This is where it all started.......2006-05-13
For those of you familiar with Johnny Cash from the excellent film Walk the Line, or to those that have only heard his later work with Rick Rubin or maybe the Folsom Prison album, this is a good introduction to what made him a legend in the first place: his early rockabilly work at Sun. Sun Records owner and producer Sam Phillips is often credited as giving Johnny Cash his sound, by playing up to their technical limitations as musicians and emphasizing their sparseness, especially Cash's baritone and guitarist Luther Perkins primitive(but absolutely brilliant) "boom-chicka-boom" rhythm playing. Essential are Cry Cry Cry, Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues,Get Rhythm, Home of the Blues, Rock Island Line(the most rockin' version of this song I've ever heard) and Give My Love to Rose. The only song that's really missing here is Hey Porter, which was the flipside to Cry Cry Cry and was the first song he recorded at Sun. This is REAL country music, and the perfect antidote to the generic, pop with cowboy hats and tight Wranglers swill Na$hville turns out these days.
Classic Cash.......2006-01-27
These are 25 of Johnny Cash's classics varying from 1955-1958. Some of my favourites on here are 'Ballad Of A Teenage Queen', 'Give My Love To Rose', 'The Ways Of A Woman In Love' and 'You're The Nearest Thing To Heaven'
A great preview of Cash's early days at Sun Records........2002-08-27
The Sun Records sessions were probably the greatest chance to experience the birth of country/rhythm and blues, and that is why I chose this album. Elvis and Johnny were probably THE most successful graduates of Sam Phillips' vast list of singers. I like both singers and this is THE place to start with the birth of a legend. Elvis has a similar CD collection from Sun Records. Listening to these collections is like opening up a very old, fine wine. Although there are only a small handful of recognizable selections, each song is a treasure for me.
