Dreaming My Dreams

As Jennings introduces the live take of "Bob Wills is Still the King" that closes this otherwise studio-bound album, one rowdy audience member yells a drunken affirmation. Or maybe something else, given that Jennings breaks off mid-sentence, seemingly ready to leap into the crowd and open a Texas-size can of whup-ass on the guy. That he doesn't--and gives a smoking read of the song instead--is emblematic of the success of 1975's Dreaming My Dreams. Not yet having succumbed to the overblown boasts of "I've Always Been Crazy" that sold millions of records later in the decade, he's content here to wryly look askance at the Nashville establishment and his reputation as an "outlaw" and sing a couple of sweet love songs, all while playing plenty of tasty rhythm guitar. A keeper, and one of the most welcome CD reissues in years. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars WAYLON'S BEST ! (according to the man himself).......2007-04-15

Dreaming My Dreams was released in 1975, a couple of years after Waylon Jennings, country outlaw, had wrestled away artistic control of his music from the Nashville establishment. It was recorded in long time friend Neil Diamond's "very cozy" upstairs recording studio. The first song is the electric guitar rocking, autobiographical Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way.

Somebody told me when I came to Nashville,
"Son, you've finally got it made.
Ol' Hank made it here and we're all sure that you will",
But I don't think Hank done it this way.

Waylon then gets reflective with Don Williams' Gypsy Woman. This is one of Waylon's best songs. Waylon's raspy baritone gives the impression of a big man who has lived life the hard way, but still stands tall and is ready for more (all were true). His voice also had a persuasive vulnerability that has won listeners over for decades. It's easy to identify with his struggles, and easy to want to stand in his corner. There's a excellant version of Roger Miller's I've Been A Long Time Leaving (But I'll Be A Long Time Gone) included here, too. The Door Is Always Open was a hit for the two girl, one guy trio, Dave and Sugar, but the song seems like it was written for Waylon.

When night falls on that mansion and you're lying in his bed
When he begs you for attention, will you think of me instead
When he reaches out to touch you, is your face turned to the wall
Well, the door is always open, and the lights on in the hall.

The title track is Waylon at his most tender, but this guy never gets mushy. Not Waylon, not ever. He gets back into rowdy form, with a live version of Bob Wills Is Still The King. Waylon's dominating vocal performance sounds great, and even though it's the only live song on the album, it fits right in. He had said Dreaming My Dreams was his favorite of all his albums, and it's easy to see why. This was Waylon Jennings at the top of his game.

5 out of 5 stars Simple truth.......2006-10-15

The title track, Dreaming my dreams with you, is as fine as a sad country song gets.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for Waylon? Here it is........2006-05-11

This is indeed, Waylon at his best. Buy it now, go ahead! Do it with 1 click! You will not be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Dreaming my Dreams Title Track is divine longing.......2005-09-01

I grew up listening to Waylon and his buddies and all the crazy eclectic things my parents liked (Peter Paul & Mary, John Denver, Willie, Merle, Glen Campbell). This album is essential Waylon, IMHO; if you want to understand him in basics, this is it. It speaks to his roots, musical background, his influence on Nashville and Country Music [back when it was still Country and Western Music] and should be required listening.

The title track is one my favorite all time songs; Waylon's black hole deep baritone is hauntingly gorgous and painfully longing.

5 out of 5 stars What does it say on your shirt?.......2005-07-08

Some records are so perfect there's not a second you'd want to fade or edit out. This was my introduction to Waymore, many years ago. I had the good fortune to discover him via someone who had a number of his records so it was a real eye-opener to find a singer I'd never heard of with a back catalogue of such high quality. I love the record for a number of reasons: the voice; the musicians; the songs, but more than anything else it was memorable for showing me a country band could SWING. It's not rock or blues or jazz but it has it's own feel and, of course, caused me to check out the likes of Bob Wills - not exactly a household name in the United Kingdom. Waylon was making good records til he died, but he never improved on this. Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Parent's blessing!.......2004-01-02

I have two of these cd's. My kids are 2 and 4 and I bought the first cd when my daughter was a newborn. These have been a true blessing and most evenings, put ME to sleep along with my daughter as I'm getting her settled and to sleep. SOO soothing and relaxing.......just beautiful. The original cd had gotten a scratch on one song so I'm here on Amazon trying to buy yet another one. Great just to play when the kids are wound up just to sooth them.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Snooze..........2002-10-24

This compilation of songs is most restful for both the young and old. I received this CD as a gift years before the birth of my daughter and I used it's calming effect while studying calculus.

While working in a daycare this CD had twenty 3-5 year old children fast asleep within minutes. Very cool!

I just purchased a new copy of this CD as the old one is scratched and worn out. I now look forward to sharing this soothing music with my newborn baby girl. ****I highly recommend this CD for putting your little one to sleep.****

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL - if only it was available.......2002-08-19

As a highly active amateur cellist, this is my signature baby gift to all friends and family - all have commented at it's soothing effect when played at naptime or bedtime. This is a wonderful collection, well-played - BUT IT'S NEVER AVAILABLE. I'm now on a constant search to find used copies. I can only hope that they get back on the ball and restart production on this CD - so that all of you can enjoy it!!

5 out of 5 stars Get two so you can give one as a gift..........2001-11-07

This CD is made up of instrumental cello renditions of popular lullabyes.

My wife and I have given several of these CD's to parents of young children in the US and abroad. Without exception, the soothing cello tunes help mother and child alike to relax at the end of a busy day.

Webber performs sensitive interpretations of these long-beloved classics, including Braham's Lullabye and Rock a Bye Baby. The cuts provide wonderful comfort to a stressed world. My wife and I listen happily while reading and sitting in front of the crackling fire.

We love this album and are ordering 6 so we have some on hand for gifts to new mothers.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully performed soothing, calming music.......1999-03-19

Julian Webber performs masterfully in this relaxing collection of peaceful lullabies. His technique is superb, and this CD will leave you snoring soundly if you play it at night, like I do.

5 out of 5 stars An Audiophile, Earthy - Alison Krauss / String Quartet.......2005-10-28

This CD was the deciding factor for me to buy Von Schweigert VM1 Monitors with Subwoofer. There is just so much warmth, musicality, nuance and emotion. In some ways better than the original. Better in the sense that the String Quartet transports you to a new yet familiar world. So it is a combination of Bluegrass, Classical and Jazz. A must have album for Audiophiles, fans of Alison Krauss and for those exploring new forms of music.

5 out of 5 stars Triple shot of prime Waylon.......2005-10-14

BMG U.K.'s 2-disc set pulls together three prime Jennings LPs: 1974's "This Time" and "The Ramblin' Man" and 1975's "Dreaming My Dreams." Though he'd recorded fine albums before, and would record more in following years, this triple-shot represents the core of Jennings time as an outlaw country artist, and an unmatched trifecta. "This Time" has a slightly muted energy, almost as if Jennings was taking a breath between the outburst of "Honky Tonk Heroes" and the pair of albums that would follow. This is the most soulful and introspective mood Jennings ever got down on record, and the presence of Willie Nelson (as writer of four songs, co-producer and electric guitarist) is strongly felt throughout.

"The Ramblin' Man" expands on the unruly outlaw spark of "Honky Tonk Heroes," and the follow-on "Dreaming My Dreams" combines the best aspects of its predecessors - both irascible and soulful. This third LP is the most eclectic of the lot, ranging from Jennings' hardcore country anthems ("Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way?" "Bob Wills is Still the King") to the Jack Clement scored strings of the title tune. Ralph Mooney's fine steel playing is heard throughout all three albums, each of which is filled with hits and equally worthy album sides.

This double-CD also includes most of the bonus tracks that appeared on BMG's U.S. reissues, including the five tracks recorded in 1973 with Jerry Allison and Sonny Curtis of the Crickets. Completists might opt for the individual CDs (specifically to get two more bonus tracks: "All Around Cowboy" and "Ride Me Down Easy"), but you'd be hard to beat this collection's triple-shot of prime Jennings, complete with detailed liner notes and credits and several choice photos. 5 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to Waylon and acquire these albums.......2004-07-20

I'm a slow convert to a country fan. I bought my first Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline record probably six years ago. I only came around to the Outlaw stuff recently. My loss. These Waylon Jennings albums aren't so different from some of the more country leaning rock albums of the time. Waylon had an amazing voice and was a great interpreter of songs, he also is one of the few country stars who should be heard on an album to album basis, rather than singles. Here are three of finest from the classic Outlaw period bundled together for a good price.

This Time is probably the mellowest of three, and features several great takes on Willie Nelson songs. Its an indisputable classic. Dreaming My Dreams is equally revered and perhaps Jennings' most avowedly Outlaw leaning album. Finally, Ramblin' Man is the most outwardly rockingly and grandiose. It doesn't tend to get quite the accolades of the other two but to me is every bit as good. On it as polar opposites is one the finest uptempo Country songs (Rainy Day Woman) and the most heartbreaking ballad (Amanda).

Its also important that this "boxed set" is merely a package of the three albums as they're not haphazardly thrown on two CDs, brekaing up the flow. Finally, the bonus tracks scattered across the albums gives one an idea of just how diverse of music Waylong was putting out during this period. If you're going to become a Waylon you're going to need all of thse albums eventually. This is the most efficient way to do it. Essential.

5 out of 5 stars Waylon from 1973 to 1975.......2003-04-05

This double-CD is made up of three original albums, plus some tracks that were recorded but never released, most of which were Buddy Holly covers. Some of these eventually appeared in a medley on another Waylon album, I've always been crazy.

The first album, This time, shows a strong Willie Nelson influence. Willie wrote four of the songs (Pick up the tempo, Heaven or hell, It's not supposed to be that way and Walkin'), while he has also recorded at least two of the others (Slow moving outlaw and If you could touch her at all). The title track provided Waylon with his first number one country hit.

The second album, Rambling man, contains some interesting songs, especially Midnight rider (a cover of a Gregg Allman songs) and Amanda (first recorded by Don Williams), a song that eventually became a country number one when it was released as a single several years later in 1979. In 1974, I'm a rambling man was Waylon's second country number one, while Rainy day women (written by Waylon himself) just missed out, peaking at number two. Other notable songs such as Oklahoma sunshine, Cloudy days, It'll be her and The hunger make this one of Waylon's finest albums ever.

The third album, Dreaming my dreams, is another high-quality album. You might even prefer it to Rambling man, but in any case, there's not much to choose between them for quality. Although the title track was a top ten country hit, the album's most famous songs are the two odes to past legends - Are you sure Hank done it this way (a country number one) and Bob Wills is still the king. Also worthy of mention are I recall a gypsy woman (originally a British top 20 pop hit for Don Williams, but not released as a single in America), The door is always open (a country number one for Dave and Sugar) and Let's turn back the years (an obscure Hank Williams song).

So, this collection brings together three of Waylon's finest albums and several previously unreleased tracks. If you are unfamiliar with Waylon's music, you might be better to buy RCA country legends, a double-CD containing all his big hits, but for those wanting to buy his original albums, it doesn't get any better than this.

The songs, in particular 'Dreaming My Dreams' and the very moving voice of Marianne Faithful, open a window to an other worlds and place a mirror to your own inner world and enable you to see a ray of light through the darkness.

5 out of 5 stars Transition album.......2005-01-04

This album is a reissue of the original Dreaming My Dreams of 1977, with the four extra tracks that constituted the Faithless album. It is her transition from 1960s folkie to the rock singer of the 1980s. In a way it was Marianne Faithfull's comeback album (after 1971's mostly acoustic Rich Kid Blues) and the lost years, which first displayed her new voice that would later emerge to dramatic effect on the seminal album Broken English. The style is pure country and country-pop, and the songs are all tuneful and memorable.

Almost every track is hit single stuff, from the yearning Dreaming My Dreams through Jackie DeShannon's buoyant pop ditty Vanilla O'Lay to the sad ballad I'm Not Lisa. Lady Madeleine was Faithfull's elegy to a friend, as she explains in her autobiography Faithfull (co-written with David Dalton). Her interpretations of I'll Be Your Baby Tonight and Honky Tonk Angels are quite authentically country, whilst That Was The Day (Nashville) is almost a form of ber-country in its dramatic intensity and memorable imagery.

The melodies are strong throughout, and two highlights are the uptempo All I Wanna Do In Life and the ballad The Way That You Want Me To Be. This album was a huge hit in Ireland in the late 1970s and its success gave Marianne the confidence to re-establish her singing career. Soon after, classic works like Broken English, Dangerous Acquaintances and A Child's Adventure followed; these brought her critical acclaim as a rock (as opposed to folk) singer and formed the foundation for her always accomplished work up to today.

This album is to country what Van Halen I was to rock. Gritty, pure and from the soul, Jennings spans the spectrum from western swing in "Bob Wills is Still The King" to waltz/polka in "Waymore's Blues." Undeniably "outlaw" in nature, "Dreamin My Dreams" reflects the Waylon we wish we knew. Remember Elvis on Ed Sullivan? This is Waylon's lean, mean, yet tender duplicity that holds the banner of true country music that Brooks, McGraw, Byrd, and the other fill-in-the-blanks can only dream of.

5 out of 5 stars waylon jennings premier stamp of artistic excellence.......1999-02-07

Dreaming My Dreams is probaly the most perfectly producedrecording made in the last 30 years. (Save Freddie Hart) This collection finds Waylon pushing the envelope in his search for the perfect high and then shifting gears to a troughy baritone seemingly to eminate from the dungeon of his soul. These compositions rise above kicking *** and taken names.

5 out of 5 stars This album is in a class all by itself.......1998-10-30

No one, I repeat, no one has recorded a country album with more drive, grit and determination than Waylons' "Dreaming My Dreams". If albums were compared to champagne, this would most definetely be the Dom Perignon of country music. From beginning to end songs such as the title track, Bob Wills is Still the King and I've Been a Long Time Leaving are pure classics. This album is heads above anything Waylon had done previously and definetely his material since then. I've always enjoyed Waylon and he seems to have gotten better each year since his arrival on the music scene. This is definetely the pinnacle of all his works and if you're a Waylon fan this is a absolute must, if you're not a Waylon fan or have been one of the few and unlucky ones who have never heard him...get it! You will not be sorry. This is without a doubt the best country and western album thats ever been made and maybe the only one that ever will be.

4 out of 5 stars Best Waylon Album to Own.......1998-09-18

Classic Waylon Jennings, recorded during the "outlaw" period, this CD has "Dreaming My Dreams With You" and "I've Been A Long Time Leaving", two of Waylon's best ballads, and the immortal "Bob Willis Is Still The King" tribute. Hey Jessie, pass me that Lone Star Beer...

5 out of 5 stars The best Waylon ever made........1998-08-24

Since I first heard this album, I have worn out and passed on to my friends about 6 or 7 album copies and 3 8-tracks. Every time I ever ran across a copy I would buy it. I went to a Waylon concert in Atlanta just over a year ago and I ran into Jack Clement in the audience. He was the producer of Dreaming My Dreams and I asked him why they never put it on a CD. He said he didn't know. Well here it is! About time.

5 out of 5 stars Why we love Waylon's music.......2006-01-14

These 3 albums are a perfect example of how great Waylon's music is. They have plenty of "Hits" cd's out there, but if you wanna hear great music, start here. There's so much most haven't heard before. Give a listen to "Low Down Freedom", "Omaha", "Cloudy Days", "Okalahoma Sunshine", "Memories Of You And I", "Got Alot Going For Me", "High Time", "I've Been A Long Time Leaving". Grab this, or the individual releases, you'll be glad you did. One note of caution though, this will lead to the purchase of other cd's.

5 out of 5 stars Waylon - when he was the greatest.......2002-02-14

After reading of Waylon Jenning's all too early death this morning, I will spend the evening listening to some of his very best albums. On this cd thay have gathered three great albums from the early seventies. Two of them, "Honky Tonk Heroes" and "Dreaming My Dreams", are his very best ever. These records are the essence of the country outlaw sound. Hard country with minimal, bone dry arrangements that fit the songs and serve Waylon's expressive voice equally well. And what songs he sang! His buddy Billy Joe Shaver wrote almost all the songs on "Honky Tonk Heroes" and together they brought country back to the roots: storytelling, realism and harsh poetry in the spirit of Hank Williams. "Ramblin' Man" is also a wonderful record but this cd would have been even better if the third choice were "This Time" or "Lonesome On'ry And Mean". But this is certainly an excellent package anyhow, giving us Waylon from a period (1972-1976) when he was simply the greatest country singer living. And now, sadly he is dead. Ride him down easy Lord.
