A former oil field worker, Toby Keith has always known how to capture the passions of blue-collar men and women, desperate to blow off steam at the end of the day. As such, he's stocked his latest album with themes designed to push all the right emotional buttons--patriotism, Jesus, buddy love, fast women, and reality altering substances. "I Love This Bar," the first single, offers a kinder, gentler Keith than the boot-shoving redneck of "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American)." But as he segues to "American Soldier," a song so gung-ho and puffed up that it could be a musical recruitment poster, you know he's gearing up for a scud missile of a payoff. Sure enough. By the time he gets to "The Taliban Song," a comedic and cartoonish skewering of The Enemy, recorded in concert, it's hard to remember that he once wrote well-crafted ballads of romantic infatuation. Now it's all grandstanding, baby, even the best-written song, a jazzy, talking blues which fillets his critics. If he's not exactly "Shock'n Y'All" as the title suggests, he's certainly putting his "Baddest Boots" forward. --Alanna Nash
Customer Reviews:
I would give it zero stars if I could.......2007-07-19
A friend of mine gave it to me as a present. She said it was modern Country music and I should listen to it although she knows I am not into that music genre. After listening to it I thought it was the worst album of all time. I didn't tell her it was not a good pick because I didn't want to offend her. To be frank I would give it zero stars if I could. It shows the man has no talent. He can't sing. His vocals on 'Time For Me To Ride' are terrible. The way he sings 'Sweet' in a high-pitched voice is so irritating I could barely listen to the entire song. The lyrics are also an indication of his lack of talent. I was taken aback by his lack of knowledge of subjects such as Muslims and their culture in 'The Taliban Song'. He should read to learn about those people instead of just talking drivel about them. He should also get his facts straight before writing a song about a conflict. Did it ever occur to him that the 'big jets' had killed the Taliban fighters and innocent civilians alike? Is he aware that the Taliban is still around and a threat to the people of Afghanistan? What he talks about is not the reality of war. I was quite shocked to hear his audience cheer when he sings about bombing people. It is the most stupid song I have ever heard. That 'Mr Bush gets on the phone with Iraq and Iran to tell them not to do any business with the Taliban' is pure nonsense. It sounds like it is written by a twelve-year-old. I was amazed at how ignorant and immature this guy is. His description of a day in the life of a soldier in 'American Soldier' is not correct. Soldiers are not exactly like factory workers who get up and go to work early in the morning. I bet some Christians are offended by the caricature he makes out of Jesus in 'If I was Jesus'. He seems to be interested in bars, booze, drugs and women. If it is modern 'Country' it is just as bad as Rap.
I wouldn't recommend this cd to anybody. I gave it away because there is nothing in this album that makes it enjoyable. A few customers say major record labels can be convinced to release rubbish like this and pass it off as Country music. I guess that is true.
this is right message in music . .......2007-06-25
MR toby kieth got it right again . He brings accross a good voice and a message that is right on . And it is a breath of fresh air to hear an artist think before he opens up in voice . HIS views are so right .Not as on target and red white and blue . THAT should have been number one song of the yr. But very good .
If you like Toby Keith then you'll love this!.......2007-05-30
If people don't like this genre then why bother reviewing? If you want fruit for breakfast don't go for the eggs and bacon then complain it's too heavy. This is simply great hard edged country from a man who says what he feels. America would be safer if more people like Toby spoke out. Only slight criticism, please do more ballads Toby!
Toby's rock'n y'all!.......2007-03-26
