It's telling that Richard Marx broke into the music business singing backup vocals for Lionel Richie and writing songs with Kenny Rogers and Chicago, for he kept to the straightforward, middle-of-the-road approach of those acts once he became a recording artist in his own right--not that there's anything wrong with that. A dependable hitmaker throughout the late '80s and early '90s, Marx scored with rockers ("Don't Mean Nothing," "Should've Known Better"), and ballads ("Right Here Waiting," "Endless Summer Nights") alike. Greatest Hits collects those songs as well as the lion's share of his high-end chart action--of which there was plenty, proving that a devotion to craft sometimes pays off better than fickle inspiration. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars All of your favorites are here!.......2007-07-09

I attended both high school and college in the 80s, and I have to admit, Richard Marx holds a special place in my heart. I remember the summer of 1989, when then-boyfriend (now husband) and I were five hours apart, and the song "Right Here Waiting," with its opening lyric of "Oceans apart, day after day" seemed like it was written for us. Okay, it's corny, I know, but who WASN'T moved by corny music in the 80s? And the song that actually made me buy this CD isn't corny at all: it was "Hazard," a haunting, lyrical tune that captivated me from the moment I first caught the video for it years ago. Plus, this CD shows that Marx can rock, too, with songs like "Should've Known Better." Overall, a fun trip down memory lane for 80s music enthusiasts; highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST EVER.......2007-03-29

RICHARD MARX HAS TALENT PURE TALENT & THIS CD REMINDES ME OF ONE OF THE BEST LOVE SONGS OF ALL TIME

5 out of 5 stars Richard Marx Greatest Hits.......2007-03-28

Since changing all my cassettes to cd's, I couldn't wait to get my cd. There's one song "Coming Back" I could listen to 24/7. Since being with Amazon for quite some time now, I've really enjoyed one-stop shopping when looking for the best deals and hard to find music. CD was in great condition

4 out of 5 stars Good summation of his works.......2007-03-26

Richard Marx is well-known for his sappy ballads much more than for his attempt at rock music. This compilation is a good summation of his talents, as most of the album is focused on his popular ballads that became his signature hits. "Endless Summer Nights" is more of an up-tempo ballad, but ended up as one of his biggest hits. The rhythmic tempo, along with nice background melody makes for a nice song to relax to. "Angelia" is another one of his hits that became popular, despite it sounding different than his more traditional-sounding ballads. If you prefer the traditional style of ballads, accompanied by nice piano sounds, "Right Here Waiting" and "Until I Find You Again" are nice ones to listen to. "Hold On To The Night" is a nice ballad as well, with more of a soothing background than the piano-focused sounds of his other hits. In all, this album is a nice compilation of Richard's softer hits, which were more popular than his up-tempo tracks. With this album, you probably won't find too much need to buy any of his other albums. Check it out!

4 out of 5 stars Good one even for the guys!.......2007-03-24

Richard Marx was and is highly underrated! His music is the classic mainstream pop rock the brings back memories of the late 80's and early 90's! My favorite track is "Satified" because just listening to it when you feel down can bring you back up and your whole mood will change. Mr. Marx has a unique raspy voice that separates him from the rest which only his songs require.
I highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Jim Reeves.......2007-06-08

Good compilation. However, on some of the numbers the background music practically covers Jim's great voice. I know strings were in at that time, which really dates the recordings, but somehow they could be toned down a bit. Altogether, a great addition to your collection.

I introduced my elderly parents to the world of CDs by buying them a very easy CD player to use and the Jim Reeves CD was one of the first CDs I purchased for them. They love the selection of songs and are really enjoying it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Voice!.......2005-08-09

This guy has got the richest most sincere voice in the history of male singers in my book. Sweet, sad and silly lyrics adorn all of these songs, and his voice just adds to the quality of the overall music. I definitely recommend this for those who enjoy oldies but goodies.

BELA FLECK & THE FLECKTONES - Greatest Hits of the 20th Century
-
I was introduced to Victor Wooten solo stuff a few years back and was, needless to say, amazed! Through him I found out about Bela Fleck. I had first purchased `Three Flew over the Coo-Coos Nest' (Also amazing) then I followed with this stunning hits album. This is a good place to begin for newbies.

For those that do not know Victor Wooten is the god of bass... He makes Les Claypool, Flea, Geddy Lee, and the like all sound like amateurs. His brother Roy AKA `Future Man' plays the Drumitar (A Combination of a Synth, Drum Machine and a Guitar.) and Bela, plays the Banjo.

The band fuses, Bluegrass, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Country, and more... This album covers a span of roughly 10 years and has many classic songs.

If you like creative, extremely talented music or if you are a Bass or Banjo player, (or by some really fluke chance have a Drumitar) you need to get this CD. (And their other CD's!!!)

Favorite Songs: Shocktime, Sinister Minister, Vix 9 and Roadhouse Blues.

4 out of 5 stars Decent place to start if you would like a sampler of them.......2006-02-18

Although alot of the songs I became attached to aren't on this single disc, there are still some good examples of what this band has done over the years...as well as a few that havn't been released previously on CD. Each one of their original studio CDs kinda took a life on its own...each encompassing a certain era of the Flecktones throughout their career. Especially with the change from Howard Levy to Jeff Coffin, there are definite flavors from one CD to the next...maybe I only see it that way. Anyway, if you are starting out listening to this band, keep that in mind as you go through each song. Each cut, if you like it, would probably mean you would like the disc that it came from. This disc does do a nice job of giving examples from the different time periods of the Flecktones time as a band.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic...an eyeopener to those who do not know Fleck.......2001-06-23

I bought this CD on the advise of the Tower records manager in Bangkok ( good taste)whilst never having heard of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

It was an absolute eye-opener and I am really hooked. The opening with "Sinister Minister" makes you sit up straight and, yes, I cannot wait ontil I have found a good live version of this track.

The combination of banjo, mandolin and the virtuoso bass work of Vince Wooten does not cease to amaze me. It contains so many traditional elements and, yet, it is so contemporary.

In this age of throw away music it is very satisfactory to listen to a band where every individual member is in absolute control of his instrument and indeed a master on it.

It is difficult to put this music into a category except in the category of "very good music". It may be true that for the real aficionados this may not be the best ( see other reviews) but I think for those not familiar with this band it is a very good introduction.

I will certainly go out now and buy "Live Art".

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best.......2000-02-16

Any Flecktone fan will of course add this to their collection, but the 'Greatest' Flecktone work is 'Live Art'. The two new tracks are classic Flecktones. Buy 'Live Art' first, and then you'll want 'Greatest Hits of the 20th Century'.

5 out of 5 stars Really good.......2006-08-16

Bought this CD before going to see Ricky as he played in our small town. This CD will give you a great range of his songs. All are really good if you like his Bluegrass/country style. The only thing missing with his live show (July-2006) was that he doesn't do his older country songs anymore. His shows are all bluegrass now. Not bad, but wish he would have played more than a couple from this album when he performed live.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful album.......2006-07-29

This is a classic album. Ricky Skaggs's great voice is perfectly featured in this collection with hits such as "Highway 40 Blues," "Crying My Heart out over you," "You May see me walking," and "You've got a lover." The collection of songs couldn't have been better. If you like Ricky Skaggs, you will love this album. I guarantee it. You will not be disappointed if you get it.

4 out of 5 stars *both* bluegrass and country.......2005-01-20

Whether you prefer Ricky's country music or bluegrass music, there's a combinaton of both on this album. I'm a BIG fan of his bluegrass music (BLUGRASS RULES!), so I wasn't personally overwhelmed with the electronic and steel guitar stuff on this album - but my least favorite Ricky Skaggs song is WAY better than 99% of everything else that's out there!

4 out of 5 stars Great Tunes But Only Half Of His Best.......2003-07-18

In the early '80s, Ricky Skaggs was one of the leaders of the New Traditionalist movement who steered country away from the pop crossover stylings typified by Kenny Rogers and Barbara Mandrell and back toward its roots. Skaggs' sound is actually an amalgamation of bluegrass, western swing, and traditional country, with vocals that drive home his old-fashioned, mountain upbringing.

Not possessing the matinee idol good looks of a George Strait, it is a tribute to his immense skills as a musician (fiddle, mandolin, acoustic guitar, and banjo) and singer (one of themost supple tenors around) that Skaggs was able to make such a big impact in modern country music. This set captures about half of his hits on the Epic label in the '80s.

Skaggs' early releases were dominated by remakes of songs made popular in the 50s and 60s by his bluegrass heroes with Flatt & Scruggs "Don't Get Above Your Raisin'" and "Crying My Heart Out Over You" getting the set off to a lesiurely start, followed by Reno & Smiley's "I Wouldn't Change You If I Could," the Stanley Brothers' "Don't Cheat In Our Hometown" and Bill Monroe's toe-tapping "Uncle Pen." Interspersed covers of Webb Pierce's "I Don't Care" and "Honey (Open That Door)" offer a change of pace dripping with classic country and western style. The disc winds down with Skaggs adding a bit more variety to his musical pallet on the power picker "Country Boy" and the live "Cajun Moon."

By the early 90s, traditional country was bombarded by the noisier sounds of contemporary artists like Garth Brooks, and country radio was concentrating on artists under 40. Skaggs was no longer an upper-chart placing presence and in 1992, he and Epic parted ways. To get all of the classic Epic hits, check out the two-disc Country Gentleman: The Best Of Ricky Skaggs.

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection of His Best.......2002-03-13

Skaggs' mile-deep bluegrass roots were brought to the forefront by a generous record label during much of his CBS tenure, and this collection brings the best of that era to light. Skaggs' masterpieces, "Uncle Pen," "Highway 40 Blues," and "Country Boy," were ahead of their time when their chart runs began (the bluegrass/new-traditionalist revival's popularity didn't hit it's stride until 1986) but he quickly built a sizeable audience, every top music industry award, and managed to corrall several #1 singles. He did it all by meticulously sticking to his roots, corageously including as many as 2 Bill Monroe tunes per CD. There were stellar moments near the end of his CBS tenure ("Humingbird, "Fields of Home") that have been omitted here, but that serves notice that his best simply can't be contained on one CD. Skaggs' astonishing guitar/mandolin flat-picking abilities paired with his brilliant tenor singiing style convincingly harken to his idol and former bandleader, 'Big Mon,' and his ability to escape the syrupy trappings of 1980's commercial country music is nearly as amazing as the cohesive mixture of bluegrass and well-sung ballads collected here.

Buck Owens's role as co-host of Hee Haw hokum was imprinted so strongly on the public's consciousness that it tends to overshadow his musical legacy. As this set of chart-toppers attests, no country artist dominated the early-to-mid 1960s like the Bard of Bakersfield. His twisted, elongated syllables and twangy interplay with guitarist Don Rich put a signature stamp on material ranging from the uptempo "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail"--a pop crossover smash as well--to the heartfelt balladry of "Together Again" and "Only You (Can Break My Heart)." A late '80s revival of "Streets of Bakersfield" in duet with Dwight Yoakam, Owens's leading disciple, put Buck back atop the charts. Liner testimonials from Chris Isaak and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons attest to the reach of his influence, while his breakthrough hit, "Act Naturally," inspired a popular cover (on the Help! album) by the Beatles. --Don McLeese

Album Description

This collection documents the hits of country music icon Buck Owens as he defined the Bakersfield sound and became a major architect of west coast country overall.

I love this CD. When I was a child I used to listen to Buck Owens all the time. As I grew I just started listening to newer singers. I went on the Web and found the album and decided to order it. I love it. I like listening to the older singers again. Listening to the older singers bring back my childhood and my life when I used to live in Idaho.

4 out of 5 stars I love the Dirt Band.......2006-07-09

This CD does give you the essence of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of hits.......2006-01-18

This cd of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band songs is great for a starter collection. Of notable interest on this cd is Mr. Bojangles, which is presented here in the shorter "B" side version of the song. The song was issued on both sides of the original 45, one with a minute and a half long prelude, then the song kicks in. When you flip the 45 over you get this version, which actually starts differently than the version on the A side 45.

For a very nice cheap budget price, this cd is a near definitive overview of their early hits, and I recommend this to anyone. Some of the other great songs on this cd are Buy For Me The Rain, House At Pooh Corner, and Will The Circle Be Unbroken.

If you want to dig a little deeper into the band's music, other cds that I recommend are "Dirt, Silver and Gold" for more songs from this era (which includes the original A side version of Mr. Bojangles), and also "20 Years of Dirt" for "Dance Little Jean".

Again, the B side version of Mr. Bojangles is on this cd, and it is in fact hard to find on cd. This cd has the basic early hits by the group, and is a must for anyone who likes Mr. Bojangles and wants to hear more of their hits.

5 out of 5 stars Great album!.......2004-01-05

This is my only album of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and it is great. I hadn't even heard of them until the 4th of July last year when they came to my town. I didn't get to see them play but I heard they were great so I bought one of their cd's and loved it. One song I wish was on here though is "Fishin' in the Dark." That is a great song. Great cd and worth the buy.

5 out of 5 stars The Dirt Band's Greatest Album.......2002-04-16

This is the greatest collection of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's late 70's and early 80's songs that I have seen. I orginally had the cassette version, and I just had to find this exact album on CD. This album WILL take you back to a time 20 years ago and let you feel like you did back then. The melodies capture a great era of music that we will never see again. I have frequently heard An American Dream on pop music stations. I even heard Make a Little Magic in a department store last week. This is just a can't live without for any Dirt Band fan. I can only wish that this particular album was more available on CD!

4 out of 5 stars Real Country.......2001-07-17

It is hard to find good country music with all the new stuff comming out. But when I listen to the CD it brings back thoughts of being back on my farm with my family. I remember where I come from but more importantly makes me appreciate how things are now. It has a good feeling about the whole CD I really love it. Listening to the CD makes me feel like I am back in the glorious states once again.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great collection!.......2007-05-11

This is a great collection of BJ Thomas's hits, 24 of them. The only knock on this cd is that some of the songs have audible tape hiss which has been a problem with some of his other hits collections. Still, its well worthwhile to listen to and is the best collection I've heard of of his recordings, especially the earlier ones.

I was able to purchase a new copy at a lower price than Amazon's listed price from the other sellers links. I just can't help believing this is the best compilation of BJ Thomas's hits.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2005-09-12

If you are a BJ Thomas fan, you need to get this one, and smile and be nostalgic!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-01-07

I am very pleased with this CD. There is more than 75 minutes of music and it includes all of B.J. Thomas's hits. I rate 6 of the songs as very good or excellent. My favorites are "No Love At All", "Rock & Roll Lullaby" and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry".

I agree with the other reviewers that this is the one to buy for a B.J. Thomas collection.

5 out of 5 stars Look no further.....this is definitely the one you want.......2003-09-03

Spanning a period of more than 20 years and containing hits from 4 different labels, this Australian import is clearly the finest B.J. Thomas collection ever assembled. The first cut is the 1966 classic "Billy and Sue" which was released on Nashville's Hickory label. What follows are 18 cuts containing just about every one of B.J.'s hits on the Scepter label. Everyone is familiar with his biggest hits "Hooked on A Feeling" and of course his signature song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head", but frankly I am partial to some of his lesser known hits including "The Eyes of A New York Woman", "Mighty Clouds of Joy" and "Mama". But whatever your preference you will surely find them all here. Also included are a couple of his hits for MCA including "Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" as well as well as hit remake of the Beach Boys classic "Don't Worry Baby".
The final two cuts are from his days at Columbia. At this point in the mid-eighties, his records were only being played on country and adult contemporary stations. In my opinion, "Whatever Happened to Old Fashioned Love?" is one of his best discs ever. So spend an extra few bucks and pick up one of the best values you'll ever find.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection.......2003-02-20

This is the most comprehensive collection of BJ Thomas hits out there, and sounds great too. If you like BJ Thomas, this is definitely the "Greatest Hits" CD to get.

5 out of 5 stars Vern Gosdin Greatist Hits.......2006-11-05

Hello Everyone:

I am not a writer but a lover of music. This is a great album and whether you are a Vern Gosdin fan or not this is a super country album to add to your collection. Really good!!

3 out of 5 stars Someone Did Me Wrong.......2006-10-13

I finally got this CD in today to find out that the track "If You're Gonna Do Me Wrong (Do It Right)" Is not there anymore on the newest pressings of this CD. Come one, if your going to throw something way, why not some of the interviews, The remix, or "Turn, Turn, Turn".

5 out of 5 stars Vern Gosdin.......2006-01-15

This is the first album I ever bought of Vern Gosdin. It is a great compilation of his best music. Reminds me of Earl Thomas Connaly.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Love the voice. This CD? Not so much. .......2007-06-05

I love Vern Gosdin's voice. I got this CD, but it was disappointing. It has all of his classics, but they are newly recorded, so they don't sound the same. Just stick with Very Best of the Voice and you'll be satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars love this cd.......2006-05-20

I love this...if you are a vern gosdin fan...its a must have!

5 out of 5 stars 10 Years of Hits - Newly Recorded .......2006-03-19

He sounds as good as ever. Great CD for country fans when country was really country!

5 out of 5 stars Great country.......2005-09-24

Vern Gosdin is a highly underrated singer. He is old school. It is a relief to hear his music with "country" sound. "If you're gonna do me wrong (do it right)", is awesome. His voice sounds like a combination of George Jones and Trace Adkins.

2 out of 5 stars New Recordings.......2005-08-03

Once upon a time in the early 1980's, Vern Gosdin had a long string of hits. It was for a record company that really didn't have all it's stuff together. Well that company went belly up, and the original recordings seemed lost forever.

Jump ahead to 1987, Vern Gosdin resurfaces on Epic Records, and has a whole new string of hits, and garners loads of attention from critics and award shows. Fans take notice again, only they just can't seem to acquire his earlier hits such as "I Can Tell By The Way You Dance." Well Vern and Epic try their best and do what they can. So Vern heads back to the studio and re-records his greatest hits, doing his best to make them sound like they did on the original recordings. Oh how welcome it was....back in 1989.

Now jump ahead to 2005, all of those Vern Gosdin recordings from the 1980's are now available in their original, and far superior form. This collection, while terrific in 1989, is now completely rendered obsolete.

As with many remakes, they don't hold up to the originals. Vern sounds like he's just plain tired of singing "I Can Tell By the Way You Dance."

The only reason to have this cd, and I must say it's a good reason is for "This Ain't My First Rodeo," which is an original song, and deserved to be a hit.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful memories.......2007-03-14

Merle has that wonderful early country music warmth when he sings. It is all about his experiences and his feelings. He doesn't rely on all the electronic back ups to high light his voice, it is just him.

I was fascinated to find out that Merle either wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on this CD. I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes the "real country" music. All you have to do is listen to this CD and you will know that Merle has lived what he writes about. You will like this CD!
