The Best of Jim Reeves

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Although Jim Reeves is classified as a country singer, his smooth delivery is pure cosmopolitan croon. He makes Barry White sound like an overexcited amateur. For Reeves, the key was understatement. The material would be produced with just enough of everything and by the best session players available: Chet Atkins on guitar, Floyd Cramer on piano, the Jordinaires on backing vocals. Reeves's best material is seductive even as tragedy fouls his plan. "The Blizzard" is a horrible weeper, "He'll Have to Go," the ultimate in sexual confidence, and "Four Walls" is an open admission of loneliness. Reeves sound is slick but never soulless. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Gentleman Jim From the Early Days Until It Was Over.......2004-11-17

This is another long-gone but popular artist whose compilations are many. This is a good one that covers the early songs like "Mexican Joe" and an oft-recorded "I Love You Because" up to "Angels Don't Lie" around the time of Jim's fatal crash. With all of the man's heartbreak songs, starting notably with "Four Walls", there is a well-orchestrated background sound that adds to the poignancy of this velvet-toned performer. Country songwriting talent abounds with "Distant Drums" (Hall of Famer Cindy Walker), "Welcome to my World" (likewise Hank Cochran) and "I Missed Me" (Whispering Bill Anderson). There were other songs of note released after Jim Reeves' death not on this compilation such as "That's When I See the Blues (In Your Pretty Brown Eyes)" but if you look around, you might still want to buy this one. It's a keeper.

    4 out of 5 stars Mixed Experience.......2007-07-08

I bought this CD a few years ago. It was manufactured in Belgium and contained a strange clear seal on the playing side. I discovered that it would only play in top loading CD players and not without interference. I had to have it professionally recopied and it cost me $25.00. I guess it was made to play on Region 2 DVD players.

I now enjoy the beautiful voice I enjoyed as a child while living in a British colonial nation, with the BBC providing the inspiration. Since most of Jim's CD's are manufactured overseas clear the compatibility hurdle before purchasing.

3 out of 5 stars GREAT SONG SELECTION; PRODUCTION IS DULL.......2005-03-05

Reeves voice is incomparable and the song selections are great! The production values are dull. Reeves recorded at a time during the sixties when arrangements were lush with strings, which I love. For those who love simple arrangements, this is the CD for you as Reeves voice is the primary attraction. If you want a voice complemented by sophisticated production (aka the sixties sound) you will be disappointed. The songs are great, Reeves is great, the production not so great!

    5 out of 5 stars A great, relaxing CD.......2002-11-01

I bought this for my Dad's birthday, and he plays it most every Sunday. Reeves reminds me of Eddy Arnold's smooth style.

    2 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2002-03-22

This album is only 20+ minutes long and doesn't start to cover the career of a truly great singer. Was he country or pop? Does it matter? The quality on this album is not great. Go for one of the longer and remastered releases.

    3 out of 5 stars Left Wanting.......2000-11-10

The transition from original recordings to digital is crisp and clear, if a little sibilant, and really dramatizes Jim's wondeful balladeering. The Blizzard remains endearingly haunting in it's simple, but powerful story telling, and no collection would be complete without "He'll have to Go". Unfortunately though, however good this album is, it is annoyingly short, how an album can be packaged as "best of" with only 8 tracks! and a total playing time of under 30 minutes tends to leave you feeling sold short and wanting more. The truth is that there are equally good albums available with many more of Jims multitude of hits and great ballads, and though they may lack a little in sound quality, they are much better value for money.

    5 out of 5 stars Past Situation.......1999-04-04

Back in the LATE 60'S - early 70's my Father wrote a letter to RCA telling them that the the song "Am I Losing You" should be taken off the album, an orchastra added, and made into a 45 rpm. They did just that. Sold many millions of copys, and rewarded my Father with a letter of thanks, and a free record. Was that not just overwhelming of RCA. Its a good thing they did not go broke sending him that FREE RECORD!

4 out of 5 stars Almost, Not Quite.......2004-10-14

I recommend you buy EVERYTHING there is by Jim Reeves; I have, though much of it is on vinyl, well-protected over the years, or on cassettes where I transferred it. "I Won't Come in While He's There" and "Blue Side of Lonesome" are NOT worthy of being called the very best of Gentleman Jim's work; there are greater compilations I could recommend too, but if you like his voice and style, you won't care. Lay your money down.

    5 out of 5 stars Legandary Performers.......2004-03-17

During the period from 1930-1960's Many Legandary Performers came and went through Nashville, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline,Jim Reeves and so many more. Most of them are gone now but Jim Reeves just keeps Marching on, Nothing seem's to be able to stop him not even death. All of those listed above died in tragic accidents which cut their careers & Lives very short but none have had the lasting impact that Jim has had on the Generations that have followed. Many of todays stars can trace their insperations back to Jim Reeves. For anyone who would want to get a sense of what Country music was, is and shall be, this Legandary Performers work Stands alone.

Each age gifts us with legendary songs and there are some legendary songs which are ageless. Jim Reeves' songs belong in the latter class. His songs touch the core of human existence any day, any time, anywhere!
