Alligator Tales

Editorial Reviews

Only someone with such a unique array of experiences and influences can produce such a boldly original record as Chief Jim Billie's gripping debut. Growing up on a Seminole reservation in Florida's Big Cypress Swamp, Chief Jim learned about his people's ancestry, their legends and poetry and spirituality. He ate turtle meat and listened to ancient tales told by his grandfather. Chief Jim Billie also served in Vietnam, using lessons from his homeland swamps to survive. He is Chairman of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, and as such he serves as both eloquent statesman and political player. Thus, Alligator Tales is a remarkable fusion of Seminole tradition and modern awareness. Thanks to producer John McEuen's deft touch, the music seamlessly combines Native American styles with country fiddles, banjos, and mandolins as well as the Latino sounds of flamenco guitar and Mexicano percussion. Songs of love and family accompany age-old Seminole stories of the swamp and the spirit. --Marc Greilsamer
