This is the epitome of budget CDs: 12 shorts songs, 32 minutes, and two completely blank pages masquerading as liner notes. (Ironically, the only credit is for the art director, Chuck Young.) The only way you know who's playing is when Martin calls them out on the instrumentals "Taylor Made Sally Good" and "Foggy Mountain Breakdown." These remakes of his Decca hits probably come from his 1970s Gusto work, and they find Martin still belting it out in hard-driving style. Martin's howling tenor leads through romping versions of "Rollin' In My Sweet Baby's Arms," "Freeborn Man," and "Sunny Side of the Mountain." "Uncle Pen" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky" come from his tenure with Bill Monroe. Strong performances, and it's cheap, too. --Marc Greilsamer

A Giant of the Early Times.......2002-05-10

Jimmy Martin stands as one of the giants at the beginning of bluegrass music. But this CD of "His Greatest Bluegrass Hits", unfortunately is (for the most part) covers of other 'giants' bluegrass hits. They are decent renditions but recorded years ago and you can tell. This CD would be good for Martin's fans or fans of the history of the music. it does have a standout instrumental in "Big Country".

There's Only One Jimmy Martin.......2005-11-26

Here is a fine introduction to the King of Bluegrass at an affordable price. Jimmy Martin has to be the most colorful character of bluegrass music, and in my opinion, puts Bill Monroe to shame. While Jimmy plays traditional bluegrass music, there is absolutely NOTHING traditional with his presentation....it's been said that he's the Jerry Garcia of Bluegrass; I'm not sure how accurate that is, but Jimmy's fans are hardcore, and so is his music. This is just plain unabashed, true-blue, in your face, bluegrass. This recording is from King Records, and although a few of the hits are remakes, they are well recorded and well worth your listen. Included are his signature songs: "Widow Maker" and "Sunny Side Of the Mountain", as well as the traditional "Knoxville Girl" and "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". I just hope that someday the grand Ole Opry will forgive him and induct this legend. For less than $6, you can own a piece of history from a "one-of-a-kind".

What more can be said; Jimmy Martin is the "king of bluegrass". The twang of his voice is pure and soothing as mountain water on a hot day. This one is for all the hillbillies across the applachian hills and mountains. A true bluegrass pioneer and legend. This album is definitely a must to own.
