Great sound and great song!.......2007-05-19
Along with the Good Vibrations are my favorites.......2007-05-15
"You are the new day" is my personal favorite song.
My dad loves it.......2007-02-13
Great Album!.......2006-04-22
I can say that their sound is better than a mixed choir because even though the King's Singers is only composed of 6 members. Their sound volume can beat a 30 member choir due to the quality of their voice.
My favorite is "It Was Almost Like A Song" because of the countertenor's very light voice. The baritone part was also awesome as he dominated the scene when he took the melody.
Overall, great album. This has to be one of the King's Singers best albums released. All songs are great that you can't resist missing a moment on listening it.
Beautiful singing; clever arrangements.......2002-06-14
"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."
The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.
Highly recommended.

The Best Performance Available.......2005-07-29
Such powerful emotions gave Prokofiev a great opportunity to write expressive music and he reflects the emotions of his characters marvelously. The orchestra provides musical commentary on the characters as well as setting the mood for the action; the music is highly expressive. Later, Prokofiev was to create his orchestra suite Four Portraits from the Gambler from the music of the opera. The denouement of the opera comes when Babulenka arrives at Roulettenburg and proceeds to loose her entire fortune. To say Paulina, Alexsey heads for the gambling tables and breaks the bank. He brings this fortune to Paulina who spurns him and gives herself over to the Marquis. The Four Acts of the Opera are neatly compact with music that is very expressive of the action. I was lucky enough to see a production by Lyric Opera (conducted by Bruno Bartoletti) and was entranced by the flow of the action and how descriptive the orchestra is with the story. It is as if the orchestra is telling the story in music.
This recording has a strong cast headed by Vladimir Galuzin as Alexsey and Sergei Alexashkin as the General. Liubov Kazarnoskaya is a splendid Paulina and Elena Obraztsova is a perfect Babulenka whose voice commands attention as she issues orders to one and all. Valery Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra are wonderful in bringing Prokofiev's score to life, particularly in the impending doom of the Fourth Act. This recording is certainly the best that is available and anyone with an interest in Russian opera will want a copy.
Amazing Gergiev does it again!.......2005-06-03
What great orchestra of the Kirov!
And Prokofiev is vitage in this opera.
I wish Philips would put out more of this.

One of Kenny's Best!.......2005-01-28
If you've never bought a Kenny album...this is the one!.......2001-09-19
than any other helped to make Kenny Rogers a household name. The
cover of the CD inspired Kenny's longtime manager Ken Kragen to
strike up a deal with CBS-TV for a movie of the week, which was
the highest rated movie on television in 1980,and also led to
several sequels. Dreamcatcher,Kenny's label is in the process of
re-releasing several of his classic 70s and 80s albums...and this
is a great place to start. For one,if you have dismissed Kenny as
nothing more than a Pop singer who had success as a Country act,
this might enlighten you!
Rather,this is,in my opinion Rogers's second best CD ever,the
best being the long out-of-print EYES THAT SEE IN THE DARK,and
features in addition to "The Gambler" and "She Believes In Me",
possibly the best song Rogers ever cut,"King Of Oak Street".It's
a little long ( 5:03 ),but one of his all-time best. If you have
never heard Kenny's version of "I Wish That I Could Hurt That Way
Again"...you need to...Keep em'coming,Dreamcatcher!

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-04-16
The Feast was celebrated in many different ways. This recording of parts of a typical Feast of Fools is based on two medieval MSS containing chants 'proper' to the Mass.
The music is performed by 6 very excellent soloists: C.Bott,T. Bonner (sopranos)-J.M.Ainsley (tenor)-M. George, S. Charlesworth (baritones) and S. Grant (bass). There is a small chorus who does a fabulous job of changing their vocal tone qualities to suit the many different 'moods' of the varied selection: some outright imitation of the soloist, some VERY serious and some quite humourous. The New London Consort with its period instruments make the perfect accompaniment (when needed ) for this rendition. I must say that although this is very well done, I find it somewhat offensive to hear; only because it is making a mockery of the religious ceremonies of the church. BUT having said this, it's quite entertaining and I DO listen to it from time to time. If you like early music, this is worth the listening.

Sergei Prokofiev, Enfant Terrible (1891-1953): A 50th Anniversary Celebration

Customer Reviews:
An eye-opening Prokofiev survey (try to buy it used).......2006-03-26
As I listened straight through, I was surprised at how unacquainted I actually was with the wide extent of Prokofiev's style. From the very early "Dreams," which could be mistaken for Glazunov through the unfamiliar operas (Betrothal in a Monastery Garden, Semyon Kotko) to the final, sadly diminished works like the Seventh Sym. and the cello concerto, the composer covered every major Russian style of the century. I didn't find any new masterful performances--not that a short excerpt is a good enough trial--but everything here is well performced. Any listener should find something unexpected and intriguing in this two-and-a-half-hour traversal.
