Historic Ragtime.......2001-03-31

Charles Thompson was a contemporary of Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson, and was one of the leading figues of the second generation of St. Louis ragtime pianists.

This album, made up of live recordings from the early 1960s, finds Thompson in reasonable form, playing some of his best known pieces plus a few standards. His powers had declined a little from his 1948-49 American Music recordings, but he was still able to play in an entertaining fashion. Many of the performances are rather short, but these are historic recordings by a little known but important figue in ragtime.

Delmark is to be commended for this release: let's hope they re-issue the rest of the Euphonic back catalogue. Anyone interested in ragtime and early jazz should consider buying this CD.

Best known for her rendition of "The Tennessee Waltz," Patti Page was country when country wasn't cool. In the '50s, at the height of her fame, she colored her pop songs with country phrasing, and let the song, not the singer, be the star. On her Brand New Tennessee Waltz, featuring guests Trisha Yearwood, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Kathy Mattea, and Suzy Bogguss, Page shows she doesn't just still have the chops--she's got the Oklahoma soul she was born with. Producer Jon Vezner, Mattea's husband, gives her mostly covers, and if he errs in letting her reprise his too-sweet "Where've You Been," a signature song for Mattea, he correctly lets her make "Till I Get It Right" as bluesy as she wants. At times, such as on the jazzy "I Was Just Thinking," Page may remind you of Rosemary Clooney, infusing every word with meaning and experience. But it's her rendition of "New Way Out" that'll really get you. With Yearwood and Harris behind her, they reach a kind of vibrational nirvana. Don't believe it? Patti was born in Oklahoma so it is fitting that her final album should be filled with country music although the music here is very different from the music that Patti was raised on.

We all thought Patti's recording career was long past when she surprised us all with this fine album. With a selection of songs carefully chosen to fit within the vocal limitations of a singer in her seventies and a stellar cast of backing singers (Trisha Yearwood, Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Suzy Bogguss, Kathy Mattea and Jesse Winchester among them), this is far better than most singers of that age could ever hope to record.

The title of the album is very clever, as the album opens with Brand new Tennessee waltz (a cover of a Jesse Winchester song from 1969) and closes with a brand new version of Tennessee waltz (Patti's biggest hit, which was about fifty years old when this album was released). In between these two songs, there are several fine covers including Till I get it right (Tammy Wynette), I believe in you (Don Williams), I was just thinking (Lari White), Could I have this dance (Anne Murray) and Where've you been (Kathy Mattea). Paper dolls appears to be an original song while Hope chest may also be original.

This is a brilliant album that should please Patti's fans and quite a few other people too.

A fine recording for country and western fans........2001-05-18

Patti Page is in excellent voice. She has no vocal shortcomings to apologize for. The main thing buyers need to be aware of is that this recording is strictly in a "country and western" style ---- lot's of country fiddles and steel guitars. If you like this approach, you will enjoy this album. If your tastes run in other directions, you may want to think matters over.

At an age when you might expect her to be enjoying that ole rockin' chair, Patti Page offers an album that redefines her talent. Always an impeccable singer with a beautiful voice who could effectly handle any kind of material, she has now added a new depth of understanding, reflection and wisdom to her singing. Her voice is not the same as it once was. It's deeper and fuller and edgy whereas it once was silk and satin. But that's right in line with what she has evolved into as an artist. She's moved on from being the perfect pop hit maker to being an artist of uncommon intelligence and insight. This is also a great country album, not a pop album masquerading as country. Patti began as a country singer and you can't invent that talent--you either have it for real or you're faking it. She has it for real. Production values, orchestrations and accompaniment here are first-rate, totally contemporary and not at all nostalgic.

Patti Page has topped herself with this release. BRAND NEW TENNESSEE WALTZ premiered at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on May 7, 2000. Patti was greeted with standing ovations....every song on the CD was included in the show. Many in the audience had never heard Patti in concert but appreciated every song you will hear on this CD. The selection is tops, the arrangments and production are millenium quality. Patti's readings of NEW WAY OUT, I WAS JUST THINKING, PAPER DOLLS, I BELIEVE IN YOU and TIL I GET IT RIGHT are immaculate. All are single material. In fact I tried to choose a single (being a former DJ) and couldn't come up with less than these 5 choices. Patti's treatment of the former Tammy Wynette hit, TIL I GET IT RIGHT is done in a blues style with top notch guitar work to add to the smoky nightclub flavor. NEW WAY OUT has the added charm of background vowels by some of Nashville's finest ladies, Trisha Yearwood and Emmy Lou Harris who are also heard singing harmony on other selections. Patti has a new Adult Contemporary classic in her recording of I WAS JUST THINKING. This song sounds as if it would be a hit parade favorite in any decade. PAPER DOLLS appears to have been written especially for Patti. Only an artist who has lived the decades can bring meaning to the lyric about a woman who after 50 years or so has finally come to accept herself as she is. The only song on this CD which was formerly recorded by Patti is the TENNESSEE WALTZ which she can rightly call her song. The arrangement is country and producer John Vezner says he was amazed that Patti sings it in the same key as 50 years ago. Give this a listen today.

Tops Even the Grammy Winning LIVE AT CARNEGIE HALL!!!.......2001-01-19

Patti Page previewed this CD in its entirety at the Ryman in Nashville in May when it was originally released on her own label. She received standing ovations and the quality of this CD is the reason. Not only are the selections well chosen but the entire production is Millenium Gold. When I listened to this CD the first time I tried to choose the best selection for a single. I couldn't choose just one. Patti's reading of PAPER DOLLS is magnificent. Only someone who's lived the life can give life to the song. Karen Brooks' NEW WAY OUT is perfectly arranged and perfectly sung by Patti. It's great to hear I BELIEVE IN LOVE. The backing vocals of Kathy Mattea, Trisha Yearwood, Emmy Lou Harris and the rest make this a special treat. Listening to this CD reveals a well planned selection of songs, arrangements which bring out the best in each song and the best it Patti. Friends who heard the CD playing in my office had no idea who Patti Page was, but they wanted the CD.

Patti has recorded for 53 years but nothing is better than this. Some are equal but none better. You don't have to be a fan of country to appreciate this collection.

It Was So Long Ago.......2004-11-10

I was little but I still remember "Tragic Romance", "Hangman's Boogie" and "Signed, Sealed and Delivered" (not to be confused with the later Stevie Wonder hit) but I still go to my twenty-dollar reissued 45 vinyl for "Candy Kisses" by George Morgan as it was GM's signature song. And "Tennessee Waltz" is Patti Page's. Sorry, Cope. There weren't all that many "superstars" when Copas was recording but he had a steady issue of fundamental country music done in a way that touched people. Those songs as I recall them are right here and I recommend this compilation. The last song I remember by this man is "Goodbye Kisses", a heartfelt tune, from about a year before his plane crash which also took his contemporary Hawkshaw Hawkins and country legend Patsy Cline. He is well worth remembering.
