On this 1986 debut, Steve Earle burst on the scene as a fully-formed songwriting master, synthesizing effortlessly the finest parts of country-folk troubadours like Townes Van Zandt and the anthemic, working-class rock of Bruce Springsteen. "Someday," a country-rock masterpiece about a kid stuck pumping gas in a dead-end town, remains the perfect realization of this style, but with the exception of the slight and silly "Little Rock 'N' Roller," most everything else here (especially "Hillbilly Highway" and the heartbreaking ballad "My Old Friend the Blues") comes awfully close. --David Cantwell

It's a teenage fantasy: after enduring countless auditions, five young guys from across the U.S. are chosen to be members of a boy group. They will call Orlando home. They will live together in a house while they prepare their debut album. They will work with legendary record executive Clive Davis. They will be the first to be signed to his new label. They will be filmed every step of the way. If all goes according to formula, they will also be teen heartthrobs with a few hit songs on the radio. So goes the story of O-Town, the group created for and by the ABC television show Making the Band. Taking a step past saccharine pop, O-Town venture into Michael Jackson-inspired R&B ("Girl"), piano-driven balladry ("All or Nothing," which sounds a bit like Bryan Adams), and even straight-up rock ("Love Should Be a Crime" could be sung just as easily by Jon Bon Jovi, but wouldn't sound as good). They also make endless pop culture references, especially in their single, "Liquid Dreams": "I dream about a girl who's a mix of Destiny's Child, just a little touch of Madonna's wild style, with Janet Jackson's smile / Throw in a body like a Jennifer, you've got the star of my liquid dreams." The words aren't the only playful elements here--watching them compete against boy band stalwarts the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync should be just as fun. Even with such tough competition, though, O-Town deserve a chance. With their hit show in its second season and with songs as good as "Liquid Dreams" and "The Painter," they'll get one. --Heidi Sherman

3 out of 5 stars what happened to 13th song "We fit together".......2006-04-24

This album used to have the song "We fit together" and now it does not. That was the best song on the cd what happened to the song?

1 out of 5 stars failure.......2005-09-06

A lot of people were looking forward to this album because of the high publicity it got after i bought this album i found only a couple of tracks worth listening the rest were real scrap and i m sure the result from this album would stop such foolish ventures by Mtv and music companies in the future

1 out of 5 stars Pure, off the assembly line pop...........2005-06-16

Comon people listen to some music with soul and meaning. Buy Guns 'N Roses Use your Illusion albums. They rock and they'll blow you away musically. They have guys who play their own instruments in it, and play that very well. Please don't let music like this reign the charts anymore. It is a scam by the record companies for them to make s**tloads of money. They give you this sleek "appealing" commercial trash used to fool you and get YOUR MONEY!!! Please listen to real music. Their are starving musicians everywhere around the world who deserve to get paid before these little droids do.

3 out of 5 stars Unique set of boys to look out for..........2005-01-02

Though I'm no longer a boyband-loving girl anymore, I still stand to my opinions that BSB, NSync and Otown are probably the few of the tons that actually have their own originality and they sound well together. Bad examples of boybands - Natural, Code Red, whatever crap that fizzle out after 1 month.

I'm gonna make this short and simple by commenting on the songs, and you decide if you wanna buy it. I don't think I need to kiss up to the band anyway so I'll tell you the absolute truth. (all rated out of possible 5)

1. Liquid Dreams - Skip this song. It's death to ears. 0.
2. Every Six Seconds - I like this song. Sexual, but good. 4.
3. Girl - I think it sounds sweet... but it grows on you. 3.
4. Sexiest Woman Alive - I think this song is sexy, and I love how most of the songs here are implying sex in a way. It feels good to listen, as a girl. Don't we all like to be flattered? 4.
5. Love Should Be A Crime - I love this song. It could easily be sung by Bon Jovi, but after a while it gets old and you just wanna bang your head to the wall. 2.
6. Shy Girl - Great song. I think it's sweet and sincere. Too sweet maybe, but it works. 4.5
7. All Or Nothing - I like Dan's vocals here. I think he has a great voice and should pursue a career on his own. But overplayed. 3.6
8. Sensitive - SKIP. I just don't like this. 0
9. The Painter - Replay. Replay. Replay. 5+
10. Take Me Under - Just okay. Skip it. 2
11. All For Love -Crappy. 0
12. Baby I Would- Skip it.

The best part about this cd is that it's just sexual and it's good to just listen and have fun.

Overall, you can see that this cd is lesser than mediorce, but I like the fact that it has a unique sound to it... it's a cut above pop these days.

But this album, but I doubt everyone will appreciate it as much as some of us do, really.

3 out of 5 stars Good effort, uneven songs in some places.......2004-09-26

O-Town's first album was good when I heard it, but the song selection wasn't all that exciting. There are some uneven songs in the middle as the group struggles to glide on the more complex material. Comparing their favorite girl to another actor or acting as if they're seeing them on TV make up some of the silliest lyrics on the album. I liked Love Should Be a Crime, The Painter, Sexiest Girl Alive and Liquid Dreams as well as the country-sounding All or Nothing (sounds like any country singer could sing it). And that uneveness went on into the second album, perhaps one of the biggest sophomore flops in music history! O-Town just didn't get very serious about their music career to start with and this album shows it.

5 out of 5 stars At one time, he traded his favorite guitar for drugs.......2007-07-16

Steve Earl is a force in American Music that is not just Folk, Rock, Country, or Pop.
Hard to get to get air play. Like Mary Gauthier, Lucinda Williams, and Anne McCue; a radio programmer's nightmare. This is good though because these artists stand pat and do not bend with the dollar.

5 out of 5 stars 2ND TRY...........2007-03-03

Buy it, you will not regret it and have a brand new hero. So to speak. Anyway, I was at a NYE Party in 1988 and a radio station gave this to host who gave it to me. Could not have been more lucky. Now I have most all SE had out. I was only 23 yrs old at time, newly married and in military (NOTHING CHANGED) and we both still buy anything SE has out. He has been thru alot, also. Listen to this mans voice and what he is putting out to there....just on the initial albumn and you will be hooked. my husband bought me new SE albumns (CD's) for my birthdays. Right on. Check out "THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW" also. Also read up on Steve Earle, anyone who can appreciate music, folk, alt country, bluegrass, etc need to check this "original" out and see for yourself.
I bought my husband SE, RSN, for Christmas year before last and he was very thankful. Can't say enough to justice to SE. Listen for yourself and be happy.

5 out of 5 stars If "Hillbilly" is a positive for you instead of a dismissive term, you should like it. .......2007-02-23

One of the best written albums of the 1980's. Song after song can grip you, if you know small towns. Earle seemed to be trying too hard in his early years and then went Hollywood after this album hit. This one defines him, not "Copperhead Road." He just wrote very well and accurately on this one. Good strong riffs, well produced, and soulful. All the elements I need for a 5 star rating. This album is comparable to Lucinda Williams's "Car Wheels..." in that it has a unifying theme, is dead-on to the theme, and has great performances. If "Hillbilly" is a positive for you instead of a dismissive term, you should like it. "Nothin ever happens around my home town and I aint the kind to just hang around..."

5 out of 5 stars Five star fabulous!!.......2006-10-01

Dare I say it, this is THE BEST country album that was recorded in the eighties. So naturally, it was largely ignored by the music row jugheads in Nashville forcing our hero to go into the realm of rock music in order to have his talent appreciated. The first six songs on this release are perfect in every way! Anyone who likes vintage Dwight Yoakam, the folkier side of Springsteen or the seventies era of Waylon Jennings should own this!! The title track is marvelous and just a blast to listen to, "Goodbye Is All We Got Left To Say" is one of the best written songs ever and "Hillbilly Highway" will get stuck in your head for days!! Then as if this trio wasn't good enough, then along comes "Gettin' Tough" to knock you upside the head followed by a couple songs later by "Someday" known as the greatest song Springsteen NEVER wrote! If this album isn't a five star, then I don't know what is!! Buy it, love it, live it!! It's that good!!

5 out of 5 stars Much Improved Reissue.......2006-09-03

This is a great album that blurred whatever distinction existed between country and rock, and this guy writes really good country lyrics that aren't the least bit corny or stupid. This and the next album he released, Exit 0, are his best - and in my opinion - two of the finest country albums ever made. There was a big problem though; They were recorded digitally on either very bad equipment, or by someone who was clueless (or both), and the result was very harsh with hardly any bass. Steve got this satisfactorily fixed on Guitar Town by converting the digital tape to analog, and then to DSD, and making the nesessary sonic adjustments before down-converting to 16 bit for the cd. The result is much improved over the original CD, making this great performance more enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the film..........2007-05-06

I remembered the music in the movie as being a little better than it actually is. I was a little disappointed in the CD.

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-03-26

It just wasn't what I thought it would be and I personally didn't like it. But it is good music.

5 out of 5 stars it's all about the Malagueña.......2004-12-01

i loved the movie and the music there is good. i really like the Malagueña so i learned how to play it on guitar. the song is great i enjoyed the movie as much as i enjoyed the sound track

5 out of 5 stars Start to Finish, a Real Mexi-CAN of a Soundtrack.......2004-11-30

Alright, so the main reason I got the soundtrack was Pistolero by Juno Reactor,a real driving, pumped-up techno song. I started to get into the rest of the music on the soundtrack, and I find it an essential cd I carry along with me. The great thing about this soundtrack is you can listen in on Mexican traditional music and a glimpse of the culture, and still have some real badass-sounding guitar! Whatever you may think of the film, you can imagine the actors playing their parts in your head, since they play and sing in the soundtrack (as the first one). There is an aura in the music I can't put my finger on; there's a history, an old feel to it, but it lingers with new musical ideas. Kinda like the movie, in terms of making it. I agree fullheartedly with previous reviews: where the movie fails, the music fills in the gaps and expands on Mexican music, making the entire movie/soundtrack experience very deep and epic. I dunno, maybe I'm rambling, but I emphasize that this soundtrack adds culture and kickass to your collection, as it did mine.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie!.......2004-11-21

When I first saw this film I was shocked at its total stupidity. I was a big fan of the first Desperado and this sequel completely choked my enthusiasm. One thing that was good about this film though was the music. I have to admit it, the music was excellent and in harmony with the motion picture. The best tracks on this CD are Traeme Paz, El Mariachi and Siente Mi Amor (Salma Hayek brings out the best in her sensuality in this song). I'm not a big fan of Latino music but some of these songs are so beautiful they deserve to be listened to. Yo Te Quiero and Cuka Rocka both are well known songs and excellent to dance to, while Flor Del Mal is a very nice and chilling ballad. This CD is a great addition to your music collection, don't hesitate to buy it.

I was lucky enough to catch this band live at Jazz Fest New Orleans in 99 just before they split, the CD is every bit as goooooood,im going to enjoy following up the rest of the bands music Enjoy its well worth the money

4 out of 5 stars Soulful Rocking.......2002-11-24

Pat McLaughlin is a favorite solo artists of mine. All 4 of the CD's I have give the same kind of soulful rocking flavor on much of the Tiny Town disc. Although, "Get Out & Stay Out," "Pat McLaughlin" on Capitol, "Unglued" & "Wind It On Up" are hard to find these days, it made me jump for joy when the back cover said Pat was part of this band. Even though I had to scratch the bottom of my change purse, I did not leave the store without it. Also, although I never listened to Subdudes, Tommy Malone's solo disc "Soul Heavy" has spent a long time in my changer with "Fat Tuesday" a particular favorite.

Which brings me to this excellent disc. Pat's front & center on the opener "I'm Sorry Baby" which is about the bounciest breakup song you're likely to hear. Tommy takes over on "Pretty Pink Flower" with some stinging lead guitar in the bridge. Although I usually lean toward the rockers, one of my favorites is the slower "Love Lead Us Home" with its addictive beat, the punctuation of organ flourishes and that stately lead guitar on a song about violence, "Ain't it cute how they gun each other down?" Tommy does lead vocals on the midtempo pop track "Hollywood" & then rocks on "Don't Let Time Run Out." Pat gives "Baby Ain't Got No Home" that blue-eyed soul feel somewhere between Otis Redding & Hall & Oates. Johnny Ray Allen gives a sound like The Band on "Learning How to Live." "The good news is I ain't dead yet," Pat sings on the earnest "New Day." "Straight Up" is a boogie jam that'd make the Allman Brothers Band proud! Johnny Ray gives more Band flavor on "Little Child" which repeats the track title a few too many times in the lyric. Tiny Town gets funky & soulful on "Save It for a Rainy Day." "Follow You Home" has driving electric lead on this pulsing rocker. The song "Tiny Town" is a wistful musical mission statement, "You might think honesty is a virtue & let kindness shine on through; In all the other towns I been to the people act like they got no clue." Tiny Town's music will keep your toe tapping and a smile on your face. U snooze, U lose!

4 out of 5 stars Digidy! Not bad boys!.......1998-12-21

By some amazing twist of fate, the vary day i recieved my copy of this album (from this very outlet) I went to see Little Feat at a club in Boston. On the drive down I threw in the disc, and man was I psyched. This disc was everything I had hoped for, having stumbeled onto the Subdudes just as they were departing into the the land of the here-after.

When I met up with my friends before the Feat show, my buddy pulled me aside and asked if I had ever heard of the opening band: Tiny Town! Well, let me tell you. not only is the album fine, but these boys rocked the joint at the Avalon that night. Pick up the album. And if they are in your town check out the live show. I hope this is just the beginning of Tiny Town.

5 out of 5 stars Dude-Heads listen up! Tiny Town goes to the next level........1998-11-11

I bought this CD with a mixture of high expectation and a little apprehension. Being a dedicated Subdudes fan, I expected the level of musicianship and "listen-ability" of a Subdudes record, and I did not want Subdude substitutions--new players covering old styles and songs. What I did get far exceeded my expectations. The musicianship is on par if not superior to a Subdudes performance and recording. Stylistically, the songwriting and performance are a new and very agreeable animal: very slick, extremely tight rhythm and blues. Tommy Malone realizes his soul influences, with sounds reminescent of Al Green and Marvin Gaye. His guitar work and singing are superstar status. There is Boogie, there is Rock, there are Blues. I thought I'd miss Steve Amedee's trademark drum, but Blevins is INCREDIBLE and earned my ear instantly. The album definitely captures the vital energy of a live performance, and I can assure you all, a Tiny Town show is every bit as stunning if not more so than any Subdudes show, which is saying a hell of alot. I couldnt be happier to have a new and different favorite band rise up from the Subdudes. Tommy and Co have talent, class and style, and are successfully pushing onward with fresh material. I cant wait to hear on their next disc the material they are now playing on their tour. LONG LIVE TINY TOWN!!!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Background for the Holidays.......2007-01-11

Beautiful Adagios and a rich selection for the price. Audio travels to Vienna, London, Cambridge etc

5 out of 5 stars One of my very top 5 favorite holiday albums!.......2005-11-19

What a delightful surprise this 2 disc album was and I'm not a big fan of Christmas music. I loved all the selections and felt they were well performed. This is a true "must have" for any Christmas collection. Superior to many other compliations on the market. This one is a keeper! It is the one album I'll pick first to listen to after Thanksgiving.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful POCOCAT?.......2005-07-16

Great CD. The reviewer who calls him/herself POCOCAT says he/she is an opera singer. Wonder how much work an uninformed singer gets?
A "fast spinning" vibrato,as you describe Ms. Price, is not the same as a wide vibrato. The former is a speed issue, the latter a width issue. Therefore, 4 variables exist: fast, slow, wide, slim. Thus, 4 types of voice exist: fast/wide, fast/slim, slow/wide, and slow/slim. Most often a singer leans toward fast/slim or slow/wide, in varying degrees. A matter of taste, yes, but learn more about the voice before you expound.

5 out of 5 stars Like no other - multi faceted - absorbs any attention level.......2006-10-13

To think that Peter plays "behind" Jimmy Buffett. It just goes to show that their is no equal for just being in the right place at the right time. The though of them going head to head on a equal stage ------ not a fair contest!!

5 out of 5 stars Earth Town Square.......2006-06-29

Peter Mayer's beautiful words and arrangement of the hymn HYFRYDOL by Rowland Prichard was what drew me to this well-crafted CD. The other tunes only add to this very musical CD. Clear voiced, beautiful acoustic work, and lyrics that stand out make this a CD I can sit back and listen to, or many times I just grab my harmonica and play along. Mayer is a terrific musician.

5 out of 5 stars Poetry never sounded better........2004-09-07

When we praise the "poetry" of songwriters, the standard is usually not very high. We can be pretty pleased when a song rises a bit above the banal. This CD is, however, musical poetry of an entirely higher sort. Peter Mayer's songwriting is a treat. Felicitous images flow in an unbroken, delightful stream.

Start with the first cut on the CD. "Ocean Mary" is a woman who lives by a magic stream. She has a dream: "She imagined that, inside, stirred all the waters of the earth. Every puddle, every creek and every one of the Seven Seas. She could feel the fishes roam in her fingers and her toes. And in her chest, the Gulf Stream flow."

That would be enough to recommend this remarkable album, but Mayer's singing is just as pleasing. He has a clear, resonant voice that reminds me of James Keelaghan. I've been so swept away by the lyrics and singing that I have paid less attention to his guitar skills, but he's good.

There's more. Mayer is a wonderful tunesmith, at least to judge by this CD. One of my favorite tunes is "Blue Boat Home," a highly singable and fetching melody that perfectly matches the elegaic sentiments of the song.

Maybe other people are luckier than I am, but I don't find albums I enjoy this much very often. Discovering Earth Town Square is perhaps the nicest thing to happen to me lately. Peter Mayer has created an album that is like a great friend. It has a lot to say and a wonderful way of saying it. You just love spending time with it.

5 out of 5 stars A Consummate Artist.......2004-04-10

Peter is equally gifted in all areas of his craft. His songwriting is deep and passionate, clever and accessible, emanating from a mind that is sublimely curious about life, love, science, and people, and a heart that skips a beat in wonder at the miracle of it all. On top of this he is a superb guitar player and has a compelling and lovely voice. At one concert I heard an audience member saying they'd come from three states away to hear him -- and I know why. It's not just the way he performs or writes; it's the way he thinks. I would recommend this album to anyone, of any age. He will lift you up from your life!

5 out of 5 stars Can't say enough good things about Peter Mayer!.......2004-01-17

This man is brilliant. Listening to his work is one great discovery after another.

First you hear a lovely song - nice tune, maybe some catchy lyrics - and you smile and tap or hum along.

Then you really listen to the lyrics and you hear layers of meaning - funny wordplays and intellectual ideas that no ordinary songwriter could touch. (When is the last time you heard a song about physics that captured the essence of some complicated scientific concepts, had spiritual resonance, and was fun to listen to? Probably never - until you've heard 'World of Dreams' from Bountiful.)

Then you see him play live and you realize that nearly all of those wonderful sounds are coming from one man with one guitar. Percussion, melody, you name it and he's playing it all at the same time. But that's not to say that his sound is bare - quite the contrary! He knows when to bring in maracas, accordians, mandolins, or other instruments to augment his amazing guitar and compelling voice without overwhelming them.

The end result is funny, smart, and above all beautiful. Metaphysical lullabies and sailing songs, humorous warnings about magic water, spiritual carnies, the simple joys the county fair, and a perfect Thanksgiving holiday tune to top it off. This album is his best yet.

4 out of 5 stars Some Forgotten Gems.......2007-03-04

Among Cashophiles there's no little debate over the quality of his recordings for Mercury/Polygram, the label he turned to after his long stint with Columbia Records. Some detect a falling-off during this period, and perhaps there was: Once hit the peaks of Cash at Folsom and At San Quentin, and then where do you go? Still, Cash kept recording, expanding in difrerent directions, revisiting old songs with new takes. And subpar Cash--if this be--is superior to most of whatever else is available, even thirty years later. This is a reasonably priced, two-album compilation disc. I enjoy listening to it, and repeatedly so.

5 out of 5 stars "Too many nights of not being together....then he died.".......2006-01-11

A friend recently offered me a Cash album someone gave him that had been laying around for several years.Lo and Behold it had never been opened.I didn't recall seeing it and when I looked at the songs on the back, most were not familar to me.This album was published in 1987 by PolyGram after Cash had left Columbia and was in a hiatus of his popularity, and before he teamed up with Rubin when it took off again.I have to admit,as much as I've followed Cash there were only two songs here that were familar;the title song and 'Sixteen Tons'.As for the rest, what a pleasant surprise. My favorite is "Let Him Roll',written by that great Texas Songwriter ,Guy Clark. In my opinion ,as great a song as ,and somewhat along the linesof 'The Ballad of Ira Hayes",one of Cash's all time best ballads.Clark filled this ballad with insightful and picturesque lines which get spoken like nobody but Cash can do.
Here are just a couple from it;
"He always thought that Heaven was a Dallas whore."
"He was an elevator man in a cheap hotel,in exchange for rent
in a one room cell."
"She turned his last proposal down in favor of being a girl
about town."
"Old One-eyed John said her name was Alice, she used to be whore
in Dallas."
"When they went through his personal affects, among the stubs
from the Welfare cheques....
"I'll bet he's gone to Dallas--Bless his Soul."

When do the words in a Country Song get better than that!!
This recording is a big departure from his earlier which were recorded in the Nashville studios. This was recorded in "The Cowboy Arms & Recording Spa with Jack "Cowboy" Clement ,the performer-writer-producer-publisher and proprietor in his home turned office/recording studio/salon.Here we also get the great harmony of The Carter Sisters(Helen,Anita and June),Carlene Carter,Waylon Jennings and Cindy Cash-Stuart;along with that are Cash,s band including Marty Stuart. The album liner notes include Cash's accomplishments of 32 years at that time. The are two very different and excellent, and to me not seen before, portraits of Cash from that period.
I would be remiss in not saying that on several of the songs ,the music tended to drown out Cash's voice, making it difficult to understand his words at times. On a couple of ballads it even sounded like he was standing too far from the mike.
In spite of this I am very thrilled to add this album to my collection of Johnny's work.
By the way,it seems this album has been reissued as a CD and it appears from the sound sample, that my concerns have been corrected.
Any Cash fan should enjoy this;even though sometimes he's not the man in black.

3 out of 5 stars The Records before the American Recordings.......2004-01-19

If you're curious as to what Johnny Cash did between Columbia Records dropping him in 1986, and hooking up with Rick Rubin in 1994, then this two-fer of albums released in 1987 and 1989 will satisfy you. Although, Coming To Town got the most attention, I've always been partial to the latter, with its Sun Rockabilly sound. These aren't essential releases for Cash newbies. But for die-hards they're a good addition to your Cash library.

5 out of 5 stars Monteagle Mountain.......2003-09-20

I loved the album and the music is so real sounding with out all the studio garb in the music tracks. You can here the words and feel the story. I've been on Monteagle Mountain and That is a real Trucker song if ever there was one! I first heard this on the radio and was so glad to find that the album is that good with all the other songs.

4 out of 5 stars A great Johnny Cash twofer.......2003-03-08

This CD reissues two lesser-known Johnny Cash albums, both from an era when his work wasn't given much respect. Still, anyone who gives this disc a spin will probably be pleasantly surprised.

"JOHNNY CASH IS COMING TO TOWN" (1987): Anybody wowed and mystified by Johnny Cash's "big change" in the 1990s, when he started covering edgy rock tunes must notta been paying attention during the '60s when he avidly championed Bob Dylan... Or here, when he tackled Elvis Costello's "Big Light." He also includes not one, but two songs by Texas singer-songwriter Guy Clark -- "Let Him Roll" and Clark's ode to construction machinery, "Heavy Metal." Admittedly, this isn't the high point of Cash's career, and the sometimes misguided production frequently falls flat, but it's still an interesting album, and worth checking out. A high point is his tribute to the founders of western swing, "W. Lee O'Daniel (And The Light Crust Dough Boys)" which thematically is a great country song, even if the horn arrangements and melodies are all wrong.

"BOOM CHICKA BOOM" (1989): Yeah, he's got that same old "boom chicka boom" rhythm going on behind him, but the songs sure veer off in some interesting directions. The opening track, "Backstage Pass To A Willie Nelson Show," affectionately makes fun of Willie and Waylon and their whole "outlaw" crew while "Farmer's Almanac," "Harley" and "Don't Go Near The Water" pursue political and environmental themes that are as pointed and on-the-nose as anything Johnny recorded in the Vietnam War era. The production is pretty simplified and stripped down, and it suits Johnny well. Good record... definitely worth checking out!

5 out of 5 stars So you thought the ocarina was only a toy!.......2004-12-04

The Chuckerbutty Ocarina Quartet proves here that good musicianship and lots of fun can co-exist sensationally. For an ear sated with the standards this CD will jog you out of the rut while it shows what can be done with an unconventional instrument. The Carnival of Venice variations is an awesome display of virtuosity, and very enjoyable as light music (between variations don't be surprised to hear a quote from some familiar classic). The Beethoven 5th will not go down as an historic interpretation, but it's fun! Overall the disk has variety, humor, and fine playing, and it's a great conversation piece. I recommend it with pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars I can always take Steve Earle.......2002-12-27

Perhaps it is because I am a fan, but Steve Earle can always say something I want to hear. The benchmark for singer/songwriters is high, and Earle is among the greatest. He ranks with the likes of Lyle Lovette, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and Eric Taylor. Every cut evokes a vivid and detailed mental image
