5 out of 5 stars Old-time cowboy hillbilly yodelling music.......2006-02-14

Patsy Montana was the female equivelant to Jimmie Rogers. She was arguably the first female country music star. And like Rogers, she may not have been the best yodeller in the world, but what she lacked in substance she certainly made up for in style. Most of Patsy's songs are upbeat, happy songs - and you can even hear Patsy's smile shining through these 75 year old tunes. Patsy started out singing with the Prairie Ramblers, a group which most afficianados label as the finest string band ever. And luckily, many of these tracks were recorded while she was still with that band, so you can hear their wonderful playing accompanying Patsy's voice. Shortly after she had gained famed by selling over a million copies of her trademark hit "I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart", she took off on a solo career that lasted until her death in the 1980's. Her yodelling actually improved with her age and you can find one of her yodelling CD's from the 80's here on Amazon and listen to her unique "yodelling grandma" style on those. But although the yodelling may be superior on those CD's, the actual songs from this CD are the cream of Patsy's crop and provide a window into a bygone era of American history that no history book can! If you want to up the ante after Patsy, I would recommend searching out songs from the phenomonally talented Rosalie Allen, who had an excellent yodelling talent and style. Unfortunately, time has not been kind to Rosalie's legacy and she has yet to receive a domestic CD release of her many wonderful tracks she recorded for RCA. So you have to find her on one of the many compilations she is featured on or on one of her duets with fellow outstanding yodeller, Elton Britt.

5 out of 5 stars Sweetheart of thirties cowboys.......2003-05-09

Patsy's most successful years were 1934 to 1940, the period covered by these recordings. Patsy later re-recorded some of her songs, but these are the originals. Her most famous song, I wanna be a cowboy's sweetheart, sold a million copies - no mean feat for a country record in the 1930's.

That song is a good example of Patsy's style, mixing mountain ballads with cowboy songs and plenty of yodelling. The melody was written by Stuart Hamblen, most famous as the writer of This ole house, a major international hit for Rosemary Clooney in the fifties and a British number one hit for Shaking Stevens in the eighties.

Woman's answer to nobody's darling is a reply to the Jimmie Rodgers classic Nobody's darling but mine. I only want a buddy not a sweetheart was a popular song in the thirties although nobody had a hit with the song - this surprises me, as I have come across several excellent versions of this song.

Patsy was the first woman to succeed in country music but she did not blaze the trail for those that followed, as country remained a male bastion for many years. The Dinning sisters and Patti Page emerged from Oklahoma in the forties, but they found success as pop singers. Rose Maddox had some success as lead singer of the Maddox brothers and Rose, but it was not until Kitty Wells and Patsy Cline emerged in the fifties that women were taken even half-seriously as country singers.

So Patsy must be regarded as a one-off. Her music was of its time, unlike anything ever recorded by other female country singers in the decades that followed. This is the best collection of Patsy's music available, or ever likely to be.

5 out of 5 stars If I could give this ten stars, I would..........2002-08-28

Was there ever another country performer as adorable as Patsy Montana? I doubt it. Montana was the greatest of the "cowgirl" singers, and now at last we get a chance to really check out Montana at her peak form -- perkily yodelling away on these delightfully antiquated, sentimental "western" tunes. This is a long-overdue American edition collecting her best work from the 1930s and '40s -- two dozen old tracks from Vocalion and several smaller labels that have been out of print for decades, available only on teeny specialty labels, and in dribs and drabs on various compilation albums. The songs are corny, but Montana's delivery is not, especially later on as her band put more and more swing into their sound -- and you can hear that progression as it actually happened, since these songs are presented in straight chronological order. A particular highlight is a tune Montana penned herself, "Cowboy Rhythm," which demonstrates how strange musical fads such as opera and jazz can't hold a candle to a coyote's howl and a lonesome guitar as the moon starts to rise... Fans of swing-string revivalists such as The Hot Club of Cowtown are strongly urged not to let this one slip by -- records this fun don't come along that often.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Yodeling Swing.......2001-10-01

Enjoying this album. As with any album which has 24 selections from one artist, you can't listen to it in one sitting! Vocalion/Conqueror 78's from 1935 to 1940. Some were written by tin-pan-alley-type professional writers and therefore artificial. The best ones were written by her. Great band.

4 out of 5 stars A nice swan song for an early country legend.......2003-02-09

Singing cowgirl Patsy Montana lit up the prairie airwaves in the 1930s, with her perky combination of cowboy tunes and swing. (For a glimpse at her early work, check out the fabulous "Best Of" collection that came out on Collector's Choice Music, in 2001) This is a nice later album, originally from 1988 and posthumously released after Montana's passing in 1996. It has sympathetic backing by modern folkies Cathy Fink, Marcy Marxer and others... Naturally, this doesn't have the sparkle of Montana's classic old stuff, which was recorded half a century earlier, but it's still pretty impressive, especially considering how old she was and how she'd kept performing all those years. The album's highlights include "Sixteen Pounds," a feminist parody of "Sixteen Tons," with new lyrics written by Montana herself ("You gain sixteen pounds, and whaddya get...?") and an updated version of "Cowboy's Sweetheart," wherein Patsy talks about being a yodelling grandmother, out on the road in her older years. It's worth checking out. (PS - this disc is not to be confused with the similarly titled "Cowboy's Sweetheart" album on King, which dates to the 1970s and is far less satisfying.)

5 out of 5 stars REAL Cowboy Music by a Lovely Lady!.......2000-07-23

Patsy Montana sings cowboy music like no one else! Young singers of today ought to take stock of how REAL country/cowboy singers, like Patsy Montana, did it in the old days. "Cowboy's Sweetheart" is a treasure trove of old, wonderful country music. You want some REALLY good singing in your library, buy this one!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Old Canadian Cowboy Sings Again!.......2007-05-25

If you're looking at this CD review, chances are you're (1) an old-timer, (2) a serious fan of cowboy/western music, or (3) a student of the history of cowboy/western music. This inference stems from the fact that "Montana Slim," known in Canada by his real name, Wilf Carter, is little heard of these days except among the above groups. But this was not always the case: in the 1930s and 40s he was very popular, both in the U.S. and Canada, for his many recordings, radio performances, and personal appearances. And though I personally have no childhood recollection of hearing his songs, I'm sure I must have heard them, for when I became aware of him in the 1960s there was from the start a sort of "deja vu" quality to his songs and his way of singing and yodeling. No doubt many others of a certain age will share that feeling of familiarity on hearing this music.

Wilf Carter (1904-1996) left his Nova Scotia home as a youth and hopped a train west to Calgary, Alberta, where he worked as a cowboy, among other odd jobs. In his spare time he practiced the singing and yodeling he'd loved and worked at since as a child he'd heard a travelling Swiss singer called "The Yodelling Fool." He also taught himself to play simple guitar accompaniments, and before long was picking up extra money with his music. By 1930 he was good enough to sing, yodel, and strum his cowboy songs weekly on the local Calgary radio station (CFCN). He was soon hired by the Canadian Pacific Railroad to entertain tourists on trail rides within the Canadian Rockies, where he was a favorite. In 1933 while passing through Montreal, he recorded two of his original songs for RCA, and the disk, which included "My Swiss Moonlight Lullaby," was a best seller by the following year. From then on his musical activities, financial success, and popularity snowballed until a serious auto accident sidelined him for nearly all of the 1940s. With his eventual recuperation he resumed his career and continued it up into his eighties, releasing his last recordings at age 84.

Starting out as a solo act, singing, yodeling, and accompanying himself on the guitar, he began to work with small bands around the 1950s with variable success, his popularity now definitely on the wane. Unlike his fellow cowboy singers Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, Roy Rogers, and Rex Allen, he never had a film career, but sustained himself and his family on the proceeds of his many records and radio and tour appearances. He died in the U.S. a few days short of his 92nd birthday, a largely forgotten figure.

During his heyday in the 1930s and 40s Montana Slim distinguished himself by his fine, straightforward singing, his expert yodeling, and his simple, but effective guitar accompaniments, in addition to his considerable talent as a song writer. (Of the 26 songs on the present CD, he is credited with 20, and he arranged two others from traditional sources.) His recorded output is impressive: the Bear Family has issued three collections of his singing, one of which alone contains 8 CDs with 159 songs! Some of his more popular songs are: My Swiss Moonlight Lullaby, The Fate of Old Strawberry Roan, The Capture of Albert Johnson, Old Shep, There's a Love-Knot in My Lariat, The Blue Canadian Rockies, The Prisoner's Song, Hang the Key on the Bunkhouse Door, When It's Springtime in the Rockies, There's a Bluebird on Your Windowsill, My Little Yoho Lady, The Smoke Went Up the Chimney Just the Same, It Makes No Difference Now, and A Little Old Log Shack I Always Call My Home.

This CD is made up mostly of Carter's earlier recordings, in which he sings and yodels to his own guitar accompaniment the songs which he personally wrote or arranged. At least 8 are among his more popular items. Only three were recorded after 1940. Much of the charm of this music lies in its simplicity and sincerity, its celebration of the simple, wholesome, hard-working life of the cowboy in the natural beauty of the wide-open spaces of the West. And if occasionally a song or two seems a bit formulaic or stereotyped, well, it never presumed to be art of the loftiest character: its folk-like nature tells us it is music made for no more serious purpose than to entertain common people. But more than a few do go beyond mere entertainment to bring us something more lasting and meaningful. They seize us with a yearning to be out there by the campfire with our fellow wranglers singing and trading tales at the end of a hard day, getting into the relaxed mood for a peaceful night of sound sleep. Is there anyone so immune to the cowboy legend that he can resist this invitation to participate in it vicariously? Not me!

ASV Living Era does a very good job of transferring these songs from the mostly 78 RPM disk sources. Their philosophy is to tamper as little as possible with the sound, and it pays off in the quality of the result. Though a few flaws will be heard, there is no suggestion of phoniness or gimmickry, but only the honest sound of a cowboy, his voice, and his guitar. The liner notes are informative, and the recording particulars, including date, of each track are given. For the money, you can't do much better musically than this CD. And if there's any trace of the cowboy in you, you'll agree with me that it rates 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars this CD -- WAY BETTER than I thought it would be !!!!!.......2006-02-19

I only got this because a friend was needing to get a copy of her favorite childhood song "Little Yoho Lady," but I kept listening to the whole CD over and over again for about a full week!! I couldn't quit listening to it. The more I listened, the more I liked Carter's lyrics and especially his voice (including his yodeling).

Wilf Carter ("Montana Slim") is a great singer/song writer.
