I grew up to this CD. These guys, simple songs, but so much soul!!! Ska can really suck, but when it is great its great, and the gadjits are spectacular!!!

5 out of 5 stars the gadjits kick arse.......2000-09-28

the gadjits can ROCK !!THey tear it up in their live performances like nobody's bid'ness! their music hits explosively live. look for them when they're in town because they are truly a sight to behold( i couldn't keep my eyes off their gorgeous keyboardist!oh-my-god!the drummer could be keith moon's clone, who knows?!) and to hear!

5 out of 5 stars spiffy.......2000-03-19

spiffy dosen't quite cover it. I have a friend who got me into ska and the gadjets are one of my favorite bands. some songs that really tell it like it is, like back up, and beautifull girl. they are right up there with hepcats and slackers. buy this cd!

5 out of 5 stars How Good?.......1999-11-10

This is the most relaxing music cd i have ever come across.Although it relaxing it is also jam packed with quality tunes like "Traffic Tickets" ,"She Bop" and "Beatiful Girl".I think this album is one of the freshest sounding music experiences i have eer heard, and their new one "Wish We'd Never Met" is also quality...I Love This Band

5 out of 5 stars the gadjits DO rule.......1999-09-26

i saw this band open for hepcat and the slackers about 1 1/2 years ago, the crowd sucked and wasn't into it at all, but i absolutely fell in love with the gadjits.. they put on a really energetic show and the music is just great. this cd is a wonderful combination of ska and soul, i think (without the horns).

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected Surprise.......2003-11-22

I discovered the Gadjits on my own and they are really enjoyable. If you like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Slow Gherkin, Dance Hall Crashers, or the ska in general, consider picking up this CD or At Ease (I've not heard their other CDs). If you want a more of punk angle I'd look else where. If you want clever lyrics and some cool music, this CD gets a thumbs up.

Have fun. Super G.

5 out of 5 stars Gadjits new bio.......2002-01-25

In 1977, EnglandÕs musical landscape was being shaped by The Clash, Elvis Costello, and The Who. In the U.S., AC/DC was breaking and Kiss was the number one band; the underground was being led by The Stooges and Johnny Thunders. At the same time, in a well-manicured suburb of Kansas City called Leawood, The GadjitsÕ main singer and songwriter Brandon Phillips was born. Fourteen years later Brandon would lead his younger brothers, Adam (9) and Zach (11) into a seedy bar in Kansas City to play The GadjitsÕ first gig to a handful of barflies and Harley riders. From that moment on, The Gadjits would spend the next ten years in a van gigging the punk rock circuit, instead of attending classes at Leawood High.

The bandÕs truant officer, so to speak, would be RancidÕs Tim Armstrong, who signed the band to his Epitaph/Hellcat label during The GadjitsÕ teen years. The bandÕs sound, embraced and directed by Armstrong, was made up of a hybrid of rock steady and punk that fit loosely into skaÕs 3rd Wave, which was in full swing at the time. As the young Gadjit brothers exposed themselves to the rich history of rumor, glory, and romance of life on the road, they developed into a smart and savvy rock and roll band. A band so true to the life that they had made for themselves, they would risk it all and no longer play the blue beats that once perked the kidsÕ ears. Instead they would write and perform a perfect blend of American roots, blues, and rock and roll. The change in musical direction was so severe that Hellcat passed on the bandÕs new sound, leaving the band in limbo for over a year. It wasnÕt until February of 2001 that THICK RecordsÕ mainstay and frontman of the Blue Meanies, Billy Spunke, became so enamored with the band during a short tour with The Gadjits that he brought them aboard the eclectic THICK Records.

Now one year later, THICK Records proudly releases ÒToday Is My Day,Ó a record written, recorded, and mixed by the band in their Leawood house. Joined by Mike Alexander (Revolvers) on second guitar and Ehren Starks on keys, The Gadjits open the garage door to a new sound that captures the true essence of rock and rollÕs classics. ItÕs not the sound of todayÕs rock resurgence, i.e. The Strokes and The White Stripes, but a revival following their own instincts instead of the current trends; proving once again that the kids truly are alright.

When I first bought this cd it was because my friend recommended it, and i didnt think it was anything special. But now it rocks my world! It's glued to my stereo, and i think my friends are gonna stab me in the ear soon because i listen to it so damn much. 4 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Ska fans.......1999-08-02

Anyone who loves the ska should definitely purchase this CD. This SoCal ska band is one of the best live acts ever, and since you can't see them live all the time, you need this one to listen to in your car.

4 out of 5 stars One Fantastic Band!.......1999-05-17

This album rocks! It is definitely worth your time! The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that the album does not do justice to the energy of the live shows. Check it out!

i bought this cd at tower about 3 years ago. my favorite hard-core ska band not ska punk but more pure hardcore ska.

The Skeletones have been around for 12 years and this CD shows their accomplished style, and talent. This is NOT band wagon/poser ska.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two tone greatness.......2004-09-24

At first listen these cd's are pure gold. Great variety of sounds and bands and if you are trying to get into two tone it's a great starter. However, there are a rather large amount of repeat songs and it kind of ruins it. This is the only reason i give the set 4 and not 5 stars. It's definetly worth your 20 bucks though and i definetly dont regret getting this set.

4 out of 5 stars Barrel Full o' Ska.......2001-01-01

This isn't a brilliant box set, and it's definitely not definitive, but it's a pretty good one at an unbeatable price. There's a few classic Jamaican tracks, but this is mostly UK cuts from the 80s and 90s. The songs from the Two-Tone artists you may have heard of (such as Bad Manners) are generally live, and a 90s revival band, Special Beat, with members of the Two-Tone bands The Specials and The (English) Beat, performs live cuts from their original bands.

There's also a lot of people you've almost certainly never heard of. Some of it's not that great, but a lot of it's pretty good. If you're looking to expand your ska collection and want to hear a lot of different stuff, this is a good collection. This is excellent source material for making your own compilation CDs or tapes, where you can screen out the misses. As the previous reviewer mentioned, there's some repeats, but you're still getting a huge amount of music cheap.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Two-Tone Stylee, with repeats repeats repeats.......1999-07-10

Six raucous CDs hiding under unassuming two-tone artwork, though it's mostly UK-based stuff, a lot of it live cuts from variants of The Beat and the Specials, mixed in with some well-known names and some slightly more obscure bands. It isn't all great, but out of six CDs you're going to get your twenty bucks worth. Just be warned that in true Dressed To Kill fashion, this bulk-dump box set includes a number of repeat cuts (including a couple that repeat from disc three to disc four.)

5 out of 5 stars NYC SKA IS GREATEST........2006-03-23

Cannot believe that there has passed almost a decade since the release of "Open Season," and it is still at par with any Ska production of 2006. This CD is simply brilliant. Among all steller tracks, my favorite is "Lieutenant." This song itself worths checking this cd out, it has every vibe that NYC ska offers, from the killer Ruggiero's organ to the smoother Django's voice, not to mention the chilling Hillyard's tenor. If you never discovered the beauty of Lieutenant, better pick this CD up! NYC SKA is the best.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC IN BOTH SKA AND MUSIC.......1999-10-14

It's hard to sum up all the accolades I'd like to splurge out; to be perfectly blunt, this album (as well as their follow-up, Back With a New Batch) is one that defines modern (and even traditional) ska and proves that even in the bland banality of the '90s, originality and genius is still alive. Jeff "Django" Baker is a mastermind, and Vic Ruggiero is one of the most amazing musicians to come around ever in popular music (and, trust me, i've heard a lot of music)!

      5 out of 5 stars A Solid Collection.......2002-07-10

Writing from an American viewpoint, I can say that this set contains music from names many of us may never have heard from before, and I wAger people from other parts of the world may not know many of these people as well. But, obscurity aside, this is a completely listenable set with, in my opinion, no bad tracks. There are a few tracks that are less listenable than others, of course, but all the tracks go together. There are tracks that are more modern than others, but they compliment each other well, and this is a well rounded collection.
