4 out of 5 stars Solid Collection of Bluegrass Gospel.......2004-11-10

There was a time when gospel music was a staple of both country and bluegrass music. Live concerts would feature at least one set devoted entirely to gospel music. This 65-minute disk features twenty-four tracks from the CMH stable of artists. Several of these songs were written by the artist like Merle Travis' "I Am a Pilgrim," Don Reno's "I'm Using My Bible for a Roadmap" and "The Lord's Last Supper," and Eddie Adcock's "Living Waters." [For years, Adcock was the banjo player for the Country Gentlemen. Here he performs with his wife Martha.] Most of the songs are covered by artists who did not make the songs famous, but yet still offer a heart-felt performance like Carl Story's rendition of Hank Williams' "I Saw the Light" and Jim and Jesse McReynolds' version of "Great Speckled Bird," a song more closely identified with Roy Acuff. All told, this is a solid collection of bluegrass gospel played and sung with conviction. Hallelujah! RECOMMENDED

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2003-02-01

This sounds more like a "country gospel quartet" collection. For a much better bluegrass collection, try Rounder's "25 Years of Bluegrass." Much better gospel bluegrass CD's are Ricky Skaggs' "Soldier of the Cross" and The Isaacs' "Increase My Faith" or "Pieces of Our Past."

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but "Essential"?.......2003-01-05

This is an enjoyable listen, but "essential" seems a bit much, given that it lacks some of the greatest bluegrass gospel musicians, folks like the Country Gentlemen, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Stanley Bros, Bill Monroe, and Ricky Skaggs (esp. his earlier albums). Buy it, enjoy it, but move beyond the "essential" if you want the best.

5 out of 5 stars Bluegrass From Heaven.......2000-03-19

To me, gospel music should be simple and heartfelt. This CD has certainly accomplished that! I couldn't wait to play it on my computer; now it travels with me in my van. These songs take me back to a simpler time when the message didn't get masked by the music. The sincerity of the artists comes through their voices and their fingers in such a way that I really get lifted by their talents. For any Christian and/or bluegrass lover, this album is a must! I would love to find more like this one ... I keep huntin'...

5 out of 5 stars Best Bluegrass.......2007-05-11

The Osborne Brothers!!?? What can one say about them. They are one of the very best of the Bluegrass groups. I've been listening to them for many years. Bobby has that beautiful voice and picks that mandolin like a master. And Sonny - a master on the banjo. I'm so glad I have their music in my library. They can't last forever, but their music will. (I mean, I'm about their age, and so I know.)

5 out of 5 stars The Osborne Brothers are one of the best. .......2006-04-23

I only listen to the older singers 50's-70's I hate today's country music. I love the legends from the era I mentioned above and I never listen to the radio anymore. So when I received this cd I was very pleased. They are the best at what they do and if you are a fan of this group or your like me who hates today's music you'll love this cd. I recommend this cd and check out their other albums. If you have time check out the Stanley Brothers,Jimmy Martin,Grandpa Jones,Flatt & Scruggs, and Stringbean. They are all my favorites you won't be disappointed trust me. Long Live bluegrass and tradition.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Solid Compilation.......2006-06-24

This compilation concentrates on Cline's classy early 1960's recordings, which consist of two great original albums, a string of fine singles and a long list of outtakes that werte eventually released on posthumous albums released after her tragic aircrash death in 1963.

From "Showcase" (1962) 3 songs are included. Her big ballad and hit "Crazy" written Willie Nelson along with another fine ballad "I Love You so Much" and one of the few pure country tacks "San Antonio Rose".

Strange that some of the strongest material from that album has been left out ( "I Fall to Pieces", "Seven Lonely Days" or "The Wayward Wind" )

The last album released in her own lifetime "Sentimentally Yours" is better represented with great ballads like "She's Got You", "Your Cheating Heart" , "Lonely Street" and "I Can't Help it". Also from that album are sheer pop-songs like "Heartaches" and "Anytime".

Several fine recording were released posthumously on albums like "A Tribute to Patsy Cline", "In Memoriam" and "A Portrait". Among those her version of the old standard "Love Letters in the Sand" deserves to be brought out. "Why Can't He Be You" is also great.

Only early song is her breakthrough country hit "Walking After Midnight"

All in all a solid compilation though leaving out quite a few great songs like "You Belong to Me" and "That's How a Heartache Begins" - but you can't have them all on a single CD anyway, so . . .

    3 out of 5 stars Essential-not exactly.......2003-06-10

There is some enjoyable music on this collection, but I was suprised at some of the selections. Some of the songs on this collection are not bluegrass. For example, track 12 on CD 3 "Love Gonna Get You" sounds more like sixties country rock/boogie. How it ever made it on this collection of essential bluegrass is beyond me. Unfortunately, it is not the only song on this collection that is not bluegrass.

    2 out of 5 stars Essential?--Not Hardly.......2002-08-16

I bought this CD hoping to find at least a few good tunes, ones I didn't recognize from the track listing, but I was disappointed. There are great artists on this 4 CD set, and the technical sound quality is great, but there are no undiscovered gems, to my musical taste anyway. Calling them "64 Legendary performances" is textbook marketing hyperbole, as any knowledgeable bluegrass fan can tell by looking at the track listings. I only ripped a couple tracks onto my MusicMatch jukebox, just to avoid it being a complete waste. Buy Flatt & Scruggs "Carnegie Hall Concert". If you don't like that, you will never like bluegrass.
