Back in the 1950s and '60s, when George Gershwin was taken for granted more than he was respected, Leonard Bernstein was one of his only champions in high-classical-music circles, and to judge from these recordings, he got away with a lot. He would seem to be attempting to out-swagger Arthur Fiedler in the jazzier passages, but on the plus side, what can sound freeze-dried with some conductors has a welcome heat here, especially in An American in Paris. That piece receives one of its best-ever recordings and sounds great in the bright, clear recording venue, Brooklyn's Hotel St. George. However, Bernstein's tempo extremes tax the cohesion of Rhapsody in Blue. And Grofé's Grand Canyon Suite receives a sympathetic performance, though the acoustics of the Lincoln Center recording venue are so cavernous and diffuse you'd think it was recorded in the location of the title. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Gershwin Recordings.......2007-06-27

I first heard the recording of "An American in Paris" on the radio, and I immediately concluded that this was a recording I needed to order. I ordered this CD solely for the recording of "An American in Paris", everything else was a bonus. "An American in Paris" was worth the price of the whole CD, but so is "Rhapsody in Blue", which I believe could easily be the definitive recording of this great work. Grofé's "Grand Canyon Suite" is a pleasant bonus, but not the substance of this recording. I would highly recommend this recording.

4 out of 5 stars Gershwin fan.......2007-04-01

I am, definitely, absolutely and totally sold on Gershwin, so there is no question as to whether this CD is good or not, since it has Gershwin's two "hits", Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris, it is good and enjoyable. I only feel that the Ferde Grofé part, though outstanding, is too overpowering vis-a-vis the Gershwin part. But it is definitely an OK CD, no question about it.

3 out of 5 stars Sorry - it's not the best........2007-03-13

This recording is okay in many respsects...but many people (yours truly) find it lacking in something. Dare I say the interpretation is slightly off?

Sorry - there are better out there.

5 out of 5 stars Two of LB's quintessential recordings.......2007-01-09

This bids fair to be the most famous recording of American music ever made, so it's strange for the Amazon reviewer to condescend to LB's readings of Gerhswin, only to call it one of his best. The more renowned recording is Rhapsody in Blue with Bernstein at the piano and a pickup orchestra--no doubt recruited form the NY Phil.--that's bigger than a jazz band but still lean. (Arthur Fiedler's version, also famous, is far more square.) If anything, the American in Paris recording is better; I can't imagine a more vibrant reading. The orchestration is more symphonic than the Rhapsody, but LB makes sure that the rhythms swing. A ollector could stop and buy no other readings, but the ones by Andre Previn on EMI have updated sound and also come across with jazz spirit. The filler here is Grofe's once-famous Grand Canyon Suite, a negligible piece of fluff with truding donkeys and a thunderstorm. LB does it proud, however; one wonders if he even had to rehearse it--probably not.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant is the word!.......2006-11-29

No other director in the history has achieved such expression level and plain domain of the idiomatic lexicon of George Gershwin as Bernstein did it. There are two main reason for it, his enormous talent and his condition as pianist.

So, Gershwin may be very grateful because of that because for the posterity , the future newcomers in music will have the chance to analyze, scrutinize and explore all the factors that made possible this testimonial.

Totally recommended.

Album Description

OK horn fans, here it is…one the world's esteemed chamber groups teams up with one of the world's most storied horn sections for a CD that is-literally and figuratively-a blast! This recording is by any measure a virtuoso performance; these nine guys, all gifted in their own right, combine their talents to create an end result that is nothing short of breathtaking. From commissioned works to clever arrangements, the American Horn Quartet and the Horns of the New York Philharmonic tear through this music with a verve and flair rarely heard these days. In short, if you're a fan of the horn, you must have this recording!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Horn Album.......2006-03-27

The hornists are simply fantastic. Many segments of the music thrill me, nearly take my breath away. Although many pieces represent their diverse skills I would love to have a presentation of more of the fanfare type pieces, the type which show the glory and power of the horn. Love the Ewazen piece. Love the Irish pieces. Thought the recording was a little muffled. Had to turn my stereo up too loud to get the full effect. Over all one great horn album.

5 out of 5 stars Farewell to Red Castle.......2004-01-11

Take 9 is the best CD I own. My favorite song is the second on the track. Farewell to Red Castle. It's the most incredible peice, especially with 9 horns playing it. It is fun and exciting along with slow and beautiful. it's a great representation of the entire collection of Take 9's songs. wOOt!

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Recording.......2003-09-09

This is an awesome recording combining 9 great players. The music is beautiful, but still showy, an excellent combination for this group of horns. Overture to Candide is incredible, and the Grand Canyon Suites is one of the greatest horn recording I have ever heard. This recording belongs in any horn players library.

3 out of 5 stars Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24

For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the First Volume.......2005-08-04

There is a great collection of music to be found here. There are many great renditions. The "2001, a Space Odyssey Fanfare" was outstanding. "Book of Days" from "Far and Away" had a very unique approach. I recommend this one deeply, oh yes I do, by far and away!

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 2.......2005-06-17

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' treatment of film scores on this second tribute to Hollywood are somewhat more pleasing than Volume I. The selections are more intriguing and demonstrate a more positive approach to film scores and their value as true musical art forms. There is quite a diverse representation of music here. The incredibly powerful main title to MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (Bronislaw Kaper) juxtaposed with the bittersweet and romantic love theme to SPARTACUS (Alex North) and the intimately tender love theme to FRIENDLY PERSUASION (Dimitri Tiomkin) are masterfully achieved. I have never been that enamored with this CD's 20-bit digital recording but it has grown on me. Still, I highly recommend and enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Sheila from Savannah, Georgia.......2005-01-15

I love this cd. It is the greatest. Moonglow and Midnight Cowboy are my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars A great album.......2001-01-28

Erich Kunzel, once again comes through with another terrific album of movie music. On this album you will find preludes, themes and main title music from some of Hollywood's most loved movies. Films from as early as 1936's "Modern Times", through to 1992's "Far and Away", are represented here. The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra are as wonderful as ever, and the 20-bit digital sound system makes for unequalled sound quality. A pleasing highlight for me, is the wonderful "Moonglow" which starts off track 5. The jazz trio of piano, bass and drums eventually is joined by the orchestra for the theme from "Picnic". Then we have the beautiful waltz from "Around the world in eighty days". With the wonderful accordion solo, you can imagine being on a merry-go-round. This is truly a beautiful album...a must for lovers of orcestral music.

5 out of 5 stars THE GRAND CANYON SUITE - An American Classic.......2003-11-26

___________________________________________________________________________________

This is an abolutely masterful rendition of The Grand Canyon Suite! By far the best I've ever heard. Erich Kunsel is to be highly praised for this masterpiece. The recording quality is magnificent and it comes with two versions of the thunderstorm movement; a traditional one with instruments only and an utterly fantastic one with actual thunderstorm recordings which is extremely well done. What a wonderful American classic! I venture to say that anyone listening to this performance could not help but develop a much greater appreciation of Ferde Grofe and the musical heritage he left this country.

(I bought the album for the Suite alone, but the Porgy and Bess is no less skillfully performed and it makes a noteworthy coupling.)

4 out of 5 stars Grofe.......2006-06-26

Have mixed feelings over this one. Technically the recording is excellent (DDD) but I always wonder why mix a Grofe recording with Gershwin. Maybe it's because they start with "G". A much better redition is Angel's "Great American Grofe" with all Grofe cuts although recorded originally in the mid '50s.

5 out of 5 stars The Grand Canyon is our mental frontier.......2002-08-05

Thank you Ferde Grofé. One has to have visited the Grand Canyon to capture the grandeur and power of this music. One has to have walked along the chasm and seen the sun rise from the deepest depth of the tortured cliffscape to feel the beauty of the music. Nature is so grand, so big, so powerful, so forbidding that we can only remain breathless in front of it, in front of its complex and yet simple mechanisms, its beautiful sunrise than brings the full strength of the millenium-old cliffs and of a aeon-old river at the very bottom of an abyss. One has to have seen the sun going down over the canyon, the darkness climbing from the river and yet falling from the sky, the chilly night suddenly surrounding us with its luminescent draperies little by little adorned with millions of starry gems and brilliant stars high above our heads, to feel the immensity of the world and our minute tininess. And the cowboys, or rather pioneers, on the trail going up the canyon to some promised and yet unknown land are so helpless and yet so thrilled by the amazing beauty they discover in front of their eyes that the braying of an ass is both ridiculous and revealing. We feel so small in front of this tortured reality that our dream is nearly nullified. But man is more than his fear of some shadow or his fright of some storm. He is able to conquer nature and the wilderness if he is able to step into it, to live with it, to climb up the ladder to the gigantic dream of getting accepted by nature itself. And this measureless nature keeps quite a few surprises in its vast pockets. The more or less innocent clouds can burst into some fiery and demential storm. But the smallest spark of humanity each one of us contains can grow into some vine that can conquer this demented nature and bring it to some useful application. There too one has to have been there to feel that strength that surges into us coming directly up and down from the immensity and unforgettable lack of proportions and humility that nature itself is wide and wild enough to contain. One is never crushed by any superior circumstances if one is able to inflate oneýs heart to the very limitlessness of those circumstances. And that is human ambition, that is human vision, that is what America stands for us, even if we call it at times with another name. Any man has this unconquerable frontier in the deepest depth of his dreamlike consciousness and most unconscious dreams.

Dr Jacques COULARDEAU

5 out of 5 stars An Exploration Of Musical Americana Via Detroit.......2002-04-17

Under the direction of Antal Dorati in the late 1970s and 1980s, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra was very much involved with 20th century music, particularly that of American composers. This recording allows us a glimpse into our Amercian music spirit via works that are sometimes dismissed as pops concert items.

Dorati and his orchestra give us a great performance of the Gershwin "Porgy And Bess Symphonic Picture", as arranged by Robert Russell Bennett. It captures many of that great American opera's classic themes brilliantly. It is the most popular symphonic imagination of the opera, superceding even Gershwin's, and the Detroit Symphony's performance shows why.

But the orchestra really shines on Ferde Grofe's celebrated "Grand Canyon Suite." Grofe knew a lot about orchestration, having been a violist with the L.A. Philharmonic in the 1920's and being the one responsible for the orchestration of Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue." This suite, which premiered in 1931, captures America's greatest natural trench in all its splendid glory, and comes up with some spectacular moments, including "The Painted Desert" and the extremely vivid "Cloudburst" movement.

This recording of two of the greatest examples of musical Americana comes highly recommended, not just for the works themselves but for the way the Detroit Symphony performs them. Not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin and Grofe: an Introduction.......2001-12-19

If ever a recording could so poigniantly express the abilities of two of the greatest American composers, it is this one. Under Dorati's direction, the DSO shines in this marvelous album. I was first introduced to both Gershwin and Grofe through this recording. I was so intrigued simply by its name that I felt I HAD to listen to the "Grand Canyon Suite." Little did I know, there was another jewel right before my eyes. Thus began my love for Gershwin's music, as he has ranked at the top of my list ever since. Both preformances are simply astounding, and to this day, this is still one of my favorite recordings to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars This is one deep canyon.......2001-09-11

If ever a recording was made that demonstrated the ability to reproduce a certain quality of sound this is one of them. I never fail to be impressed by the capture of the sound of the DSO in this "Grand Canyon". I think it way ahead of the competition in evoking the vastness of the scene. You need a good speaker system to do justice to it. The Porgy and Bess" is excellent; here is a big orchestra that knows how to count and so they sound perfectly at home with the music. I cringe when I hear an orchestra of hundreds playing something with a heavy handed drummer leading them on. All in all, a great recording!.

4 out of 5 stars An American Picnic.......2002-08-11

I have three of the Dinner Classics. "Dinner For Two" "Romance"
and "A Cocktail Party" All are wonderful cd's and I would like to find more, other than what is listed here. "An American Picnic" is good but I like "Dinner For Two" the best.

5 out of 5 stars Worth It.......1999-11-29

This album is one of the "must haves" in the great "Masterworks Dinner Classics" series. Beautiful!

3 out of 5 stars Average.......1999-05-03

This CD is only average as a whole. It's selection of music includes most of the great traditionally American anthems and songs, but totally ignores others. The music was mostly too loud to my ears also, and I did not like the modernist renditions of some of them. "America The Beautiful" in particular was far too heavy handed and operatic to be enjoyable. Also, just so you know -- there are a total of 18 songs on this CD; I don't know why Amazon only lists 5.

Amazon.com essential recording

This is a disc for the ages: here is American music, performed with mid-century flair, a moment never to be recaptured. Bernstein had an unparalleled feel for Rhapsody in Blue, and in this recording he brought it all home, doing full justice to the still-fresh, racy, moody, spontaneous, evocative score. His performance of the solo has a smoky, sultry jazziness to it, along with a brash exuberance; there is touching tenderness in the lullaby, a riveting dynamism in the fast pages. As constituted for this recording, the Columbia Symphony consisted of some superb pickup players. An American in Paris gets a wonderfully energetic and bracing performance, one that strikes a deft balance between intimacy and grandeur. The old New York Philharmonic incandescence comes through in every bar. The account of Grofé's Grand Canyon Suite is still the finest in the catalog. The sound has excellent presence and impact, although in the recording of the Rhapsody the violins lack bite, there is breakup in the extreme high range, and one get the sensation of "hole in the center" stereo. --Ted Libbey

4 out of 5 stars Showcase.......2007-01-21

This album shows Gershwin, Grofe, Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic in characteristic form. Exemplary. Bernstein conducts with swagger and bravado. While I prefer Leonard Slatkin's "Rhapsody in Blue" and "American in Paris", I have lived a better life for having heard Bernstein's, too. I've listened to this recording many times.

1 out of 5 stars "Blue" from The Rhapsody".......2003-03-25

I disliked the somewhat slowertempo, especially the piano's.I was furious over the disgustingmicrophone placement during thethe recording and/or remastering!End result: I had to turn volumneup during piano solo and when fullorchestra converged ... `KA-BOOM !!

5 out of 5 stars An underrated pianist captured in recording to be treasured.......2002-09-02

Bernstein was a vastly underrated pianist. Here, the subtlety of his handling of the smallest semi-quavers is arresting. There are so many moments that catch the ear because of the directness and honesty of the playing. This is no standard bravura performance. Bernstein has no need to pound the cross-hand octaves or over-exaggerate the jazzy rhythms: they are rendered with character and a unique, personal insight. There is a freshness here forever captured by the great producer John McClure.

The Columbia pickup orchestra was often mostly the NY Philharmonic by another name. You will be hard-pressed to hear a difference with the sharp stylistic playing. This is no ordinary pickup ensemble. In the tone poem, the NY Philharmonic is outstanding. This ensemble, which within ten years from the time of this recording would deliver regular jaded live performances in Philharmonic Hall, was always incomparable in the recording studio. This is one hot orchestra - Lenny's band at its best. You will not find better performances of either the Rhapsody or "American In Paris."

On the negative side. This recording from the late 1950s was one of the first stereo efforts of Columbia Records and it suffers slightly with exaggerated, gimmicky stereo separation. Sadly, the editing is crude. There is an embarrassing insert at 6 minutes in with a radically different acoustical environment/mic placement and loud, distracting extraneous noises that seem to indicate the passage was taken either from a live performance or a warm-up mic test. Several entrances are cut late and jump in.

But overall, this recording is not to be missed - it is an historical document of an outstanding pianist and an American orchestra that could, when it wanted to, play better than any ensemble in the world. In spite of its flaws, this disc is a treasure to me.

I always hesitate to tell someone that any recording is a must have - but this one is firmly placed on my shortlist. Buy, Buy Buy. And enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Recording.......2001-04-06

This is outstanding recording of three monumental American compositions: Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, and Grand Canyon Suite.

The Rhapsody in Blue is outstanding. Especially solid in my opinion is the brass on this recording. Their sound is clear, not blaring and dominating as some do.

Grand Canyon Suite is thrilling rendition.

Worthy addition to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2000-07-06

The 'Rhapsody in Blue' conducted by Bernstein can truly reflect the kind of dynamic and spirit of the music. Every time I heard about it I want to stand up and dance according to its rhythm, melody and 'energy'...

4 out of 5 stars More George Canyon is a good thing.......2007-04-07

This is a terrific cd by one of my favorite singers. I just wish it were available in the US. Just to correct an error by a previous reviewer - George Canyon was not the first Nashville Star winner...that was Buddy Jewell. George was the runner-up in season two of Nashville Star. He lost out to Brad Cotter which was a shame since George was the better singer/performer. Anyway, I highly recommend George's music. He's a talented as well as genuinely nice man.

4 out of 5 stars Somebody Wrote Love.......2007-03-09

I think that this CD is very good. It is well put together and George Canyon is truely an amazing singer. He is a talent that is upcoming and should be around for a long time. He has a gift for singing as do concert pianist for tickling the keys.

Prime Cuts: Your Smile, Madi's Song (The Man She Thinks I Am), The Hard Times

George Canyon has been nascent to the slew of Nashville star artists throwing out CDs. Crowned as the first Nashville star in 2004, "One Good Friend," his Universal South Records debut, followed on the heels of his condign win. Unfortunately the millions of votes did not translate into sales or radio airplay, resulting in Universal South Records' decision not to released follow-up "Somebody Wrote Love" to the US market. Only released in his native Canada, the US consumer market's fickleness is its own loss, as this sophomore CD for Universal South shows depth and gravitas. Also, as an added bonus, Canyon brings a matured nuance to his delivery testimonial of a singer who sings as if he has been through the wringer of these paeans' emotional depths a few times himself. Part of such a success comes from album's well-chosen tunes. Instead of pocketing most of the writing royalties himself by penning paltry run-of-the-mill commodities, Canyon has garnered songs from Music Row's luminaries such as Rick Bowles, Pat Alger, Neil Thrasher, Gordie Sampson and Tom Shapiro among others.

As they say the last shall be first, "The Hard Times," which encores this CD, is easily the album's most outstanding cut. A lacerating Gospel piano-led ballad, "The Hard Times" squares with life's tribulations face to face. Instead of offering one of those "mansion-in-the-sky" escapes, Canyon urges us to thank God for trials as they are divine pedagogical devices used to teach us about faith and God himself. This is soul saving stuff; this is music that truly makes a difference. Also, quite affecting, though less emotionally cumbrous are a couple of love ballads "Coming from You" and " I Want You to Live." Pat Alger (who has penned hits for Don Williams, Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks) shares the pen with Canyon on "Madi's Song," an acoustic ballad that excels on its simple yet heartfelt words.

Surfeited with some twangy lead guitar, the title track and also the vanguard single, is a propulsive upbeat number that has a melody that is capable of re-spinning in one's mind even when the song's over. While those who have been privy to Canyon's baritone charms will be delighted with the slow almost spoken intro of "Time for Goodbye" before the song transforms into a rousing toe-tapping barn burner. While "Your Smile" finds a love-struck Canyon in his celebratory best, and it is made even more jovial with a punctuated Roger-Whittaker-like whistle at the song's bridge. A few other peppy cuts such as "Drinkin' Thinkin'," "Ladders to Climb" and "Quitters" are more of a standard fare without much to write home about.

On the whole "Somebody Wrote Love" is not for the puerile. Rather, this is a CD that anchors itself with shafts of insights---some of which are heartwarming, some of which are life affirming, while others are thoughts to wrestle with. Nevertheless, this is a bunch of songs that gets to the soul and heart. While many artists are caught in the mire of sophomore slum, Canyon's well-chosen songs and reflective deliveries have elevated him to firmer grounds of longevity and gravitas.
