Customer Reviews:
wonderful music...horrible recording.......2003-10-10
I had this recording in vinyl and have loved it for a long time. I sold all my albums years ago and have slowly replaced the best ones (I had a LOT of vinyl so it's taken a long time). I cannot recall whether the sound quality was particularly bad on the elpee. But this "remastered" version sounds like a bootleg, especially on the cover songs which had appeared on side 2 of the album. The mix is VERY spotty and uneven, and the sound is muddy in a lot of places. Perhaps Castle Records didn't have much to work with...after all, it's a 25 year old master tape of a live concert (not sure how much of a difference that makes). The CD is still worth having though, if only for the thrill (no kidding) of listening to the first three cuts. They are truly awesome.
Few musicians are as talented and complete as Todd Rundgren...he's a great vocalist, guitarist and composer as well as a visionary. None of his best songs sound the least bit dated (even though many are 25 or 30 years old) because they are so well crafted.
I was present for this recording........2003-05-29
This live recording was culminated from a series of concerts that Utopia performed during August of 1975. [...] this is an actual live album. Whether or not crowd noises were mixed in the studio is subject to discussion however I was present during this particular song. As a matter of fact, it was festival seating, we were there very, very early and Todd exited the stadium prior to the opening with an attractive girl, they took a walk along the Ohio river alone, he spoke to us when leaving and returning to the stadium. Very cordial and I still feel badly for my inebriated behavior during the show. You know how it is when you are young and stupid. This album has been one of my favorites since it's release. I also have the vinyl release on Bearsville Records.
Hey All, How's the Sound???????.......2003-02-24
I have the original CD and love it. I wonder if Bernstein ever thought about "Something's Coming" sounding like this. But my favorite is "Heavy Metal Kids" which just CRANKS-Todd must have been channeling Ted Nugent or something.
BUT would someone please comment if the remastering actually sounds better?
Where Was It Really Recorded?.......2002-08-21
In the other reviews, at least three writers claim the show that was recorded on this CD was in their town. Please let me set the record straight! Todd used sound effects records to create the audience noise, so I wonder what the other reviewers had for breakfast that day!
If anyone saw Todd perform with "A Walk Down Abbey Road" this year, or last, they will know what he can do with a cover song.
Many fans say "Todd is Godd", but personally, I am pushing for Saint-hood!
Another Live Review.......2002-02-25
I'm actually still waiting to find this treasure on CD; however, I still spin this gem on my turntable! I was first liberated by Todd with the 1974 release of Todd Rundgren's Utopia. From instrumental challenges and goose bump-driving guitar solos to heart pounding piano stretches, this orchestration puts a visual choreography into one's mind while listening. The experimentation of synthesizers mixed with Todd's incredible guitar licks and progressions is taken to another level with the 1975 release of Todd Rundgren's Utopia Another Live. This album was so exciting that it should have hit Broadway, with Mr. Triscuits and Something's Coming. Heavy Metal Kids is signature Todd Rundgren, and remains my favorite to this day! If you like(d) Todd's music from this era, you might also like Yes's Relayer from the same period (1974).

Essential Third Day.......2005-09-22
A lot of things can go wrong with a live DVD. Get an uncomfortable venue or undesirable performance date, and you're pretty much stuck with a subpar recording. Luckily, all of this has been avoided on Third Day's most recent live DVD.
I catch Third Day every time they make it to the Pacific Northwest, and they never disappoint. This tour was no exception. Most of the songs are taken from their Wire cd, although they bring a few classics out as well. How many times has "My Hope Is You" been presented to the public as a live recording? Not enough--it's always a welcome addition, in my book. I have especially enjoyed the more funky, up-tempo version of "Black Bird", which was previously doomed to obscurity on their self-titled debut cd. This time it's got a lot more energy, and serves as a way to introduce everybody to the band.
If you're a Third Day fan, you'll enjoy this one. Mac's vocals are on the money. The band is effortlessly tight. These guys are such pros by now, they make it look easy.
A Great Way to See Them Again.......2005-03-15
I got to see Third Day twice last year (2004), once in Phoenix, Arizona and then later that fall in Columbus, Ohio. Both of those shows were in big arenas, so I enjoyed the smaller scale and intimacy of the Louisville show featured in the DVD of this package.
The sound and picture are both great. A must-have for any Third Day fan. It's a little pricey, but I'll probably buy some copies for friends as gifts (or just a way of introducing them to Third Day).
A good way to see what they're like live.......2005-02-14
Overall I give this package 5 stars as the music is great and it's always good to see them live but there are a couple things that keep from giving it 5 enthusiastic stars. First of all, the price. $25 is an awful lot these days. If you compare the price to other live dvd and cd packages I think you'll find this one about $5 more and in some cases as much as $10 more. The second small complaint I have is that there's only 9 live tunes (and 1 studio track) on the music disc. It's just an opinon but if it's going to be a true live album shouldn't it be the full limit of what the disc can hold? I've seen third day a couple times in concert and can attest to the fact that they play at least 76 minutes (the max amount of space for a music cd) I would of liked to have more music.
A part from those complaints I think any Third Day fan will be happy with the overall package. The music is great and the dvd is great and worth the money, even if it is a little more than I'd like.
The CD is alright, but get it for the DVD,.......2004-12-10
Since the spring of this year, Third Day have supported their latest studio release "Wire," with the "Live Wire Tour." The July 22 show in Louisville, Kentucky was taped for this CD/DVD package titled "Live Wire." I will say I do wish there could have been some more songs included, especially on the CD, which contains 9 live tracks, plus one new studio cut, "Thank You All," a tribute to the fans. Seven of the 9 live tracks are songs from Wire, plus "Sing A Song" (from Offerings II) and "Blackbird", from the band's first album. What you do get here sounds very good, it's a great recording of a very good live show. But the real reason to get "Live Wire" is the DVD, the band's third live DVD. In addition to all of the songs from the CD, the DVD contains 4 more songs--"Consuming Fire," "My Hope is You," "Show Me Your Glory" and "You Are Mine." The DVD also contains a rockumentary, a video for "Thank You All," photos, a promo trailer and a World Vision video package ("Offering"). The "Live Wire" set is a great concert package from Third Day, but I will say you'll want to get it more for the DVD than the CD.
Great Package.......2004-12-06
I just bought this GREAT CD/DVD package. A Friend of mine went to the concert which was in Louisville, Kentucky. I wish I was able to of gone, he did bring me back an Autographed Drum head by David Carr. Well, anyways this is a really good buy for any Hardcore Third Day fan.

A Greatest Hits Collection, Live.......2005-06-22
This live album captures most of what dnc is about. Mixing heavy rock with folk/country numbers, like a weird mix of the Dictators and John Denver, Kevn Kinney and his bandmates rip through nearly 20 of their greatest hits, warts and all. The band, with help from Joey Huffman on organ and David Franklin on guitar, is typically rough and spontaneous, delivering blistering versions of classics such as "The Innocent," "Build a Fire," "Straight to Hell" and the great unreleased song "Dirty Angels." The only weakness derives from the track list, which evinces the band's intention in making this a "greatest hits" affair. Some of the songs, such as "Honeysuckle Blue" and "Scarred but Smarter" don't come off very well here, but as "greatest hits" they're indispensable. In short, a less predictable track list featuring more rarities would have made this fan happier. But if you like rough performances from earnest bands or remember fondly waking up with ringing ears, a hangover, and the stale cigarette smoke in your clothes after a night with dnc, you'll like this one.
Fun night at Liz Reeds.......2005-05-31
I worked at Elizabeth reed Music Hall in Macon where some of this album was recorded. In my 5 years of working at this once great venue, Drivin N Cryin was one of my favorite live acts. This Disc captures the band very well. Kevin and the boys know how to rock. I miss the band and the venue. ....Im pretty sure I can hear myself yell.."Get used to it!!...Its an awsome disc..just like all their albums are...DC Liz Reeds 08/94 to 10/99
Excellent live album ..........1999-10-21
As a rule, I've eschewed "live" albums. However, my knowledge of DNC's strengths performing live pushed me just enough so that I purchased "Essential Live." I was NOT disappointed. This quite possibly is the best live album I've heard. By "best" I mean that it accurately portrays what it's like to see DNC live. The production is great; and each song warrants playing over and over.
DNC, see you in Murfreesboro, TN, and on Thanksgiving!
Play this one loud on a good sound system, and you're there!.......1999-09-29
This album is second only to seeing DNC live yourself. The quality of recording is excellent, and really captures Kevn Kinney's guitar punch. Finally, an album that totally captures this great rock band's potential. I personally was at the Atlanta show (one of the three represented on this album), and am now ready to see them again ASAP!
This album shows how great DNC is live.......1999-09-28
This Album shows how a Band from Atlanta can really rock at a live venue. I have followed the band for many years now, This is a true album that shows how a great band sounds live without a lot of noise interfearance. Anyone from Atlanta and the south knows the band and has more than likely seen the band before and this album has tracks from all the albums we love. In other words, BUY THIS LIVE ALBUM!

NOT CARPENTER'S ORIGINAL SCORE...IT'S A HACK JOB..........2005-12-04
What a piece of ****. Do not buy this worthless CD. If you are a fan of John Carpenter's scores, you will not like this. Don't waste your money like I did...And the only reason it got one star is because you can't give it any less!
not for fans of carpenter's scores.......2004-12-03
like other reviewers said, this is someone else playing those classic carpenter tunes. sometimes it sounds like elevator music. unfortunately, the cover doesn't say anything about this piece of work...
Essential what?.......2003-07-08
As the previous reviewer noted, nowhere on this CD does it indicate that the 'Essential John Carpenter' is someone re-recording all of the famous cues. Naturally all the info is on the inside.
And the disc? I don't see the point in bothering. They might as well make Assault on Precinct 13, Dark Star, and They Live (which pretty much don't have scores in print anymore) available again, even if they have to combine a couple to make one disc.
Carpenter does not use orchestras or elaborate bands for his scores. He does most of it himself and that makes another Carpenter collection simple. It's not difficult to play the notes, but everything is just slightly off and after a while you wonder what's the point.
This is NOT the music from the Carpenter films you love. This is someone playing that music. Assault on Precinct 13, which provides most of the attraction of this pretty worthless disc, sounds lousy and has none of the life of the throbbing synth of the original. Not only that, but they have the nerve to throw in two (2) cues from Starman, a Carpenter film that he didn't do his own music for(!) Instead the disc is broken by the Jerry Goldsmith pieces that sound NOTHING like anything Carpenter has done. It's bad--it belongs elsewhere, namely the Starman soundtrack which is still in print.
Stay away from this thing. It's a ripoff, another attempt to cash in on a name without providing any real product.
AVOID THIS IMITATION GARBAGE!!!!! FAKE CARPENTER.......2003-06-25
These jerks did a great job hiding the fact that these tracks are re-recorded by some schlep. Avoid this lame piece of garbage at all costs. The tones are totally wrong, it sounds very little like the genius originals. I bought this to get some of the Assault on Precinct 13 stuff, and was horrified to find that everything had been re-recorded. THIS IS NOT MENTIONED ON THE OUTER PACKAGING IN ANY WAY!!! You would never know until you open it and read the liners. Shame on these bastards for trying to dupe and rip people off. AVOID THIS [STUFF]!!!
"absolute in capturing the original scores".......2002-12-03
Hats off to Gareth Williams, James Fitzpatrick and Silva Screen Records for this venture into the world of John Carpenter. Silva has done a masterful job of recreating the feel of the original Carpenter film scores. This awesome compilation of "great thriller music" sends chills up our spines from composers Ennio Morricone, Jack Nitzsche, Dave Davies, Alan Howarth and of course John Carpenter. Each selection is arranged and performed with plenty of suspense dating back to 1974, which gave the audience a supernatural and imaginative fright. Each score paints the mood for every cue, which writer, producer and director Carpenter required...and then some.
Each score takes on a life of its own away from the film. If you've never seen any of the films, your imagination plays a key role interpreting what our legendary director/composer has up his sleeve when writing and directing the music. Entire album is a stand out ~ this one's for Carpenter and Silva fans alike, a collection for the first time with tremendours power and immediacy of each cue can now be heard. With Dolby Digital Surround Sound Recordings...this is a must have for your collection. All "film-score-buffs" beware, this is guranteed to give your goosebumps on the very first track, gotta love it!

peter cetera at his best.......2006-10-01
peter cetera is an awesome singer if at 60 years of age he can still hit those high marks with precision if your a peter cetera fan like me pick this album up you wont regret it all though the orchestra does sometime sound like its muffled other than that small gripe it is still an awesome cd
sappy love songs.......2006-09-14
The compositions, Rhythms and singin-style of Peter Cetera sound always the same. He is a typical sappy love song - singer who prefers the love ballads and cheesy love adventures.
it might have been a bit tedious and boring.
The problem is everywhere: If you are a Hardrock fan like bands Uriah Heep, Stevie Ray Vaughan, AC/DC, Rory Gallagher, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, your ears can't be familar with all these silly love songs. My ears cannot work like that.
there are two alternatives:
- if you are a hardrock fan. You like a mythological lyrics, you won't like Peter Cetera or Chicago. Keep your fingers away from this !!!
- if you are a sappy love song fan then please buy this cd !!!
Poor recording of a great concert..........2006-08-02
I'll agree with the reviewer who called it his review "great artist; poor recording". I bought this hoping for the same great performance I saw on PBS but the recording process was just terrible for this concert in Salt Lake, UT. The concert music sounded very far away and when Peter Cetera's voice climaxed, the audio muffled which was very annoying for me. The recording wasn't as clear as it was from his television performance which has me thinking the recording process is what is terrible.
A Pleasant Surprise!.......2004-12-26
Unlike the previous reviewer, I believe this is quite a good CD. There is one problem; you can't actually hear the orchestra on some of the tracks, which is a shame, because they make the songs pretty classy. I'm a diehard Chicago fan, and I've been upset with Cetera for seemingly distancing himself from his former bandmates. However, it's nice to hear him doing some old Chicago songs, mixed in with his solo stuff. Cetera's voice earns this CD a four-star rating from me. I've never heard him do much in the way of live stuff, and I'm impressed by his still-impressive singing voice; he manages to hit even the high stuff here. Now, if only he would get back with Chicago...
Great Artist, Poor recordings.......2004-12-16
It is sad to listen to this poor quality recording of Peter Cetera live in Salt Lake.
I wonder if he did listen to this cd because if he did, he would fire his sound-crew immediately. Because the songs supported by the symphony orchestra are special and well performed, it is a shame that this product is sold. And even a bigger shame on Peter Cetera who's recordings normally have a 5 star rating.
Sorry Peter.

(or is it possible that this cd has been dubbed in the wrong way..?)
