5 out of 5 stars Where have you all been??.......2007-05-13

Typically excellent music from JMT, an artisit gifted enough to produce beautiful music across several genres.

For the uninitiated and the misinformed out there, this is NOT JMT's third foray into rock or folk rock. He and his brother Terry helped pioneer the country rock sound, first through Mason Profitt and then through their initial venture into Christian music, The Talbot Brothers - Reborn (they out-Eagle the early Eagles on this one, and display harmonies that rival CSN&Y...hard to find but worth it). Following that, they went their separate ways, and John produced two excellent albums of trailblazing folk rock, the self-titled John Michael Talbot and its follow-up, The New Earth (again, hard to find but worth it). To me, these are the two albums that showcase his virtuoso skills. I mean, I love his meditative stylings and quieter music, too, but...if you can find it, give a listen to the original, revved up version of He Is Risen and be prepared to have your mind blown by his blazing acoustic stylings. And if you think he can wail on the guitar, you should hear him play the banjo! I proudly stack these two albums up against any other work by any other singer-guitarist of the late 60's, early 70's...Jackson Browne, Cockburn, Fogelberg, whoever...there may be some music just as good, but nothing surpasses it. Well, except for The Beatles and an occassional vocal and guitar flourish by the master, Phil Keaggy.

The Beautiful City isn't a foray into a new musical style...it's a return to what he started out doing 30 years ago. Oh...and if you can EVER find Terry's first two solo albums (No Longer Alone and Cradle of Love), be prepared to enjoy some of the finest country/folk/rock ever recorded. Please, whoever holds the rights to these fine records, let us have them back!

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat Booming for Baby Boomers.......2006-12-15

I am among many followers of John Michael Talbot. We reflected and prayed with all of his past ""cassettes." We are part of a Small Christian Community for many years. We have attended his concerts in our area. We regret that this particular recording is too jazzie for the Post Vatican II Boomers who ran off with the Church in the modern world. We would be interested if another age group related to this recording as much as we did in the 70's and 8o's. Then it surely is worth it! Thanks for the opportunity to share honestly as an elder Baptized Boomer! Jane 1946

5 out of 5 stars Funky Monk.......2006-11-07

My title comes from keyboardist Mike Lawler, who during these sessions dubbed John Michael Talbot the "funky monk". I could have also called it Monk Rock 2, but that would be somewhat misleading since Monk Rock was actually Talbot's second rock album, the first being Cave of the Heart, but The Beautiful City is the third. As much as I liked Monk Rock, that album's lyrics come mostly from the Mass, and as much as I like the Mass, I hoped Talbot would write some original rock songs. This he has done on The Beautiful City. And there was much rejoicing.

As with Monk Rock, one of the best parts is the extremely extensive booklet with lyrics and Talbot's song by song commentary. Talbot's brother and former partner in crime--I mean music-- in the band Mason Proffit, Terry Talbot co-wrote the title song and one of the other best songs, "Holy Man". Another great song is "Heal Me", but the standout is a catchy rocker, "God Thing" which screams for airplay (and would be just the thing to revive currently anemic radio). Talbot reaches back to his first solo recording on Sparrow Records (now EMI) from--get this-- 1976-- for "He is Risen", showing the continuity of his musical and spiritual journey.

I don't have a John Michael Talbot story, but here's my Terry Talbot story. Terry Talbot had just cut a solo album on Sparrow Records when he came to play at the college I was attending. I was very excited because he had a rock song I especially liked called "Hollywood Lies" at a time when rock was quite scarce on "contemporary" albums. I had just seen Clapton's "Cocaine" tour where rabid fans naturally greeted each song with flicked lighters, stomping feet and wild screams.

I felt bad that Terry had such a staid, well-behaved audience to play for, so with the first bars of "Hollywood Lies" I began wildly screaming "Whoooooo!" Whereupon he stopped playing and said something like, "Look man, I heard that for years in the world and now I've left that world behind." My roommates offered to beat him up (it was college) and predictably I fell silent. Then he stopped the concert again and said "Now this brother isn't even getting into it!"

The moral is don't yell during a Terry Talbot concert. However, on my side all is forgiven--and forgotten--notice I don't even remember it. I'm very excited to see how involved Terry is with helping John on these projects (and rumor has it Terry may resurrect Mason Profitt, one of the best country rock bands to hit these parts since I don't know when). Maybe the Brothers Talbot will do "Hollywood Lies" on a later rock album (hint hint). Oh yeah, and my opinion of this John Michael Talbot album? Whooooooooo!

5 out of 5 stars JMT Rocks.......2006-11-04

John Michael Talbot is in the "groove" again. True fans of CCM have to be lovin' it! The songs on Beautiful City are ALL well worth the listen. I especially appreciate the re-make of his classic, "He is Risen." Now that is some wonderfully aged wine.
JMT has spent a lot of his long career concentrating on quiet music for Sunday mornings. Now he is taking another crack at the music of Saturday night. BC and his former, recent release, Monk Rock (equally as good as this one!), reconnect his art, and those of us with ears to hear, to the early explosion of spiritual energy and grace of God associated with his original conversion to Christ. But his early Christian rock is augmented now by the benefit of years of reflection and Christian living.
Another very bright spot on this CD is to be found in the liner notes that hint at a possible future CD by the Talbot Brothers. That would be with JMT'S brother, Terry, who co-wrote the title song on BC. I hope that the Christian music community will show enough appreciation for BC to justify this future project and more. How about a "Saturday night" version of some of JMT'S quiet music? The Talbots appear to be able, ready and willing to show us once again that the "groove" can be a very Holy place.

4 out of 5 stars "The Beautiful City" continues John Michael Talbot's fascinating foray into the electric music heard on "Monk Rock".......2006-08-17

Changes can rejuvenate an artist's career. A new producer, a different sound, and unique collaborations have revitalized the work of different artists. John Michael Talbot has always had a steady and loyal following, but his latest work could serve to expand his fan base beyond those who favor his contemplative side. His desire to once again become proficient at playing the electric guitar has fueled his creative energy. Using rock and a full band sound has given birth to songs that go beyond acoustic boundaries.

This release is a little more sophisticated than Monk Rock. Some of the songs on Monk Rock consisted of chants or short songs lyrically. The lyrics and the production are more fully developed here. The sound is a little fuller and more polished. Subtle synthesized elements grace the music.

As on the prior release, there are multiple guitars and a lot of John Michael's layered harmonizing, which is always great.

The title song, a reference to New Orleans and the Katrina disaster, is one of several highlights. Previously it was only available as a digital download to benefit Katrina victims. Ironically, the song has a swirling and muddy mix, but it fits in well with the others on this recording. The driving music builds to a crescendo with lyrics describing the tragedy. It ends on a hopeful note with a beautiful background chorus of "She will rise again."

This and "Holy Man" were co-written by John Michael's brother Terry. In general, The Beautiful City is a more electrified and less acoustic and folksy version of the Talbot Brothers. One exception, "Love One Another," which is similar in sound to their Reborn days, is the most acoustic song on the recording. It's a wonderful piece of folk-pop with inspirational lyrics. Note to John Michael: please give us more of this. It's absolutely beautiful.

The sweet and quieter-sounding harmonizing on the chorus and the driving, classic rock of "Heal Me" make it one of the standouts.

In what seems to be a nod to the Cream classic, "Crossroads," John Michael sings, "I went down to the crossroads to see what I could find." Blues-rock chords that are reminiscent of the Cream song punctuate the words. Who would have guessed that John Michael would be sounding like Eric Clapton? The music on the song is a great fit with lyrics that play-up the imagery of Satan being a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. This is one of the strongest songs.

There is an ample amount of celebratory classic rock sprinkled with Jerry Lee Lewis-type piano playing or layered with the sounds of an organ. A couple of songs feature some subtle banjo playing. There are a number of blues-rock tunes, but minor keys are mostly absent. You won't find brooding and haunting here.

John Michael Talbot's career has never languished, but his foray into rock has given rise to new creative expression. This will no doubt expand his audience. But for those like me, who also enjoy his quiet side, let's hope that we also see more of that in the future. He may be at this best when he sings those simple, worshipful songs with stark arrangements. How much better can one get than songs like "The Magnificant: Prelude of Faith/Holy is His Name," "The Hiding Place," "Come Worship the Lord (Psalm 95)" and "I Am the Bread of Life"? For now, those who appreciate his musical and artistic genius can revel in this new phase of a long career--this is his 49th release.

3 out of 5 stars Monk Rock.......2007-01-24

I haven't listened to any John Michael Talbot for well over a decade. Really used to like "The Lords Supper". This is the music of the Mass in rock form. I enjoyed Monk Rock. It's worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars Rock Music with Simple but Inspiring Lyrics.......2005-09-11

This latest offering is very good, but more in the tradition of CAVE OF THE HEART than either Mason Proffit or other Talbot Brothers material, with one or two exceptions. "Spread the Good News" sounds a lot like material on John Michael Talbot's early, self-titled Sparrow LP, while there are moments reminiscent of the Grateful Dead. This CD may or may not be for those who prefer the softer side of his music, but it will do for those of us who enjoy Terry and John Talbot's earlier style and don't mind variety. The ministry value here is quite high, as the simple yet profound message continues to be proclaimed, and the musical quality is appealing.

4 out of 5 stars John Michael Proffit.......2005-08-30

The Mass has been set to numerous musical styles throughout history. As John Michael Talbot writes in the liner notes to "Agnus Dei," "The challenge was in finding an electric setting that did not do violence to the meaning of the text." Whether he succeeds the listener can decide, but note that he does not consider rock music per se inappropriate. Since the text consists of Scripture and the Mass (itself mostly Scripture), the unique approach lies in the music.
The latin song titles at first seem inaccessible, but they are sung in English (with some Spanish), and in the English versions are quite well known: "Kyrie": "Lord have mercy;" "Sanctus:" "Holy, holy, holy;" "Credo:" "I believe;" "Agnus Dei:" "Lamb of God." One reason for this familiarity was Talbot's 1978 album, The Lord's Supper, which put parts of the Mass in a folk-rock setting, became a best-seller, and was one influence of the contemporary praise movement.

One of the best things about this album is the booklet. Talbot is very much a musician's musician, and the liner notes let the rest of us in on the process of creating. The genesis of this album came when John's brother, Terry Talbot, brainstormed putting Mason Proffit back together. As the "silent partner" in a monastic community, John was showing him a few licks and just got hooked. When John told Phil Keaggy his idea, Phil wanted to play, and who doesn't know that Keaggy's best stuff is rock? (What about his seven minute plus rock epic, "Time"?) John wrote a song in the style of the Jesus Movement of the '70s, "people said it sounded 'fresh' or 'anointed' and it was all downhill from there."

John has a long songwriting history, from the country rock group, Mason Proffit to the present, and he could have penned original lyrics. His early Sparrow album, The New Earth, is as radical as Keith Green. Before forming the Little Portion hermitage, he was a third order Franciscan lay brother. Arlo Guthrie was also briefly a member, and Guthrie wrote one of his best albums, Outlasting the Blues, at that time. As a worship leader, the texts of the Mass were a natural choice for John, but the liner notes hint that there may be more rock records, and I hope some will include original songs. Could monk rock, like punk rock, be the thing that brings music back to the streets and to the people? Can it derail the current overproduction that makes rock, pop and country all sound the same? O brother, where art thou?

4 out of 5 stars "Monk Rock" Joins Classic Riffs, Timeless Truths.......2005-08-22

The good news is John Michael Talbot, Catholic's music top-selling and highest profile artist, hasn't pulled a Pat Boone, donned leather and covered Metallica and AC/DC. Nor, as the title might suggest, has he donned a wool cap and joined Mickey, Peter and Davey (or for that matter, Alvin and Theodore) on their next reunion tour.

The better news is this founding member of the country-rock and Christian rock genres (in his words, "for better or worse") has rediscovered his love of electric guitars, classic rock riffs and the singalong anthems of the late-60s Jesus movement. Those familiar with contemplative Talbot works like "For The Bride" and "Simple Heart" will be pleasantly surprised by the sharp rock he plays here.

Musically and throughout his exhaustive liner notes, Talbot name-checks classic rock influences from CSN and the Byrds to the Stones, Who, Hendrix and Clapton. Traditional Catholic Mass music rocks here as it hasn't since folk and rock masses dominated the first post-Vatican II years. (Talbot cites the Lifeteen movement as a strong musical influence on "Monk Rock"'s songs and style.)

"Kyrie" (not Mr. Mister's 1985 hit) finds Talbot floating smoky, vintage acoustic/electric riffs solo around his "psuedo choir" multi-tracked vocals. "Gloria" recalls "Captain and Me"-era Doobie Brothers. "Credo," (the Apostle's Creed), comes alive with a reggae beat and some sharp 12-string playing. "Jesus Prayer Swing" cuts a deep groove thanks to veteran bassist Leland "Funk Monk" Sklar and drummer Neil "Thump Monk" Wilkinson. The only three lines the faithful speak during the Eucharist Prayer are turned into a fist-pumping anthem in "Proclaim the Mystery."

From "One Body In Christ's" anthemic chorus and swift tempo changes to the vocal blast opening of "Walk With Jesus" ("All...life...long!") JMT uses his chance to plug in to deliver his sharpest guitar playing and catchiest melodies in years. Musically, "Monk Rock" doesn't recall the blues rockers Talbot mentions so much as it does John Mellencamp. He, like Talbot in Mason Profitt and solo, successfully incorporated country-flavored instruments into the heartland rock he loved. "Monk Rock" is John Michael Talbot not only sharing the joy of his Gospel-based lyrical message but his sheer musical fun delivering it. It's an exuberant CD, unique to his long career, and well worth owning.

4 out of 5 stars Jesus Music lives again as John Michael Talbot goes electric on his 48th release.......2005-08-21

"There were two things I wanted to do musically as I move a bit past middle age: Really learn some classical guitar, and dig out my old electric guitars and learn to play pretty well again," said John Michael Talbot. "Monk Rock is the initial fruit from this effort."

I never thought I would hear John Michael jamming 70's style on electric guitar on "One Body in Christ." Who would have guessed he would be playing blues licks on "Kyrie"?

With vocal harmonies reminiscent of the Talbot Brothers, and lyrics written in the simple and innocent style of the early Jesus movement music, these songs fit that genre but have the advantage of modern production.

Some of the songs have Latin titles and include background chants, which gives them a slight otherworldly feel. A few are built around just a line or two of verse and are carried by the music.

One of the highlights is "Gloria," which is built on a catchy guitar riff and a chorus that could go on forever. The "Jesus Prayer Swing" features some rollicking, country rock guitar playing. "Spread the Good News," the first song written for the recording, is dedicated to the late John Paul II.

Though banjo is used effectively on several cuts, and "Sanctus" starts off with flute reminiscent of Jethro Tull, the acoustic takes a back seat on this release.

Aside from the semi-humorous title, this is a serious and unique effort-one that uses the best elements from an earlier era to make a recording that is fun and relevant for today.

This was an interesting CD I like the guest artists who provided a new sound to a basic arrangement.

5 out of 5 stars Minions Dominion.......2007-01-22

This is a terrific CD. A tribute to the late Elvin Jones, it is beautifully played and wonderfully reminiscent. Delfeayo has not recorded anything under his own name for 10 years and, hence, may be unfamiliar as a player to many readers of these remarks. That should begin to change in the wake of this effort. The tunes span the gamut from contemporary bop ("B'rer Rabbit" and "Minions Dominion") to traditional (Ellington's "Just Squeeze Me"), to a haunting Coltrane-inspired piece ("Lost in the Crescent") that in this context pays homage to Jones' days with the Great One's classic quartet. There is an original ballad ("If You Only Knew") on which Delfeayo, an unabashed sentimentalist at heart, lays down some of the most beautifully restrained trombone playing I have ever heard. And a straight ahead tribute to Jones ("Lone Warrior") on which I would say his playing reaches a pinnacle had I not heard him play it even better live at the Blue Note earlier this month in New York. A word about the sidemen is in order. The rhythm section, led by Jones himself, and including Mulgrew Miller on piano, is as tight as one would expect. This was one of Jones' last recordings, and all of his gifts are in evidence. Never one for the spotlight, he nevertheless drives the group with a relentless and unerring sense of tone and timing. Delfeayo's brother, Branford, and Donald Harrison each appear on the CD. Check out Branford's playing on "Minions" and "Lost in the Crescent," then go out and buy his own latest ("Braggtown") and listen to "Jack Baker." If there is anyone in jazz today who plays with greater speed, technique and control, I challenge you to name him. WOW! Needless to say, I am really impressed with this CD. I have listened to it about 20 times, and each time, I hear something new. It's a wonderful effort, and it whets the appetite for more from this talented member of the Marsalis family.

Nothing like the sound of a good trombone player and Delfeayo is just that. Elvin Jones is on the CD and sounds wonderful. I love the variety of sound. From Lonesone Warrior to the last cut, just wonderful. The mark for me is would I listen to it again and again, YES I would. I hope Delfeayo makes more and more music.

Great album, perhaps one of Jim's best. From "Wild Wind" and "The Old Man From the Mountain" with their wildlife conservation messages to the funny, but thought provoking, "Food Chain Song" this album has something for everyone. "Thinkin' Like A Mountain" and "Morning In The Mountains" make you want to throw a pack on your back and get out to enjoy the wildlands. Also, noteworthy is "Searchin' for the Road Not Taken" which is a tribute to Frost's poetry as well as a reflection on the effect that wild places have on one's soul. A truly wonderful CD!
