4 out of 5 stars Still better than today's "music".......2007-06-18

TOSOL is not my favorite of the Moodies and it certainly is not their best work by far. Still, it's the Moody Blues, and even at their worst, they are better than 99% of the "stuff" being peddled today and labeled music.

I enjoyed Justin Hayward's Your Wildest Dreams, I just Don't Care, and The other Side of Life. Hayward and Lodge collaborated on Running out of Love and I love the song on all levels, especially their sweet harmony.
John Lodge's It May Be a Fire isn't my fave of his but it was a pleasant surprise as was Rock n Roll Over You.

This CD is for die-hard MB's completists or those who love 80's sounding music. The "core 7 MB only" folks probably hate this one. I love The Moodies and am willing to stick by them thru thick and thin. This CD isn't vintage Moody Blues, but hey it WAS the 1980's.

3 out of 5 stars The beginning of the drum machine with acoustic guitar era.......2007-01-08

And now for all you Miami Vice fans The Moody Blues. I remember when this album came out as I still had high hopes for the band. Unfortunately, this would also mark the end for my hopes for this band. One of the Moodies strengths for me anyway was the band's ability to make what felt like organic music but with this album all that changed. The band's last album The Present hadn't sold as well as the band had hoped and also the band's label had now been taken over by Polygram. The idea was to come up with an album that would bring in new fans while still keeping the old. Enter new producer Tony Visconti who was most known for working with David Bowie. This album was also the first to feature no playing OR songwriting by Ray Thomas although he's shown in all the group photos and listed as a band member. This album did suceed in creating a new generation of fans thanks to the videos Your Wildest Dreams and The Other Side Of Life getting heavy airplay on MTV. In fact, both videos won MTV video awards. Rock And Roll Over You was featured in the Kirate Kid 2 movie. This was also the first tour the band did with many backup singers and additional musicians. As for the album itself sounds very processed and very 1986 if you know what I mean. There are a few good songs on here to be sure: Your Wildest Dreams, Running Out Of Love, Slings And Arrows, and It May Be A Fire. However, most of the rest is more than forgettible and some is even hard to listen to.

2 out of 5 stars Moody Blues sell their soul.......2006-07-30

This album is pretty bad (Moody Blues wise), and hasn't aged very well. It's got a few good songs, "Wildest Dreams," "Running Out Of Love" & "The Other Side Of Life," but most of it is so far off track to what makes the Moody Blues magical. It sounds like they're using a drum machine instead of Edge, and there's no Ray Thomas to be found. It reminds me of what happened to another band called Heart; selling your musical soul to keep up with the times.

I remember buying this album along with Deep Purple's "House Of Blue Light" in early '87. I didn't really like either very much. Can you imagine, two of your favorite bands crumbling to the ugly sounds of the mid '80's. To this day, I still don't like this album, but Deep Purple's did grow on me. I guess Purple didn't sound so dated in hindsight, because of the fact they were using real drums and all five of their members were involved. But not the Moodies.

Anyway, the next Moody Blues album, 1988's "Sur La Mer," was a lot better, if you like that "80's sound." But, if you are looking for a really good follow up to 1981's "Long Distance Voyager," you need to find 1983's "The Present."

3 out of 5 stars The Moodies go technopop...yikes!!!.......2006-03-28

For devoted Moody freaks, this album takes a little getting used to. When I first picked it up and listened to it in 1986, the first cut "Your Wildest Dreams" sounded like a sure winner for being a huge pop hit WHICH IT WAS, going all the way to #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart, and peaking at #9 on the Billboard Pop chart. From there, the album takes a very unusual turn, and when I heard "Talkin' Talkin'", I about jumped out of my skin as I said to myself "Oh my God, the Moodies have gone technopop!!!" Then the next track "Rock And Roll Over You" (which was also included in the soundtrack of Karate Kid Part Two) left me feeling even more astonished and flabbergasted. The music then returns to "normal", with the ballad "I Just Don't Care", and "Running Out of Love", a song about being in a quandry of what to do with a fractured love relationship. The title cut is weird and spooky in its content, and the accompanying video (if you have ever seen it) is ten times as freaky. "Slings and Arrows" is a catchy track, with all the instruments falling into place one by one at the beginning of the song, while the remaining two tracks on the album, "The Spirit" and "It May Be A Fire" rank as average. Avid Moodies fans will find the best cuts here worth purchasing this album, but be prepared for a very different Moodies sound on a few of the tracks. Worthy of 3 1/2 stars.

Although I love the Moody Blues, this is not one of my favorite albums by them. It's got some great songs, but also a few that I just don't like that well. Still worth having for a true fan, however.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Leonard Bernstein's New York is a cornucopia of tongue-in-cheek wit, unabashed romanticism, big-city loneliness, and intellectual irony. His well-known orchestral brilliance is beautifully represented under the stellar conducting of Eric Stern, but his underappreciated talents as a songwriter are what shine, elevating this recording to magic. The cast of American theater's best includes Mandy Patinkin wonderfully indulging his comic side; Judy Blazer and Donna Murphy, the shiniest lights on Broadway, demonstrating their extensive range as singing actresses; Audra McDonald making the difficult sound easy; and Richard Muenz and Dawn Upshaw singing elegantly. Most unforgettably pleasing are the trios "Ya Got Me" and "What A Waste." A great tribute to Bernstein's theater works. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-03-13

I agree that this is a great collection. But I have to wonder: Am I the only one who got a bum copy of the CD? The songs are all mixed up on my copy, as in, most of the tracks are mislabeled: "A Quiet Girl" is really "Tonight", The Balcony Scene, printed as "Tonight" is really "Somewhere". The list goes on.

So, who do I kvetch to? I'd like a copy that isn't a complete mishmash.

1 out of 5 stars The Feel of New York.......2007-01-09

Having spent most of my working years in NYC, I felt this CD brought the city to me. Bernstein has allways been a favorite.

5 out of 5 stars The next stop once you've heard the originals.......2007-01-09

As a tribute to Bernstein on Broadway, this CD is hard to beat. All the singers are stars but of a generation, ro two, beyond the originals. Naturally here's been a change of style, and these renditions are more knowing, sophisticated, and at times ironic than the originals. On their own, Donna Murphy, Dawn Upshaw, and Mandy Patinkin, among others, are masters of their craft, but I hope anyone who loves LB will also seek out the original cast albums for all of his musicals, or the clesest one can get (On the Town was remade in the Fifties). Those recordings cast a unique spel, but the next stop is this marvelous CD.

5 out of 5 stars Bernstein's New York, it's a wonderful town!.......2002-01-15

And speaking of "Wonderful Town," it's so nice to hear music from this least appreciated of Bernstein's musicals. "What a Waste," "A Quiet Girl" and Audra McDonald's enchanting "A Little Bit in Love" have never sounded better. Donna Murphy burns the house down with the torchy "Ain't Got No Tears Left," and has fun with Patinkin and Blazer on the raucous "Ya Got Me." "One Hand, One Heart" sung by Dawn Upshaw and Richard Muenz is movingly rendered, as is Patinkin's wonderful delivery of an all-time Bernstein favorite, "Some Other Time." My only comlaint? Where is "I Can Cook Too?" A terrific recording.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD BUT..........2000-07-02

I loved this CD, but there was some things that kept it fromgetting four stars. First Mandy Patkin, I loved him in Sunday in The Park With George, also I have a CD of him singing yiddish songs all good, but in this CD I just don't like him. Like in the song "Come Up To My Place" I didn't like his voice and I never could quite see him as the character for that song. Also I would have liked to see (well actually "hear") some more of the dance numbers or overtures, I realize the main point of the CD was all the singers they put together, but the real highlight of the CD for me was the sections from Fancy Free, and Ballet At The Village Vortex from Wonderful Town. Also I liked "One Hand One Heart" a lot. Overall I would get this CD if you like Bernstein or any of these musicals, it is good listen, just not outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars American Gothic.......2007-07-07

This is my first Dowd album, and I'm pretty impressed. The experience of listening to Dowd is even like that of listening to an album. It's more like you're on some sort journey - Dante's Inferno, the Backwoods Ride. Dowd's a great songwriter, but a twisted one. These are gothic tales that can turn you like a gunshot from Cormac McCarthy in Harry Crews' bar. For me the best songs are those with Kim Sherwood-Casio. Her clear, even beautiful voice, is an effective counterpoint to Dowds' ragged howls. At its best, she becomes Dowds' femme fatale, elevating things into true, and genuine Noirville. Listen to"Worried Mind" (my favorite), "When God Created Woman," and "Mystery Woman," are all good illustrations of why Robert Mitchum ("From Out of the Past") said, "build my gallows high." They are also some of the best songs I've heard in a while. Comparisons to others, especially Waits, are difficult to make. Perhaps with the (circus?) noise and instrumentation, but that's about it. Dowd is an original all right, and I'll just leave it at that.

5 out of 5 stars On the A List.......2004-01-09

Woody Guthrie meets Tom Waits - Johnny Dowd is one of the most unique and intriguing artists around today. "Pictures..." is quinessential Dowd, with dark lyric mixed with both country, folk, and rock melodies. My favorite album of his (and his extremely talented band) to date.

5 out of 5 stars ' ware do ya think yur goin son?.......2003-12-17

I'll let the individual 'songs' here sing/speak for themselves. This kinda music...warped country/folk/rural sing-song melodies about things best not mentioned, the underbelly of the everyday you and I can only imagine. His drawl will remind you of all the previous people mentioned...also throw in Leon Russell and Dr. John the Night Tripper. What elevates the music here are the off-beat backgroud sounds and vocal loops. Compared to the minimalist format of Wrong Side of Memphis...this cd as well as Temporary Shelter provide a greater density to the sinister under/overtones of his twisted worldview.

4 out of 5 stars Remarkable........2003-01-21

Dowd's first album, Wrong Side of Memphis, is good, but this, his second, is positively a revalation. Eschewing the determinedly low-fidelity nature of that affair, here he comes out swinging with a full band and a warped, creative production. It isn't perfect--the second half is, it must be noted, somewhat less consistent than the first--but it nonetheless represents another triumph for Our Man Johnny.

One of the most striking components of this album is the incomparable Kim Sherwood-Caso. She did backing lyrics for a few songs on Wrong Side of Memphis, but they weren't very prominent, and, although they did their job perfectly well, one didn't get the impression that any similar singer couldn't have done a comparable job. Here, however, she plays a much more prominent role, to dazzling effect. The first time you hear her bursting in on the choruses of 'Worried Mind' and 'God Created Woman,' it's like the end of the world, and her atmospheric contributions to other songs, if less immediately striking, are no less skillful.

But that's not all this album has to offer. Elsewhere, there's the unhinged raving of 'Butcher's Son.' There's the ethereal atmospherics of 'Vietnam.' There's the quiet, unsettling 'hidden' track. And of course there's 'Just Because.' You may at first think is just sort of goofy, but when you have the chorus stuck in your head for days on end, you'll be singing a different tune. And it features the line "woman loves a man like morphine loves pain." Right on.

Amazingly, it would get even better on Dowd's third album, Temporary Shelter. Nevertheless, Pictures from Life's Other Side is a remarkable piece of work. If you like a bit of ominous weirdness in your music, it's a sure thing.

5 out of 5 stars Songs For Swingin' (From A Noose) Lovers!.......2002-11-30

The first time I listened to this cd I did not give it the respect it deserved. I was doing various chores around my apartment, only half-listening to what was coming out of the speakers. After a few songs I shrugged it off as one I'd bought out of curiousity and put on another cd. A couple of months later I picked up Bloodshot's 5 year anniversary collection and was knocked all around the room by his duet with Kim Sherwood Caso on Hell or High Water. I decided to give Pictures From Life's Other Side another listen. It soom became clear what an idiot I had been to dismiss it as I had done. This time the discovery of a major artist with his own unique interpretation of rural American music rang joyously in my ears.

Dowd seems to draw a lot of comparisons to Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. In a way these are apt comparisons, especially Waits. But more than anything they are meant to indicate that the lesser known Dowd's work is equal to that of some our most respected singer/songwriters who are famous for dealing explicitly with dark themes. But where Cave, Cohen and Waits have established original and justly celebrated voices for themselves over decades of achievement, Dowd entered the music business with his first album in 1997 at the age of fifty. Making up for lost time, Dowd has recently released his fourth album, The Pawnbroker's Wife, while gaining a devoted following, touring and appearing on such worthwhile projects as the Bloodshot double cd as well as the recent Lee Hazelwood tribute album.

Pictures From Life's Other Side kicks off with the title track, perhaps the most creative reinterpretation of a Hank Williams, Sr. song ever released. It begins with Dowd as a sort of stoned carny inviting you over to his tent and as soon as you've settled into this landscape it veers off into an absolutely scorching rocker. At no point does this ever sound like a starched, reverent reading of a classic from our beloved Hank...and yet it captures his haunted spirit better than all but the great man's own recordings.

The one-two punch of I Hope You Don't Mind & God Created Woman are also standout tracks that serve as a perfect blueprint for Dowd's take on romance. The former is a sinsiter rewrite of the blues staple Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl. Except that this time all of the bluster has been violently stripped away and we are left in the profoundly uneasy company of an aged man who states his obsession with a child in the scariest terms imagineable.

God Created Woman is, love gone wrong subject matter aside, a far more gleeful affair. Kim Sherwood Caso's contributions to Dowd's music simply cannot be overstated. Her voice compliments his world view to a tee while providing a welcome counterbalance at the same time. Here she sings a desperate plea for her lover to "meet me in the parking lot/up on level three/there's something I must show you/there's something you've just got to see." These lines, as sung by Caso, are filled with an ache so unfathomable that it has folded into a detached, narcotic drone and listening to it gives you a palpable sense of danger. The person who is singing this is capable of awful things.

Another revelatory track is the spoken word performance of No Woman's Flesh But Hers. All I can say is that I honestly thought I was going to have to sleep under my bed with the lights on after hearing this the first few times. No song has ever scared me as badly. I loved it!

Pictures From Life's Other Side isn't as consistent as Temporary Shelter (my favorite) or as varied as The Pawnbroker's Wife but it is an important step in the development of one of the most interesting and talented artists to emerge on the music scene in the past ten years. You may have to do some work to eventually sink into his world, but it is an incredibly rewarding adventure I promise you!

Based on Somerset Maugham's middling novel Theater, Annette Bening stars as the title character, an aging star of the London stage whose life and the melodramas she performs have come to mirror each other. Composer Mychael Danna sets those conflicts to a score that emphasizes theatrical surfaces and rigid role-playing, utilizing a finely honed classical pastiche approach with parallels to his previous period-evoking work on Vanity Fair. His cues here are rooted in the light romantic chamber music of the 19th century, though they frequently bristle with a more contemporary energy and aplomb. Offering counterpoint to Danna's dignified, oft-precious classical confections and mining the story's more sensual human dimensions are pop chestnuts from the era (The Andrews Sisters' saucy "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and Mills Brothers' jaunty "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries"), as well as fine contemporary takes of "They Didn't Believe Me" and Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy" by Denzel Sinclair and Alison Jicar's elegant read of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful melody but lacks variety.......2005-04-11

Being Julia OST has a beautiful main melody which occurs over and over again throughout the tracks. I especially like "Curtain Up" and "Quite Alone". However, Being Julia OST doesn't have other strong melody to show along side with the main melody which seems a little too simple for a complete album. The movie is great too. Annette Bening's performance is outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing.......2007-01-27

I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Collection of Favorites!!!.......2003-07-02

The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!

5 out of 5 stars "The First".......2007-04-15

Greetings,

I am one of the few who actually got to see "The First" -- a musical about Jackie Robinson.

I do not have this CD but wish it had the title song from "The First" ...don't think it exists anywhere. I actually still remember some dialogue/lyrics from it and would like to hear it/read the words again.
I also would like to know if any version or scenes from the play are available to do in a school. Anybody?
Have a nice day!

4 out of 5 stars MISSGYDER TOTALLY MISGUIDED.......2004-07-21

This is not so much a review as a rebuttal; I was the orchestrator for this album, MISSGYDER's assertion of totally synthesized sound is totally incorrect: the charts were played by 4 reeds, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, harp, percussion, drums, keyboards, and a string section. I sorry the sound didn't meet the approval of the reviewer labeled MISSGYDER, but I can testify to the reality of the orchestra, the players, and my scores which are at the Library of congress.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs from not-so-great musicals.......2003-04-19

I was given this for my birthday, along with Unsung Sondheim, my favorite composer. I was excited, and a little bit skeptical because I've NEVER heard of these musicals. Once I started though, I was hooked. I want sheet music to so many, they're fun to sing along to, or just to listen to they great singer/actresses they got. My personal favorites are Smile, Sherry, Ragtime Romeo, and Silverware. I recommend this for all Broadway Babies and theatre buffs like me!

3 out of 5 stars Poor Production Ruins Good Product.......2001-05-15

Unsung Musicals is a great idea, presenting songs from shows that didn't get their due on Broadway. However, the production of this CD is very poor, using poorly synthesized instruments and cheesy drum tracks. I could have recreated these sounds using a home software program, they're so bad! The songs themselves are good, but the album is so horrid in terms of listening value that you'd be embarrased to put this in your CD player. I recommend this CD only for students and professionals in the music theatre world as a way to learn songs you wouldn't normally hear, but other than that, I can't recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Unsung perhaps, but often wonderful.......2001-02-14

Just because a musical was not successful, that doesn't mean that there were no good songs in it (pardon the double negative). These selections may be songs that are not well known from shows in the same category, but some of these are real gems, sung by fine show singers. My favorites are "Smile" (from Smile), "Ragtime Romeo" (The Vamp), "Sherry!" (Sherry!), and "She's Roses" (Drat! The Cat!).

4 out of 5 stars A very good, not classic, hip-hop DJ set - you'll probably like it a lot! - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-12

DJ Vadim's "U.S.S.R.: Life From the Other Side" is a very good DJ set, but I couldn't call it classic. One reason for this is that a lot of the songs are just "ok", and that there aren't any great songs or interesting new ideas here. These two factors are key. However, it's at least good to note that if you like hip-hop DJ sets you'll still like it a lot (but you probably won't miss it if you lost it is what I'm saying it). There are certainly a good number of cool songs here including "It's Obvious", "Viagra" and other such songs, but they're relatively derivative. Also, Vadim himself isn't the best rapper in the world as he could use a little work (he isn't bad, but he could be better). The production is pretty good here, although, again, nothing new is presented brought to the table. My favorite parts are probably the interludes - they're usually very very fun to listen to. Overall, I think that if you like hip-hop then there's a good chance that you'll really like this. Vadim's problem is that this lacks a truly great song. All things aside, however, I'd still highly recommend it!

Highlights include:
everything except "Your Revolution" (this one annoys me)
