How far left of center is Kinky Friedman in terms of the country-music establishment? It took some string-pulling from none other than Commander Cody, that bastion of country conservatism, to get Friedman his contract with Vanguard. This 1973 debut would be the Kinkster's only Vanguard release, and it introduced the world to his compelling and confounding musical vision. Everyone remembers absurd titles such as "Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed" and "High On Jesus," but the real reasons to dig this up are the serious and sensitive songs. "Ride 'Em Jewboy" is a touching Holocaust lyric, and "Sold American," about forgotten country stars and crass commercialism, inspired cover versions from both the Kingston Trio and Glen Campbell. Top Nashville pickers Norman Blake, John Hartford, and Doyle Grisham give the music its authentic country style. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars This Album is a Gem.......2002-12-21

As a musician, Kinky Friedman has always been known for his humorous side. And if that's what you're into, this album contains several of his funniest and most offensive (to the politically correct) songs: "Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed" and the immortally deranged "Ballad of Charles Whitman," to name two.

5 out of 5 stars The Kinkster Is A Classic.......2001-06-14

I bought this album (Sold American) by Kinky Friedman after borrowing a tape of it from a friend. It's from the early 1970s and has something from that era for everyone. Whether it is a humorous look at women's lib (Get Your Biscuits In The Oven And Your Buns In The Bed) or the simple country anguish of Western Union Wire, Kinky Friedman & the Texas Jewboys bring their own individual style to every song on this cd. The best song, evoking Kinky's Texas Jewish roots, is Ride 'Em Jewboy.

5 out of 5 stars SOLD AMERICAN.......2001-01-12

I have the l.p. of SOLD AMERICAN and I listen to it all day long. Every song on this album is great. In some of the songs KINKY sounds a little like Bob Dylan. I would like to find a chat room , where I can chat about KINKY FRIEDMAN.. Can anyone help me..My favorite songs are SOLD AMERICAN, HIGH ON JESUS, WESTERN UNION WIRE, WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO SERVE YOU, SILVER EAGLE, AND THE ONE ABOUT THE TEXAS SHOOTER (FORGOT THE TITLE)

5 out of 5 stars But this album!.......2000-06-17

The Kinksta predates most punk bands by several years, but has that attitude that would alienate all the people that deserve to be alienated i.e anyone who takes themselves too seriously. I can't add any comment on the music that hasn't been said on this page already (OK, I'm not much of a music critic....)so just buy it and enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars My Hero!.......2000-02-11

If all of the songs on this album had been of the level of quality and/or cutting sarcasm as "Sold American", "We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to You" or "Ride 'Em Jewboy" (to pick some of the better ones more or less at random), it would be a five-star effort.

As it is, "High on Jesus" and "Top Ten Commandments", among others, drag it down one level -- these are neither truly believable as what they sound like, nor sufficiently satirical to actually make a point.

That said, You Still Need This Album.

You Need It because of "Sold American" and "Silver Eagle Express" -- two perfectly touching country ballads of lost youth, lost innocence and lost dreams.

You Need It because of "Western Union Wire", a classic country honkytonk tear-in-the-beer song with a twist.

You Need It because of "We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to You", "The Ballad of Charles Whitman" and "Flyin' Down the Freeway", three deadpan sardonic takes on aspects of life from Kinky's twisted perspective.

And You Need It because "Ride 'Em Jewboy" sounds as if it ought to be another piece of black humourous satire... and turns out to be a touching meditation on the Holocaust.

Mostly, You Need It because it's a unique American voice at the peak of his talent, and you shouldn't miss it, no matter what kind of music you usually listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Outlaw country with crackling satire and heart.......2006-12-13

The oversized public persona of Kinky Friedman is better known as the eponymous character he's developed in a series of popular detective novels. Those who know Friedman's music are often familiar only with the rabble-rousing satire of songs like "Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed" and "High on Jesus." But even at his most sarcastic, there was a point beyond the hackle raising. Friedman was a true iconoclast, coming into his own in the age of outlaw country (and spurred on by no less than Commander Cody), and he wrote and sang with the remarkable freedom of that age. This 1973 debut remains his greatest musical statement.

One need only look beneath the acoustic country production and rabble-rousing exteriors of a title like "Ride 'em Jewboy" to find a compassionate tribute to a holocaust survivor. Similarly, the album's jokey opener, "We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to You," has something deeper to say about prejudice than its sing-along chorus suggests on a first hearing. Texas in the early '70s wasn't the most hospitable place for freaks or Jews, especially not for freaky Jews, and Friedman parlays his experiences into a more universal message to outcasts of all stripes.

In contrast to firecrackers like "High on Jesus" and "The Ballad of Charles Whitman," Friedman wrote more subtle songs such as the title track's story of a closing musical frontier and a faded singing cowboy. What's particularly impressive is that the writing isn't either-or, but instead a mesh of the sacred, profane, understanding and acidic, with incisiveness always lurking beneath the surface. Chuck Glaser's mostly acoustic production provides the perfect low-key background, allowing the lyrics' wit to unfold without musical histrionics.

Friedman would never make an album as solid as this, venturing to Los Angeles for a mis-produced follow-up in '74, and minting a looser Rolling Thunder styled LP in '76 before taking a hiatus from recording. Neither of the follow-up releases approached the confluence of this initial burst of creativity and mid-70s country-on-the-margins sound. Unfortunately, the combination of political viewpoint and country music didn't satisfy either big city intellectuals or mainstream country fans, and the album flopped commercially.

Vanguard's 30th anniversary CD reissue augments the original album with a pair of bonus tracks ("Nashville Casualty and Life" and "Tramp on the Street") that date from the original sessions, and a four-part video interview with Friedman that was conducted in 2003. This is a great package of a seminal album whose influence has far outstripped its original sales. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

5 out of 5 stars "They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore.......2005-02-11

Kinky knows the basic difference between Christianity and Judaism is that "Jesus Saves and Moses Invests". So do yourself a big favor and invest a few bucks on this here Kinkster Klassic. Orginally released in '73 on Vangaurd Records, THE bastion of folk music, the likes of Joan Baez and Eric Anderson. But let us not forget that the same Vangaud brought us irreverent delight in Country Joe & the Fish's ode to LBJ "Super Bird". And remember the late great Richard Farina? Hewas also a Vangaurd recording artist. His "House On Un-American Activity Blues" was about as subversive as it during LBJ's tenure in the White House.

Then there was Kinky and his ultra smooth backup unit, "The Texas Jew Boys". Yep, Kinky says "They ain't makin' Jews like Jesus anymore". Come to think of it, they ain't makin' great record albums like Sold American anymore neither. Why Hell!!!!They ain't makin' record albums anymore neither!!!

5 out of 5 stars A classic..........2004-11-01

Kinky is better known for "novelty" type tunes like 'Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed"'; his more poignant work is often overlooked and that is unfortunate because those songs (most noteably "Ride 'em Jewboy") illustrate what a talented songwriter the man is. This album remains my favorite and it deserves to be distributed more widely than it has. "Sold American" is better than anything the plastic cowboys (like Garth Brooks) have ever put out--in my opinion, just about every song on this album is better than any of that dreck Nashville pushes on us today. I defy any of the vapid what-passes-for-country-music pretty boy today to top "Ride 'em Jewboy" or "Nashville Casualty and Life". I challenge them to write something better than "Western Union Wire". They can't.

Get this album first, then get "Kinky Friedman" and "Lasso from El Paso". Finally, get "Pearls in the Snow".

Go. Now.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You!! You're Welcome!!.......2003-09-23

A welcome return to an old favourite. Nice to see this great album back on the racks and sounding so good. Add to the newly remastered sound two bonus tracks (the original versions of old favourites, "Nashville Casualty and Life" and "Tramp on the Street") and a very well presented enhanced PC featurette, and you've got a real winner. Congratulations Vanguard for a nice re-issue, and thanks Kinky for the great music (you're welcome!!).

1 out of 5 stars I would expect so much more from this band.......2006-10-12

Bar far the Gandharvas worst album. I saw them live dozens of times during the 90's. If you like the First Day of Spring, then you might like some of their other songs too. But "Kicking in the Water" really captures their live sound, and the essense of the band. Buy that album instead, and download First Day of Spring from somewhere else. "Soap Bubble" is an OK album too, but not solid top to bottom. I was majorly dissappointed with Sold for A Smile. So much promise from such a great band, but this album simply doesn't connect.

4 out of 5 stars I only know one song.......2002-12-14

I only just learned today who sang the song"First day of spring", but I had to write and tell people it is probably the best song in the world and I am currently trying to find the cd so I can listen to this group in its entirety.

3 out of 5 stars ability to float your head off.......2002-02-13

The Gandharvas have the ability to float your head off your shoulder and away, as displayed on the popular single from their last album, with an airy, drifting shower of sound--unfortunately that ability is put to use only once or twice on this album. Instead, we get entertaining music with sparkles of that possibility. You just wish they'd let go of the tight hold of the reign over these songs, and be off where they may. They do let loose on the closer Diaboloney and in a rowdy, uncouth way--but they would do best to do more as they do on Waiting For Something To Happen/Reprise, which fades in on itself before a fuse is lit and the song burns brightly from the inside out.
The Gandharvas would sound better for me if they let their dreamy side wash over all the nasty edges.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2001-07-14

This CD still gets me going after some 3 years. Downtime and Watching The Girl are everyones favourites, but you can get into the rest just as well. 5 stars for this one!

5 out of 5 stars gandharvas.......2001-01-01

I can't believe there are only 4 reviews for this excellent CD. Although, they haven't really caught on in the states. I live only a half hour or so from Canada, and only hear them once in a while on the radio. The singles are "Downtime" and "First Day of Spring", and while Downtime is still one of my favorites, the best on the CD, in my opinion, are "Watching the Girl" and their cover of the often-covered "Time after Time" by Cyndi Lauper, which is the best version I've heard, much better than the original. The only low spots are Shells, which I can just not get into, and Waiting for Something To Happen, only because the second half of the song is filled with the same riffs over and over again, and no lyrics. The Gandharvas have a very eclectic style which includes alternative, softer rock and even heavy metal (Diaboloney). If you are looking for a new band to check out, you may want to check out the Gandharvas.

4 out of 5 stars not a bad debut.......2003-03-30

soul asylum was unknown to practically everyone up until 1992. 8 years earlier, this album made college airwaves, and is a classic. Probably the most signifcant song on this album is "stranger". it's on the best hits album in a live mtv unplugged version. but the original is just as good or better.

it's a lot of punk, but still good rock. unlike a few of their later 80's albums, this one is actually worth the money. it has a few 5 min songs. and the usual 2 min songs. if you are a fan of soul asylum, get this album. you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Didn't expect this.......2001-07-09

Well, thats a good thing. I love all their albums except for the last two and this first album didn't change that. I am not sure, since this album was in 1984, but i think it is the first punk album. It really is punk, all 14 songs are. I expected Rock and roll like their other 80's albums, but this is pure Punk. FAst guitars, fast lyrics, fast drums= PUNK. Luckily, I have always loved punk, so this might be a biased opinion. If you Like Soul Asylum get this, you might like it. If you were in love with the last three pop rock albums, look for something else.

4 out of 5 stars This is how they started huh?.......2000-08-29

If you're a fan of the pop side of Soul Asylum and are a casual fan (eg. you like Runaway Train only) then you might not have an appreciation for this album. For the true fan of Dave, Dan and the boys this album is a time capsule, encompassing the growth that this band has made. While nowhere near as polished and pleasant as Let Your Dim Light Shine or Candy from a stranger, this album is full of early warnings of the greatness that was about to be the Soul Asylum that many now know. The highlights of the album are "Voodoo Doll" and "Stranger" which is very jazzy and not typically unexpected on a punk album. Bottom line: if you're a Soul Asylum fan then this is a MUST BUY, if you're expecting Hootie & the Blowfish-type pop songs, look elsewhere.

    Album Description

Lawrence Santiago's Axl Rose (Guns `n' Roses) meets Peter Garrett (Midnight Oil) vocals is a match made in heaven for the hard driving rockin' sound of the band he fronts, American Popular. "Sold Out (The American Way") is a knock-yer-socks off kick ass album with no bullshit allowed. Besides, who has the time for that when you can play as good as these guys do? Nothing new going on here, it is just straight ahead hard rock music minus all the extra polish and glitter that often is added to some records to enhance their sound and cover up what a group really sounds like. Their approach is obviously to get in the studio, play their asses off, record the tracks, then let people listen. It works very well for them. The are like the spontaneous combustion that happens inside an engine, the only difference is there is not a muffler to silence the noise nor anything to keep the flames from coming out.

Santiago's voice is very flexible for a hard rock singer, he can scream, set a softer pace, or maintain an immense energy level with seemingly no effort. The music must carry him to that lofty level of vocal prowess. The variety of metal played is exciting…rock, hard rock, metal, and all of the above come into the equation offering a variety of listener's different decibel levels. For those that like their music hard, fast and loud or a mish mash of all levels of intensity, it is here on this CD. They never loose their hard-core edge and their sound is comparable to what a live in the studio recording would be.

"My Therapy" was my favorite, no surprise there, because I need therapy on a regular basis, musical that is. In truth, all the songs were great! If you need to blow the roof off your house or your noggin, this will do the trick. In a world full of sell outs that give up their beliefs and original sound just to make it in the music biz, American Popular do it their own way, the American independent music way." musicdish.com

    Album Description

Stranger in My House is an intense brew of American roots music with a strong dose of blues, R&B, New Orleans funk, acid-rock, swing and latin.

Featuring the song-writing and the emotional guitar playing of Cyril Lance coupled with the incredibly soulful vocals of Grammy-Nominee Johnny Neel (Allman Brothers), Stranger in My House will keep you grooving from beginning to end.

In many ways his artistic tribute to one of his most important inspirations, Muddy Waters, Lance has produced and arranged what most consider his best work yet. Gathering the talents of his closest friends from years on the road, Lance captures the intensity and emotion of these live performances.

Starting with Johnny Neel whose experience is a who's who of southern rock and blues (Allman Brothers, Warren Haynes, Dicky Betts, Gov't Mule....), Boston-based Matt Jenson (Ronnie Earle, Johnny Adams...) burns up the Hammond B3 organ and piano, and Chris Carroll on bass and Kelly Pace on drums round out one of the finest blues rythm sections of the south (Bob Margolin, Skeeter Brandon, Pinetop Perkins, Rev. Billy C. Wurtz, Detroit Jr...).

Lance demonstrates his considerable versatility and gutt-bucket approach on slide and electric guitars, lapsteel and acoustic guitar.

If you're into the blues, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf; if you're into Otis Redding, Ray Charles; if you're into the Allman Brothers, Carlos Santana, Johnny Winter, Little Feat; if you're into Jimi Hendrix, Danny Gatton perhaps some Kenny Burrell -- you're sure to love this release.

    5 out of 5 stars Live Performance.......2003-09-20

Caught their live act at the 'Empty Glass' in Charleston, WV this summer and thought they were fantastic. Truely a group that enjoys the music they play and the people that enjoy what they do. Never heard of them before that night, but feel that they are my discovery of the the year - make them yours. Cyril penned some great tunes, great musicians all and Chris Carroll has 'the' voice. Looking foward to their next CD or live performance in my travels.

This is one of the best blues CDs I've heard in a long time. I can't stop playing it over and over again... Great songwriting and great performances, esp. by Lance and singer Johnny Neel.

        5 out of 5 stars Hot ShYYYYt!!!!.......2004-12-19

This is my 1st E.S.G. cd but definately not the last. Some of the realest Gangsta Rap I've heard in a minute from a group. There are some hot solo artists out there but few groups. All American Gangsta, In My Cadillac, If You Wanna Ride With Us, Come With Me feat. Ideal, and I won't even say a that the collabs with Slim Thug are off the chain 4SHO. Yall betta get this if you intoGangsta Rap. Yall into Down South Rap they Reppin Houston Tx 2 the fullest.
