Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Louisiana Rockabilly.......2004-12-12

Say "Louisiana Music" to someone and rockabilly usually isn't the style they first think of--normally Cajun or zydeco or jazz will first pop out of their mouths. But the state produced some excellent rockabilly performers such as the great Jerry Lee Lewis, Al Ferrier, and Jay Chevalier. This disc is a long overdue collection of the latter's rock and country sides spanning from the late 1950s to the 1980s. Chevalier is firmly in the classic rockabilly style on numbers like "Castro Rock," easily his best rock offering. Where Jay gets interesting is in his various takes on Louisiana history--he memorializes football great Billy Cannon, stripper Blaze Starr, and the legendary Gov. Earl K. Long--"The Ballad of Earl K. Long" is worth the price of this disc. He also has a nice duet with Grace Broussard on "Leaving It Up to You," a remake of a Swamp Pop classic. There are a lot of topical songs here, some better than others, but Jay could rock and hopefully this reissue will help give him some much deserved recogniton.
