Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good collection!.......2007-06-03

This is an excellent collection of country hits, especially for those of us who grew up during this time-period. This collection may not be suitable for serious country music fans, but it does provide and excellent selection of music by lead performers from the 1950s through the 1970s for those of us who appreciate Country-Western music. I was very pleased to find several songs I remember from my youth, including: "The Battle of New Orleans," "El Paso," "Six Days on the Road," "King of the Road," "Flowers on the Wall," "Big Bad John," "The Three Bells," "Ring of Fire" (I was a big Johnny Cash fan as a kid), "Ode to Billy Joe," "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "Rhinestone Cowboy," "The Most Beautiful Girl," "Convoy" (yes, I had a CB radio), "The Gambler, and others.

Check out the other songs on the title list to see if you remember these. The collection comes with 3 CDs, one for each decade. The sound quality is good, too.

4 out of 5 stars Legends of Country Music:Classic Hits of the 50's,60's&70's.......2007-05-09

If you like country music from this era it is a good sample. Many top ten hits.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful old songs remembered.......2007-01-18

My Parents and my Sister are all enjoying these songs from the days when we remembered Country Legends. This CD Collection is tremendous... has all of the greats on it. Highly recommend it to anyone wanting to hear the good "old" songs.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe how many great songs are on this set.......2006-12-16

I bought this for my Dad for Christmas, but I can't wait to borrow it. My jaw dropped as I read the song list for this set. While a few don't really fit (When You're Hot, You're Hot???), the set is filled with some of the best songs ever to be played on country radio.

I hope there's a Volume II.

5 out of 5 stars GREATS HITS. HECK - EVEN THE MISSES ARE GOOD!!.......2006-12-13

Growing up in the '50s and '60s, I remember the songs on this set very well. This is a good review of one off hits like the Browns "Three Bells" (I couldn't stand that song as a kid but kind of enjoy it now), the Statler Brothers' "Flowers on the Wall",Floyd Cramer's "Last Date", "Detroit (I want to go home)", "Abilene", "El Paso" (notice the city name theme), and a host of others. All the major players are represented, Johnny Horton (Battle of New Orleans), Hank Snow (Movin' On), Patsy Cline (I Fall to Pieces), Johnny Cash (Ring of Fire), on and on and on. However, its for the more obscure hits that you should purchase this set. A great overview of the period. Hey, I discovered that Webb Pierce was a real rockin' musician!! Bet many of you didn't know that either!! The most interesting stuff is the '50s and '60s. The '70s goes into the Willie and Waylon (and similar artists)thing which you probably have on other collections. However, the sound quality is great and the early stuff fantastic!! If you like country music, buy it!! If you like country music and want to drive someone crazy who does not like traditional country, buy it BIG TIME!!

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Collection.......2006-04-03

Here's an artist easily forgotten, although his talent is nothing short of stellar. Hank Locklin was somehow able to tie the original Honky Tonk sound with the Nashville sound that made him a favorite of fans from both categories of country music. This "Best of..." collection includes all of his biggest hits, including "Send Me the Pillow" and "Please Help Me I'm Falling"; although his best vocal work can be found in "Geisha Girl" and "Followed Closely By My Teardrops". These are origianl recordings and the sound is as good as it gets. A+

5 out of 5 stars Much needed collection.......2003-09-26

These are the original recordings of Hank Locklin's hit songs. No need to look around any more. Aside from the Bear Family Boxed sets, this is the only collection with the original versions available.

The booklet has recording dates and session musicans listed anlong with an essay.

I would say this is the definate Hank Locklin.

4 out of 5 stars Long needed reissue.......2003-03-12

Hank Locklin was a fine country singer in both the honky tonk and Nashville Sound styles. This CD is a much welcomed reissued collection of his hits including the classics "Please Help Me I'm Falling" and "Send Me the Pillow." Check out the organ playing by Ray Stevens on "Bonaparte's Retreat"! An essential addition to any country music collection.

If Don Gibson is mentioned these days, it's usually as the country songwriter responsible for standards like "I Can't Stop Lovin' You," "Sweet Dreams," and "Oh Lonesome Me." This CD is a reminder that Gibson was also a commanding, sensitive singer who first put those titles--and eight others included here--in the Country Top 10. Producer Chet Atkins only lightly sweetened these early Nashville Sound tracks, allowing Gibson's affecting style plenty of room. His greatest performance might be on "Sea of Heartbreak," a Hal David-penned number that's a small lesson in controlled vocal emotion. In addition to Gibson's most notable hits, this collection also offers several fine album tracks (a stylishly low-key version of "Camptown Races," the midtempo near-rocker "It Has to Be"). Astonishingly, the liner notes point out, Gibson has yet to be inducted into country's Hall of Fame. If nothing else, though, this reissue should help reset the balance in appreciation of Gibson's work. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Don Gibson Sings Beyond Country.......2007-02-17

Don Gibson matured with this CD. His voice has that silky smooth sound we know from music on the radio. He may be called a "Country Legend", but the songs on this CD go beyond country. This is a good CD.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2007-01-15

Listening to Don Gibson is always soo great! I really enjoy this CD, including all the good songs I remember!

4 out of 5 stars Okay, Four and a HALF Stars.......2004-12-09

It doesn't look like there's heavy traffic here to see this compilation by The Sad Poet. The Amazon info is dated also for Don Gibson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001, two years before he passed away in Nashville. This is a pretty good package of Big Don's music, some really solid hits. Don had a roller coaster career what with drug and alcohol problems but he left us with some fine music much of which is in this compilation. Too bad it doesn't include his later (1972) country hit, "Woman, Sensuous Woman" but that could have been for another label. This one is worth the price and I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Collection.......2001-05-26

Well-focused and more thorough than other Gibson collections. A real effort was made here, both in the song selection, and the extensive liner notes, to emphasize the collaboration between Don Gibson and his producer/guitarist Chet Atkins. These two exceptional artists truly created in the artistic, not merely commercial sense, a new, more urban style of country music. Gibson's "Big Four" compositions are here:"Oh Lonesome Me", "Legend In My Time", "Can't Stop Lovin' You", and "Sweet Dreams". It's nice to find "Who Cares" and "Don't Tell Me Your Troubles" together on a single disc collection, as these two songs are usually buried in multi-disc sets. They are, deservedly, highlighted better in this album. One can listen to this album, and like a collection of mid-40's Bill Monroe, or Elvis mid-50's Sun sessions, get an appreciation of something going on that was actually taking a genre somewhere new-- in this case, the development of the Nashville Sound. The liner notes do a very good job of detailing just what Gibson and Atkins set out to do. My personal favorite 'throw-in' cut is Camptown Races', the Stephan Foster piece of Americana that gets tender loving care from vocalist and producer. Putting the new sound to work here is like restoring an antique to new luster. If I had my 'druthers' here, I'd have picked a couple of Gibson self-penned tunes... maybe "Times Were Good", or "Far, Far, Away", instead of "Funny, Familiar, Forgotten Feelings" and "Did'nt Work Out". The former, a Mickey Newberry tune, is good, but is a little heavy on the 'doo-wop' for me. But, that's just me playin' favorites, and nitpicking, in light of the overall quality of this album. Don Gibson was one of country music's true originals, and his artistry is wonderfully portrayed here.

Though Bob Wills has long been heralded as a country-music icon (an inspiration for artists from Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson through Lyle Lovett and Asleep at the Wheel, and toasted by Waylon Jennings in "Bob Wills Is Still the King"), the Texas fiddler considered himself more of a jazz bandleader. The Texas Playboys' signature dance-floor style of Western swing encompassed blues, jazz, country, and pop standards, with a sophistication at odds with the era's image of "hillbilly music." This four-disc centennial anthology (a little late, as Wills was born in 1905 and died in 1975) documents the musical progression of the band and its music from regional phenomenon to national treasure. The 105 tracks (remastered, but all previously released) showcase the legendary "twin guitars" of Leon McAuliffe and Eldon Shamblin, the smooth crooning of Tommy Duncan, the irrepressible spirit of Wills himself, and a songbook of classics such as "New San Antonio Rose" (with lyrics added to the original instrumental), "Take Me Back to Tulsa," and "Faded Love." In jukeboxes and roadhouses throughout the Southwest, it is Bob Wills, not Benny Goodman, who remains the "King of Swing." --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love Western Swing.......2007-06-08

My husband and I have been a Bob Wills fan for many years. He is 80 and a collector of Bob Wills music. He was truly the "King of Western Swing" and this is a wonderful collection of his music.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Western Swing.......2007-05-06

I own other Bob Wills recordings, but this is the most comprehensive. It's not really country music at all...It has its own kind of energy and incorporates various styles of music. It's inventive and ageless and it's just pure pleasure to hear.

4 out of 5 stars Legends of Country Music.......2007-04-11

Really a good set, with a lot of original recordings. If you like original Texas swing, this is a must box set for your collection

5 out of 5 stars What makes Bob holler?.......2006-10-03

I must own about 30 Bob Wills cd's and this has made many of them obsolete. If you are a Bob Wills fan there is no need for me to convince you of Will's and his band's virtuosity. For those of you who aren't familiar with Bob Wills and western swing music, I think you owe it a hearing. Wills mixed blues, jazz, big band, and western music and literally invented what we know as western swing. The list of great musicians who played with this band are impressive. Not many people realize that Rolling Stone magazine selected Eldon Shamblin as the greatest rhythm guitar player of all time.
The recording quality of this cd is so far above everything else I've heard that it must be stressed here.
What makes Bob Holler? If he were alive today this reproduction of his great music would!

5 out of 5 stars A moving tribute to a great musician !.......2006-09-22

Born to a poor family in Limestone County, Texas, Bob Wills (the undisputed "King of Western Swing") has become synonymous with that style of music. In 2006, this 4-disc release in Columbia "Legends of Country Music" series is a great way to celebrate his centennial! Wills had learned to play the fiddle by age ten. By the late 1920s, he and Herman Arnspiger were performing in the Fort Worth area as The Wills Fiddle Band. In 1931, they were joined by Milton & Durwood Brown and called themselves Aladdin's Laddies. Disc #1 in this set begins in 1932 with recordings of The Light Crust Doughboys, the band formed after the Light Crust Flour Co. hired the band for radio broadcasts. Because of a trademark, Victor Records called them The Fort Worth Doughboys. By 1934, Wills had formed his own band, moved to Tulsa, and signed with Okeh Records. Disc #2 covers 1937-1940, and disc #3 spans 1941-45. Disc #4 begins with 1946 and ends with Bob Wills' final session (1973 in Dallas).

It's important for such compilations to include a musician's big hits, as well as a sampling of their entire repertoire and influential pieces. We hear many favorites like "Big Ball in Cowtown," "Bubbles In My Beer," "Roly Poly," "Take Me Back to Tulsa" and "Stay A Little Longer." "San Antonio Rose" and "New San Antonio Rose" are both included, the former written in just 30 minutes when Wills needed another number at a recording session. Pandhandle Rag was a top ten hit in 1949. We're given the 1969 version here. Leon McAuliffe's influential "Steel Guitar Rag" appears on disc #1. In the 1960, Wills made the charts with "Shape Up or Ship Out" and "I Don't Love Nobody." Unfortunately, these songs are not provided. And how in the heck could they not have included "Across the Alley from the Alamo"? Oh well ... can't have everything.

With 105 tracks in total, this compilation certainly tells the musical story with both old-time fiddling (e.g. Osage Stomp) and country-styled jazz (e.g. Trouble in Mind, Basin Street Blues) well represented. But don't forget about the times that Bob Wills lived and played his music in, just after the Depression. Many of his fans were poor, the working folks in need of a charismatic performer to look up to. Somewhat of a folk hero, Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys traveled the backroads to rural areas in a large bus with a big longhorn steer head on the front. With heavy emphasis on the backbeat and guitar chords played over a moving bass line, the music was infectious an designed for dancing. And then there were the great lyrics, often sung by the great Tommy Duncan. Excellent notes, in a booklet with many excellent historic photographs, are an added bonus in this legends series. All I can say, is that it's a moving tribute to a great musician. So, to quote Bob Wills, "Aaaaa-haaaa!" (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

Album Description

Soon after Bobby returned to RCA in 1972, he recorded an entire LP of songs by the legendary songwriter, cartoonist and humorist Shel Silverstein. The album yielded three hits, Daddy What If, Marie Laveau (Bobby's first ever #1 hit) and The Winner. Ten other songs feature Silverstein's weird and often ironic twist on the country song. This is regarded by many as Bobby's best-ever album!

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Bare hits a homer!.......2002-10-16

This was the first album I ever bought, at the age of 12, with some money I had saved by mowning lawns. I listened to it for years until I wore the vinyl record out. "The Winner" and "Marie Leveaux" could be heard on the radio at the time but the real beauty of the album, I think, is the seldom-heard "Roaslie's Good Eats Cafe" and "In the Hills of Shiloh." Today, my wife uses "Rosalie's" to teach her 12th grade English students about descriptive writing. My two boys and I giggle at the "Mermaid", "Paul", "Sure Hit Songwriters Pen", and all the other great ones. Thanks Bobby & Shel for this artistic collaboration -- and for thirty years (and counting) of enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars An artists artist........2002-03-11

Many of these reviews are good but also erroneous. This is probably the best theme album of all time in any genre. But it was NOT the first theme album in country music. That distinction belongs to Johnny Cash in the early sixties. To appreciate ones music one does not have to denegrate someone elses music or contribution, or to have novice listeners make silly statements without them having the scope to be in the know. Johnny Cash says Bare is his favorite, he also was known as Jennings favorite. He also should be given more credit for the sweeping changes in the artist as being in control of their music.Far before Waylon and Willie , Bare learned from Cash how to rule his music from Nashville producers. Listen and enjoy . They are all favorites - but the last The Winner is a classic!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of any genre. Thanks Mr. Bare for your lifes music. Brad Stender.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Home!!!.......2001-07-24

I think of home when I hear "Daddy what if?" Man, it realy brings me back to my childhood. My Dad and I used to sing this to each other. My Dad is a drunk now. He is a "True Alcoholic" But he and I used to sing this to each other when I was little. I am 29 now. I hope anyone who listens to this will think of us and your own babies, when you hear this song. It is realy wonderful and I am glad that I have finally found it on Amazon.com. Love always with my daddy,..... Tricia

5 out of 5 stars That old and beautiful memory..........2006-09-29

Well, I was a Sylvia fan, and that was over 20 years ago... Gee... I was just a senior high school student and it was just so hard to buy an album like that, especially I live in Taiwan...
I even joined Sylvia's fan club for about 1 or 2 years, I didn't remember that... That was such a beautiful memories...
Now, I do wonder if there's any way to buy those old records. She's really got a special voice and those were really great songs.

4 out of 5 stars Not As Good As I Expected.......2006-06-19

When I wrote this review, all the other reviews had given this album 5-stars except one and it was 4 stars. Must be all reviews written by hardcore Sylvia fans! I gave it 4 too. Why not 5? Because there isn't much here that seems that interesting. Sometimes I think that maybe the difference between a really successful singer and one that doesn't do as well may be how good their material is. If an artist gets lousy songs they aren't going to be as successful as someone who may not sing as well but has great material. Nothing particularly lousy with any of Sylvia's material on this album; just not many interesting songs. Sylvia has a great, smooth, beautiful voice and I love the sound of it. It's just that the songs are a little boring and not memorable. There are a couple of exceptions. Have always liked Tumbleweed. Drifter is not bad either. Most of the other songs are forgettable. Pleasant listening experience. It just seems that you forget the songs as soon as you hear them. There is a lot of repeating in some of the songs too, such as "Eyes Like Mine".
It's too bad because I think with better material, Sylvia could have been much more successful. Fans please note that one of the available albums is listed on Amazon under Sylvia Hutton, rather than just Sylvia.

5 out of 5 stars Sylvia "Just Sylvia".......2006-02-09

I bought Sylvia's cassette entitled "Just Sylvia" back in 1984. Wow, what a great set of songs (material)!! Unfortunately,I no longer have that particular cassette because I wore it out. I wish it would be re-released on CD. I have not even been able to locate a cassette to purchase on-line. While raising my children, we traveled a lot. Sylvia was one of my favorite traveling tapes and now, is my daughter's favorite. Together, we have been searching for a replacement. How disappointing we have not been able to locate one. Every song on this particular tape was just "fabulous"!!! Thank you Sylvia!!

5 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Different!.......2005-10-17

So many "girl" country singers sound the same. Sylvia has a unique sound and unique material. If you like country you should have this as part of your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Sylvia's stuff is so rare!.......2004-10-31

I recently bought this album cause I only have Sylvia's material on vinyl LP's. But I am biased cause I love all her material. Sylvia was definitely ahead of her time! Unique voice and fantastic interpretations & arrangements of the songs! I wish RCA would release the early albums like "Surprise" .. which is my favourite album!
