Though it follows a standard movie formula and predictable plot twists, the film Hope Floats is saved in part by the above-average performance of Sandra Bullock, portraying a separated woman who finds her way back to her hometown in Texas, daughter in tow. The soundtrack seems to follow in due course, a collection of country and rock (thanks to the Rolling Stones) acts adding shades of twang to songs that, for the most part, all sound fairly familiar. The duds of the bunch, Bryan Adams's "When You Love Someone" and Sheryl Crow's "In Need," are saved in large part by some surprise keepers, courtesy of Garth Brooks, the Mavericks, and Gillian Welch. The covers are interesting enough. Brooks's take on Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love" is modest and pithy and a far cry from the overblown Trisha Yearwood performance of the same tune that codas the collection. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

What a Crying Shame is more commercial and conventional than its debut predecessor, but every bit as enjoyable. Raul Malo has such a terrific voice that he can wear his broken heart on his sleeve without lapsing into self- pity. In fact, the very act of confessing his hurt seems to charge him with rocking excitement, especially when he gets a melodic hook as juicy as that on the title track or the Roy Orbison tribute, ""I Should Have Been True." Trisha Yearwood sings harmony on the saloon ballad ""Neon Blue," and the band turns Bruce Springsteen's ""All That Heaven Will Allow" into the honky-tonk shuffle it was always meant to be. --Geoffrey HimesAmazon.com
A simply stunning country album. Granted, the songs here mark a disappointing retreat from the complex emotional truths and social commentary of the band's previous From Hell to Paradise, but with a sound centered around the gorgeous, soaring tenor of singer-songwriter Raul Malo, the newly simplified songs here still manage to convey rich emotional moods. With updated Ray Price shuffles, Roy Orbison-influenced country pop, a crossover cover of Bruce Springsteen's "All That Heaven Will Allow," and catchy Nashville hits like "O What a Thrill" and the title track, What a Crying Shame includes some of the finest mainstream country music of the last 25 years. --David CantwellCustomer Reviews:

Their most popular album in America.......2005-06-01
With Raul Malo's superb voice and classic songs such as the title track and There goes my heart, this became (and has remained) their most successful album in America. Most of the songs are originals but the album includes fine cobers of O what a thrill (Jesse Winchester) and All that heaven will allow (Bruce Springsteen). Other highlights include Neon blue (with Trisha Yearwood on backing vocals), Pretend and I should have been true.
Although my favorite Mavericks album is the one that followed this (Music for all occasions) and the one after that (Trampoline) provided the Mavericks with a huge new British fan base, I rate this album very highly.

Mavericks Gold.......2006-11-10
Easily the best, most extensive Mavericks collection available.......2006-09-11
The Mavericks' output for MCA/Mercury from 1992-99 consisted of merely four studio albums, a hits set with four new recordings, and a handful of side projects. Such was the quality of their music that even 2004's 20-track Definitive Collection group didn't come close to painting an accurate picture of the group's diversity. That has been rectified with this new two-disc, 41 track retrospective.
Disc one contains a hefty seven tracks from their first three albums: From Hell To Paradise (1992), What A Crying Shame (1994), and Music For All Occasions (1995). The second disc is where things get interesting, with a soundtrack offering ("Blue Moon" from Apollo 13), non-album singles ("I Don't Care," "She Does"), four tracks from international versions of their albums (including a shuffling rendition of the Peter & Gordon hit "A World Without Love"), two live recordings, and a contribution to a Gram Parsons tribute project ("Hot Burrito #1), in addition to seven tracks from Trampoline (1998) and the three tracks from their 1999 hits collection.
The omission of the Beatlesque "Things I Cannot Change" (from Super Colossal Smash Hits Of The 90's) and the collaboration with Trisha Yearwood on the Sinatras' camp classic "Somethin' Stupid" (from Music For All Occasions) keeps Gold from being my "ultimate" Mavericks set. But I'm picky. Gold is a great introduction/summation for Mavericks' neophytes and contains enough fine rarities to entice the devoted fan.
An outstanding collection of their best work.......2006-09-04

Time was when pop radio was an amazingly eclectic place. The Mavericks' latest, Trampoline, bounces between pop styles so effectively that it almost sounds like the world's greatest old-school pop station. "Tell Me Why" is brassy blues-soul like B.B. King was scoring with in 1970; "To Be with You" is countrypolitan down to its strings and backing choir, while "I Don't Even Know Your Name" could be a long-lost Hollies recording. Throughout the disc, we're offered touches of everything from Beatles-esque sitar to Herb Alpert horns, and all of it's pure, powerful pop. The standout, though, is "I've Got the Feeling," which captures the sprawling sound of '70s Elvis with all of the sincerity and magnificence required, and without a jumpsuit in sight. --David CantwellCustomer Reviews:
Flawless!!.......2006-05-07
Raul Malo's vocals are silky smooth and a pleasure to listen to. His voice just seems to glide over the melodies, accompanied by some of the best harmonies in the business. Raul's voice is somewhat remenscent of the late Roy Orbison, especially "Fool #1"
All in all, a musically perfect collection of mostly upbeat tunes that you can't help but tap your feet to.
Country music with horns.......2005-07-25
The album didn't fit easily into any popular category, which may explain why it became far more popular in Britain (where radio stations generally play a broad range of music) than America (where radio stations cater for specific audiences). The first single (Dance the night away) made the top five in the UK pop charts, much to my surprise and delight. There are many other great songs here, all of them originals.
This is an outstanding album, very different from their previous album (Music for all occasions) or indeed anything else they've recorded. Country fans may not appreciate it (unless they have eclectic tastes, like me) but if you enjoy high quality, easy listening music, you might enjoy this album.

If Chris Isaak comes at the Roy Orbison-Ricky Nelson tradition of three-minute country-pop operettas from the pop side, the Mavericks' Raul Malo approaches from the country perspective. Malo's dreamy, creamy tenor is every bit as intoxicating as Isaak's, and his emotional range is much broader. On this, the Mavericks' fourth album, Malo and his three bandmates demonstrate their complete mastery of this territory with its heavily echoed vocals, its low-pitched guitar figures, its chunky backbeat, and its claustrophobic sense of romance that is almost right but not quite. Bassist Robert Reynolds's wife Trisha Yearwood sings a duet with Malo on Nancy Sinatra's "Something Stupid," but the album's highlights are the four songs Malo cowrote with former NRBQ guitarist Al Anderson, including a Tex-Mex rave-up juiced by accordion legend Flaco Jimenez. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

I Am Thrilled To Hear This Music.......2004-03-08
I am of an age that can recall the smell of the dust burning from the radio's vacuum tubes as it warmed and the cadence of an Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison or Gene Pitney hit grew into my ears and imagination.
I purchased both the "Music For All Ocassions" and "What A Crying Shame" CD's, and am happy that I did.
I love this music.
Smooth, and true to the sounds of yesterday and today.......2003-03-05
The only two songs that suggest quite different, are the 12 string set "Here Comes The Rain", which deserved the Grammy it got, and the honky-tex trip "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down", which is so much fun...great video too......
"Foolish Heart" makes jukeboxs across the land ache to play it.....smooth vocals from Raul as well as Shelby Lynne and Lari White backing him up....and great GOLDEN sounds from Nick's tasteful playing on arched top electric guitar.
"My Secret FLame" carries you to lounges way across town at night, and "Missing You" is striking as the ballad of ballads. Bassist Robert Reynolds makes "One Step Away" and "The Writing On The Wall" a happy tempo, while drummer Paul Deakin makes the door in the joint swing wide open in the MEGA snappy "If You Only Knew".
Other soft sounds in "Loving You" and "I'm Not Gonna Cry For You" are sweet, and the surprise her eis the great and best version yet of the classic from a while back "Something Stupid". Trisha Yearwood (Robert's wife at the time) duets with Raul for a well done cover.
Please forgive those people out there for excusing this as a chessy, fluffy, and goo-goo project. It is a romantic themed album mostly, and should be taken as for what it showcases. THREE songs here may play tag in their THEMES sounding "SOMEWHAT" alike, but don't a lot of Beatles songs, or Frank Sinatra tunes do the same? Come on !! Nobody knows how to awaken the sounds of this era better ...than the Mavericks.
p.s.- give the goofy "One Step Away" a chance...it always puts away any gloom in my day......okay dudes / dudettes ?
Whats wrong with songs being just happy....simple?
Highlights: Foolish Heart, truly a song for the jukebox...GRAMMY? OVER HERE...Need another one for this one!
And Here COmes The Rain.....what an original.....
Mavericks by name, mavericks by style.......2002-07-27
This album isn't really country, yet it has a definite country flavor (like so much of contemporary country music). Most of the songs are originals, but there is a stunning cover of Something Stupid (with guest Trisha Yearwood, then married to one of the band) which beats both the famous versions (which I also enjoy) - the original by Nancy and Frank, and the more recent by Robbie and Nicole. I have the British version of the CD, which also includes a cover of Blue Moon, which is better than either Elvis or the Marcels. Great though these covers are, it is the original songs which are the reason to buy this.
There is a great slice of Tex-Mex swing on All you ever do is bring me down, which hints at what would appear on their follow-up album (Trampoline). Most of the other songs are love ballads, beginning with Foolish Heart (this includes backing vocals by Lari White and Shelby Lynne), all sung superbly by Raul in his distinctive voice. The songs have enough variation in styles and tempos to keep the album interesting, yet they all fit together really well.
This was one of my most played albums in the late nineties. I hadn't played it for a while before getting it out to review it, but it still stands as one of my favorite contemporary country albums.

Few country artists of the 1990s have been able to meld a pronounced pop sensibility with the core elements of classic country as effectively as Miami's Mavericks. Their 1992 major-label debut displays a band mature well beyond its years, one not afraid of either tantalizing melodies or country music history. Here the Mavericks reprise four tunes from their eponymous indie debut and toss in four new Raul Malo originals along with covers of Hank Williams (a lackluster "Hey Good Lookin'") and Buck Owens (a much more engaging "Excuse Me"). Their deft mix of old-school honky-tonk, Orbisonesque sob stories, and punchy modern country-rock serves notice of a band with enormous commercial and artistic potential. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:
Good Stuff.......2007-04-12
First commercial recordings.......2005-07-12
The set opens with a very sad song (Mr Jones) about a man returning to a former home after many years, only to find it in a state of semi-dereliction. An even sadder song (Children) closes the set. In between, there are some other sad songs (This broken heart, The end of the line, Forever blue) as well as a Buck Owens cover (Excuse me I think I've got a heartache) but its not all doom and gloom.
The title track is about a Cuban man who finally makes it to America I got you is about a man who puts up with a lot of things, knowing that his partner makes it all worthwhile. A better way is about a man scorning a former partner who cheated on him, having found a new and better partner. Most upbeat of all is the second and last cover here (Hey good looking, the old Hank Williams classic).
If you enjoy listening to the Mavericks and you've already got some of their other albums, you should give this one a listen.

However, the sound quality of the CD is flat----very dull. What a shame. I can't stand to listen to it.
A little sloppy, but fun.......2005-09-28
That has been rectified, finally, by this album. Not all of the songs are gems, but the performances are solid and the horns absolutely add depth to the songs. My only real complaint is that the sound mix isn't great. Of course you lose some of the studio precision in a club setting, but it's not like these tapes came right off the board into your car. They could have cleared up some of the muddiness and mixed the horns and vocals a little higher.
Other than that, this is worth owning if you like the Mavericks.
Excellent live renditions of some of The Mavericks' best material.......2005-07-03
It's not spliced together from various recordings; "Live In Austin, Texas" was recorded in one "take" on June 2, 2004 at Stubb's Bar-B-Q in Austin, and The Mavericks' eclectic blend of rock n' roll, country, latin folk and sophisticated pop works well in this live setting...a couple of songs, like "Siboney" and "San Jose", never really get off the ground, but most of what's here is very good indeed. It's hard to sit still to these swinging, energetic renditions of songs like "Dance The Night Away" and "There Goes My Heart", and while it would have been nice to hear "Things I Cannot Change" and "Here Comes My Baby", there is more than enough good stuff here to keep the listener interested.
Singer Raul Malo is in top form, and all music-lovers should be able find something to like on this 73-minute collection of The Mavericks' melodic country-rock.
I dare you to not start bopping your head like a pigeon to "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down"!

Been There, Would Do It Again.......2004-10-20
The Mavericks now include Eddie Perez on guitar, who fits comfortably in the band with his guitar virtuosity and accompanying vocals. The Mavericks-Eddie, Raul Malo, Paul Deakin, and Robert Reynolds-display consummate professionalism which is only surpassed by their down-to-earth humor and presence. The set list covers hits from the beginning of their career together to solo Raul offerings, including the swoonable "Siboney" originally recorded with Los Super Seven. "Every Little Thing About You" was a crowd favorite and the high temperature did not dissuade the hip swaying and singing along that permeated the night. Raul's voice has been compared to Roy Orbison's and it was a marvel to watch him hit the notes up close. The rest of the band was phenomenal too, with Robert and Paul switching instruments for a song or two. The spicy horn section, Jerry Dale McFadden on keys, and Alberto Salas on percussion made for a wonderful, too short night of incredible music. The Mavericks are better than ever and this album was well worth the wait.

On their first album since 1998, the Mavericks have finally made a Career Move that Matters--they've ditched the desperate, ultra-cool factor and settled down to play straight-head, unselfconscious pop. If Raul Malo & Company had simply done this earlier, it might have buoyed their off-and-on career, and moved them beyond country radio, where they never really belonged in the first place. As such, the album signifies a rebirth, reflected in the self-titling of what amounts to their reunion album. From the opening cut, the driving "I Wanna Know," the band immerses itself in the thrill and energy of `60s British pop, with the usual side trips to the graves of Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley, and to the sonic birthplace of Malo's Cuban heritage. While a faithful remake of the Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe" closes the record, it sets the scene for the album as a whole with its grandiose and theatrical homage to obsessive love. At last, the melodramatic Malo never sounds overreaching, because he's made the material match his nearly operatic vision. Throughout, The Mavericks is smart, sophisticated, and knowing, from its lush and sensuous cocktail forays ("Wondering," "A Little Too Lonely"), to its sexy Latin come-on ("San Jose") and swingy shuffle ("Because of You"), the latter of which recalls the way Presley updated hoary country songs recycled from Hank Snow and Eddy Arnold. Still, it's not the ghost of either of the big Hanks that hangs over this album, but Phil Spector. A dazzling comeback, and one of the year's best albums. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:
I can't believe I bought this CD on the above reviews account !.......2005-12-03
This is soup music at its worst, there's so much good music and talented people around, do not waste time and money and DO listen to the excerpts online prior to buying ... I did warn you !
Once again............2005-02-20
I have not heard the whole album, what I have merits the rating.
So my not having heard this in its entirety, I give the Mavericks special credit for being an enigma. In a way I admire them for having come in through the backdoor, so to speak, being a "country" outfit, and while understanding the genre and tipping their hats to the founding fathers, they enjoyed the popularity country provided them, yet doing it in a disguise. Where I give the Mavericks a lot of credit is that they have displayed their rock/pop sensibilities in their live shows when they were riding the crest of their country popularity. That they have truly branched out, playing what they feel like, and hopefully letting some of those who are country fans and Mavericks fans alike, enjoy some diversity. One thing that needs to be said about the Mavericks is they are true music fans, spanning many facets, and we can hopefully look forward to more output from this band. My hats off to the Mavs.
Satisfying.......2005-02-11
The production values vary from heavy to simple which for this listener, results in a nice surprise now and again. The one thing that is constant is Malo's vox and the talented musicians that make up the core band as well as those they have brought in to make this a very enjoyable collection. Recommended.
Very catchy and fun. Would be a 5 if not for the production.......2004-12-22
There is no doubt that Raul Malo is an outstanding singer and that this release has some great and catchy tunes, but as I listened to it I wanted Raul and the band to let loose. I know that hardcore fans will think that I am crazy and go to town on this review, but I am not a Mavericks hater, but a fan was bothered by how distant the band sounds due to the aforementioned production and orchestration.
After hearing my critique some may think that I did not like this release, but that would not be correct as I think it's a pretty good effort. "I Want To Know" is a great anthem. "In My Dreams" is beautiful and although some criticize Raul for sounding like a poor man's Roy Orbison, I have to respectfully disagree as all artists show their influences and Raul is no different. If you listen carefully you can see that he has also listened to Chris Isaak, Patsy Cline, the Beatles, and Jose Feliciano, and k.d. lang, and Los Lobos just to name a few. "I am Wondering" is simply gorgeous and may be my favorite song on the CD. I love the guitar and harmonica. This song screams summer! "By The Time" shows the band's country waltz roots and has a quiet strength. "Would You Believe" is a catchy classic waiting to be stripped of the busy production that derails Raul emotive singing. "Too Lonely" is sumptuous and seductive.
At first I did not like "Time Goes By" because it seemed a little out of place and Willie Nelson did not quite convince me, but I have grown to love it and it's one of my favorites. I love the guitars and horns!! "San Jose" is the only wrong turn as it is almost killed by a mess of strings at the beginning and it does quite get back on course. "Because Of You" is a party waiting to happen! "Air That I Breathe" is surprisingly good as I was ready to hate it because I wanted Raul to break lose, but to my surprise he has made the song his own and it could become the definitive version of the song.
This CD easily earns 4 stars and I would raise it to 5 if it were not for the production. I've heard these guys live and I can tell you that this is tame compared to the energy in their live shows. Although I am generally not a huge fan of live releases, I would love for these guys to record an unplugged version of this CD or a live one that would show the world that Raul is more than a Roy Orbison sound-alike and that these guys can rock with the best of them.
