Album Description

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet—79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

4 out of 5 stars Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

It is a very good cd but all i want is one song off of it ..

5 out of 5 stars A great contemprary country album.......2004-02-15

A fantastic collection of songs, worth having. In fact, this 1992 set of songs sounds like it could come out today. I bought it when it was new, pulled it out recently and was pleasantly surprised to see how well it has held up. Crystal's voals, as always, are superb. Her sweet-sultry honey-soaked voice is in top form. And it's nice to hear Crystal move beyond her usual set of love ballads she's done in the past (excellently, by the way) to the countrier, more story-oriented side of things. She doesn't often record songs with choruses like "If the Phone Doesn't Ring, It's Me," a nice mid-tempo ode to leaving heartbreak behind. "Three Good Reasons" is the catchy title track about a single mom learning to make it on her own; I've never heard Crystal sing a story like this and both she and the song really lift you up as it goes along. Of course, with Crystal there's got to be a searing ballad, and with "A Rose Between Two Thorns" she delivers a poignant song about divorce with an exquisite tear in her voice. I'll admit I'm a fan, but I think anyone with country leanings and a penchant for a skilled, beautiful voice will really enjoy these songs. Can't understand why this wasn't a huge comeback album for Crystal--it should have been.

Album Description

Sons of the Never Wrong present a different view of three part harmony on top of witty, whimsical original songs that spring from a tradition you swear you've heard, but you just don't know where or when. Comprised of Bruce Roper (vocals, guitar, accordian, banjo & keyboards), Nancy Walker (vocals, guitar and mandolin), and Sue Demel (vocals, guitar and percussion), the Sons weave a lyric and musical fabric "asking for nothing but the joy of playing, fingers picking, hands drumming and voices calling out faithfully." (Sue Demel). Featuring cover art by Nicholas Africano, Three Good Reasons is their debut CD.

Sitting in on this album are mandolinist Don Stiernberg, guitarist Robert Quine (known for his work with Matthew Sweet), Bassist Mark Edelstein, percussionists Michael and Mark Cameron, guitarists Kenny Schiff and Victor Sanders, and violinists Andrae Delousier and Andrew Bird. Yang Ying of the Beijing national orchestra plays a traditional 2-stringed bowed instrument called an ER-HU.

5 out of 5 stars Many good reasons!1.......2004-12-16

One cold morning, I was sitting sipping my coffe, waiting for the dark to go away so I could take my chain-saw and make my day out in the Norwegian back-woods. I put on a CD just arrived from the US, and started to read my morning paper. Then my ears started to perk up. Hey, hey, what's this!! The first cut was absolutely great, and so was the next and the next and.... I was utterly captivated. One of the best CD's I've ever heard, and not just two or three songs, no, the whole darned CD was good.Wellø to be sure, I played it again some days latter, 'cause sometimes the songs does not sound that nice in the cold light of day. But yes, it was even better, and now even(?) my wife plays it every day. Why?? Seldom have I heard such joy in singing. I think they must have had a field day when they recorded this CD, and this comes through very clearly. If you all want a hell of a good time, buy this CD. You will not regret it!!

5 out of 5 stars Happy Music.......2003-12-12

This is by far my favorite group of all time. They are fun, uplifting, and I have listened to this CD about a thousand times (maybe more), and never tire of it--I've owned it since 1995 and still listen to it today. I agree with an earlier reviewer. If you even like folk a little bit--SEE THEM LIVE. You won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars Great On Recordings, Better Still Live.......2000-09-13

Like the prior commentator, I first saw "Sons" in person, then got their recordings. The recordings are wonderful, but DO NOT miss a chance to see them live -- they're so engaging, exciting, uplifting, that you'll thank yourself for having gone.

In terms of their songwriting, I think these people have been developing the most creative acoustic music since Steve Goodman left us.

I don't know why more people haven't caught on yet, but I encourage all who like good folk/acoustic music to lend "Sons" an ear. And an eye!

5 out of 5 stars my favorite folk group!.......1998-12-14

i have been in love with sons ever since i saw them perform a couple years ago. i wish they had more CDs, but if your cd collection is without 3 good reasons, And consequence of speech, it is incomplete. this CD is a brilliant blend of whimsical, somewhat silly songs like "dead on the highway" and heartbreakingly beautiful ballads, " alone in the wake being my favorite."

you will be Hooked on sons, i promise!
