Tracks 1 and 8 are just awful. "Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, ugh!" Puh-leeez. It's not even good music.
Not to mention the fact that one track lists two freedoms of - speech, religion - and then two freedoms from - want and fear ... a complete butchering of the First Amendment.
But what else is new in our hyper-patriotic, hyper-consumerist country?
We should all be real Patriots.......2006-07-06

Though Hollywood has long had a love affair with historical epics, it has sorely shortchanged America's own most compelling chapter, the War of Independence. And if this tale of a retiring Colonial hero whose family gets drawn into the war against the British has no shortage of production ironies--being helmed by a German director and starring Australian-raised Mel Gibson--its score is a solid, stirring effort by American John Williams. Largely eschewing typical bombastic epic fodder for a mostly understated score rich in his distinctive writing for brass and strings, Williams's music seeks out the story's emotional underpinnings as much as its battle-scarred action sequences. The haunting main theme here begins as a Celtic-flavored reel for guitar and violin, then wells into strings, martial drumbeats, and full-bodied brass. Much as he did for the Oscar-nominated Saving Private Ryan, Williams paints a mature, alternately abstract and pastoral portrait of armed conflict, often as not reinventing the genre's heroic traditions as he goes. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
John Williams at his best yet again..........2007-03-19
Great Soundtrack...just try not to love it..........2006-08-23
Breathtaking!.......2006-02-07
My favorite track is the Colonial Cause in which John Williams effectively shows off the rousing and majestic theme.
John Williams is able to craft another masterpiece by utilizing the big brass on his orchestra so effectively. The Patriot is a must for brass lovers!
John Williams is THE MAN!!
Soul-stirring.......2005-09-06
Sound that Exceeds Far Beyond the Track.......2005-08-01
Nevertheless, achievements such as Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, and the Indiana Jones trilogy have left me in awe of Williams' talent. With that said, I firmly took pleasure in The Patriot far more than any of his work with director Steven Spielberg.
I have no intention of going into detail my fascination with this soundtrack, but I will explicitly clarify my motives for favoring this score over any others, for I know many Williams admirers will be reading this:
For starters, I believe Williams captured the quintessence of the Revolutionary War - that whole time era in general, in fact - quite superbly. The violins are a charming sound to outline for such an introductory track, and I suppose that's what formed my biased perspective on the musical score, were his influential melodies with the instrument. And the way he re-introduces the main theme with track four, "The Colonial Cause," was magnificent; and furthermore how he continues it inconsistently through to the end.
I suppose I could lie and say Mel Gibson's acting, the sentiment he brought to the screen, helped amplify the soundtrack's main theme, but that would, indeed, be proven false, for Gibson had no contact or persuasion at all with regard to this score. Sure, his acting was worthy of exposure, but the music itself was all Williams, and I respect him for that.
Oh, well, I don't want to ramble on with the same manure I see other reviewers doing, so I'll end it promptly with a short conclusion: if you've enjoyed such musical scores as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Hook, and/or Jurassic Park, then you'll at the very least find this one out of the ordinary. All that I ask is that you give it a chance; there are so many striking fundamentals about this masterpiece that I can't even illustrate, and for that basis alone obliges me to value it.

Customer Reviews:
It IS Good!.......2006-03-16
James Horner is one of the most controversial score composers because of his habit to quote works from other composers, but I don't care.
Three reasons why I started collecting soundtracks: James Horner, John Capenter, John Williams.
Many people consider Horner's Patriot Games one of his weakest works, and I don't know why!
Horner just knows how to score an action movie, and he reached the pinnacle with COMMANDO. And why does his RED HEAT score get so bad reviews? Whatever.
James Horner did things only James Horner could have done(COMMANDO, RED HEAT), and PATRIOT GAMES is another score from Horner that is full of excitement.
When Horner scores an action scene he throws in everything plus the kitchen sink, resulting in such tracks as THE HIT, and achieving something like a musical orgasm. Wow!
There are many great moments on this CD like the quieter MAIN TITLE and HIGHLAND'S EXECUTION.
All in all, highly recommended!
One of the most exciting soundtracks you'll ever own.......2004-10-13
In addition, the score boasts a fast musical pace, and mixed in throughout is a wonderful blend of Irish/Celtic themes and a couple of songs sung by the Irish singing family Clannad (which formerly included the world-renowned Enya) including what is perhaps their most famous piece "Harry's Game".
This soundtrack is perfect reading music, because it is intermittently fast-paced and peaceful and relaxing. Even if you haven't seen the film, if you enjoy Irish instrumental music, you will not be disappointed with this purchase.
Listen to the Music, then watch the movie again.......2002-07-24
The one thing that really made me appreciate the music and the movie even more, was watching the movie after having listened to the cd several times. I had the cd almost memorized, when I watched the movie for the first time in several years, wow, you really have a better appreciation for both, and for Horner's work.
A Formula That Works........2001-11-20
As a listener, you will pretty much figure out that when the Celtic instruments begin playing it's because the terrorists are attacking in the movie. In another time and place, vocalist Maggie Boyle's traditional Gaelic song heard in the Main Title might be the sound of the choir at the beginning of "Titanic". The "Hit" track, heard when Sean Miller rams Katherine and Sally off the highway, follows much of the same kind of wood flute, keyboard and percussion patterns I described in my review of the "Legends of the Fall" CD. And the assault on the Ryan house is an eleven minute long track on this CD that sounds like an early-in-the-making-but-rejected version of the Revenge track on "Braveheart." And oh yeah, one last thing that I find rather amusing: all during the heavy action tracks on this CD you can hear either a flute or a pennywhistle soaring up and down all kinds of ways that don't seem to gel with what every other instrument in the track is doing. I wonder if this is Horner's way of trying to show two different sides of Ireland: the dark side affected by terrorists and the bright side that many tourists will see if they visit Ireland.
One Of Horner's Laziest Works Ever.......2001-10-14
The main title is kinda dull with a traditional gaelic song that should have worked better if Horner had given it more strength. 'Attack On The Royals' started sounding fine, but after the first minute, I could tell that he was noticing he was getting tired writing almost the same material he's written before. 'The Hit' and 'Assault On Ryan's House' present full synthesizers to the score, but -forgive me for saying this -the music sounds repetitive, with the same notes all over those tracks with almost no variations. Wow!! How I wished to have heard something like "48 Hrs.", or "Gorky Park", or "Commando".
The only good things about this soundtrack are Horner's own 'Highland's Execution' (with the voice from the main title singing mysteriously and enchantingly) and 'Boat Chase' (where the orchestrations sound powerful, even though it's something recycled from his previous work).
This is the kind of work that should be forgotten. James Horner should have done something better. However, I thank God for his "Clear And Present Danger" score.
