Elvis Presley's music in the 1970s is often dismissed as the bombastic, half-hearted hack work of an overweight, pill-addicted, badly dressed has-been. In the liner notes to this five-CD set, Dave Marsh argues that Presley, in fact, created a more impressive body of work in the '70s than almost any other pop act. And the music on this massive anthology backs Marsh up. Stripping away all the garish live recordings and album filler, the package concentrates on a core of 120 songs--the A- and B-sides of every single Presley recorded in the '70s, 46 other studio tracks (including 13 previously unreleased performances), and 27 live tracks (including another 13 unreleased tracks)--that feature a still-magnificent singer collaborating with one of the funkiest bands of its time. This body of work certainly doesn't match Presley's breakthroughs in the '50s, nor does it equal the achievements of Al Green, Neil Young, and Van Morrison in the '70s, but it does stack up well against the work of Bob Dylan and the ex-Beatles in the same decade. Even in his laziest moments, Presley was a master of intonation and phrasing, delivering his rich baritone with a disarming naturalness. And when he caught a spark from his great T.C.B. Band (anchored by guitarist James Burton and drummer Ron Tutt), Presley could still out-sing anyone in American pop. You can hear it here on inspired versions of Tony Joe White's "Polk Salad Annie," Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Working," Wayne Carson's "Always on My Mind," Chuck Berry's "Promised Land," Paul McCartney's "Lady Madonna," Percy Mayfield's "Stranger in My Own Hometown," Dennis Linde's "Burning Love," and Joe South's "Walk a Mile in My Shoes." --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars How soon we forget..........2007-07-13

Those who say that Elvis was no longer relavant, or "setting the tone" for music in the 70's have forgotten the most obvious fact. Elvis had already set the tone in the 50's, and all those who came after were products of that - like it or not. So they were only following Elvis' lead when you say Elvis was out of the loop. The boxed set is genius. Elvis voice is soulful, powerful, and comes with a huge whollop.

A great collection of Elvis music. A must have for any Elvis fan.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis Is Back to LIfe!.......2006-11-10

I was listening Elvis when I was a school boy and now after 30 years I listen Elvis as if he were back to life again and singing to us. I was encouraged by Elvis' songs and again they are encouraging me now in the 21st century!

4 out of 5 stars Many strong performances.......2005-09-30

Towards the end of his life, Elvis was showing signs of burnout and depression, even then, he could still rise to the occassion and belt out a great performance. This is the most comprehensive collection of his 1970's recordings available. It starts off with the classic "The Wonder Of You" and takes you right through all of the singles released before his pre-mature death, several great album cuts and alternate recordings, and a sample of his live show on the last CD. His outstanding performances on "Hurt" and "Moody Blue" show what he was capable of in the months before his death. Makes you think of what might have been...

5 out of 5 stars The Kings Marvelous Last stand.......2005-07-13

Well, This following the essential 50's and 60's, is a excellant representation of the Kings final decade, from tear jerker ballads, to country, to pure rock n roll, This time period is ofte underrated, but produced many great songs for the King.An Awsome live disc displays some killer tuens and great versions of classic songs, definatly a must!!

5 out of 5 stars The Essential 60's Masters.......2007-04-12

Great collection of Elvis 60's music. Be sure to treat yourself to the 50's and 70's collection to complete your collection. There are several songs not included on other cd's. You won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars If I Can Dream?.......2007-03-26

Why isn't that song on here? That's a fantastic song! Mercy!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Long-Time or New Fans.......2005-12-04

I'm a relatively new Elvis fan and I didn't know where to begin because there are so many albums and hit collections... I decided on starting with this box set because it spanned so much of his career and because it included an alternate version of my favorite song of his - Suspicious Minds.

The sound remastering is excellent and the packaging is great. Well worth the $$.

This is a must have for the long-time Elvis fan or the new fan like me! I'm definitely hooked on Elvis now and I plan to follow up this purchase with his 50s and 70s box set.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but incomplete.......2005-09-30

Proof that Elvis had many fine recordings during the 60's! Even though some of the material may not be the best, Elvis' performances are. I was impressed by many of the early 60's recordings, that I had not heard before. A very strong but incomplete collection! Unfortunately, this box set does not include several of Elvis' 60's hits from his movies or his Gospel songs. This is especially disconcerting for a box set (the only Grammies he won were for his Gospel recordings!). If you are going to buy this box set, you should go ahead a buy the 2 CD release "Command Performances: The Essential 60's Masters II" and the 2 CD "Amazing Grace: His Greatest Sacred Performances" to fill in the holes in this collection.

They should have just added a CD or two to this box set and included some of his key movie and Gospel songs in a single collection, but then they would have only had a shot at one GOLD Record Award instead of two or three...

4 out of 5 stars Essential 60's Masters.......2005-06-24

I was dissapointed to see that this set does not contain all of the Elvis Masters from the 60's. It only contians what RCA considers "essential." For example, if you want live, gospel, or movie material, you must go elsewhere. This just does not have it. On the other hand, what the box set does have is great and it leaves you wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely an essential collection of mid-1960s music from Mac .......2007-01-02

With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present. Since its 1955 creation, Rural Rhythm has released hundreds of classic performances by many legendary bluegrass and old-time musicians such as J.E. Mainer, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Mac Wiseman, Vassar Clements, Hylo Brown, Bill Harrell, Jim Eanes, and many others. This album is part of that archival catalog. The label owes its Arcadia, California start to Uncle Jim O'Neal whose vision was to release the music of many top bluegrass and old-time musicians in the 1950-70s, seeking success where Starday had failed by producing records of limited appeal by lesser known, albeit talented, musicians.

Mac Wiseman was born on May 23, 1925. He hails from Crimora, Virginia but lives on Percy Priest Lake, near Nashville. He was born in 1925, the same year the Grand Ole Opry started. In 1944, Mac began his career as a DJ in in Harrisonburg, Virginia. In 1946, he worked with Molly O'Day, then in 1948 an original member of Flatt and Scruggs' Foggy Mountain Boys, and then in 1949 with Bill Monroe. From 1952-1956, Mac with his band "The Country Boys" recorded several hits for Dot Records including "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy," "Love Letters in the Sand," "The Ballad of Davy Crockett." From 1957-1963, he was an A & R man (Artists and Repertoire) for Dot Records and ran the company's country-music department. While at Dot, he was instrumental in the success of Pat Boone's career. It was Mac who suggested that Pat record the song "Love Letters in the Sand" which became a smash hit for the young singer. In 1958, Mac one of the founders of the Country Music Association (CMA) and its first secretary. In 1965, he performed at the first bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Virginia. In 1966, Mac managed WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia. That was the year that he recorded this album for Uncle Jim's Rural Rhythm Records. He was in fine country voice for songs that also include some uncredited accompaniment with drums, jew's harp, Dobro, harmonica, autoharp, electric bass, and others.

In more recent time, Mac's kept busy with music. In 1990, he was elected president of R.O.P.E. (Reunion of Professional Entertainers) in Nashville. One of the goals of the organization is to build a retirement home for country music entertainers. In 1991, he worked at the revived Old Dominion Barn Dance, Richmond, Virginia. In 1992, he worked at the Willie Nelson Theatre in Branson, Missouri. In 1993, Mac was inducted into the IBMA's Hall of Honor. In 1997, he recorded with "The Groove Grass Boyz." In 2001, Wiseman recorded a duet with his old friend Johnny Cash: "When It's Reveille Time in Heaven."

Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. This set of 25 classics is reissued in Rural Rhythm's "Heritage Collection." It contains original mixes from 1966 along with some bonus tracks from the Wiseman master vault archives. Liner notes were written by country music historian Colin Escott based on an interview conducted with Wiseman. For the price and volume, this is an essential collection of mid-1960s Wiseman music for your own library.

Don't expect to hear vocal harmonies, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic country sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Sensational collection of the absolute best from this legendary singer-songwriter........2007-07-02

Being a huge fan of the Fifth Dimension I have been enjoying Laura Nyro tunes for decades. But incredibly I don't believe I had ever sampled any of Laura Nyro's work as a performer. Just the other day I came across this 2000 release "Time and Love: The Essential Masters". My curiosity got the best of me and I grabbed it. I must say that I really did not know just what to expect and I had the feeling that I might be wasting my hard earned money. As it turns out nothing could be further from the truth. "Time and Love: The Essential Masters features a total of 16 terrific tunes by this often overlooked singer-songwriter.
Now I have to admit that I was blown away by the fact the Laura Nyro penned 13 of the 16 tunes in this collection. These are songs that just about everyone would be familiar with. As I indicated earlier the Fifth Dimension were huge fans of Laura Nyro's work and had a number of big hits with songs like "Wedding Bell Blues", "Sweet Blindness", "Stoned Soul Picnic" and "Save The Country". I found that Laura's original versions were just terrific and I seemed to enjoy them all just as much. Blood Sweat and Tears had a monster hit in 1969 with Laura's "And When I Die" and Three Dog Night scored with "Eli's Coming" just a year or two later. Once again Laura's take on these tunes are a bit different as you might expect but highly enjoyable nonetheless! I also enjoyed Laura's version of the Barbra Streisand hit "Stoney End". What a great tune!
"Time and Love: The Essential Masters" also features a handful of Laura's tunes you might not be familiar with. Of these I particularly enjoyed "Goodbye Joe" and the title tune "Time And Love" which is probably my favorite track on this collection. And if you are a chart buff you can sample the one and only Laura Nyro recording to hit the Billboard Hot 100. Laura's version of the Gerry Goffin-Carole King favorite "Up On The Roof" spent a total of 2 weeks on the charts and peaked at #92.
I was quite surprised to discover that Laura Nyro passed away from ovarian cancer in 1997 at the age of 49. That is really too bad because as I am just now learning this was one extremely talented lady. "Time And Love: The Essential Masters" has been a revelation to me. I enjoyed each and every one of the 16 tracks in this collection. The remastering job is first rate and I particularly enjoyed perusing the 12 page booklet that was included here. All in all this one is a most pleasant surprise. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars most of the best.......2007-02-16

if you love or even like laura nyro this concise collection has most of the best from the early years..if you must have only one album by this unbelievable writer, singer & performer you could not go wrong here!...(although i would not be content with one)..the next step of course would be "stoned soul picnic" the two disc anthology...& after that a live album!...here's hoping they'll put out that dvd documentary soon!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Nyro!.......2006-07-30

I'm new to the music of Laura Nyro, but I've known some of these songs for years. This cd inlcudes many of Nyro's titles that were hits for other artists like the Fifth Dimension and Barbra Streisand, so they're familiar.
My first introduction to Nyro's voice was in the movie, "Home at the End of the World," where they're playing one of her records and she's singing "It's Gonna Take A Miracle." That song I have always associated with Deniece Williams, so I got curious to find out more about Laura Nyro and bought this cd.
Needless to say I was impressed. Nyro had a voice that sounded like a cross between Streisand and Karen Carpenter, so I don't know why most critics say her voice was less than average.
The cd has been remastered and includes a booklet with an introduction written by Stephen Holden. Lyrics to all of the songs are also inlcuded, and the album the song came from, which is a nice touch.

4 out of 5 stars Nyro was a master singer/songwriter.......2006-03-13

Laura Nyro did not have the best voice but her song writing overcame any vocal deficiencies she may have had. Although not as comprehensive as the 2-disc set "Stoned Soul Picnic", in many ways this CD offers more insight of her more popular efforts. 'Wedding Bell Blues' and 'Stoned Soul Picnic' were remade by The 5th Dimension and became huge hits; 'And When I Die' was a heavy from Blood, Sweat and Tears; 'Stoney End' was a Barbra Steisand staple and 'Eli's Comin'' was one of Three Dog Night's biggest successes. Buy this CD if you are a newcomer to Laura's music then you may want to explore her artistry by purchasing some of her earlier works. 4.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars My 2 Cents.......2006-02-19

I have to add my voice to those who praise the work of this remarkable artist who, before she was 25, had already written big hits for The Fifth Dimension, Barbra Streisand, 3 Dog Night, Blood Sweat & Tears, and Thelma Houston. All of those songs are included in this collection. In her songwriting, Laura took the Goffin-King/Brill Building style and morphed it into something with more soul, and more of an "edge". Her lyrics abound with references to religion and nature, making them seem at the same time both spiritual and paganistic. She sings of Thunder, Lightning, Sun, Wind, Time, Love - elemental things. Her vocal style varies from song to song, but generally it is straight from the gut, with a fervor bordering on ecstasy. I saw her on TV only once. I believe it was in 1969, and I believe it was on The Andy Williams Show. She walked out calmly, sat down at the piano, and proceeded to give those ivories quite a licking as she sang "Save The Country". I never lost the image of that performance. She was so REAL, just her intense and beautiful self. My favorite cuts on this CD are her compositions "Blowin' Away", "Eli's Comin' ", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Save The Country" and "Blackpatch". As for covers, she's in appropriate despair in her cover of "It's Gonna Take A Miracle", and, in an odd coincidence (Or is it?) her string-laden version of Goffin-King's "Up On The Roof" is slowed down, to excellent effect, just as Carole King slowed down her own song "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" on her album "Tapestry". Laura, wherever you are, I hope it makes you smile when I say that I appreciate your gifts, and I thank you for being you.

In the '60s Elvis made 27 movies, many interchangeable, but each had a built-in excuse for him to release a soundtrack. Individually they fail to advance the legend, but when the best of each is collected in one place, as here, the results are very rewarding. This two-CD set has 62 tracks, which makes it, for lack of a better word, essential. Much of it sounds fairly na(ve now, but that's only part of the inherent charm. The personality that Presley infuses into each track is incredible, and gives the listener an idea of why he earned the nickname "The King." --Scott Wilson

4 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure.......2007-04-30

Listen to this anthology and you know what "Col." "Tom" "Parker" was up to: he wanted to pattern his client's movie career after Der Bingle's. There were just three problems, however: First Bing was a natural actor, who only got better; Elvis's approach was largely limited to sulking, or variations thereof. Second Bing had all sorts of excellent co-stars and foils from Fred MacMurray to Fred Astaire to Bob Hope to Danny Kaye, not to mention his movable feast of leading ladies; The King almost always mounted his filmic throne alone. Third Bing had help from the likes of Ralph Rainger, Leo Robin, Johnny Burke, James Van Heusen, Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael, and untold other gifted songwriters who added immeasurably to his (and our) stockload of popular standards. Among the ways Albert Goldman punctured Elvis's rep in his gawdawful "bio" was by noting with malevolent glee that The King spent most of his movie career singing at half-mast the "immortal" (his word) Ben Weisman. To be sure thanks to the "Col." he was stuck with the anvil-banging hacks of Hill and Range, which didn't help El's mood; but we must wonder if anyone could have written him decent tunes, for "Parker"'s reasoning wasn't entirely bad: El, like Bing, had an extraordinarily beautiful and interesting voice -- more so, as he didn't have Jack Kapp forcing him to sing kiddie tunes -- and he needed songs to match; but the best of the sixties -- think Carole King or Burt Bacharach -- weren't quite right for Elvis, and at any rate he was at heart more a balladeer than a flat-out rocker, whatever people may think. (And whosoever believes Leiber and Stoller were the bee's knees hasn't heard "Bossa Nova Baby.") Besides at some point he had to sing with a big orchestra, or with sexy dames, and ditch that lowing bovine barbershop quartet the Jordanaires, but he didn't -- until it was too late, and he became the Elvis of self-inflicted ridicule.

Regardless these are two very entertaining discs, with some truly pleasing sounds; the best are the stand-up flag-wavers like the alternate of "Follow That Dream" and the unforgettable "Return to Sender", proving the hacks could occasionally write a decent tune even when shackled to The King's preposterous plots. That the album slowly grinds down as it reaches its inevitable conclusion reflects on how Elvis's film stardom slowly ground down, to the point he was accepting the bean counters' asinine advice on starting non-starter dance crazes ("Do the Clam"), or singing stupid unconvincing duets with a slightly stupider sounding version of himself ("Kissin' Cousins"). If I sound disrespectful (and I really don't mean to) it's that, for all its promise, Elvis's career amounted to so little, and every time we hear the still exciting magic of the fifties we can only gnash our teeth and wonder what might have been had "Col." "Parker" been prematurely and mercifully deported.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis at his best.......2006-11-03

I have loved Elvis since I was a kid. You could say I grew up on Elvis as many other millions of people did. He is the greatest entertainer this world has known & this shows it. I grab every Elvis DVD, & CD I can get my hands on. What can I say but he is just FANTASTIC!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars If you have the 60's Box Set, you need this too.......2006-09-12

If you have the "From Nashville To Memphis: The Essential 60's Masters" Box Set, you need to go ahead and purchase this 2 CD set to round out your collection. The "From Nashville To Memphis" box set did not include any of the songs from his 1960's movies. This collection was issued to complement that one by providing an excellent overview of his 1960's movies recordings. While it is no secret that Elvis was not always provided with the best material for his movie soundtracks, he always performed even the lamest songs very well. This collection contains the classics "Can't Help Falling In Love" and "Return To Sender", several other hits (Flaming Star, Wild In The Country, Lonely Man, King Of The Whole Wide World, Bossa Nova Baby, One Broken Heart For Sale, Viva Las Vegas, What'd I Say, Puppet On A String, and Clean Up Your Own Back Yard), songs that should have been hits (G.I. Blues, Shoppin' Around, Doin' The Best I Can, Blue Hawaii, and Change Of Habit), and of course several songs that helped create a negative stereotype of Elvis that probably made him wince when he sang them (no need to mention them - you know which ones they are). This collection also has an alternate take of "Follow That Dream" not available on any other CD. If you are a hardcore Elvis fan or really like his movies, you should have this 2CD set. If you are a casual fan, you should probably save yourself a few dollars by purchasing the single CD "Elvis Movies" collection.

4 out of 5 stars SINGIN', FIGHTIN', DANCIN', AND ROMANCIN'.......2005-05-13

I grew up on Elvis movies, so this is right up my alley. Let's face it, the best part of an Elvis movie were the songs. And the fighting, of course. Oh, and the girls. But, I agree with Lucky Jackson below. This should have been a Box Set. Elvis has so much movie material it's gotta be hard to please every Elvis movie fan. I'm not so fond of the FUN IN ACAPULCO movie, but all the tunes from it are fun, especially BOSSA NOVA BABY. This also includes some, but not all, of the great material from BLUE HAWAII. FLAMING STAR is a welcome surprise. The only real dud here is WOODEN HEART from GI BLUES. The worst song Elvis ever recorded. It's hard to believe that tune was a number ONE hit. This is still a must have for all Elvis fans. Who's going to buy a soundtrack of every movie the King was in? Not me, I spent it on the Box Sets from the 50s and 60s along with the ELVIS IN LAS VEGAS Box Set.

This contains a lot of the kitsch songs and cornball stuff from the King. And I mean that in the best way. I LOVE IT. (GI BLUES contains some funny lyrics about "fallen arches.") And it takes me back to the days when Elvis was SINGIN', FIGHTIN', DANCIN', and ROMANCIN'.

This is worth it for

"If it wasn't for Billy Ward, there'd be no Jackie Wilson." Most rhythm and blues vocal groups of the 1950s would have been in deep trouble had they lost a lead singer as innovative and influential as Clyde McPhatter. But Billy Ward's Dominoes didn't miss a beat when McPhatter left in the spring of 1953 and formed The Drifters. Billy Ward had a replacement rehearsed and ready to go in the spectacular Jackie Wilson. Blessed with an astonishing vocal range, Jackie effortlessly handled the R&B jumps and ballads that the group was famous for, along with the straight pop fare that Ward was increasingly favoring.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than I had a right to expect!!!.......2004-12-29

When you stop and think about it, the great Jackie Wilson was really just kind of "warming up" during his splendid stint as the young lead singer of Billy Ward and the Dominoes. When the legendary Clyde McPhatter left the Dominoes to pursue a solo career in 1952, Billy Ward was savvy enough to hire Jackie Wilson to replace him. And although the style of the music would change a bit the results were still the same. Billy Ward and His Dominoes continued to churn out some of the finest R&B sides of the 1950's.
Varese Sarabande has done themselves proud in this brand new 2004 collection. You will find 17 sensational tracks from the King/Federal vaults. Those who like down and dirty blues will enjoy tunes like "You Can't Keep A Good Man Down" and "I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town". Gospel fans are sure to appreciate the 1954 release "Above Jacobs Ladder". But in his heart of hearts Jackie Wilson was a crooner who most enjoyed belting out a love song. Happily, there are several outstanding examples of that on this disc. I would call to your attention first and foremost Jackie's incredible vocal performance on "Three Coins In The Fountain". You might recall the Four Aces version that was a huge hit on the pop charts. Jackie Wilson will make you forget all about that one. You thought you liked Tony Bennett's "Rags To Riches"? Tell me what you think after you hear Jackie belt out the same tune. And there are several more outstanding vocal performances here including "Tenderly", "St Louis Blues" and "Learnin' The Blues" from 1955. And as an added bonus the folks at Varese Sarabande have added a couple of extremely rare tracks to this collection from Jackie Wilson's days at tiny Dee Gee records.
"The Rainy Day Blues" and "Danny Boy" were tunes that were released before Jackie joined Billy Ward. A real treat!
As the title of my review indicates, this collection was even better than I expected. There is also a well done 8 page booklet included and the remastering job is top notch! Jackie Wilson would achieve stardom as a solo artist at Brunswick Records after he left Billy Ward. But this collection is compelling evidence that some of his very finest sides may well have been recorded with Billy Ward and the Dominoes. Grab this disc, give it a listen and see what you think!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Jackie Wilson's First Recordings & Hits.......2004-11-17

This CD is a must for any fan of the great Jackie Wilson. It contains all of his recordings he made during his tenure with Billy Ward & His Dominoes (while on the King/Federal label). It also contains the first recordings he made before joining the group. Wilson first recorded two songs on the Dee Gee label in 1952 under the name Sonny Wilson. Backed by the Billy Mitchell Band, these two songs show that Jackie had an amazing voice at 18. The first of these two songs (The Rainy Day Blues) is a great bluesy number. The second (Danny Boy) was a Wilson favorite that he would comit to vinyl three more times throughout his career. While these are fine recordings Wilson seems to lack direction a bit. Just a few months later he would find that direction when he was invited to join the Dominoes on the road. The group was under the command of the ever proper Billy Ward who ran the group like a military outfit. Ward gave Wilson guidance he needed. He gave him vocal lessons, trained him in presenting himself on and off stage. He even suggested the name change of his nick name Sonny back to his given name Jack. Ward became a father figure to Wilson and in 1953 when the groups lead tenor Clyde McPhatter stepped out Jackie Wilson stepped in. The groups first release with Jackie on lead was a hit. The rocking "You Can't Keep A Good Man Down" (which is presented here in an unedited version not heard before). Followed by "Rags To Riches" a #1 hit for Tony Bennett that year. Wilson sings it more as a bluesy ballad that's far superior to the Bennett hit. From here the hits stopped. There are some really great performances like "I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town", "Until The Real Thing Comes Along", "Christmas In Heaven" & "Give Me You". The rest of the songs for the most part are covers of popular hits of the time. Wilson's vocals are incredible on these songs, however, these were mostly recorded because Ward was having his group perform in Vegas. By 1955 Ward took the the group to the Jubilee label, which only saw two non-hit singles released. (Anyone looking for these rare recordings should seek out the CD "The Dominoes Meet The Ravens".) In 1956 the group landed on the Decca label for an album and the groups first pop hit since "Sixty Minute Man", "St. Therese Of The Roses". (Sadly only two songs from these sessions have made it to CD.) After this Ward would take the group onto the Liberty label with the hits "Star Dust" and "Deep Purple" (This period of the groups career is available on the CD "The Best Of Fifties Masters 1957-1959.) Wilson by 1957 signed with Brunswick Records and launched his solo career as well as the careers of future Chess records producer Billy Davis and Motown founder Berry Gordy with the hit "Reet Petite (The Finest Girl You Ever Want To Meet)". As for this great CD I highly recomend it. Aside from the never before released on CD Sonny Wilson sides, it's got great sound, great liner notes and the great Jackie Wilson. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars A vocal genius.......2004-10-08

If Jackie were around today he would still pack em in.
These early Jackie tracks, recorded when he was 18-21, show the amazing vocal range a unique talent Jackie had.
His voice could never be confused with any other artist. Nobody could outsing Jackie and the man lived to sing and perform.

    A true pioneer.

    Buy the album and enjoy.

Though it began as a country label in 1944, Cincinnati-based King Records gravitated to the blues field shortly thereafter, releasing a wealth of classics in both fields during more than a quarter century's run as a highly successful independent imprint. Occupying a spacious factory building at 1540 Brewster Avenue that housed offices, a recording studio, and a pressing plant, founder Syd Nathan's King, Federal and DeLuxe imprints subsequently amassed a vast catalog of postwar black music that resulted in an avalanche of national R&B hits. This collection is the most through overview of this material ever assembled, and will be a delight for blues enthusiasts everywhere.
