Amazon.com essential recording
In 1994 Cash stunned the music world with this commanding collection of 13 solo acoustic performances that roll from gospel to cowboy to sarcastic folk. Minimalism had long been Cash's meal ticket, but this time around, producer Rick Rubin stripped it all away, recording the bulk of the record in Cash's cabin or his own living room (two cuts were captured live at the Viper Room in front of an emphatic audience). Cash offers five typically direct and vivid originals, but he also seizes control of songs by Kris Kristofferson, Nick Lowe, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Loudon Wainwright. Forty years after "Hey Porter," Cash delivers a pure, naked, and incredibly moving record that, dare we say, rivals the impact of his greatest achievements. --Marc Greilsamer

Although it squarely falls in the "jukebox musical" category, Jersey Boys doesn¹t try to integrate its songs in an artificial plotline. The show tells the story of the early-1960s group the Four Seasons, and the musical numbers tend to be introduced in context, as when songwriter Bob Gaudio comes up with a tune, or the quartet performs a show. This allows Jersey Boys to flow better than some of ill-fated peers, and the actors can shine without having to bend backward to accommodate an inane book. The show's most (only) daring move is to start with a hip-hop-tinged French-language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," an actual hit in France in 2000. After that it's all VH1-biopic territory, but it's done with so much flair, taste and energy that the ride's a fun one. The Four Seasons had enough hits ("Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," etc.) to easily fill an evening at the theater, so it's left to the cast to do right by them. And it does, particularly John Lloyd Young as the band¹s star lead, Frankie Valli. Young hits all the falsetto notes and brings real freshness to the part. His "Can¹t Take My Eyes Off You," a second-act peak, is signed, sealed and delivered with a star's acumen. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Recounting the rich history and reliving the timeless sounds of the phenomenal Frankie Vallie & The 4 Seasons, the new Broadway musical Jersey Boys answers the musical-and philosophical question, "How did four would-be wise guys from Newark, NJ, become one of the greatest chart-topping successes in pop music history?" Jersey Boys celebrates legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi who, as the 4 seasons, wrote their own songs, invented their own identity, and sold 175 million records worldwide-all before they were 30.

3 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys (2005 Original Broadway Cast).......2007-07-19

Singers doesn't try to make the same sound the same original. The music sounds like the voices don't care about what they are doing. I was kinda disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys.......2007-07-08

Purchased CD prior to seeing the show when visiting USA in '06. A fun lively show - the CD now captivates those fond memories of not only the foot tapping music & show but also our special time in New York.

5 out of 5 stars Like being there.......2007-07-05

Have seen the play twice. This album lets me relive the experience anytime anyplace. A great piece of Rock n roll history.

5 out of 5 stars A step back in musical time.......2007-07-05

My wife and daughter didn't know about the Four Seasons but I did. When I told them I wanted to see the musical on stage, there was no interest so I bought this product and they heard it in the car. We went to the stage musical soon after and we have listened to the entire disk so many times I've lost track. I created a Four Seasons monster in my daughter. She's fifteen and has memorized most of the songs and sings along while we are driving somewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great music, but missing too much.......2007-07-04

I saw this play at age 16 with no idea who the Four Seasons were, but instantly fell in love with it. The problem is, this soudntrack cuts a two hour play into less than an hour on CD. Most of the dialouge is missing, only including enough to let each member of the group at least say something. I know many play soundtracks cut out dialouge, but what confuses me is why this stretches to the music as well. What is there is amazing, but I don't understand why most of the songs are cut to half, and sometimes even a third or fourth of their original lengths. I love this CD, just be aware that you are hardly getting any story, just clips of lots of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons songs. So, great music and dialouge, just not enough for a musical soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars RIP, BEVERLY SILLS 1929-2007.......2007-07-03

The great American diva's passing was announced today.

This wonderful CD set is a perfect compilation of her art as can be found anywhere. Her finest roles and performances are captured here, most of them derived from the Westminster/Audio Treasury recordings from her prime. Listening to them again demonstrates to me why she was so special, and such an inspiration to music lovers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Brava Sills!.......2007-02-02

A very nice compilation of Sillsiana. The different cuts on this CD provide a nice illustration of her work. Let me briefly describe my response to a sampling of the works on this CD:

Bellini, I Puritani, "Son vergin vezzosa." Wonderful. Sutherland owns this--but so does Beverly Sills. Contemporary sopranos such as Netrebko and Gruberova have also sung this on their respective CDs, and while their product is nice, it simply does not compare. Sills is remarkably agile with her voice; the trills are well done; she cleanly hits high notes; the overall effect can only be described as wonderful.

Bellini, Norma, "Mira, o Norma". This is smoothly sung and very melodic. The technique that she exhibits does not overwhelm the music.

Rosini, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, "Contro un cor che accende amore." Again, her agile voice is well deployed. The florid singing is well done.

Donizetti, Roberto Devereaux, "Che m'apporti." Her clean, light voice matches well with this aria. Smoothly sung. Her "Quel sangue versato al cielo s'innalza," which follows, is well done. High notes cleanly hit, a smooth line.

Verdi, La Traviata, "E strano. . . .Sempre libera." Again, what agility! In "Sempre libera," she reveals a rich voice and, again, wonderful agility. This is an animated version of one of Verdi's showcase pieces.

Lehar, Giudetta. "Meine Lippen." A lot of fun! This is smoothly sung.

In the final analysis, this is a nice potpourri of Beverly Sills' repertoire. Those not familiar with her work will find this a nice entree to her oeuvre; those familiar with her will find this a good compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Sills fits my bill.......2006-03-13

This recording is another in an all too small CD collection of Sills recordings. I eagerly await more.

5 out of 5 stars The Great American Soprano.......2005-10-01

This is a great collecition featuring arias from the Classical and Romantic periods. Fabulous!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Woman.......2005-08-05

I would have to say that when I first heard Beverly Sills sing, I was entranced. I couldn't take my eyes off of her and I became angry at any rustling around me, because I was afraid I would miss one note. It was so addictive....that is what she is....addictive! A c.d. will never properly capture her style. She is an amazing leader in opera, taking it into a new frontier and I believe this c.d. showcases that.

"America's First Tribal Love-Rock Musical," went the advertising, and nobody could argue with that. Hair opened on Broadway in 1968 and immediately became a smash, although no one could quite discern what it was about. Something like, "War is bad, drugs are good, racism bites the big one, and nudity is nice." Although all these sentiments are expressed on this album which, like the show, has not dated well, the quality of the music makes it forgiveable. The songs weren't really rock, but they accomplished what all good pop songs set out to do; stick in the craw. In fact, several of its tracks later became hits for pop acts, including "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" (The Fifth Dimension), "Hair" (The Cowsills), and "Good Morning Starshine" (Oliver). --Dawn Eden

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack.......2007-07-03

While I will admit that I don't think that Hair will stand up as long as the Soundtrack to 'Rent' will, I do think that this is an amazing and brilliant collections of songs of a specific time that has little if no meaning for somebody like me who was born in the 1970s.

5 out of 5 stars Hair the musical - orignal cast.......2007-06-27

Ah those were the days, marching on Washington, geting gassed, and gettig really fed up with it all And Hair recalls those time perfectly. The music and the philosophy fit perfectly. The cast is talented, the music is edgy and the lisening experience is not only very enjoyable but thought provking in light of today's unpopular war. Listen and love and learn. Peace

2 out of 5 stars Volume pathetically low.......2007-06-19

I had to rip the tracks to my HDD, then raise the volume and burn it back to a CDR. Poor quality for a commercial CD!

4 out of 5 stars nostalgia.......2007-04-15

This is a fun CD of the original broadway production of HAIR. The only thing I didn't like were the extra songs they've included. Oddly enough, I felt that they distracted from the original coherence of the piece. But, anyway, it is a very enjoyable CD

5 out of 5 stars Can't beat the original.......2007-01-25

I was really glad to find this. We already have the cd from the movie but this is 100 times better.

Like the Black Crowes themselves, the greatest-hits collection A Tribute to a Work in Progress hearkens back to the good old days of best-of collections: you get a bunch of songs you've probably heard on the radio a million times and that's it. These are arguably the group's best songs, but there are no unreleased outtakes or remixes to force rabid collectors to purchase the disc for the sake of two songs. This straightforward document of a straightforward band is also the best entryway to the group's fabulous, swaggering, ballsy, bluesy rock & roll--that is, next to their 1992 breakthrough, Southern Harmony & Musical Companion. While arranged chronologically, what one hears here is the Atlanta-based group playing great, unpretentious Stones-, Faces-, and Zep-influenced rock. This music was made for pure, visceral enjoyment, so play it really loud and dance around. --Mike McGonigal

I purchased this CD on Feb 5, was supposed to receive by Feb 8. Unfortunately, the delivery system is definitly not as good as the cd. I finally received it March 1st. It was well worth the wait and aggravation of calling a few times to find out where it was. I can say I like every single song on the cd. Usually, I skip ahead to this song or that one. No need to here. Great songs, great cd....have to admit great price, just really lousy shipping. Better luck with that part next time.

Album Description

Out of print in the U.S.! Johnny Cash had already recorded some of the most important Country albums in the history of the genre, yet, although he was still making quality music throughout the '80s, record sales and label support were the lowest he'd ever experienced in his entire career. By the early '90s, he was without a label for the first time in four decades. Longtime fan, label owner and producer Rick Rubin stepped in, asked Johnny to return to his roots and together, they re-created the legend of the Man In Black. Features Cash performing his own compositions as well as songs from Loudon Wainwright, Leonard Cohen, Nick Lowe, Tom Waits and Glenn Danzig. American Recordings earned Johnny a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. A stunning return to form. Warner.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Cash does it again, and again and again..........2007-06-26

I suppose there is no need to write another review for a disc originally released over 13 years ago. Considering there have been over 90 reviews of this, the first American Recordings collaboration between Rubin and Cash, it seems a waste of time to write another.

With this in mind, much like the minimalist approach to this album, I will do the same with this review. This is simply among the very best albums of any genre, any era since the birth of rock and roll. Nowhere can you find a combination of haunting lyrics with a voice to match and a producer willing to keep his fingers off the controls.

It doesn't matter if you are a punk, emo, stoner, hippie, country fan, metalhead, death metal freak or a soccer mom. This is one of the few pieces of American music that can stand the test of time and truly reach any audience. Get this record!!!

5 out of 5 stars Of course........2007-06-22

It's Johnny Cash, of course it gets 5 stars. Great collection from the Mater.

5 out of 5 stars The Master's Comeback.......2007-05-14

This was the Man in Black's comeback album and it showed the world he was not done yet by a long shot. It introduced a whole new generation to his style of and method of music, and also got that new generation to discover his older works. No Cash collection is complete without this album.

5 out of 5 stars classic americana........2007-04-10

1994, the start of something great: johnny cash's association with producer rick rubin. "american recordings," the 1st album in an amazing series is a masterpiece. just mr cash's stunning voice accompanied by a lone acoustic guitar. stark and beautiful, through and through. though mr cash has always been associated with country and western music (at least in my mind), this is american folk music, at a pinnacle of quality seldom grasped. things start off with a sunny little murder ballad, "delia's gone." she was a low-down trifling gal, so she had to die. and most of the songs that follow plumb the depths and explore the wreckage of america's dark-side. the dark parts of a man's soul. "the beast in me," is a bare, no frills tune about the singer's bad side. mr cash sings hauntingly and beautifully over a simple pattern of softly plucked notes on the guitar. it's one of this great albums many highlights. "drive on," is a fantastic vietnam veteran song, and is another highlight. the tim hardin classic, "bird on a wire," has never been better done than here. not to my knowledge. things begin to lighten a bit with track nine, a humorous live recording about some courtship and love, circa 1825, with a happy ending. the closing song is also a live track, "the man who couldn't cry," and another stab at humor that works very fine. this whole album is just a stunning piece of work. one of the best folk albums that i've ever heard. i rank it up there with my very favorite folk recording: jody stecher's "oh the wind and rain." these are both albums that no american music lover should miss. and life is fragile. who knows? an asteroid might hit the earth at any moment. i hear that we're due for such a thing. so get this music quick. don't die without having had the experience of hearing this.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2006-10-15

I love Johnny Cash, I love every edition of the American Recordings series, but this is the weakest of the series. Don't get me wrong, this is a good CD, I enjoy every minute of it, but if your're a Cash rookie, get the Essential Johnny Cash, this is for hardcore Cash fans like myself, but the Essential is awesome as well. For Classic Cash fans get the Man Comes Around before you get this. The first American Recordings, this one, good but not great.

At its best, listening to the Jayhawks make music is a beautiful American experience falling somewhere between drinking a cold Coke on a hot day and driving through the Rocky Mountains at sunset. Perhaps it's in the clarity of Mark Olson's tenor melodies and their accompanying ghostly harmonies, or maybe it's in Gary Louris's immensely raved-up country rock licks. Or perhaps it's the impression left by lyrics that never reveal the whole story but tell just enough to tear at you and make you understand their feeling--the loneliness, the sorrow, the hope, or the peace.

The Jayhawks were at their very best indeed on 1992's Hollywood Town Hall. Their guitars were sharp, the words perfect, and the melodies unforgettable. With Tomorrow the Green Grass, however, 1994's version of the great country soul group is decidedly less filling, even when still savory. The addition of violins is a nice touch, but a misstep where the music's muscle is concerned. The guitars are still gorgeous, but muddier and less hook-laden than before. The lyrics still haunt, but they're more disjointed and less gripping this time around. And the melodies are both a blessing and a curse: more easily catching and chart-ready but with a lot less meat on their bones. Call it cosmic American music in the sugary Milky Way galaxy. Or else just remember how much Gram Parsons always did look sort of like David Cassidy. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars How to find the title track.......2007-06-05

The band's talent is shown in how they've alway understated their ambitions. Except in the song 'Blue' where they literally explode a melody that blooms like a flower, they always have a very pleasant sound that is as easy-going as an afternoon sipping lemonade on the porch while the hot summer sun keeps you in the shade. I know my kids will love it later, they hate it now, but they still get to hear it...
The title song "Tommorrow The Green Grass" could have fit nicely amongst the tracks on the album that bears its name, but you have to buy "National Lampoon's Senior Trip" Soundtrack CD to get that song, so you can add it to your ipod and make it part of the Jayhawks album like it should have been, along with 'Darling Today' from another soundtrack "Blown Away".
That said, this album is definitely the pinnacle, and the sad exit point for Mark Olson--but he and Gary have a duet album as well as individual solo albums coming out in 2007 and into winter 2007-08 so stay tuned.

4 out of 5 stars The Jayhawks - Contains Their Best Song "Blue".......2007-06-04

If I remember correctly I first came to notice the Jayhawks after hearing the single from this album, the opening track "Blue". It is still a favorite of mine and one of the best songs this band has ever done. Most Jayhawks fans tend to rate "Hollywood Town Hall" over this album, but for me I think I like this one a bit better. The music is still roots rock Americana with maybe a bit more country influence this time around. Along with "Blue" other highlights include, "I'd Run Away", "Miss Williams Guitar", "Nothing Left To Borrow", "Ann Jane" and the album closer "10 Little Kids". Jayhawks albums never blow me away, but I do like them for what they are. This is another strong effort if you are a fan of this genre of American music.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Jayhawks.......2007-03-20

Sweetly chagrined rock and romantically whimsical alt, the Jayhawks finest CD.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2007-01-23

in 10+ years since hearing a couple of fine tracks off the Jayhawks 'Tomorrow the Green Grass' upon its release in '96, i realised i never got around to buying it (now a v. difficult opus to track down here in Australia). Since it arrived the other day from US (via Amazon) i haven't stopped playing it, & the tunes have stuck in my head since. Not merely a 'country' tinged album, the songs hold more to their basis than first appears, as do their musical arrangements. It has easily withstood the test of time hearing it again now...what some may term classic...but i simply term, damn fine!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greats.......2007-06-09

Truly Five stars here, probably the Black Crowes' best album. Each song is a masterpiece, wonderfully written and produced. I'd buy it just on the strength of "Remedy" or "Sometimes Salvation," two of the most wonderfully- crafted rock songs you'll hear. But you also get five or six other classics thrown on top here.
"Sting Me," "Thorn In My Pride," "Bad Luck Blue Eyes," and "Hotel Illness" are all instant classics, and there isn't a dull moment on the whole recording.
A kind of breathtaking record, actually. Any gritty rock and roll fan will eat it up. It's on par with Exile on Main St or Physical Graffiti!

5 out of 5 stars LORD OF MERCY!!!.......2007-04-05

Ok. So now Captain & Tennille don't make it as cutting edge rock and roll anymore. Ditto Olivia Newton John. Time for all you Yankees to get some sense and rinse the muck out of your ears. The South gave America jazz, gospel and rock and roll. This little album here just crawls with gators and kudzu. It tastes New Orleans. Burns like Atlanta. And it breathes clean like the Smoky Mountains.

Think your little piss-ant weinie art rock collection is so golden? Nothing but a Shirley Temple to this tumbler of Jack. Time to rock like a man on heavy testosterone. Time for women to strut a like an estrogen marinated Venus.

Guys, put on your dancin' shoes. Ladies, put that blue dress on. South is gonna rise again. Stand back and prepare to be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

5 out of 5 stars THE BLACK CROWES' ANTICIPATING FOLLOW-UP TO $HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER........2007-02-13

I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION" by one of Rock's greatest bands. I give you one of America's favorite sons and one of Georgia's pride and joy's, THE BLACK CROWES. This album was originally released in 1992 on Compact Disc on the Def American Recordings records label in association with Angelus Entertainment. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

During this period, THE BLACK CROWES were on a roll. The band was celebrating their newfound fame and fortune as a result of their extremely successful debut album "$HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER" from 1990. Their popularity was forever growing tremendously as a result of their growing fanbase and following resulting in sold out concerts everywhere they performed. The band was definitely enjoying the fruits to its fullest excesses that the good life has to offer. According to the Rock critics, lead vocalist and frontman Chris Robinson was being labeled as one of Rock's newest sex symbol's. Having accomplished all of these tasks, it was now time for THE BLACK CROWES or should I say, lead vocalist and frontman Chris Robinson, his brother lead guitarist Rich Robinson, bassist Johnny Colt, drummer Steve Gorman, lead and rhythm guitarist Marc Ford and keyboardist and piano Ed Hawrysch to head back into the recording studio and record the follow-up to their extremely successful debut album $HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER." As a result, after a certain period of time passed, THE BLACK CROWES would complete and hand in to their record label Def American Recordings records, "THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION." In my opinion, "THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION" is a well recorded and balanced album. And yes, this album does kick a*s.

All I will say is if you really want to get down and Rock to the music of this album, listen to the Rockers such as "Sting Me," the breathtaking "Remedy," the soulful "Thorn In My Pride," the blistering "Black Moon Creeping," the killer "No Speak No Have" and the funkish "My Morning Song."

If you like Blues Rock ballads, listen to the songs "Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye," "Sometimes Salvation" and "Time Will Tell."

This album does contain one Country Rock song called "Hotel Illness," this song sounds really good.

Overall, this is one hell of an album worth seeking out and checking into.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.

In closing, with the success of their follow-up album "THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION," THE BLACK CROWES would continue on the path to further fame and fortune. The band's continued sell out's of all their concerts is an indication that THE BLACK CROWES are here to stay. With this in mind, THE BLACK CROWES legend does not even come close to ending here. There will be new stories that would need to be conquered, told and written in pages and chapters about their glorious career. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will have to stay tuned and read more about at a later time. So here's to you Chris, Rich, Johnny, Steve, Marc and Ed. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Keep On Rockin'. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BLACK CROWES RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Crowes Album!.......2007-01-14

There is literally not a single dull moment on this album! I can put this cd on play and just let the entire thing play. This album has it all; excellent vocals, great(alternately tuned) guitar work, fast songs, slow songs, and so much more! Not to be missed is an EXCELLENT cover of Bob Marley's "Time Will Tell" to close out the cd. All the other songs must be heard to believe how great this cd is. I used to think (and I think the majority of people still do) that the Crowes' debut "Shake Your Moneymaker" was better than this one. It took many years of listening to both albums for me to realize that this one had the slight edge over that one. "Sting Me" is one of my favorite Black Crowes tunes ever. Then there is the string of softer songs in numbers 3-5. These are probably my favorite part of the album. I don't like to give an analysis on every song, but I don't feel there is a need to here. They are ALL great songs. 10 songs = 10 GREAT songs on this one! Don't miss this album if you like classy, blusey rock music. Also recommended if you like this album are any of the Black Crowes' first 5 albums, though the first 3 are the truly great ones.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best rock albums of the 90's.......2006-08-16

After the Black Crowes received mainstream success with their debut, "Shake your Moneymaker", the boys come out with a powerful blend of soulful rock. They also brought in highly skilled lead guitarist Marc Ford who sprinkles his guitar soloing magic all over these tracks. The brothers Robinson have also wrote a great bunch of songs from straight ahead rockers (sting me, remedy, my morning song, no speak no slave, and hotel illness) to two of their greatest ballads (thorn in my pride, and bad luck blue eyes goodbye). Throughout the album both Rich Robinson and Marc Ford show tremendous chemistry playing together, feeding off one another's playing they deliver an album jam packed for guitarist. Chris Robinson is not to outdone by singing some of the most heartfelt and soulful lyrics in the Crowes catalog. Steve Gorman pounds the drums like a man possesed reminicent of John Bonham. The Crowes decide to end the album with the only cover the band has ever recorded on a studio release. "Time will tell" was penned by Rita Marley (wife of legend Bob Marley), it's an acoustic jam that gives this album a soulful closer after rocking hard on the previous songs. This truly is one of the best albums to come along in the 90's. The Black Crowes are one of the few things still right in rock and roll, and it's never been more evident than on this album. Very highly recommended.

Amazon.com essential recording

The Jayhawks' breakthrough album is a roots rock classic. "Like folk music, but really loud," is how guitarist Gary Louris liked to describe the Jayhawks, but the reality is more complex--try the country-rock sound of the Flying Burrito Brothers, Neil Young, or the Band married to white-boy soul, bar band rawness, and a slight alternative edge. Hollywood Town Hall is a masterpiece of American songwriting, blending irresistible melodies, ringing guitars, and Louris and Olson's gorgeous harmonies with moody, imagery-rich lyrics. Best cuts: "Waiting for the Sun," "Take Me with You (When You Go)."

Amazon.com

Because the Jayhawks' lyrics are more interested in expressing a mournful mood than in evoking any specific emotion, and since their strengths are searing guitar solos and cathartic, Gram Parsons-influenced harmonies, it makes sense their best album would come when they teamed with a producer (George Drakoulias) who could make all that sorrowful noise come to life. Hollywood Town Hall is such a sonic marvel, in fact, that even the new version of the beautiful, if vague, "Two Angels" (repeated from their earlier album Blue Earth) sounds less a retread than a revelation. Though still obscure, like everything here it sounds breathtaking. --David Cantwell

3 out of 5 stars The Jayhawks - Pleasent Americana Roots Rock.......2007-06-04

I don't really remember how I got into this band since it is not really the type of stuff that I normally listen too, but somewhere along the line I picked up this and another one of their albums and still enjoy them quite a bit. I guess I would categorize the Jayhawks as American roots rock. There are elements of folk, country, and rock to be found in their material along with tight vocal harmonies the occasional blistering guitar solo. They are not a band that blew me away upon first listen, but over time I grew to enjoy what they do. Highlights of the disc include "Waiting For The Sun", "Two Angels", "Take Me With You When You Go", and "Nevada California". This is not an album I pull out often, and I have to be in the right mood, but I do enjoy it when I give it an occasional listen.

5 out of 5 stars One of my few favorites..........2006-12-22

This is my favorite record of all time. It's like a story that takes you from chapter to chapter with such amazing songstyling and vocal harmonies, All I really want to say about it, is that you are really missing out if you do not experience Hollywood Town Hall. The stuff that they do now is also very good, but here you have them in their heyday with both Olson and Louris bouncing harmonies off eachother - amazingly beautiful. They Jays also defy being labeled, so in order to explain them to my friends, I say that they are like alt.country + roots rock + power pop + a little bluegrass and a little honkytonk thrown in there too. While still being dynamically beautiful. Just listen to it even though I sound like a raving lunatic, we give the best reccomendations anyhow.

4 out of 5 stars the jayhawks are a great band.......2006-02-28

it says it right on the the sticker they put on the cd "the jayhawks are an astonishingly(sp?) easy band to love." it is true. they are a great band they are my second favorite band right behind tom petty & the heartbreakers. i love this cd it is not their best(tomorrow the green grass and rainy day music are both better). but this album is still about as close to perfect as a band can get. the song "clouds" has one of my favorite opening lines of any song "the God of the rich ain't the God for the poor..." also the song "settled down like rain" is just fantastic and is probably my favorite song of all time. i am very suprised no one else has mentioned this song. they tend to single out "take me with you(when you go)", "waiting for the sun", and "nevada, california" which are all great songs but still not as good as "settled..." basically this album is great and i can't imagine anybody not enjoying it. it is a classic one of the best albums i own.

5 out of 5 stars On of the Top 10 albums of all time........2005-07-31

My favorite album. Every song is perfect and listening to it always takes me back to the days when nothing really mattered but the music.

5 out of 5 stars Drive and listen.......2005-07-19

The first few times through, this CD made little impression on me. Then, I really listened to it. I was on a road trip, it was a CD I picked up on the way out the door, but it and Buddy Miller's _Universal United House of Prayer_ were the only ones I played. And both were worth the time and attention. At least one of these cuts--"Nevada, California," "Waiting for the Sun," or my favorite, "Crowded in the Wings"--will eventually get to you and draw you in. It might take a rainy-day road trip to set the mood, but the Jayhawks will eventually make you glad you listened.

4 out of 5 stars A must own.......2007-07-18

This album is a truly great display of musical talents. The bluesy I'm the One demonstrates the talents of Mr. Danzig's vocal abilities. Long Way Back from Hell is a classic Danzig metal song. While the pounding beat of Girl is one for the ages.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful showcase for Glenn Danzig's incredible voice.......2007-04-03

This CD has been one of my favorites for 17 years, ever since it came out. It was my first exposure to Danzig... despite being a fan of the Misfits before finding this disc, I somehow missed the first Danzig disc. The sound of Danzig the band and of Glenn Danzig's haunting, gorgeous voice are at their best on this CD. I think this is the absolute best Danzig album, with their first release as a close second.

5 out of 5 stars great second album.......2007-02-18

This album was released in 1990. This was before anyone on MTV even knew who Danzig was. It's a real shame because this album was as good, if not better than anything that were playing at that time.

These songs are a bit different than the first self titled album, but are still filled with darkness and shadows. Again, these are 11 great songs in perfect sequence. The first three songs on this album are all merged together which makes it even better to listen to. It's too bad the entire album was not presented this way. The songs here are performed a bit different, adding alot of acoustic blues (I'm The One is the best example) 777 is also a great song that moves back and forth between acoustic chords and heavy guitar. Blood And Tears is a nice ballad that is further explored on later albums with songs like 'Sistanas', 'Dominion' and 'Ashes'

Her Black Wings further explores the female goth angel that started with She Rides and appeared in many later songs. Girl is a great heavy song that starts with some nice deep power chords. Pain In The World is a great closer for this album that mixes all the best elements of light and heavy.

The video for this album, which has yet to see DVD release is also worth checking out. It's a great accompaniment to this CD and filled with dark yet compelling images. So check out this CD and the video if you can find it. This is yet another 5 star album.

5 out of 5 stars you know what..........2007-01-29

I think this is some excellent stuff here. I completely agree with the reviewer that said if Jim Morrison and the devil collaborated this is what it would be, because this is exactly what it sounds like. Dark, poetic lyrics with a morrison-esque voice.

I was interested in Danzig because I remember Lacuna Coil saying they were going on tour with him and they called him a metal legend, etc. and I had never heard of them. Tried seeing if he had a myspace but he didn't so I could take a listen, then yesterday I was in a disc replay store and spotted this cd for 4 bucks and I was like, "what the hell? Why not?" and then popped it in and loved it. This is just good quality music that is trapped somewhere between rock and metal. MUST BUY!!!!

5 out of 5 stars better than danzig 1.......2006-12-01

this is a great listen and better than danzig's debut release in my opinion. of course i like everthing glenn danzig has released from the misfits to samhain to danzig...the man is a musical mastermind. anyways...my fav track on here is blood and tears because its alot slower than his usual stuff but still somehow pulls you in. all of the tracks have something to offer though.

From topnotch revivals come Patti LuPone's "Anything Goes," Peter Gallagher's "Luck Be a Lady," Alan Cumming's "Money," and Bebe Neuwirth's "All That Jazz." Also included are selections from newer shows Titanic and Ragtime. The collection starts to get thin when it has to hunt for available versions of classic songs, ending up with an "America" from Jerome Robbins' Broadway, "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" from the 1979 Oklahoma! revival, and an "Impossible Dream" from Colm Wilkinson's solo album--all fine recordings, but nothing that could be considered a first choice. And of course there are many omissions, most notably the shows of Stephen Sondheim (a longtime RCA artist, even!). A follow-up, The Only Other Broadway CD You'll Ever Need, proved what everyone expected--the original's title was indeed an impossible dream. But it got your attention, didn't it? --David Horiuchi

2 out of 5 stars where is all the music.......2001-11-05

Okay all of those songs are great but I have a question. Where is Andrew LLoyd Webber on this CD? Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat, Evita and CATS? How can you manage to make a CD of Broadway with out Andrew Lloyd Webber? They need to re-do this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific, except for...........2000-01-08

The CD only had one problem. Where's Annie? It's one of the best musicals out there with some of the best songs. Where's TOMORROW or HARD KNOCK LIFE? Other than that, it's a great CD

I knew very little of the songs when I got it, and now I know them all by heart! Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Promotion for RCA Victor.......1999-10-31

This CD may not be the only Broadway CD you'll ever need because it leaves out songs from many high profile and popular musicals, but it does have a wide variety from what RCA Victor produced. It is a nice CD with some sound choices of music ... I enjoy listening to it.
