5 out of 5 stars COUNTRY CLASSICS.......2007-04-19

THIS IS THE PERFECT GREATEST HITS COLLECTION OF DON GIBSON , THE SOUND IS PERFECT , THE RECORDINGS ARE THE ORIGINAL , IF YOU LIKE DON GIBSON THEN YOU'LL LOVE THIS CD.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-02-15

Not the original recordings and not spelled out in the ads. My fault I should have listened to the samples. Now I have to buy what I thought I was getting.

4 out of 5 stars Some RCA Remakes, some Hickory Classics.......2005-11-04

Don Gibson had 27 charted records while recording for Hickory or Hickory/ABC. This CD picks up 7 or 8 of his Hickory hits, with the rest being remakes of his RCA successes. The remakes are well worth being heard, but I'd really like to see a decent collection focusing the Hickory hits. Gibson's last top ten for RCA had occurred in 1966 except for a pair duets with Dottie West. The switch to Hickory in 1970 revitalized his career with "Country Green" going to #5 in 1971, "Woman (Sensuous Woman)" reaching #1 in 1972 and several more top 15 tunes.

4 out of 5 stars Remakes?.......2005-04-17

I don't think of these as 'remakes'!, April 17, 2005
Reviewer: D. G. Bradford (Oklahoma) - See all my reviews

To Cory L. Schwent and other reviewers - Some of these definitely aren't remakes. He originally wrote some of these songs so recordings by other artists are 'remakes'. Many more famous artists have recorded his songs which shows how very talented this man was. Oh Lonesome Me and I Can't Stop Loving You were even written in the same afternoon! He may not have been the greatest singer but you can't beat his songwriting....

3 out of 5 stars Ain't It Always Like That?.......2004-12-09

You finally get all the songs you want to hear from a certain recording artist and there's a passel of remakes in it? Sure, the songs have a charm of their own done again years later, but some people (like myself) remember every little nuanace of a favorite song, a small note on the guitar, the singer going a little higher on a certain note, etc. that recalled a time or times back when, when you and that special person were listening to the song when it was new. If you don't care about such little things, sure, the songs are good, yes, they are, so buy it. We ARE talking Don Gibson after all.

If Don Gibson is mentioned these days, it's usually as the country songwriter responsible for standards like "I Can't Stop Lovin' You," "Sweet Dreams," and "Oh Lonesome Me." This CD is a reminder that Gibson was also a commanding, sensitive singer who first put those titles--and eight others included here--in the Country Top 10. Producer Chet Atkins only lightly sweetened these early Nashville Sound tracks, allowing Gibson's affecting style plenty of room. His greatest performance might be on "Sea of Heartbreak," a Hal David-penned number that's a small lesson in controlled vocal emotion. In addition to Gibson's most notable hits, this collection also offers several fine album tracks (a stylishly low-key version of "Camptown Races," the midtempo near-rocker "It Has to Be"). Astonishingly, the liner notes point out, Gibson has yet to be inducted into country's Hall of Fame. If nothing else, though, this reissue should help reset the balance in appreciation of Gibson's work. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Don Gibson Sings Beyond Country.......2007-02-17

Don Gibson matured with this CD. His voice has that silky smooth sound we know from music on the radio. He may be called a "Country Legend", but the songs on this CD go beyond country. This is a good CD.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2007-01-15

Listening to Don Gibson is always soo great! I really enjoy this CD, including all the good songs I remember!

4 out of 5 stars Okay, Four and a HALF Stars.......2004-12-09

It doesn't look like there's heavy traffic here to see this compilation by The Sad Poet. The Amazon info is dated also for Don Gibson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001, two years before he passed away in Nashville. This is a pretty good package of Big Don's music, some really solid hits. Don had a roller coaster career what with drug and alcohol problems but he left us with some fine music much of which is in this compilation. Too bad it doesn't include his later (1972) country hit, "Woman, Sensuous Woman" but that could have been for another label. This one is worth the price and I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Collection.......2001-05-26

Well-focused and more thorough than other Gibson collections. A real effort was made here, both in the song selection, and the extensive liner notes, to emphasize the collaboration between Don Gibson and his producer/guitarist Chet Atkins. These two exceptional artists truly created in the artistic, not merely commercial sense, a new, more urban style of country music. Gibson's "Big Four" compositions are here:"Oh Lonesome Me", "Legend In My Time", "Can't Stop Lovin' You", and "Sweet Dreams". It's nice to find "Who Cares" and "Don't Tell Me Your Troubles" together on a single disc collection, as these two songs are usually buried in multi-disc sets. They are, deservedly, highlighted better in this album. One can listen to this album, and like a collection of mid-40's Bill Monroe, or Elvis mid-50's Sun sessions, get an appreciation of something going on that was actually taking a genre somewhere new-- in this case, the development of the Nashville Sound. The liner notes do a very good job of detailing just what Gibson and Atkins set out to do. My personal favorite 'throw-in' cut is Camptown Races', the Stephan Foster piece of Americana that gets tender loving care from vocalist and producer. Putting the new sound to work here is like restoring an antique to new luster. If I had my 'druthers' here, I'd have picked a couple of Gibson self-penned tunes... maybe "Times Were Good", or "Far, Far, Away", instead of "Funny, Familiar, Forgotten Feelings" and "Did'nt Work Out". The former, a Mickey Newberry tune, is good, but is a little heavy on the 'doo-wop' for me. But, that's just me playin' favorites, and nitpicking, in light of the overall quality of this album. Don Gibson was one of country music's true originals, and his artistry is wonderfully portrayed here.

3 out of 5 stars A Young Don Gibson.......2007-02-17

There are good songs on this CD, but Don Gibson's voice has not matured, or the studio where this particular CD was recorded did not have accustics to help enhance his voice.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Collection.......2005-11-19

And, they're original recordings. Here is an affordable, yet absolutely complete, collection of original Don Gibson recordings. Of course, we have Bear Family records to thank. I would gladly pay more for cd's if companies would release albums and compilations of the same quality as this. This CD includes all of the greats, to include: "Sea Of Heartbreak", "Oh Lonesome Me", "A Legend in My Time", "Blue, Blue, Day", and in my opinion, his finest, "Lonesome Number One". A total of 26 perfectly penned, sung, and recorded songs. You'd be foolish to pass this one up.

5 out of 5 stars The best collection from one of the greatest singers.......2005-04-06

I remember listening to "Wayne Rainey on ye radio dial at WCKY Cincinatti, Ohio" through my grandmother's bedroom wall late at night as I drifted off to sleep, and these Don Gibson songs are the same sounds from my childhood. Forget the remakes and don't take any chances on other collections. The subtlety is missing from the newer stereo versions and Don Gibson's voice had become much weaker, not holding the long notes as they were on the originals. Both male and female background vocals are on the old version of Sea of Heartbreak (my favorite Don Gibson Song). Female vocals are missing on the stereo remakes. The newer Sweet Dreams is unuseful after hearing the original. The old versions are ten million million million times better (ten to the nineteenth). -- Gerard Owmby, Fairfield, Iowa

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Recordings from a Great Talent.......2001-03-28

Don Gibson was a very popular performer in the late 50's and 60's. Curiously he has not been canonized by an industry always willing to enshrine even it's lesser stars.

There is no doubt that Don Gibson is a genuine legend. His voice alone should be enough to solidify his legacy. On top of that add his abilities as a songwriter. He wrote a slew of classics including "Sweet Dreams", "Oh, Lonesome Me", "Sea of Heartbreak" & "Legend In My Time. If that's not enough to convice you, just listen to his energetically strummed Django Reinhardt-inspired rythym guitar.

I've played "Sea of Heartbreak" for lots of people who said they didn't like country and they all immediately fell in love with it. While there is a little filler on here (and what country artist doesn't have some) there is plenty to fall in love with, including rarites like "Sweet, Sweet Girl" and "If You Don't Know the Sorrow".

For anyone with more than a passing interest in this artist or in good country music, this Bear Family collection is the only one to consider. It's the only one I have found that includes the ORIGINAL recordings of all of his classics. Avoid those lower-priced and far inferior Curb & Hickory sets of late-career re-recordings. Don Gibson deserves better and so do you.

3 out of 5 stars Quality Leaves Something.......2000-11-24

For the true Don Gibson fan, like myself, this cd is worth owning. The cuts are in chronological order, and the earlier ones are great. More recent cuts often leave something to be desired.

A great performer like Gibson deserves better, as do his fans, but there isn't much to choose from at this point.

1 out of 5 stars One of the greatest voices ever. One of the worst albums ever........2007-06-26

When Roy was on Monument records he was writing some of the greatest songs ever written, singing like no one else could, and recording and arranging his material with just enough instruments to create those awesome moods.(The ones Bruce Springstien said are "best listened to in the dark.") He and his producer at Monument Fred Foster, build the arrangements for those songs to showcase Roy's incredible voice. Those recordings never grow old or out of date for me and I still carry a "Best Of" in my car that gets played at least once or twice a month. I love Roy Orbison and wish he was around recording material like he was doing on "Mystery Girl" when he passed away in 1988.
There is not one song on these recent MGM albums that would fit on a "Best Of Orbison" collection. The arrangements are over blown, the background vocals are all over the place, often intrusive and Orbison sounds like a minor character on his own records. Listen to the quality of Roy's voice on a Monument record compared to an MGM record. On Monument his voice "is" the record. Big powerful and strong with alot of depth. On the MGM recordings his voice sounds thin and is mixed poorly into the overblown backgrounds. And as for song selection, Roy Orbison should not be doing a cover album of Don Gibson or Hank Williams tunes. Orbison was a class "A" songwritter. WOW. I really hate this stuff.

4 out of 5 stars The Best and Weakest of Roy's MGM Years.......2006-12-15

Don Gibson was one of the truly great country singer/songwriters. He had an unusual vocal style that is hard to explain to someone who hasn't heard him. His songwriting skills were astounding, for example I can't stop loving you, Oh Lonesome Me, Sweet Dreams etc. The master interpreter of Don Gibson had to be Roy Orbison. The 12 songs from Orbison sings Gibson are all first rate Nashville sound types of recordings. I can't understand why Oh Such A Stranger wasn't a megahit on the country charts -the arrangement is gorgeous, Orbison's vocals so emotional and heart-breaking. I love the fuzz guitar on Yes I'm Hurting. I love the country waltz Blue Blue Day, and the raucous What about me. There isn't a bad song among these 12. As for Roy sings Hank Williams, it's not as strong. There are gems such as Last night I heard you crying in your sleep but it is less inspired and the production and arrangements aren't as strong as on the Sings Don Gibson songs. Not bad, just not as excellent. At the risk of sounding repetitive, if you love Roy Orbison, buy this set because you will enjoy it. Roy was simply the greatest hands down, and there are too many wonderful songs to pass up on this collection.

1 out of 5 stars Beware, NOT Original Versions.......2007-04-03

I bought this cd a little too fast and did not notice it was from a knock off firm and the resulting recordings are pale imitations of Don's original hits. This one goes in the trash bin while I seek out the real stuff.

2 out of 5 stars A pale substitute of the great Don Gibson.......1999-02-09

All of Gibson's recordings after 1968 (his last year with RCA)have this "sound-alike" quality, a cheap imitation of the great recordings Don made under the watchful eye of Chet Atkins, during his RCA years. To hear Don Gibson at his best, be sure the label says RCA, not Hickory.

4 out of 5 stars Don Gibson's Hits of the 60's.......2006-12-11

This double CD called Anthology holds the Don Gibson Hits from 1958 till
1969 which is just the half of his carreer although the best part of it.
It also holds his own versions of songs that other singers scored big
hits with like Ray Charles, Ronnie Milsap and especially Roy Orbison who
dedicates a whole album to him and that every Roy and/or Don Gibson
fan should own. It's still available on a double CD called Roy Sings
Don Gibson/Hank Williams The Roy Orbison Way. These are incredible cover
versions as if Don had especially written them for Roy.
This double CD is of the best quality available and therefore the best
Don Gibson compilation one can obtain.

5 out of 5 stars At last - a serious anthology of Don's music on CD.......2004-09-28

Bear Family have released a couple of boxed sets of Don's music for his committed fans, but for those that aren't so committed, choice has been somewhat limited. Now comes this double CD that does justice to his legacy. Perhaps it could have been a little more generous - there is room for a lot more than 32 tracks - but all the essentials are here.

Don was consistently successful on the country charts and also achieved pop crossover success, notably with Sea of heartbreak, Lonesome number one and Oh lonesome me. He wrote most of his own songs, some of which became more famous via cover versions, among them Sweet dreams (Patsy Cline), Too soon to know (Roy Orbison), Just one time (Connie Smith) and, most famous of all, I can't stop loving you (Ray Charles). Ronnie Milsap took his cover of Legend in my time to the top of the country charts in the seventies. Don's own versions of all the songs are in this anthology, Don didn't write Funny familiar forgotten feelings, but it was a country hit for him before Tom Jones covered it and had a UK pop hit with it.

Among the other highlights are Blue blue day, Give myself a party, Don't tell me your troubles, Far far away, his cover of Camptown races and his duets with the wonderful Dottie West that close the anthology.

This is the best compilation of Don's fifties and sixties music yet released (if you don't count the boxed sets) and is likely to remain so for a long time to come.
