Marty Stuart's style is unique and unmistakable - his creative capacity is quite impressing - great melodies, excellent instrumental and a strong beat....better, impossible !! and this CD is no exception .

A good album.......2006-05-14

This album is not Marty's best, but it is a solid effort with some great songs and instrumental work. Not on par with "This One's gonna Hurt You", but definately better than "Country Music". The best numbers here are a duet with Travis Tritt (Honky Tonkin's What I do Best) and "Country Girls", with the crowning achievement being "Thanks to You".....interestingly enough, these three songs are the first three tracks on the CD. There is an interesting interlude with a conversation with none other than the great Jimmy Martin (and the subject of coon dogs), but the song it precludes is absolute crap, not worthy of Marty's name (much less his voice) "The Mississippi MudCat and Sister Sheryl Crow". "Rocket Ship" is another disappointment, but there are enough other good material to make this CD worthwhile. I give it a B-.

Marty always great.......2004-10-25

While not Marty's best work, you always have to love him. He is a fabulous musician and always entertaining. The video of Travis and Marty singing Honky Tonkin's What I Do Best is Marty & Travis at their best. Marty has great moves and style. He is one of the few performers who bridge the past with the future. Love the picture on the cover, classic Marty.

Sorry to disapoint anyone........2002-05-01

This sounds like Marty has ran out of ideas, so he tries to be funny. Actually I love Marty, but he needs to try something new. I know how much he loves traditional country, so do I, but where is HIS voice here? Trust me, go out and get "Hillbilly Rock," "Tempted" and "This One's Gonna Hurt You," and just let this one die quietly.

honky tonk heaven.......2001-03-29

This wild and fun CD (with some honey soft moments) is a gem. The title track, a duet with Travis Tritt, is sensational...they're fabulous together...and it's followed by the driving "Country Girls". "Thanks to You" is a love song with a strong beat and sweet lyrics: "My tired and hurtin' heart ~ that once was broke and torn apart is all new ~ thanks to you"...another love song, "Shelter from the Storm", is really beautiful: "I will stand beside you ~ through this whole life long ~ to love you and to be your ~ shelter in the storm".

Marty wrote 8 of the 11 songs on this CD, and his wit has never been sharper than in "The Mississippi Mudcat and Sister Sheryl Crow". It starts out with a hilarious intro featuring "King" Jimmy Martin and his country music coon dogs and beagle hounds, and never lets up.

The musicianship on this recording is top notch throughout, and the booklet insert excellent, with easy to read lyrics and info, and some nice photos. This is a tasty and terrific slice of country pie, served up by a super performer, musician, singer and songwriter.

This Texas blues avatar actually began recording in 1958 yet never made inroads until he signed with Rounder in 1981. The 12 searing cuts on this set (a budget-friendly alternative to the Texas Twister compilation) are culled from five of Clyde's 1980s Rounder efforts, and they offer a wonderful glimpse of his horn-driven, jazz-inflected, propulsive blues. As a guitarist, Copeland had much of the fluency of his idol T-Bone Walker, but he added a touch of B.B. King's emotionalism and Albert Collins's bite. As a vocalist, his pained, growling delivery is so cutting that it may even hurt your throat. Copeland also deserves acclaim as a songwriter (all dozen songs here are his own) who always found a new way to interpret the blues' classic themes. --Marc Greilsamer

Finally back in print!.......2004-07-15

I paid $50 for a used copy of the original Twin-Tone release of this CD, and it was worth every penny. It's one of the best albums by maybe the best rock'n'roll band out there. In theory, Honky Tonkin' is one of the Mekons' famed cowpunk records, and the country strains certainly show through. However, this record shows the Mekons gravitating towards the more punk/folk hybrid of "Curse of the Mekons", "Journey to the End of Night", and "OOOH!". The highlights of the album for me are Rico Bell singing on a brilliant cover of Gram Parson's "Sleepless Nights" and Tom Greenhalgh and Sally Timms (or is it Michelle Shocked?) on "Prince of Darkness", the last cut on the album. Other standouts are "Hole in the Ground" and "Charlie Cake Park", but every track is great.

Anyway, stop reading this review and go buy the CD already!

All the songs are sung by The Drunk Cowboy Band, not various artists. The tracks are more Southern Rock sounding than Classic Country though. Should appeal to fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Allman Brothers Band...

borderline ripoff album.......2005-05-22

NOT various artists as advertised...all sounds like the same band, NO LIST OF BANDS! Doesn't come close to some of the other countrified Beatles albums...disappointing.

Honky Tonkin' The Beatles- A Really Fun Listen.......2005-02-21

I've listened to this CD over and over and it really is a fun listen. The singers and musicians are great, and it is amazing to hear some Beatle standards, a la honky tonk, with new sound technology. Whoever thought of doing this concept CD must be just a little crazy, maybe a crazy cowboy, with a touch of musical genius thrown in. In short, I highly recommend this CD.
