Marty Stuart began collaborating with legends when he joined Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass as a 13-year-old mandolinist. One of his biggest singles, 1991's "The Whiskey Ain't Workin'," teamed him with Travis Tritt. This compilation includes a rare Stuart mandolin workout on Bill Monroe's "Rawhide" recorded onstage with Flatt in 1974, and "Hearts Like Ours" with wife Connie Smith. He and ex-father-in-law Johnny Cash created a fiery revival of Cash's Sun recording of "Doin' My Time." With Steve Earle, Stuart created a beautifully understated rendition of Buddy Holly's "Crying, Waiting, Hoping." He was equally adept with Earl Scruggs on "John Henry" and with Merle Haggard on a 2003 "Farmer's Blues." That empathy extended to blues and gospel greats, apparent on "The Weight" with the Staple Singers and "Confessin' the Blues" with B.B. King. Two unreleased tracks include Stuart and Loretta Lynn reviving "Will You Visit Me on Sunday," a tune she'd previously recorded with the late Conway Twitty, and the Who's "I Can See for Miles" with Stuart, his band, and Old Crow Medicine Show. Unlike the many Nashville "vocal events" that are simply contrived marketing ploys, Stuart's collaborations are consistently organic, without a shred of artifice. --Rich Kienzle

Now I am blessed to hear Marty with Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Travis Tritt, Connie Smith, George Jones, BB King, Del McCoury, Loretta Lynn, Lester Flatt and his Fabulous Superlatives. Love the pictures and the notes included also.

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28
This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12
This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

In the grand tradition of the late Roebuck "Pops" Staples--patriarch of the Staple Singers, whose influence permeates this project--Marty Stuart's selection of classic and original spirituals is also his bluesiest release to date. Stuart's guitar carries the familiar Delta sting of his native Mississippi, as the harmony-laden choruses soar toward heaven. A revival of Staples's "Somebody Saved Me" sets the album-opening tone, while a duet with Mavis Staples on her father's "Move Along Train" provides the climactic epiphany. The vocal support of bandmate Harry Stinson--a drummer known as one of Nashville's finest high harmony singers--and the bedrock B-3 organ of Barry Beckett contribute to the music's saving grace. On "Way Down," Stuart sets an inspirational lyric to an insistent guitar progression that blues fans will recognize as "Baby, Please Don't Go," while "I Can't Even Walk (Without Holding Your Hand)" sounds like a timeless country waltz. Even those who don't share the faith will find it tough to resist the power and emotional purity of this music. --Don McLeese

Souls' Chapel.......2007-01-03
A great God centered collection by the shining stars of country music. This is the first religious CD I have ever purchased and I'm very pleased.
If this isn't a revival then you're too far gone!.......2006-01-10
This is easily one of the best albums of 2005 and, in my opinion, the greatest of Marty's Career. Even if you're not a fan of gospel music there is enough tone, taste, harmony, and all around superb musicianship here to keep this in heavy rotation. If you get a chance go see Marty and the Fabulous Superlatives live as they will rock and revive you both all in spectacular Superlatone! Thank God for Marty!

Church-house rock and roll.......2005-11-07
Marty Stuart's new album -- the first on his own label -- is an audacious blend of gospel songs, earthy grooves, and gorgeous vocal harmony the four-time Grammy winner calls "church-house rock and roll." Featuring twin twangy guitars (played by Stuart and the vibey Kenny Vaughan) panned wide in the mix over a rhythm section of bare-bones bass, clickity-clack drums, and subliminal organ, Souls' Chapel has a rollicking, funky feel. That's not surprising: The songs were recorded live at Stuart's house with no baffles, endless overdubs, or neurotic Pro Tools tweaking. Soaked in amp tremolo and spring reverb, the intertwining guitars form the pillars of each song. The instrumental "Souls' Chapel" -- with its throbbing, palm-muted arpeggios, Memphis sliding sixths, burly low-string riffs, double-stop bends, and Curtis Mayfield-inspired hammers -- is a standout. Despite the album's religious lyrics, you needn't be a believer to grasp the 6-string magic oozing from every cut.

Acoustic interplay generates an electric charge as guest musicians join Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives for a concert that puts the pedal to the metal of bluegrass tradition. The hometown crowd at Nashville's Mother Church of Country Music (the same stage on which a 13-year-old Stuart made his Ryman debut accompanying Lester Flatt on the mandolin) spurs the band to peak intensity. With stellar support from fiddler Stuart Duncan and banjoist Charlie Cushman--and a guest appearance by master Dobroist Josh Graves--Stuart and band explore and extend the dynamics of bluegrass, from familiar fare such as "Orange Blossom Special" and "The Great Speckled Bird" through the harmony-laden balladry of "Homesick" and the honky-tonk heartbreak of "The Whiskey Ain't Workin' Anymore" and "Hillbilly Rock," with the latter providing the closing kick to a particularly lively evening. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Solid - but wanted more.......2006-07-29
Marty puts out another solid CD, he's always been one of my favorites. But the CD only has 11 songs, 40-42 minutes. Being a live CD, they could have put another half dozen songs on it.
A sturdy, confident project with raw energy and brash attitude.......2006-05-15
Playing Time - 42:42 -- It's been a number of years since I caught Marty Stuart live at a bluegrass festival at the Frontier Ranch near Columbus, Ohio. At the time, I thought his show was a little too country with its electric guitars and drums, but he was still very well received by the large crowd in attendance. This live bluegrass album is a very welcome acoustic treat that takes the consummate entertainer back to his professional bluegrass roots that first began after he heard Bill Monroe & The Sullivan Family at the Natl. Guard Armory in Jackson, Alabama in 1970. By 1972 (at age 13), the Mississippi native was playing mandolin and lead guitar with Lester Flatt & the Nashville Grass. Lester affectionately called him "Little Marty Stuart." After seven years with Lester, he spent six with Johnny Cash. Marty's also worked with Bob Dylan, Crystal Gayle, Anne Murray, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Jackson, The Sullivan Family, Travis Tritt and many others.
Since joining the Grand Ole Opry in 1992, you might catch Marty with his own band, with "The Opry Bluegrass Band" (with Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill & Earl Scruggs), or with the old-time "Tennessee Mafia Jug Band." The versatile Stuart has found his niche on Hillbilly Rock Road that traverses both bluegrass and country territory. On this album, his signature "Hillbilly Rock" closes the set that took place on July 24, 2003 at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Marty had just finished touring the nation with his "Electric Barnyard Tour," and he'd somewhat forgotten that he'd agreed to doing a bluegrass show at the Ryman. No matter because fiddler Stuart Duncan, banjo-player Charlie Cushman, dobro-player Josh Graves, and emcee Eddie Stubbs were only a few phone calls away and more than willing to join Marty's Fabulous Superlatives with Kenny Vaughan (guitar), Harry Stinson (snare drum), and Brian Glenn (bass). Marty admits to not having the time to rehearse much or get serious about anything so the group agreed to pick and sing "marquee level songs with a built in fun factor." It wasn't planned for the sold-out concert to be recorded, but after the fact Marty felt that it was magical from the first note to the last. Thus, it was decided to share it with us on CD. Maybe that's why "Live at the Ryman" follows so closely after his "Soul's Chapel" and "Badlands" album releases since the summer of 2005.
"Live..." conveys a great deal of bluegrass spirit and drive. Often, the very best `grass is played in jam sessions, and these Nashville cats knew exactly how to light the fire. That's where chutzpah kicks in. Marty was clearly in charge, directing the arrangements, and encouraging his sidekicks. The real treat is in hearing the individual instrumentalists tear up standards and impart their own personalities to the likes of Orange Blossom Special, John Henry, Shuckin' the Corn, Train 45, and The Great Speckled Bird. Some of Stuart's hits such as "The Whiskey Ain't Workin' Anymore" and "Hillbilly Rock" are given hard-drivin' bluegrass treatment. Great pickers also know how to impart drive to slower-tempo'ed tune, and mandolin players should really enjoy Marty's licks on "No Hard Times Blues." I was surprised that the liner notes don't credit Marty with any vocals. The notes are remiss in not acknowledging songwriters. A few little things aside, "Live at the Ryman" is a sturdy, confident project with raw energy and brash attitude. Marty and his buds keep the bluegrass coming at full throttle. Kudos to Les Banks for a fine job recording this show. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
Great Music.......2006-05-07
Marty is a wonderful musician and artist. To hear such great music produced live without the help of the studio and electronics is fabulous. This is what music should be, especially country music. Let's get back to being real.
LIVE AT THE RYMAN.......2006-02-28
Looking for real bluegrass, then you won't like live at the ryman.Marty is taking bluegrass in the same direction that he has taken his country recordings. It should be titled grass that rocks
The Master At Work.......2006-02-16
Marty's music has always been rock and roll, country, bluegrass, honky-tonk, rockabilly and blues all rolled up in one package. These songs are no different. He is a Master musician, artist and singer. The next best thing to being at the Ryman and seeing him live is this record. This is Marty at his best. He gives it his all and you can hear it in his music. Surrounded by other greats such as Stuart Duncan, Charlie Cushman, Josh Graves, Eddie Stubbs and the Superlatives it doesn't get any better than this record. If you want to hear what country music should sound like, buy this record.

Pure Sweet Marty.......2006-01-01
A little rock, a little country, a little bluegrass. That sums up this album. Marty is a country gem. This album is Marty at his best.
Marty Stuart - Hillbilly Rock is excellent.......2005-10-19
I bought this album on a cassette tape when it first came out in 1989 and since then have practically worn it out. I'm buying the CD to replace it. Marty does some mighty fine guitar and mandolin playing on this album. His vocals are excellent too. Make no mistake; this is definitely traditional country music, with Marty's rockabilly style in full force. Marty covers Johnny Cash's "Cry Cry Cry" and does some really good guitar licks on it, it's my favorite song on the CD. I also like "When The Sun Goes Down", a song Marty Stuart and Mark Collie wrote that is reminiscent of Merle Haggard. "Me and Billy The Kid" is a great song too. All of the songs on this CD are keepers and you won't be disappointed with it.
Typical Marty Stuart.......2005-10-05
Brilliant, catchy, and traditional country music. A great album that showcases Marty's awesome sound. The album has the usual rocking, honky-tonk numbers, including: "Cry, Cry, Cry" and the title track "Hillbilly Rock". I found his cover of Johnny Horton's "the Wild One" quite unusual, as I personally find it to be one of Johnny Horton's "worst" songs; but Marty's cover does breathe new life into this 60's number. Gotta say my favorite is the last track "Since I dont Have You", a traditional and beautiful song that is best heard when there's no alcohol within reach. I'd say the album rates just a bit lower than "This One's Gonna Hurt You", but it is well worth your money and I have no doubt you'll wear out the disc.
I'm buying it now........2002-01-19
I love this album and had lost it. Now that I found it here, I'm gonna buy it.
Marty At His Rockabilly Best!.......1999-07-18
I love the album! I don't know anybody else that can jam on a mandolin, like he does. "Me and billy the kid" is great! He pays homage to Johnny in "Cry Cry Cry" , and "Western Girls" Rocks! "Hillbilly Rock" discribes the contents of the album perfecly!

One of the best albums ever.......2006-01-07
This album needs to be included when discussing the top country albums of all times.....definately one of the top 5 of the '90's. With the exception of "The Pilgrim", this is Marty's finest album. While "The Pilgrim" is by far his best work, it is a concept album much like an opera. "This One's Gonna Hurt You" is just plain, straight forward, hardcore country/honkytonk/hillbilly music, with no apologies. Everyone knows that Marty is one of the premiere guitarists (or any stringed instrument, for that matter), but this album showcases his voice. The opening number "Me & Hank...." is an oration of a conversation backed by the finest Tennessee-style blues, but at it's end, simply breaks into a country standard that will blow you away (High on a Mountain Top). Them Travis Tritt is introduced to sing the title track with Marty; here was a great duet. The album has a few rockabilly/blues based tunes, but the highlights remain the true-blue hillbilly sounds, such as Marty's rendition of Charley Pride's (and Dolly & Porter's) "Just Between You & Me". "Hey Baby" is a masterpiece, plain & simple, yet recalls the psychobilly sound of the late '60's. An appearance by Johnny Cash in "Doin' My Time" is also included, and folks, if Marty's guitar work on this Cash standard doesn't torment your brain, you are already dead. The last great song on this album (and they're all good) is "The King of Dixie"; Marty's rocking tribute to Hank. Yes, Country Music's Golden Era was indeed the 50's-60's, but thanks to folks like Dwight and Marty, we can have the modern "Classics"....and this is a Classic album.
what a dream.......2006-01-07
i'm kinda new to marty stuart and country music in general, but this is really neat stuff. i've listened to it three, maybe four times in a row now and it still has my head ringing like somebody whacked me with a two-by-four. his guitar work is great and the concept of the album is sheer genius. although, when i go to heaven, i won't be looking up hank williams. pickup on it! it rocks, like your favorite bar jukebox right there in your house. i know this one will be in the 50+ disc player for the entire summer season for barbques and evening entertainment.
Marty's "All Things Must Pass", Country Style.......2005-12-19
Too many CD's on Amazon get 5-star ratings because dedicated fans write favorable reviews.
This one deserves 5 stars and more.
Marty Stuart, a traditional Country historian, musician and philosopher came up with a CD that touched on but did not rip off all the best of the country genres. He even went as far as to have a contemporary star (Travis Tritt) appear for the title tune and back that up with a rousing duet with former father-in-law Johnny Cash on another, Doin' My Time. You've got to hear Marty's band drop the octave for The Man In Black on this tune, it's classic.
This CD rocks and rolls, it has that back-country spirit, ballads, hard-drivin' step-out guitars playing honky-tonk riffs, you name it. Unfortunately, since Marty declines to wear a hat his imprint in country music is still overshadowed by the Hat Acts and you know who I mean. But they don't have more talent, they don't play a guitar/Dobro/mandolin better, and they don't have an all-good-songs CD like this, either. He sure made me a part of his "Honky-Tonk Crowd", I'll tell you. On the other hand, like George Harrison, topping this one is never gonna be easy! Buy this CD and play it for your "don't-like-country-music" friends....
Fabulous Marty.......2003-11-14
This is Marty's best work (Pre "The Pilgrim". Now That's Country is pure Marty. A little rockabilly, a little country. His guitar sounds and ability to rock his country sets him apart from the pack. His duet with Travis Tritt is wonderful fun. Just Between You and Me is nice and easy to listen to. Marty's voice is sweet and sincere. Hey Baby is also pure Marty at his best. Other than "The Pilgrim" this is Marty's best work.
A Masterpiece from start to finish........2002-05-01
One of the best country Cd's ever made. So good infact, it sort of ruined Marty's recording career, as he will never be able to top this one. Classic country music. I generally can't stand Travis Tritt, but EVEN he sounds good here. I can't believe this didn't sell millions. This was the climax of the "Hillbilly Rock" chapter of Marty's career. Unfortunatly he is still trying to write new pages in that book... Lets move on...

His country credibility long established by his tenures with Lester Flatt and Johnny Cash, Marty Stuart has always shown respect for the music's roots while also embracing the Nudie-suited, higher-the-hair-closer-to-God, show-biz attitude of a Porter Wagoner. On Country Music, his Columbia debut and first new album in four years, the chameleon-like Stuart has come up with a great, eclectic set of tunes and performances. He kicks things off in high style with "A Satisfied Mind," a cover of Wagoner's biggest hit, here given a rolling, Waylon Jennings-style arrangement. Stuart includes a respectful but nonetheless dead-on impersonation of the Man in Black on the lesser-known Cash tune "Walls of a Prison." On "Farmer's Blues," a new classic he penned with wife Connie Smith, it is hard to tell where Stuart leaves off and guest vocalist Merle Haggard begins--not a bad thing. What is more distinctive is the "Marty Party" good spirits he brings to honky-tonkers like "By George" and "Too Much Month (At the End of the Money)." Country Music does contain a few missteps: a heavy-handed (and botched) attempt at incorporating hip-hop into country ("If There Ain't There Ought'a Be") could have been more organic and he could have featured the vocal and instrumental accomplishments of his Fabulous Superlatives a bit more. Still, Stuart reminds us that country need not be "alt" to be exciting. --Michael Ross

Fair at best.......2006-04-13
I never thought I'd write a "less than stellar" review of Marty Stuart, but this is Marty's worst album, and lacks any real feeling or drive. Of course, Marty's instrumental work remains absolutely flawless....if it has strings, Marty is the king. But the selection and composition of these songs are definately not up to par. The first single, a different take on Porter Wagoner's classic "Satisfied Mind" is actually quite good, and misleadingly fills the listener with anticipation of like-minded songs to follow. But, it aint so. Seems like quite a bit of filler material here (perhaps previously discarded tracks), although there is a fine duet with Merle Haggard, "Farmer's Blues" and a tongue-in-cheek number, "Too Much Month". I give it a C-. Let's hope there are no repeats of this effort.

This was the wrong album. I ordered Marty Stuart's "Honky
Tonkin's What I Do Best"
You do not have to be a country & western fan to like this........2004-03-12
Although the Marty Stewart fans should have this album already, others may not have heard much about this album since it does not seem to be getting much airplay. Marty's music is thoroughly modern, yet is not crossover that abandons its country roots. Although I am primarily a rock fan, I am sure that this album that would be well received by anyone who likes good music. I currently have five Marty Stuart albums and this album has to be the best Marty Stuart yet. For those not yet familiar with Marty Stuart, this is the "introductory" album to buy. The disk's sonics are great (Columbia knows a few things about making a good recording) and the release currently includes a DVD with video clips, background on the album, and interview with Marty, who describes what was going on in his mind. Well worth the investment.
The Marty Party is BACK!.......2003-11-24
I just received my copy of "Country Music". I think it is one of the best recordings Marty Stuart has ever made. I've loved him since I was in high school. Now I sit back and watch my children play while listening to this great music collection. His first single "If There Ain't There Ought'a Be" reminds me of the fun loving songs from his "Tempted" and "Marty Party" CDs. The song "Here I Am" is a sultry song that makes me want to sit on the front porch late at night cuddling with my man. "By George" makes you want to get up off that porch and dance as cars drive by! As a fan and lover of country music, Marty Stuart is one of many musicians out there that have stayed true to their roots. His compassion for his music and life really comes through in this CD. It's a must for every "country music" fan. If there was a 10 star rating, I'd give it! Enjoy!
If Country Music Ain't This Good...It Ought To Be...........2003-09-24
Marty follows up his opus "The Pilgrim" with a perfect blend of country-rock. Some will criticize that he did not follow up "The Pilgrim" with a more serious, reflective project. HOGWASH. The Pilgrim was a once in a lifetime experience. "Country Music" is Marty at his hillbilly rock best.

Hillbilly rock at it's best.......2003-07-06
If you like Marty Stuart, this is the record for you. All the songs are great. You can't beat Marty for first rate guitar and mandolin playing - he is a Master. He cares about his music and its shows in his work. Great vocals, great guitar and great country music, you can't ask for any more than that.
Rockin Country.......2002-11-24
I like all kinds of American music. Jazz, Blues, Rock, Fusion etc. and I also like good country.
This is good country. It is clean, tasty, great musicianship and it rocks. Put it in the box and pump up the volume.

Marty Stuart has always been a terrific singer and picker (as well as a smart, ardent country music historian and collector), but only rarely has he written songs worthy of his other talents. However, on The Pilgrim, a concept album that tells a true story from Stuart's Mississippi hometown, he has finally found a theme to inspire a whole collection of substantial songs. The title character falls in love with a woman at work, discovers too late she's married, watches her husband kill himself, flees the town for years of drunken wandering, and finally finds redemption in religion and marriage. Here are the great themes of hillbilly music--infidelity, violence, rambling, alcoholism, church and family--wrapped up in an ongoing narrative. It's not surprising that Stuart can get satisfying results from this material when he reaches back to older musical styles and such guest performers as Ralph Stanley, George Jones, Johnny Cash, and Earl Scruggs. More impressive is the way he makes the same themes work with the cranked-up, drum-driven country-rock of modern Nashville, which seems to have forgotten how gripping the dark side of human drama can be. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
beautiful music that's awe-inspiring.......2007-01-26
I have traveled all over, met many world leaders and am blessed with a very fulfilling career and beautiful family. Yet I didn't realize how incomplete my life was until I heard this album for the first time. With the exception of watching F/A 18s take off and land on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, nothing else brings such a lump of joy and awe to my throat as listening to The Pilgrim. If I could be buried with the song "The Greatest Love of all Time" piped into my coffin, I would truly be in heaven.
Perfection.......2005-09-22
This work is a masterpiece. It's also one of the most underated albums of all time!
10 Stars .......2005-09-10
This is absolute perfection. I grew up on traditional country music in the late 60's and early '70's, and was the most grateful person alive when Marty, Randy, Dwight, and Miss Patty Loveless came on the scene. "The Pilgrim" has got to be in the top 3 albums of the '90's; and I'll go as far as saying it's the best Marty Stuart release. I cant recall ever hearing guitar picking and mandolin playing such as this. Imagine taking the top bluegrass pickers and throwing them together with Don Rich, Carl Perkins, and Lester Flatt. Then take the sounds of the mountains and trainyards and combine them with Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton, and throw in a little thunder and lightning for good measure. Then, you may start to come close to this album. The guest vocals of Ralph Stanley, Emmy Lou Harris, and George Jones are brilliant, but Marty's duet with Pam Tillis will knock your socks off. There should be a push to re-release this album and get it airplay. All I can say, is until you've heard this album, you haven't experienced genius in country music. My highest recommendation!
Brilliant!!!.......2004-07-23
I'm a little biased when it comes to this album having spent six months of my life with Marty and his band recording and mixing it back in 1998 (when I was a scared 26 year old kid). This is simply a brilliant album and it will be a highlight of my career.
Marty spent several years creating the story and writing the music for the Pilgrim unlike most country records that are factory safe and produced by teams of executives that are as far removed from their audience as a Three Stooges short is from Schindler's List. In a world where Keanu Reeves is rewarded for his ability to say the word "whoa" I guess there's just no room on country radio for things other than fluff written by work-a-day songwriters churning out two or three songs a day while their fresh out of college publishers schedule their writing appointments all in an attempt to meet song quotas and make music that anyone under the age of four months could enjoy. Sounds like a perfect way to make art. HA!
Sorry about that. I feel better now.
Marty played all his famous guitars (the acoustic guitar was owned by Hank Williams, Sr. and Johnny Cash and is worth well over a million dollars). Such amazing tones and guitar playing are all over this CD. It's the kind of thing you can listen to under headphones and really dig into to uncover guitar parts.
There was a line of Marty's celebrity friends wanting to be a part of this album such as Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, George Jones, Ralph Stanley, Earl Scruggs, Mike Campbell (of Tom Petty's band) and Pam Tillis to name just a few.
Tracks of interest include Reasons, Hobo's Prayer, The Pilgrim (Act III), Crow and Harlan County. On a small technical note, Harlan County and Intermission were recorded live through a single microphone (a Telefunken U-47 through a Neve 1073 mic pre) and were nominated for several Grammy awards.
This is simply a brilliant album and everyone involved with its creation is proud to have been there. Buy this now before it goes out of print, never to be released again.
Uneven, but great overall.......2004-03-18
I am not your typical country and western fan, so to me the album gets off to an odd start musically and its numerous and somewhat jarring "interlude" songs did not thrill me either. (I am sure the hardcore country fans will not understand this, although the fact that the sales never really took off confirms that I am not an isolated case.) However, if you take the time to listen to the entire recording, you will discover it contains a great deal of truly great music. Ten songs are so good that I cannot pick a favorite: Sometimes the Pleasure's Worth the Pain; Reasons; Red, Red Wing and Cheatin' Songs; Hobo's Prayer; Goin' Nowhere Fast; The Observations Of A Crow; The Greatest Love Of All Time and the instrumental reprise; Draggin' Around These Chains Of Love; and even Outro (the opposite of Intro--get it?). There is a great deal of enjoyable listening in this album, and it would be a mistake to pass it up. I just wish Marty made it a little less "artsy"--the only reason I reduced the rating to four stars.

With this concept album, Marty Stuart pays tribute to the Sioux culture of what is now South Dakota and to the inspiration of Johnny Cash, whose band once included Stuart and who also developed a strong affinity for American Indian traditions. Though it's hard to fault Badlands' good intentions and pointed social commentary, much of it is stronger thematically than musically. Spoken-word interludes that provide transitions might not bear repeated listenings, while the wordless "Hotchkiss Gunner's Lament" (with Stuart's wife, Connie Smith, providing atmospheric vocals) succumbs to new-age romanticism. Yet music and message achieve a powerful synthesis on "Broken Promise Land," where the urgency of the performance bristles with righteous indignation, and a revival of Cash's little-heard "Big Foot." From Custer and Crazy Horse through Sitting Bull and Wounded Knee, Stuart offers a musical history lesson of tragedy than cannot be ignored or denied and hope that still glimmers. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Badlands cd.......2007-05-12
This was a birthday gift for my husband who is Shawnee/Anishnabe and has a strong connection to his Lakota brothers. He was quite moved by the words and music of Marty Stuart, an accomplished musician. His treatment of the sensitive nature of both historical and current treatment of Native Americans is exemplary. It is obvious that he has empathy and understanding for the First Americans.
Amazing album.......2006-05-13
An extraordinary and evocative album. The songs are first-rate: rich, varied, and beautifully done. It's a concept album that truly works, carrying you beyond the music and into another corner of the world. You can hear the compassion and understanding that went into the creation of the album but it's not pedantic or overly didactic (like I'm being by using those words).
This is my first Marty Stuart album, bought sort of by chance and sort of because of a great review in the All Music Guide. I'm not someone who typically listens to a lot of 'country music', but this transcends its genre, like the best music tends to do, because of its subject matter, the songwriting craft, and the soul behind the writing. The All Music Guide review said something about it raising the bar for country music albums, but I would say it does this for other genres of music as well.
It succeeded in making me more compassionately aware of its subject matter as well as convincing me as a musician and music afficianado that I've got to see what else I've been missing with this Marty Stuart guy...
Badlands = Goodstuff.......2006-03-24
Marty Stuart so far has proven to be an artist who's cd's can be bought without first hearing - they are always good. This cd is no exception. Marty and his band the Fabulous Superlatives are some of the greatest guitar based musicians on the planet. The subject matter for the disc is moving, and important. A must have.
Marty Gets It Right.......2006-03-12
While many people are not fond of concept albums, this is one that gets its message across quite clearly. Marty Stuart has created a masterpiece of storytelling with a wonderful mixture of musical styles that is a definite "must-own" for fans of Stuart or anyone interested in the plight of the American Indian. (Yes, that is the more accepted term that most of us prefer, rather than Native American.) Stuart's vision encompasses both past and present tragedies and presents it in an enjoyable musical form. The title track is a clever, driving piece that could easily find an audience were it allowed major airplay. Anyone not moved by the cover of Johnny Cash's "Big Foot" has no compassion in them. The other tracks weave a sad tale of poverty, deceit, and broken promises that one must experience firsthand to truly understand, but listening to Marty's musical narrative is a good start.
Pilamaya, Marty Stuart. Thank you.
A flawed Beauty, a gift from Marty.......2005-11-08
Today there the majority of lyrics express nothing more important then "shake your booty," or "I love you, I don't love you." There is nothing wrong with these lyrics but when they dominate radio, TV and CDs then it is evidence of the dumbing down of contemporary culture. This has been especially true in the genre of country music.
One of the musician's trying to reverse this trend is Marty Stuart, this cd is a prime example.
At their best, Marty's lyrics and new and fresh in describing the long term suffering of the Indian. At times, in their quest to speak plainly, they enter into the realm of the chiche and lost their power. This is often found in the readings and especially in the song "Three Chiefs." Yet, a flawed beauty and truth are found in these passages.
I hope he does a cd someday on the positive aspects of Indian life amidst the suffering.
It is important that we do not forget this suffering is still among us, and needs to be addressed. Many of us have a tendency to forget, and let others do the work of righting the wrongs. Marty won't let us forget, and we own him thanks.
By the way, the music is great and is in the Kick Butt Stuart Groove! :)
