About the Artist
Mary and Mars is the common vision of three innovative musicians. The band's music is most easily described as bluegrass, but their influences are vast. Since getting together in March of 2002, they've proven themselves as a consummate live act. As can be seen at their Friday residency at the world-famous Cowgirl Hall of Fame, the band's enthusiasm and energy are contagious, converting even those who claim they "never dance" or "don't like bluegrass" into true believers.

The combination of Sharon's virtuosic mandolin playing, Ben's lightning-fast picking and Josh's funky, driving bass lines is like a runaway locomotive and everybody wants to get on. Their soulful three-part harmonies take it the next level. And wait until you see Sharon and Josh trade instruments. Their live sets showcase their strong arsenal of original material and also feature everything from 1800's murder ballads to up-tempo Motown tunes, bluegrass standards to ironic takes on '80's rock tunes.

5 out of 5 stars I love the music on this disc.......2007-07-14

Les Paul and his wife Mary Ford are legends in jazz music. My favorite track on this disc is "I'm Sitting On The Top Of The World." Nobody could play the electric guitar as masterfully as Les Paul. Mary Paul's voice is so sensual on the track "I'm A Fool To Care." I love this track. "Tennessee Waltz" and "Vaya Con Dios" are classic romantic tunes. These tracks makes me think of someone special. "In The Mood" is another excellent song that puts me in a great mood. "Bye Bye Blues" is an uptempo track that stands out as one of the best here. "I Really Don't Want To Know" is a pretty song. I love the tenderness in Mary Ford's voice on this track. This disc is filled with great music.

This must be one of the best CD's available letting new comers to LP&MF hear some of their best tracks from the 50's and they have not dated since then. Unfortunately CAPITAL in their wisdom have omitted others which should have been included. I can name but a few:- La Rossita - Mac the Knife - Three little words - Magic Melody - Hold me in your arms - Old Mexico - What is this thing called love - Walking & Whistling Blues - I'm Jealous - By the light of the Silvery Moon - Chicken Reel. and I'm sure there's more. So it looks like we'll have to wait till Les reaches his 100th Birthday before we see a Box Set.
I am tempted to wait - that's if I can manage to live as long as Les. He's doing great, and I hope he will still be playing when he reaches 100! Well done mate!

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2005-11-02

The recordings sound very modern. You can't tell this wasn't recorded yesterday; just listen to the samples. Les Paul had an inimitable guitar style. The man was the master, and teamed with the easy, lilting style of Mary Ford AKA (Iris) Colleen Summers (who started out in Western music), how could they not score? This music, while a product of its era, is timeless. This is perfection. This is the stuff dreams are made of. I usually review Classical music, but what can be more classic than this?

I only regret that a box set is not available, since I love everything that Les Paul and Mary Ford ever waxed. A particular favorite of mine that is missing is the Hawaiian love song, "The Moon of Manakoora". It is every bit as beautiful as the version recorded by Alfred Ahola Apaka, the crooning voice of Hawaii, and is recorded better. There are other notable omissions that I won't tire you with here, but this is the best set available until a box set is released. Absolutely wonderful music making. Curl up to the fire and warm with it; You'll love how it gets you in the mood.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits? YESSSSSSSSSSSS.......2007-04-16

Perhaps at the time, these were considered their greatest hits. I've had my LP and CD for a very long time. I can't even remember. I love it. She was like an angel singing with herself. They seemed to adore one another on the TV show. She - so beautiful - and he - just beaming at her.
Maybe it's time to do another greatest hits and call it "More Greatest Hits". Other singers do it. And maybe all of us didn't agree with their first "greatest hit". Hey, you guys out there who do these kinds of things, what's taken so long?

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2007-02-09

Every fan of Guitar music will appreciate this Album.
Les Paul is not only a great Guitarist he is an inventor of modern recording technology.
Dual track recording and his use of up to eight tracks made him an music industry icon.
Mary Ford's strong clear voice makes this duo complete.
A great Album!

2 out of 5 stars Some Glaring Omissions!.......2005-08-06

I'm a huge fan of Les Paul and after reviewing the track list on this CD, I don't see how anyone in their right mind could call it an "all time greatest hits" collection.

While tracks such as "Mockin' Bird Hill", "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise", and "Vaya Con Dios" among the duo's best loved and best known songs, I find the omission of "How High the Moon", one the their biggest hits, to be unforgiveable. Equally astonishing is why "Dry My Tears", the theme song of Les & Mary's 50s radio show, and "Cryin'", arguably the best song Mary Ford has ever sung, were excluded. I would much rather have had those tracks included in the disc than the cover version of Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz", and the ersatz "Meet Mr. Callaghan". It's also hard to understand why the only Les Paul solo instrumental track on this disc is "Bye Bye Blues". "Lover", the song that propelled Les into the spotlight, and "Nola", a song that enjoyed worldwide popularity, were inexplicably left out.

While this is a decent collection of the work of Les Paul and Mary Ford, it is definitely NOT their all time greatest hits. The record label ought to be sued for false advertising.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing!.......2004-12-31

I've just discovered this pair, and I'm so sorry I haven't heard them until now. Being a jazz vocalist, I'm always looking for challenging material. I have a few CDs in this genre, but the styling, and caliber of the musicians puts my other CDs to shame. I suspect k.d. lang has borrowed styling from the likes of Mary Ford, as their voices seem to lilt in the same fashion. Les Paul's ability makes me wonder if there are more than two or three guitars playing simultaneously. Many of these cuts are very subtle in their exhibition of complicated material. For those so inclined to listen, it's an auditory adventure.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-25

I just received this in the mail; had ordered it
specifically for the tracks "Josephine" and "Little
Rock Getaway" which, among other titles, were in my
late dad's record collection. "Walkin' and Whistlin'
Blues" I had heard on an album about 20 years ago.
Talk about memories.

What's interesting about this collection, as other
reviewers have noted, is that it contains mostly
Les Paul instrumentals--not quite so much Mary Ford
(curiously, "Jealous" has been included, which was
not one of their hits, but was on the flip-side of
one of their better-known tracks--possibly "How High
The Moon", but I'm not sure). For those of you who
want more of Mary's vocals, I recommened that you bypass
this CD and get "The best of the Capitol masters--90th
birthday edition"(I have a previously-releaesd version
of this CD, which only contains the tracks from "Lover"
to "Hummingbird", plus some of the funniest liner notes
from Les himself that I've ever read! I don't know if
the liner notes were retained). I believe another reviewer
wrote about the sound quality. Personally, I believe
"Josephine" sounds EXACTLY as it did on my dad's 45.
Preserving artistic integrity is usually the goal when
reissuing analog-recorded music, and EMI/Capitol has
done a fabulous job here in my opinion. It's also noteworthy
that, with the exception of "The Kangaroo" and "Mandolino",
this CD contains all of Les's HIT instrumentals, plus other
good tunes, like his take on Duke Ellington's "Caravan", an
interesting version of "The Man On The Flying Trapeze", etc.
Many of his instrumentals were on flip-sides of the vocal
records with Mary. And how Les could play that guitar, not
to mention the overdubbing which STILL sounds state-of-the-
art to me! Thank you, Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars One of My favorites.......2007-02-09

This is the Album for Les Paul And Mary Ford Fans.
Brilliant guitar solos and amazing harmony vocals.
Thirty songs each unique to the Les Paul and Mary Ford style.
One of my favorite albums.

5 out of 5 stars Really takes me back!.......2005-10-07

I loved their music as a kid and I still love it. True that a little more singing from Mary would be good, but almost all the best is there now. Considering how many songs they both did, you can't expect to have it all on one CD. And yes, Waiting For The Sunrise and How High The Moon are their 2 all-time greatest and still beautiful to listen to. The jazz guitar is amazing. Les WAS a jazz guitarist, so if you don't like listening to superb guitar work, then I guess you wouldn't like this recording. For those of us who "remember when", it's THEM, and no doubt of it.

4 out of 5 stars For those who admire jazz.......2005-04-01

I bought this CD mainly because I have enjoyed another collection CD, "16 Most Requested Songs (1958-1961)". But this collection left me a bit rather frustrated. True, there are 30 fantastic tracks on this CD covering the "golden" era of Les Paul and Mary Ford (1949-1955). Yet it means the quality of the remastered tracks is unsteady and stylistically it appeals to jazz listeners, rather than pop. But mostly I was disappointed because of these 30 tracks only 9 contain Mary's vocal. Also there's no information given on the tracks or anything.

If you admire the jazz side of Les Paul, then you would enjoy it very much. But I'm going to look for something more pop-orientated and with more vocal contribution from Mary, maybe more of their Columbia period (1957-1963).

5 out of 5 stars NOT disapointing..........2004-03-14

If you are a looser, maybe you'd find thsi dissapointing. If you are smart and swingin' you will ove this 30 song compilation of ORIGINAL recordings!!! This is swingin' hillbilly jazz!!! If you like rockabilly you should be able to appreciate this.

Album Description

One of the most enduring acts in American music, Peter Paul And Mary both defined and transcended the 1960s folk revival. The trio's passionate commitment to peace and social justice made them the conscience of an era as they soulfully communicated political concerns through music in an unprecedented way. At the same time that they reached millions with their social message, they acheived phenomenal mass popularity.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for country song lovers.......2007-07-05

Songs are of high standard. However, the quality of the CD is substandard to the ears of an audiophile fan. Background of the recordings has a bit of noise, not absolutely clear. Overall, a good CD for a sunny day.

4 out of 5 stars Fab Folk Trio's Best.......2007-06-20

You know you're gettin' real old when you have a conversation with 20-something (or even 30-something) friend and you mention Peter, Paul & Mary and the person just gives you a blank stare. I got to thinking about the Fab Folk Trio because the political climate is...well, let's just say--unfortunate (with eerily similiar 1960's overtones.) I also got to thinking about Peter Yarrow's song "The Great Mandala" (on this CD.) Trouble was, for some reason I thought Richie Havens wrote it & that P, P & M were chorus backup--so I kept looking for the original and for lyrics with all the wrong information (yes, sometimes I am prone to air-headedness.) Once again, Amazon comes to the rescue in the end. In fact, I'm beginning to feel like a walking billboard for Amazon--hint, hint--any comps gladly accepted.

Anyway, I held back a star just because there were a couple of songs omitted, such as the trios' haunting rendition of "Polly Vaughn" that I would really have like to have seen included. Oh well, I've been told 'you can't have everything." How 'bout 4 and 1/2 stars?

Hearing "The Great Mandala" again made the search well worth while. It is one of Peter, Paul & Mary's most dramatic & uncompromising hits.

Peace.

This is one of the best folk groups in our country. The best in the world although, goes to an Australian group that did everything better than Peter, Paul, and Mary. The Seekers.

I remember listening to PP&M in 74-75. The songs had a magic quality to them, and they are still good. Time hasn't dimmed their quality much.

In recent years, Mary Chapin Carpenter--once among the most promising stars of the folkie infiltration of Nashville ("Down at the Twist and Shout," "I Feel Lucky")--abandoned all desire to dot the country music charts. Free of that ill-fitting yoke she returned to being what she really was all along: A literate acoustic singer-songwriter. In 2004, she released a tour de force, Between Here and Gone, which combined affecting social commentary on the events of 9/11 with personal meditations on her changed life as a married woman living in rural Virginia. The Calling picks up where that album left off, using the same co-producer, pianist Matt Rollings, and core musicians, including John Jennings, who helped Carpenter shape her sonic landscape some 20 years ago. If the new album goes farther in advocating a political conscience--"On with the Song" takes jabs at the jingoistic rubes who dissed the Dixie Chicks, while "Why Shouldn't We" insists we'll have worthy heroes in office again one day--it largely invokes the same quiet, warm, and conversational tone as its predecessor. On the whisper-soft "Twilight," which frames a perfect, peaceful evening with a nearly spiritual grace, a listener might easily imagine himself chatting with the artist about long-held secrets and shared experiences, the Blue Ridge Mountains looming in the background. That is part of Carpenter's gift--connecting with her audience's shadow self, using her deeply nuanced alto to fill even the simplest words with profound knowing. As a pure craftsman, however, she ranks with the giants of past generations in capturing the small, bruised hearts seemingly lost in the chaos of a catastrophic event. "Houston," one such song here, recalls Woody Guthrie's great "Deportee" in its power and the pathos of the Hurricane Katrina victims who were forced to evacuate their homes, leaving everything behind but fear and hope. "Mama's got her baby/Sleeping in a grocery cart," it begins, at once setting up a picture of wrenching desperation. Carpenter, no stranger to blue moods herself, knows how tough it is to emerge from a dark period of pained restlessness to find one's very self again. The album's soothing closer, "Bright Morning Star," like much of the record as a whole, offers a beacon of light and safe harbor for those shipwrecked on life's rocky shores. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

As a songwriter and performer, Mary Chapin Carpenter has long since transcended the traditional notions of genre and style, finding widespread acclaim for her poetic, elegantly - observed compositions. The Calling, her first release for Zoë/Rounder, is the most topical album she's made in her twenty-year career. While it unequivocally addresses issues both public and political - from the after-effects of Hurricane Katrina to religious zealotry to the trial-by-radio of the Dixie Chicks -- there is also something deeply personal about this extraordinary collection of songs. The album is a powerful, provocative meditation on the mysteries of fate and circumstance, which mingles timeless questions with contemporary issues. Introspective, defiant and deeply resonant, The Calling is a profound set from one of modern songwriting's most distinctive voices.

Featuring "It Must Have Happened," "We're All Right," and "On with the Song."

5 out of 5 stars Queen of sensation.......2007-06-27

This album is so good words cannot express how this dear lady sings (she is a life saver).

5 out of 5 stars A song of hope.......2007-06-27

I heard her song Why Shouldn't We on local independant radio and it knocked me over. An inclusive song of hope for the young and old, Why shouldn't we believe in things that give us hope, why shouldn't we. Her other songs are lovely also I listened to it in my car over and over again for weeks. I still love it.

5 out of 5 stars BEST TRUE FOLK SONGS--the calling.......2007-06-06

I have been a MCC fan for some time. I have all her cd's. The calling has excellent music and is equal or better than Stones in the Road. These songs have political and personal messages which move one to think. The music is awesome and the tunes stick in your brain for some time. I listen to the cd when I work out and find myself humming or singing aloud. Again, Mary has created an album for our times with lyrics and music of the highest quality.

Product Description

GREY GARDENS proclaimed the #1 Show of the Year by Time Magazine is preserved here in its Original Broadway Cast Recording. The show had been previously recorded following its off-Broadway premiere in the spring of 2006 (and its cast album released by PS Classics in August of 2006), but this new recording features the new songs and new cast members that were added for its Broadway transfer last fall. The new GREY GARDENS opened on Broadway on November 2, 2006, to rave reviews, led by Ben Brantley in The New York Times, who called it an experience no passionate theatergoer should miss! Starring Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole and Tony Award nominee Mary Louise Wilson, it subsequently appeared on over 25 Best of 2006 lists, including #1 Show of the Year (Time), Best Musical of the Year (USA Today, Entertainment Weekly) and Performance of the Year (The New York Times, New York) for Ms. Ebersole. In addition to the new songs and new performances, this Original Broadway Cast Recording also features an all-new 32-page full-color booklet complete with lyrics and Broadway production photos.

Based on the Maysles brothers' cult 1975 documentary of the same name, this musical is an endearing—-and sometimes genuinely heartwrenching—-oddity propelled by Christine Ebersole's exceptional, for-the-history-books performance. The movie followed the kooky duo of Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Little Edie Beale, as they lived with their 52 cats in a derelict East Hampton mansion. The show's first act, set in 1941, is a prologue of sorts, while the second act, set in 1973, follows the movie closely. Ebersole plays Edith in Act I (which she concludes in dazzling manner with "Will You?") and Little Edie in Act II (when Mary Louise Wilson comes in to play the mother). And while Wilson is superb, this is Ebersole's show. Technically, she is flawless—-just listen to the way she changes her voice between the acts—-but she also makes Little Edie a poignant eccentric, a lost soul stuck in a world of deluded, decaying grandeur. It all peaks in the poignant "Around the World," the show's best song and an Ebersole tour de force. Note that this recording documents the Off-Broadway production; the show transferred to Broadway in the fall of 2006 with a slightly altered first act. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars The Broadway musical lives on.......2007-07-17

The soundtrack of Grey Gardens is modern, yet echoes of a Broadway heritage are present. Some parts reminded me of Sondheim and the lyrics were very clever. For one who has no chance of seeing the show, this is the next best thing and after a few playings, I can already recall the tunes and lyrics. I haven't seen the documentary upon which it is based but am an avid Kennedy-Bouvier fan. I was expecting a dark almost despairing collection of songs but was pleasantly surprised at how much light and shade is in it. What a shame it is closing so soon. I guess it doesn't have enough helicopters on stage to sustain it but I am sure it will be revived when people become aware of what an important addition it is. The characters come alive on this recording and you can almost hear them acting. A very authentic and haunting soundtrack, highly recommended to any lover of Broadway musicals.

5 out of 5 stars Sensational Musical at a time when Musicals are suffering.......2007-07-14

I saw Grey Gardens in New York last month without knowing much about it and the Documentary it is based on. By the end of the show with the audience on their feet screeming and cheering the cast lead by Christine Ebersole who plays 2 roles in the show, I became an instant fan.
The recording is one you all need to hear as it has a booklet with great pictures and all the words but the songs are the type you remember as soon as you hear them. Unfortunately I heard that the show comes to an end at the end of July so the only way you can hear this amazing cast will be by buying this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Savoring the cake I had .......2007-07-14

What a wonder! This cast recording of "Grey Gardens" makes each listening a recollection in tranquillity of the theater experience which becomes deeper and more enlightening. Christine Ebersole's dual roles as mother Edith Beale and Little Edie, daughter, together with Mary Louise Wilson's as the older Edith Beale spiral harmonically between love, competitiveness, shared loneliness and tragic interdependency. The cast recording immortalizes so many nuances of the musical characterizations with lyics and music that put one in mind of the flint and spirit and loneliness of Emily Dickinson's poetry. If you loved and admired the performances, you will treasure this cast recording. ( Grey Gardens - A New Musical (2006 Original Broadway Cast)

1 out of 5 stars I want to take my ears off now.......2007-06-29

Grey Gardens got good reviews? I honestly don't know why everyone is raving. I have listened to it a few times now and I don't get it. Well I get it, what it's about and what is going on but I don't get why people like it. The music kind of reminds me of Annie, but worse. Don't get me wrong, I like Annie, but it's...Annie.

You might tell me its one of those shows you have to see on stage, but if I don't even like the music why would I even want to sit through it? Please. I can't stand this cast recording the only good thing about it is Christine Ebersole.

They could have done SO much better. I get what they tried to do and I see where they could have improved. I've turned off the music now and have left it for another day, maybe on a day when I can't hear properly.

5 out of 5 stars Isn't she amazing!.......2007-06-28

I mean, can you believe her? I mean, Christine, not Edie. Well, Edie, too. And her mom. But then Christine is both of them, isn't she. I mean...

Mary Poppins may be one of the most beloved film musicals of all time, but it took 30 long years for it to transfer to the stage. This recording of the original London cast shows the wait was worthwhile though. The new version mixes in elements from both the original books by P.L. Travers (which she started publishing in 1934) and the Disney movie starring Julie Andrews, from 1964. (Mary seems to take 30 years to do anything.) Most of the original songs by brothers Richard and Robert Sherman (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) are present--Mary Poppins is so associated with "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," "A Spoonful of Sugar," and "Chim Chim Cher-ee," her Oscar-winning duet with Bert, that starting from scratch would have been unthinkable. But then George Stiles and Anthony Drewe came in and dusted off some of these songs, and wrote entirely new numbers as well. Miraculous, these are wonderful and blend in seamlessly with the 1960s tunes, thanks in no small to William David Brohn's lovely orchestrations. As the titular super-nanny, Laura Michelle Kelly is so warm and scrumptious that she might as well be referring to herself when she sings "I'm practically perfect in every way." The rest of the cast is equally adept, making this Mary Poppins sweet but not treacly, and the rare show to upstage its source. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Great Memories.......2007-07-13

Good music ... great memories of when I was younger. Julie Andrew is missed.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible show!.......2007-06-17

I saw it in London, and there are literally only 2 good things about it: Burt walking upside down, and a few new (darker) additions from the original book.

Nearly all the original charm and SONGS from the Walt Disney film are missing. The new additional songs are DREADFUL and were not written by the Sherman Brothers (They weren't allowed to write new songs for this due to the miserable old broad author hating the film and having on her deathbed the proviso that Shermans were not to have anything to do with a stage version)

What a waste.

5 out of 5 stars The return of Mary Poppins.......2007-04-12

Different from the movie, this version develops the characters somewhat more deeply. I especially like the depth of personality shown in Mrs. Banks.

4 out of 5 stars Loved it, loved it........2007-03-09

Like just about every other little girl who was alive in the sixties, Mary Poppins was a favorite. I had heard about the new play from a friend in New York who had just seen it and loved it, and so I got this sound track. I have it on my Ipod and listen to it all the time. My grown daughters love it also. It is a great addition to my CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!.......2007-02-14

The Broadway version is even better than the movie version! Definitely buy this CD.

Winner of five Oscars (including two for Richard and Robert Sherman's memorable slate of songs), Disney's 1964 adaptation of British author P.L. Travers' beloved children's tales melded live action, animation and music more successfully than any film before or since. Containing the most complete version of the Sherman Brothers' score and a wealth of previously unavailable behind-the-scenes treasures, this double-disc, 40th anniversary soundtrack edition becomes the ultimate musical tribute to the beloved family masterpiece. The Sherman's memorable songs are showcased here in a more comprehensive musical context than ever before; indeed, a number of the expanded or previously unreleased pieces of the Irwin Kostal-arranged underscore now included were truncated in editing the film itself. The generous bonus disc contains the set's greatest historical treasure: a 40+ minute pre-production story meeting between the Shermans, gag writer Don DaGradi and author Travers herself. Also included is a lengthy 1964 audio documentary featuring the Shermans and stars Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, an audio montage of the songwriting team reminiscing and playing their original demos for the project and an illustrated 40-page companion booklet containing a history of the project as well as complete song lyrics. -- Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Practically Perfect..........2007-06-20

A really wonderful re-issue of this classic score, made even richer by the inclusion of much of the orchestral score. My only quibble, rather small, is that the expanded overture heard on the original lp has not been included. That overture goes on a little longer than the film version and is quite beautiful. Has this version been on any cd issue of the soundtrack? As I said, small point, and this cd belongs in every soundtrack collection - it's just great - and far better than the current stage version.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-05-13

This CD is not of the caliber of a Sound of Music and West Side Story as far sheer volume of great songs go; most songs are good and classics.

This CD is one to have in your collection of musicals.

5 out of 5 stars Loved by young and old...I mean older :) .......2007-03-15

I wish I would have gotten this a long time ago. I never knew soundtracks could be so much fun! My whole family enjoys singing along with these songs and visioning the movie while we sing. Even my husband enjoys singing Chim Chim Cher-ee! The price is amazing to boot.
Perfectly pleased.

For one brief, shining moment, there was a place known as Camelot--and this 1961 recording is the only document available of JFK's favorite musical, the one that's been used to describe his presidential administration ever since. Truthfully, Lerner and Loewe's musical score for this retelling of the King Arthur story doesn't measure up to My Fair Lady, which was still playing when Camelot opened on December 3, 1960. That being said, the three principals here were stronger musically than their 1968 film counterparts--Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet (who became a star as Lancelot, thanks to "If Ever I Would Leave You") could sing, while the pre-Liz Richard Burton could recite those great lines with Shakespearean flair, even if he never scored a hit with "MacArthur Park." --Bill Holdship

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Camelot Broadway.......2007-06-08

I was disappointed by this CD. I very much prefer the Movie version of Camelot with Richard Harris.
The only positive side is listening to the voice of Richard Burton.

5 out of 5 stars gorgeous recording..............2007-06-06

CAMELOT features a beautiful score with some of the most beloved songs in the musical repertoire, written by the team of Lerner & Loewe. They include "If Ever I Would Leave You," a ballad recounting the timelessness of a love affair, though forbidden, that knows no season. The Original Broadway Cast recording features a young Julie Andrews, as Guinevere, Richard Burton, as King Arthur, and Robert Goulet, as Lancelot. The whole cast does a great job recreating the golden time of the mystical world of Camelot, filled with romantic intrigue and scheming sorcery. It's a shame that the original players couldn't have been brought to the big screen when the film version was made. This is the only remnant we have of this amazing show, at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Yes!.......2007-05-19

Thanks. We're going to see it soon and I wanted a recording to become familiar with it. :-)

5 out of 5 stars An unrepeatable performance of a beautiful musical show.......2007-05-09

This recording catches a rare moment in time when good fortune brought together a talented cast of singer-actors who were at their peak and showed it. The saddest thing is that dated video technology of the period and other factors during its run on Broadway missed the opportunity for visual appreciation today but, at least we have the haunting sounds to enjoy. I never thought of Richard Burton as a singer, but the feeling!!......WOW!!. And who could match the sweetness of Julie Andrews?....the definitive performance of Robert Goulet's "If ever I should leave you". Superb addition to any record collection

5 out of 5 stars Dream Cast.......2007-03-10

Oh could there ever be another Arthur other than Burton. Once you have heard this score sung by this cast all others pale. The movie version does not even compare although I am a Richard Harris fan indeed. I also agree with another reviewer as to what Hollywood was thinking not using this case in the film version. What a delight both visually and soundwise to see and hear this extrodinary group of players. Oh well, I am grateful it is now remastered and sounding better than ever. The golden days of Broadway.

Nobody knows heartache like Mary J. knows heartache. But as she releases her seventh disc, perhaps more important is that nobody understands better how unquenchable our thirst to hear what it sounds like can be. The Breakthrough, contrary to run-up rumors, is no retrospective or greatest-hits package. Rather than reheat, Blige and producers Dr. Dre, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Will.i.am tasked themselves with stirring a river of hurt into some of the highest-caliber hip-hop/soul to hit the airwaves since she burned up the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack with "Not Gon' Cry." Cameos alone could sell this disc: Brook, Jay-Z, Raphael Saadiq, and Bono step up. But it's the trademark ragged-edged soul of its star that shines brightest throughout the 16 tracks. "A love that tears you down ain't really love," a laid-bare Blige reminds us on "Ain't Really Love," after dedicating "Good Woman Down" to "my troubled sisters." Somewhere in between, she leaves absolutely no room for doubt that she just can't be without her baby ("Be Without You"). It's an exhilarating, love-affirming moment on a CD jammed full of them (check out "Can't Get Enough," with its echoes of a pleading Curtis Mayfield). Blige, never far from the thoughts of the lovelorn, didn't need a breakthrough, but anybody with an ear for artful confession will be glad she's given us The Breakthrough anyway. --Tammy La Gorce
