Bob Wills meets Glenn Miller meets Esquivel's space-age bachelor-pad music as steel guitarist Jon Rauhouse blurs the distinction between hipster retro and postmodern cool. Though many of the cuts are instrumental, including a cartoon romp through "Holiday for Strings" and a revival of the theme from TV's Mannix, Rauhouse also spotlights the vocals of some luminaries he's served as a sideman. Kelly Hogan nails the Marty Robbins gunfighter ballad "Big Iron," Neko Case delivers a dreamy "East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)," and Sally Timms sounds particularly breathy and torchy on "I'll Be Seeing You." Guitar partner Tommy Connell and members of Calexico provide much of the musical backing, as Rauhouse plays Hawaiian guitar and banjo in addition to his signature steel. The 18 selections place a premium on tone and ensemble interplay rather than displays of hot licks. --Don McLeese

The world can never have enough Buddy Holly songs. And as Holly hasn't been around since 1959, the music of Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys performs a public service, as Big Sandy not only channels the pure sincerity of Holly's tenor and the sweet innocence of that musical era, but writes songs such as "Love That Man" and "The Ones You Say You Love" that sound as fresh now as Holly's forever will. Yet Big Sandy and the Boys don't confine themselves to a single genre (neither, for that matter, did Holly and the Crickets), as the roadhouse twang of "The Great State of Misery," the horn-laden, Stax/Volt R&B of "Slipping Away," and the Western swing of "Yes (I Feel Sorry for You)" all combine for the platter party conjured by "The Power of the 45," which opens and closes the album. "Drop the needle in the groove and start to move," the song implores, and it's hard to resist the invitation. --Don McLeese

Having known Robert (Robert Williams, aka Big Sandy) for seemingly decades now, following and supporting them on tours since his days with the Fly Rite TRIO and back in the day when even Will B. and the legendary, untouchable T.K. Smith was playing guitar....it's good to see the boys still doing what they have always done. Sure there have been some personnel changes along the way, but Big Sandy has always been the pinnacle of this music, only rivaled by such cats as Dave and Deke when they were still together (Deke has gone on solo now - Dave too, but to a lesser extent), or possibly the Lucky Stars and the Horton Brothers. Still, Big Sandy and gang keep on keepin' on.

This latest is no exception. If you know this scene, then I really need to explain it or describe much further. But it is amazing, as usual. Get this latest one as soon as you can, and you won't regret it. Sounds of Speedy West, Jimmy Bryant, Bob Wills and such will come flooding from your hi-fi with a "modern" touch. You can't go wrong.

If you are unfamiliar with Big Sandy, this is as good an album to begin with as any, solid tracks ready to provide the beat for your next house dance party. Those well versed in Big Sandy's medium will find no surprises here-another solid effort in the west coast rockabilly/country sounds for which he is known.

So, all right it's a c-d, but "Turntable Matinee" reminds those of us old enough to remember what it was like to set the needle in the groove and hear something special and not bat an eye at an occasional crackle or pop. This album is fantastic. Most are comparing it to Buddy Holly & the Crickets. There's some truth to that, but I'm hearing some Nick Lowe & Rockpile in there too. This album has a great "live" feel to it. I'm already looking to see what club they'll be coming to in my area.

Wayne "The Train" keeps a-rollin' as the Austin honky-tonk hero struts his stuff in live sessions on his home turf, energizing the dancers and putting a smile on the face of anyone who prefers country music with an old-fashioned kick. The ex-Marine is a hard-core country traditionalist, but his devotion to swing--Western and otherwise--gives his honky-tonk fluidity. Swing Time, produced by Texan Lloyd Maines, makes excellent use of crack guitarists Paul Skelton and Dave Biller, who deftly combine vintage licks with contemporary energy. Steel guitarist Eddie Rivers is equally effective, especially on songs like "Louisiana Blues," "Flatland Boogie," and "Big City Good Time Gal." Still it's Watson's no-nonsense vocals and 21st-century Hank Williams persona that makes the music click. Hancock reprises several songs from previous recordings, adding a quick trip down "Route 66" and an intriguing take on the standard "Summertime." --Michael Point

I recently disovered the wonders of Accuradio and, in particular, the station TWANG. It is awesome. There are a few CD's that are in heavy rotation other than Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson. This is one of them, and for good reason. It sounds new and old, and Wayne's voice does have an uncanny resemblance to a certain Hank Williams. The music has this quality that you rarely hear of being familiar and completely unique at the same time. Hat's off to the band for making it sound oh so easy. It's toe tapping heaven.

5 out of 5 stars A fun, relaxed live set.......2003-08-20

A great live set recorded down in Austin by hard-country hero Wayne The Train Hancock and his band, featuring Dave Biller on guitar, a bit of trombone tootling by Bob "Texaco" Stafford, and solid, lively backing by all the others. From the album title, I had expected Hancock to indulge his interest in jazz-standards and swing, but I ain't complaining that this is a strait-up country album instead -- not by a longshot! Really, it's amazing to hear anyone playing such as rough and rowdy, yet accomplished and historically aware kinda country these days, and this disc captures the energy and charm of Hancock's live shows pretty well. High points include his new version of "Thunderstorms And Neon Signs," which may actually outdo the original -- overall, another top-notch release! Highly recommended.

    Album Description

Back in the day, when musicianship was still valued by the music industry, any respectable record collection had more than a few instrumental records. Above all this music was fun. And its that spirit of fun that is captured on "Steel Guitar Air Show" We tried to convince Jon that the lounge revival was over. Undaunted, he donned his smoking jacket and broke out his pick and slide. Chock fill of classics like Perfidia, the Lonely Bull, and Choo Choo Ch' Boogie, a mix of spunky originals and guest stars like Neko Case, Sally Timms, Calexico and more, it's part Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant back from the grave and part Esquivel wearing spurs. Add up all these parts, throw in the unquestionable technical mastery of one tricky instrument and "Steel Guitar Air Show' will guarantee your next dinner party or lazy afternoon won't crash and burn.

5 out of 5 stars Money well spent!!!.......2006-06-07

I'll start by saying that I've always liked the snippets of steel guitar interlaced in the old country melodies of the 50's and 60's...but then I truly like all kinds of music. On my quest to discover a Steel Guitar album that really focused on the instrument, I ran across Mr. Jon Rauhouse. I was pleasantly surprised to discover a power-master of his craft which left me satisfied in my quest, yet longing for a deeper catalogue of albums.

Jon Rauhouse's tunes are the kind that stick with you long after you've heard them, and as another review put very aptly: "audio antidoepressant." The tune: "Can 'O Corn" sticks to your ribs for hours in a way that modern music just won't do. If you are a fan of nostalgic or hip-billy music, you can't go wrong with this album - buy Steel Guitar Air Show first, then pick up the next album that's released!

5 out of 5 stars Audio Antidepressant good for what ails you. .......2005-11-10

Straight from half the albums released by Bloodshot Records comes the Steel Guitar Virtuoso Jon Rauhouse. The music is varied yet invariably makes you feel fine in a topdown riding your big fin Caddie across country to Hipsville and all points Cool sort of way. Is it Kitsch? Yeah, but theres kitsch and then theres Kitsch. The performers helping out with vocals and such give you a nice view of some of the other talents handled by this small label. I heartily reccomend this album. I also reccomend checking out the Bloodshot Records website for other great albums. The Website offers great sales and free shipping within the Continental U.S.

4 out of 5 stars Goofy but intelligent novelty instrumentals.......2002-09-25

Like his brother-in-steel, Joe Goldmark, pedal player Jon Rauhouse has a loopy, lopsided take on the music he loves, and he shows off an amazing versatility, romping through novelty instrumentals ("Glow Worm"), western swing, Hawaiian slack-key, spy jazz and buoyant, mellowed out R&B oldies. All sorts of folks from the Bloodshot scene pitch in, including Neko Case, Sally Timms and others, but it's basically Rauhouse's show. I don't tend to be a big fan of the tounge-in-cheek instrumental albums of recent vintage, but this one is consistantly engaging and inventive... worth checking out!

4 out of 5 stars The Best of Bill Haley and His Comets 1951-1954.......2005-04-17

Bill Haley usually gets his due for helping to kick off the rock & roll era with "Rock Around the Clock" in 1954, but as it happens, Haley had been cutting solid rock sides several years before that. Haley covered Jackie Brenston's epochal "Rocket '88" within a few months of its 1951 release with his Western swing outfit, Bill Haley & the Saddlemen, and after that it didn't take long for Haley and his bandmates to make with the boogie and add some strong proto-rockabilly material to their set. The result was a string of regional hits for the Essex label that eventually led to Haley's signing to Decca Records and the recording of the song that became both his greatest triumph and the millstone he could never escape. "The Best of Bill Haley and His Comets 1951-1954" is hardly the first album to skim the cream off Haley's pre-Decca hits (pick up "Rock the Joint" for a more complete picture of this era), but it's more concise and better sounding than most collections of Haley's Essex sides, and leaves his lukewarm hillbilly material by the wayside in favor of straight-ahead rock & roll (though Billy Williamson's blazing steel guitar solos point to the band's country roots). These recordings prove that Haley's showy style had fully evolved long before "Rock Around the Clock" made him an international star, and if anything this material makes for a more satisfying listen than the vast majority of Haley compilations on the market, with "Rock the Joint," "Real Rock Drive," and "Crazy Man, Crazy" standing alongside his very finest work. "The Best of Bill Haley and His Comets" is a well-considered tribute to the formative years of one of rock's more neglected pioneers, and it's plenty of fun to boot.

5 out of 5 stars rockin, swingin' rhythm and blues........2005-01-21

An amazing collection of Haley's pre rock around the clock recordings. It's a swingin' collection. BIll Haley is the true king of rock. the best songs on this cd are rocket 88 and rock the joint. this is the original rock. Bill began rock and roll by blending country and western and rhythm and blues together. it's a great cd for the hard core bill haley fan!

5 out of 5 stars Before "Rock Around the Clock," Haley went crazy man, crazy.......2004-06-24

Before Bill Haley began rocking around the clock tonight, he released singles with his group the Saddlemen. So what to call this new brand of music? Western swing mixed with polka? A fusion of country-western and 40's R&B set to a steady beat? Country boogie? Call it what you will, but this collection consists of A and B-sides of his singles on Holiday and later Essex Records, which veers closely to his later chart-toppers.

Clearly, Haley saw this R&B style music as his fugure, given by his own cover of Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88", which is considered by some to be the first R&R song and not "Rock Around the Clock," and Jimmy Preston's #6 R&B hit, "Rock This Joint," both included here. The latter definitely predicts his later style, with some piercing steel guitar reflecting the country roots, but it was also the song Alan Freed played over and over and yelling "rock and roll, everybody!" on the King of the Moondogs show.

Songs like "Green Tree Boogie" would have rhythms repeated in their later material as well as stuff done by Little Richard but more raucously. The steel guitar and loudly pronounced bass enhances the beat. The brisk "Dance With A Dolly" sounds like early Louis Jordan material, especially with the piano boogie solo in the middle, with a kind of nursery rhyme-like beat.

One day, Bill Haley asked some kids how they liked his music. One responded, "crazy man, crazy," which Haley wrote down on a napkin. This standout song which reached #12 on the charts in 1953, was the first blip he made before he exploded with "Rock Around The Clock." With its "go go go everybody" shouts in the middle, accompanied by the Comets' trademark country guitar, how could this miss? I heard this song via a compilation LP my father bought back in the 50's. Another song that was on that compilation was "Farewell, So Long, Goodbye," with its rude-noise bari-sax note after each time the chorus was sung. Or did the Comets have some really strong chili before the recording session?

Chanting harmony choruses were prevalent in a cover of Faye Adams' R&B hit "I'll Be True" and "Live It Up" with its opening tribal drums and frat choruses.

Another observation is how nursery rhymes were recycled with early rock and roll arrangements and additional lyrics. Again, this seems to echo what Louis Jordan's nursery rhyme medley, "School Days (When We Were Kids)" earlier. Here, Haley gives the R&R treatment to "Pat-A-Cake" as in Pat a cake, pat a cake, baker's man, and "Ten Little Indians," which despite its as stance at being condescending to Native Americans today, does put on a thrilling beat. "Stop Beatin' Round The Mulberry Bush" also borrows from a nursery rhyme, and it was just before this song came out that Haley and company ditched the cowboy outfits, donned the suits and ties, and became the Comets in 1952.

"Fractured" was based on slang kids were using then, as in "this music fractures me," showing the Haley was attentive of the times and his audience, the pop market with its white teenagers. And his R&R cover of the 40's standard "Chattanooga Choo Choo" shows him reaching back to the big band days, with the female backing chorus reminding the era of the original.

There's no denying Haley brought out a new brand of music to white audiences, and helped changed the face of popular music,--and I really dig this stuff-- but what must be understood is that his fame came at the expense of many black artists unable to reach white audiences due to the recording industry.

5 out of 5 stars The headwaters of rock 'n' roll.......2004-04-30

For many artists, the public's perception of their career begins with a watershed moment. For Haley, that moment was the 1954 recording of "Rock Around the Clock," magnified by the song's re-appearance in the 1955 film "Blackboard Jungle." But also like many artists, Haley's career - nor what he was really famous for - was born in that seemingly single moment of inspiration. This collection shows off the years before the public's light bulb switched on, as Haley and His Comets transitioned from a western swing band to one of the (if not "the") earliest of rock 'n' roll acts.

Throughout the 40s Haley had made his way as a western swing artist. But when he signed with Essex Records in the early 50s, he began to cross-pollinate his country influences with beat-oriented R&B. The seeds of 1954's "Rock Around the Clock" can be heard loud and clear across the sixteen tracks anthologized here. What's particularly fine about these sides is their transitional nature - they're not country or R&B, nor are they yet fully transformed into rock 'n' roll. They're a hybrid in the making with slap bass and fine stick/rim work on the drums, but also featuring pedal steel guitar. There are danceable backbeats, but they often swing towards a western two-step rather than the more freestyle rhythms heard on the race chart. The sax and guitar clearly begin to define rock 'n' roll conventions, borrowing pieces from R&B, country and blues and fusing them into something entirely new. Danny Cedrone's iconic 6-string solo from "Rock Around the Clock," for example, was lifted from his own performance on 1952's "Rock the Joint." Imagine what that sounded like on Alan Freed's Cleveland radio show at the time!

Haley was unfairly reduced to a footnote for many years, obscured by the large shadows of Berry, Presley and others. What these tracks show ever so clearly is that he was fusing country and R&B into rock 'n' roll before the other "founders" were on the scene. So too was he writing prototypical rock 'n' roll songs, leaning on teen slang for "Crazy, Man, Crazy" and delving into his own imagination for "Rockin' Chair on the Moon."

This is a most welcome release in celebration of Rock 'n' Roll's 50th anniversary!

4 out of 5 stars Only 4 stars when compared to Herb Remington.......2007-06-23

This is a fine album. The only reason I rate it 4 stars is compared to Herb Remington. Herb's Steeling albums, his Floyd Tillman album and 'A Jimmy Day with Herb Remington', all from Glad Music are better by at least 1 star - in my humble opinion.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than this........2006-07-22

Jimmy Day was a master of the pedal steel. His heart-felt approach and flawless technique have influenced nearly everyone who has ever tried to play the instrument. The two LPs represented on this CD were the best pedal steel recordings ever made when they were released, and they hold up remarkably well even today.

Jimmy is gone now, but the beautiful sound he made will be with us forever.

5 out of 5 stars Impeccable, flawless and oh-so-good..........2004-08-05

This cd is "marred" by one thing: slightly cheesy, Swingle-singer-esque (for those that can remember the Swingle Singers) vocals. This is the same sort of thing that plagued the Scotty Moore cd, although in Scotty Moore's case the backup vocals were laid down by the Jordanaires.

BUT, and this is a HUGE but...BUT, no matter how slightly cheesy the vocals may be on this cd, it cannot in any way, shape or form take away from Jimmy Day's eloquent playing. In a word, it is phenomenal. You can actually feel Jimmy's emotion, heart and soul pouring from each note of every song. And it is truly remarkable.

The first half of this cd is the "rag" section, characterized by mostly upbeat, swinging songs. The second half of the cd is much more laid-back and mellow (3/4 time) kind of songs. It has, in what is my humble opinion, one of the greatest renditions of Willie Nelson's penned-tune, "Funny How Time Slips Away." It's hands-down one of the best versions I've ever heard and in and of itself is worthy of the cost of this disc.

If you're at all familiar with Jimmy Day's work, you will not regret getting this disc. Definitely also check out some of Buddy Emmons releases, as well as those of Jimmy Bryant and Speedy West. Of course, Bear Family put out an amazing 4-disc Jimmy Bryant and Speedy West anthology, but for those who don't like the high cost of admission on Bear Family releases, also be on the lookout for a Sundazed Records release called "Frettin' Fingers" which is a beautiful 3-disc collection of Jimmy Bryant's stuff (with a ton of Speedy West collaborations). The liner notes on the Sundazed anthology are fantastic, and even feature a commentary by none other than Deke Dickerson, legendary picker of the double-necked Mosrite that Joe Maphis and Little Larry Collins used to play.

Also....back to this Jimmy Day release....(sorry for the digression)...speaking of cheesy background vocals...something worth noting is the fact that on the second half of the cd, one of the background vocalists is the legendary Anita Kerr. Some of you may be familiar with her work with Chet Atkins, the Norman Luboff Choir and even her own outfit, the Anita Kerr Singers. I was quite impressed to see her name on the roster.

Again, get this cd...you will definitely cherish it for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Legendary Steel Guitar.......2003-05-09

This is classic Steel Guitar at its best! "Golden Steel Guitar Hits" brings all the favorite uptempo and swing tunes while the "Steel and Strings" portion has the ballad side. Jimmy Day will remain as the true master, someone who set standards for the instrument. This guy played with Ray Price, Jim Reeves, Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush and lots of others. The recordings were made around 1960, as usual Bear Family provides and extensive booklet with lots of photos and information. No collection should be without that record! Get it!

    5 out of 5 stars Jimmy's best classic instrumentals.......1999-09-22

There's more emotion and feeling in these recordings than in anything since on the steel guitar. Even the lame vocals and strings can't take away the 5 star rating.

    Album Description

The Lap Steel Guitar has been called ..."the most expressive and toneful instrument ever conceived". When you hear this album, you'll know why. Featuring a diverse range of musical styles such as Country, Hawaiian, Folk, Western Swing, Surf 'Noir'and New Age, performed by spectacular musicians from The United States, Canada, Hawaii and Australia. Some of the musicians are legendary, some have played with 'legends'. All are brilliant. Included are some 'classic' songs as well as some new compositions that are pure genius. There are two vocal tracks that show another dimension to the depth and versatility the instrument has to offer. This CD is guranteed to 'steel' your heart.

4 out of 5 stars Good but a bit misleading.......2004-01-07

First-I liked the album. The good things about it included the variety and breadth of musical styles - from Bob Brozman (poster child for all things National Guitar) to Kayton Roberts who does a nice version of Bells of St. Mary's. My only gripe is that much of the music deviates from what is known as the "lap steel guitar" (a relatively small electrified six to 10 string instrument), offering various slide guitar and resonator guitar songs as well. It would be as if they called a record "all about trombones" and only include one or two songs just with trombones and the rest with other instruments. I was not disappointed with the sound, but thought that they could have either called it something else or included more actual lap steel guitars on the record.

On Steel Guitar Rodeo and its 2002 predecessor, Steel Guitar Air Show, pedal steel guitarist Jon Rauhouse and his band of rootsifying Chicago regulars create a dreamy generic blend that froths its basic shots of country with tinges of Western swing and jazz and Hawaiian music--and the "Theme from Perry Mason." As you might expect from titles like "Hamma Hamma Hula" and "Swingin' Elephant Graveyard," this is happy music, even when guest singer Kelly Hogan is aching beautifully through "Prisoner of Love" and the estimable leader, in his rancher guise, is "wishin' and hopin' in vain" for rain. A keenly (and cleanly) melodic affair, the album also features vocals by New Pornographer Neko Case, Mekon Sally Timms and Giant Sand man Howe Gelb and a mess of ace accompaniment by featured guitarist Tommy Connell. So cohesive are the effects, the early jazz experimentation of Raymond Scott's zippy "Powerhouse" and the thick British nostalgia of the Vera Lynn tearjerker, "(There'll Be Blue Birds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover," sound right at home together. --Lloyd Sachs

    5 out of 5 stars Swingin' Fun.......2004-07-02

I heard a piece on Rauhouse on NPR and had to give the album a try. What fun! A breezy retro collection with no irony, just pure enjoyment of true 'feel good' (How I hate that phrase but here it fits) music. The vocals complement the music so well: no "American Idol" screeching here--they know how to sing. His other album, "Steel Guitar Air Show" is also excellent, and in this vein, Los Straitjackets' "Supersonic Guitars in 3D" and "Viva Los Straijackets" are worth a listen. Don't forget Ry Cooder's "Mambo Sinuendo" to complete your guitar fest.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing lineup, great tunes.......2004-03-31

Besides being an awesome pedal steel player, Jon Rauhouse knows how to make a fun record. The instrumentals on Rodeo are awesome (Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse" is incredible!). And he somehow assembled a great cast of vocalists on this disc, too--Neko Case, Carolyn Mark, Kelly Hogan, and Sally Timms all take turns on songs. Rauhouse sounds like the missing link between Speedy West and Calexico. It's retro-sounding, but not a pastiche. His songs span a bunch of eras (from Raymond Scott to alt-country), but they're all played really really really well. Guitar virtuosos can get pretty boring, but not these guys. There are a ton of different styles here, but they all somehow work together. This is one of those rare CDs that would appeal to guitar geeks or anyone who just likes to hear fun music. I could listen to this CD every day.

5 out of 5 stars Jon Rauhouse's Steel Guitar Rodeo.......2004-03-30

On NPR, All Songs Considered, Steel Guitar Rodeo was featured as one of "the most anticipated albums of 2004." www.npr.org/programs/asc/archives/yearahead04/

"Jon Rauhouse's second solo work is a diverse and eclectic mix destined to land on `Best Of' lists for 2004. Rauhouse is a guitar wizard with masterful grace and elegance." http://umbrellamusic.com/cdreview.php?id=574

5 out of 5 stars A Wonder of Joy from a sad man.......2007-05-06

I can't speak with any authority about this genre, like Kevin. I came to Harry Choates (wish I knew how to pronounce his name correctly!) via the wonderful novels of James Lee Burke, who's from New Iberia, LA, where Choates had a beloved presence during his tragically brief career.

I knew I loved cajun music, but had never heard the plaintive voice and magical fiddle of Harry, or anyone who so artfully mixed the cajun style with others current at the time. This set is truly a pleasure machine, and I agree that reading the included biography of Choates is worth the price alone. It contains all the songs of the other top rated Choates CD, and so much more. What's wonderful is that it covers not only his cajun music, but's also peppered with many tunes of varying styles--Tex-Mex, blues, jazz-influence. 'Missing You' on the 2nd CD brought tears to my eyes. And, a special section featuring his early work as a teen with Happy Fats and his Rayne-Bo Ramblers: the vocals (especially A Little High Chair) are heartrending.

I put it on in the car, open the windows and blast the volume up with a big grin on my face, tapping my toe on the accelerator and steering wheel, while any with open windows near me smile back. Buy it and smile! Buy it and dance while you do chores! Buy it and warm your heart and feel human.

The authenticity and soul of this music reminds me why I'm so dissatisfied with most modern music.

5 out of 5 stars Cajun Hillbilly Great Gets Recognized.......2002-11-15

Harry Choates was a Cajun fiddler who had a major country crossover hit with his version of "Jole Blon." Primarily thought of as a Cajun fiddler, Choates drank deeply from western swing and jazz traditions, just listen to his superb performance of "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town." (This title was finally reissued on CD with this set.) The excellent Bear Family compilation pulls together Choates' Gold Star recordings and includes an extensive, newly researched biography--worth the price of the set alone. This is a wonderful reissue, now let's finish the job by reissuing his recordings on the Macy's label. "Devil in the Bayou" belongs in every Cajun, Country, and fiddle collection.

Former Ventures' lead guitarist Nokie Edwards joins talents with pioneers of Western Swing, The Light Crust Doughboys and former Rick Nelson and Buck Owens steel guitarist Tom Brumley. The meeting is an aural feast of traditional country and folk sounds by some of the finest instrumentalists to ever pick guitars and banjos.

    1 out of 5 stars In Future = No Sound Samples = Won't Buy........2007-03-30

I was hoping for western swing with a little more surf twang in the leads than the Bob Wills variety, what I got was what it would sound like if a Monkees cover band did these tunes and dropped out the vocals. Overproduced, overbearing country-type elevator music. As each track started I kept reaching to turn down the volume a little more ...and Beer Barrel Polka wherein someone is banging against a mic does not help the mix. Lesson learned.

5 out of 5 stars Nokie Edwards A+ Grammy Award Level Performance.......2006-09-10

Wonder why the Ventures were the largest selling instrutmental recording group of all time. Two words come to mind, Nokie Edwards!
If you haven't followed Nokie's career then this CD will probably be a revelation. Guitar playing doesn't get much better than this.

Those guitar mags that feature the same no talent rock guitarists that all play variations on the same 6 riffs & these cats call themselves guitarists, let alone muscians. PLEASE!!! Buy this country western theme CD & listen to a true guitarists guitarist & a true musicians musician. Ladies & gentleman presenting NOKIE EDWARDS!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very Best in its Field.......2004-09-08

This is the first instrumental album I turn to for car and home listening. It's an essential album for guitar fans and for country music fans and students. It's unlike Nokie's later albums with The Doughboys which are more pop-oriented and Ventures'-style. This masterpiece, however, is much rawer and roots-oriented, and it sizzles from song-to-song with funky feel. Just wait until you hear "The Orange Blossom Special" and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds". I heard Nokie with The Doughboys in concert in Mesquite, Texas, and it was the best variety show and musical festival I've ever attended. The electricity between the musicians and in the auditorium was atomic-powered.
This Nokie-Light Crust Doughboys series including CHRISTMAS albums, country-folk albums and pop albums is one of the greatest series of albums in instrumental music history.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Country Instrumental-The Best of Country Guitar.......2004-01-12

This fantastic album is the ultimate country guitar showcase; if you don't like instrumentals with a strong melody line and clarity of tone, then stick to jazz or contemporary western jazz, because this album has classic Patsy Cline/Jim Reeves/Elvis/Hank Williams appeal! This is roots-Americana at its best! And as far as being authentic, players on this album defined the term "country music"! Players like Smokey Montgomery and Bill Simmons of The Light Crust Doughboys are the fathers of country music and Grammy-winning instrumentalists. Even Ventures' great Nokie Edwards, the featured soloist here, has a pedigree in country that's tops: lead guitarist for Buck Owens, Lefty Frizzell, David Frizzell and Shelly West, and many more. Again, don't expect the free-form, progressive jazz of Pat Martino here; this is guitar music with space and tone, Texas meets Nashville! But what this album is...is the best country instro album of the year in the classic country-easy listening vein.

1 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea..........2003-12-13

I love vintage music like Bob Wills western swing and even newer bands like Asleep At The wheel. This cd is not too good, the playing isn't authentic western swing, and I don't much care for it, it's slightly annoying...
