4 out of 5 stars The best of Eddie Arnold.......2004-10-09

My voice and Eddie's were very close to being duplicate of one another in the 60's - 70's. I lost my voice box to cancer in 1999 and use a prosthetic device to speak. I have friends that invent new products every day for the speech impared. I plan to obtain one of Eddie Arnolds records, take the voice monulation on an osccilliscope etc., and the company that produces electric larynx devices, will be challeged to duplicate my voice on an electrical chip or in this case Eddie's voice.

I am Don Layton (66)President Inland Empire Nu Voices Association, a Head and Neck Cancer outreach Organization working with the American Cancer Society. Thank You.

2 out of 5 stars nice songs but songs are all mono.......2004-03-05

was disapointed in disk...played it and was all in mono

5 out of 5 stars This was a long time comin!.......2004-01-04

Remember a few years ago when the only thing available on Eddy Arnold was remakes of his early hits.

Well this is one of the most welcome releases ever. 25 original recordings from 44-49. Let me say that again "ORIGINAL RECORDINGS." You get the original recording of "Cattle Call" not the 1959 version or the 1954 version(although that is my all time favorite).

The booklet is awesome and the songs have recording dates and chart info.

Once again my only complaint is the uuuuuuggglyyyy ASV design.

5 out of 5 stars 25 of Eddy's best songs from early in his career.......2003-02-03

For those who can't afford the Bear Family boxed set of all of this material and more, this 25 track compilation from the great folks at ASV should suffice and the 25 tracks actually are the biggest hits from early in his career including the classics Take Me In Your Arms and Hold Me, the original Cattle Call (actually a 1955 remake was the hit but here you get THE original recording and yes, he can yodel very well), Bouquet of Roses, Texarkana Baby, Anytime, Just a Little Lovin', It's a Sin, That's How Much I Love You and many others. The previous critic is right that the sound quality is great throughout the compilation and the music is essential.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Eddy Arnold Listening.......2000-05-26

I must admit that I am not a fan of country music. However, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Eddy Arnold. His best recordings have always been his earliest, and this masterpiece of a CD goes all the way back to 1946.

The sound is prestine on all of the recordings. A highpoint for me was hearing "Cattle Call". Eddy sure could yodel too! He recently redid that recording with overrated LeAnn Rimes. As I said, all of his early hits are here. I highly recommend this CD, and you will not be disappointed. After listening to this early Eddy Arnold, you'll wonder how Rimes,Shania Twain, and Randy Travis could even have made it in this business...

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Kopeck has a point, but consider this...........2007-02-21

Be aware that copyrights for sound recordings expire in Europe after 50 years. So, companies like Proper (and ASV, Jasmine, Document, and dozens of others) pay no artist or label royalties. Proper could have quite literally gone out, bought the Bear Family box, reconfigured it, and released it as their own.

That doesn't mean they did, and it doesn't mean their box isn't a labor of love - they seem to really care about the music they release. But, no one's getting paid except Proper - not RCA, not Eddy Arnold, or not (eventually) his estate. FYI.

5 out of 5 stars Shop Around.......2005-11-01

Everything that the Bear Family does is "First Class" and I own many of their Box Sets but for 1/5 of the price of this set you can purchase Proper Records 4 CD Box Set "Eddy's Song" with 90 tracks from 1944-1952 many being the same songs as this set for a lot less ($25.00).This Bear Family set does have more songs and even though I never heard theirs I know from experince that its Tops but this set also has excellent sound, pretty good liner notes and is well packaged (the small 5" by5.5" box instead of the 12" box that Bear packs them in, another plus for the bigger Bear Liner Book). The choice is yours.
Either way you will "Enjoy", Joe Kopeck,Shanty Town

5 out of 5 stars Hillbilly heaven...!! Eddy Arnold's early years.......2004-03-12

A stunning 5-CD collection of all of Arnold's earliest material, and one of the Bear Family boxes I've heard that best stands up to intensive and repeated listens. A treasure trove of old-fashioned sentimental county songs, packed with songs about little kids, lost loves, and sweet, saintly mothers, this is without doubt the definitive look at his early career, superseding the more humble (but no less enjoyable) single-disc collections that cover the same era.

In the mid 1950s, Arnold, along with singers like Jime Reeves, Ferlin Husky and Marty Robbins, unreservedly adopted the new "Nashville Sound," the country-pop accommodation that Music City saw as its only hope to survive the commercial onslaught of the early rock'n'rollers. In some ways, his switch to a pop vocals wasn't that big a deal: Arnold was always a slow paced, sentimental crooner, by going pop he was just shedding the modest fiddle and pedal steel licks that buoyed his old records, and toning down the twang. He also revisited several of his older hits -- "Anytime," "Bouquet Of Roses," "Cattle Call" -- and gave them a grander-sounding orchestral sweep. It's fun to hear them here in their original stripped-down glory, but sweeter still to hear all the less well-known gems that came out at the same time, in all their unabashed, corny glory. There are also songs that he re-recorded within the space of a couple of years, such as "Little Angel With The Dirty Face" and "This Is The Thanks I Get (For Loving You)," which reveal Arnold already trying out a more robust baritone style, and experimenting with various musical arrangements. His understated delivery and richly sentimental, varied material all make for some mighty fine listening. Trust me: I, too, was leery of investing the big bucks to hear "too much" of such a sappy singer's work, but was VERY pleasantly surprised at how well this collection held up to repeat listens. Nice stuff!
