (it would be nice to have a booklet with Nez related info in it) is what keeps this collection from getting 5 stars.
Bottom line: great work from an underrated talent. This truly is the 'best country music never heard'. Higly recommended.

The Greatest Music Never Heard.......2002-03-03

I've always been a great fan of Nez and this is a great collection of his best work. For some strange reason, the song titles on the CD cover shown here lists songs that are not only NOT on the CD, but were never even recorded by Nez. They are songs by that great Canadian band, The Guess Who.
