4 out of 5 stars Moon Revised.......2007-02-20

It had been years since I had heard these songs. Once you hear them you relive all the good times they brought. If you like old music and piano played to the fullest you will love this cd.

4 out of 5 stars moon the legend.......2007-01-27

Well, this disc is a pretty good collection of moon's material. If you are an audiophile you will be let down by the hiss and pops (obviously 45's that were recorded into a digital format) as well as volume changes throughout the disc. BUT, if you are a fan of moon you don't expect hifi recordings. This package has some of moon's hottest tracks (though I wouldn't go so far as to say that all 22 are great hits). Maybe I am biased as moon is my (get ready for this) great great great uncle.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection.......2002-06-24

As usual, this is an excellent set of music. This album includes music from both Starday and King eras and is a good overall sampler of Moon's career.

Although not as wellknown as Elvis Presley, there is no doubting the similarities between Moon and Elvis: both were very versatile singers, were regarded as the King of their chosen field, had countless imitators and derivatives and loved black music.

This CD displays Moon Mullican's unique versatility: from oldtimey country like "Wabash cannonball" to a raunchy cover of Roy Brown's "Grandpa stole my baby" to ragtimey tracks like "Ragged but right" And "Magnolia rag" to originals like "Trifling woman blues", "Pipeliner blues" & "What have I done", Moon [to forgive the pun] shines throughout. No matter what the genre, he sings and plays with equal enthusiasm and ability and can effortlessly switch from one to the other at will.

5 out of 5 stars This is where R&B, blues, country and rock met.......2004-07-08

This CD is both a must for longterm Moon Mullican fans like myself and beginners. It also is a history lesson in origins of rock 'n' roll. Tracks like "Grandpa stole my baby", a cover of a Roy Brown jump blues, sound exactly like the type of music Elvis would do in 1956 on RCA (Elvis even backed his vocals with piano like Moon does here on some 1956 tracks!), while "7 nights to rock" and "I'm mad with you" show us Moon's answer to rock's arrival in 1956 itself.

An obvious inspiration to Jerry Lee Lewis, Moon (like Jerry Lee) was a singer/pianist who was comfortable with all aspects of roots music. Rock fans will love the above mentioned tracks and note Moon's position in the music world as a founder of rock 'n' roll - but, that alone doesn't do justice to him.

Country fans will go for tracks like the excellent "Crippled for life" (which inspired "Long black limousine", which is in effect the answer song to this 1954 classic by Moon), while "So long" mixes jazz, blues and bluegrass all in one. Moon also co-wrote "Jambalaya" with Hank Williams, and Moon's terrific version is here. Another great cajun-style song, "Hey Shah" (albeit with more Iranian than Cajun French lyrics!!) is also featured.

Swing and oldtime pop were among the best styles Moon sang, and "Maybe it's all for the best", "If you don't want no more of my loving", "Sugar beet" and "Think it over" all feature Moon's best jazz-swing vocal and piano stylings. "Too many irons in the fire" mixes swing and country at will.

The alternate takes of "Wanted" and "Without a port of love" are obviously not as polished as the master takes I own on other albums, but are still great to hear. However, the more polished version of "Wanted" is not yet on CD. The alt takes feature more bluesy, impassioned singing, though (but are in no way commercial like the master takes).

"Keep a light in the window for me" and "You don't have to be a baby to cry" feature some excellent vocalizing, that pointed towards the styles of Jerry Lee and Jim Reeves. Moon even manages to breath new life into the calypso novelty standard "Honolulu rocka rolla" and the rather silly country standard "Jose the Mexican boy".

What I can never understand, though, is why much of this material was not on CD already. "Think it over" was completely new to me (I had most other non-CD items here on 45 RPM), and I can't see why it was not more famous as it is one of the best songs Moon ever sung and one of Moon's best performances as well.

For all the above reasons, this is one of the best CD releases of all time. Anyone who likes blues, swing, country music and 1950s rock 'n' roll should get this.

5 out of 5 stars a masterpeice........2006-01-31

disc one of this double disc set is an enhanced version of the recording "in a new age", which was recorded on march 2nd, 1988. the original recording featured mickey, violinist marie rhines, and some bass accompanyment by edgar meyer. that recording was released on the ill-fated airborne record label.
the story of how this recording came to be started because some nashville producer wanted to take some new recordings of mickey's and release them in some fashion. that fashion featured "new age" arrangements that mickey objected to. The initial sessions started in 1982, and featured a different vocal performance. some copies (vinyl, cassette, and compact disc) were released in canada as "in a new age" (note..on the cd copy, one will not know if they have a "canadian" version until they look at the actual disc. on the disc it is printed "a legend in a new age" instead of "in a new age"..also..on the back of the cover tray, the track names and order are in a "block" font/format..you will also notice on the very bottom that the printing was done in canada..if your copy features what i have just described, you have the canadian version..this is sort of a "butcher cover" collectible for newbury and audiophites alike). as a result of mickey's disapproval, mickey decided to re-record the same compositions in the same order.
he went into a nashville studio with marie rhines on march 2, 1988 and recorded the songs live, without any overdubs. the songs were recorded in one take, with only a coffee break dividing the session.
this recording is becoming one of my all time favorite recordings by any artist. i cannot express the music in words.
this version "it might as well be the moon" was released as a re-release, with an added bonus of a live recording of mickey and marie in san francisco shortly after the original release of "in a new age". the label that originally released "in a new age" came upon financial hardships, thus, the recording had a limited pressing. re-released ten years after the original recording, disc one features some extra percussion (note: the "newest" version does not have any percussion..a mystery that has yet to be explained..so in short.. the tally comes out to FOUR versions that have been released thus far).
both discs in this double set are wonderful, but it is the recordings done on march of 1988 that will, hopefully, take you to an aural place you have never been.
from the first strains of music that come through after the sounds of rain and ambiance, i was moved and transcended into the world and craftsmanship of one mickey newbury.
i listen to this recording on my best and worst days...passages that many know too well, and need that uplift in the form of recorded music. the material and how it is presented here, if you know a bit about mickey's trials, will make sense as a testament: an aural pictorial.
you are invited.
if you find a copy of "in a new age" (the disc)..snag it!!! Also, if you get lucky, you might stumble across the version that was ill released in canada. this may be sac-relig to write, but i am just as touched by the "canadian" version.
enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Rain and Trains.......2002-07-05

The first CD is pulled together by the gentle sound of rain and distant trains. The sound effects accent a lonesome sadness, the same mood that made Mickey Newbury distinct so many years ago. Disc 2 has equally good music, nearly twice as much as what's on Disc 1. It's recorded live before an audience and Newbury gives a short history of each song before he sings it. There's nothing lost after all these years. This is good Newbury.

5 out of 5 stars A great place to start.......2000-09-25

This dbl cd's contains a rendition of "In a new age" and a 70 minutes of live tracks cd. The sound is pristine, and many of Newbury's great songs are here. If you've never heard of Newbury, you have probably heard his songs, which have been covered more than 300 times, but his versions are the real thing. Highly spiritual, ethereal. One of the best american singer-sogwriters.

Afer you hear this set you'll want the 8 cd's boxed set, so start putting your money aside from now. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars One of the must-have CD's from Mickey.......2000-02-21

I couldn't recommend this (2)CD set more highly. If you would like Mickey's website you can contact me at: randec@earthlink.net . You're in for a treat!

4 out of 5 stars Very essential release.......2002-04-30

Once again, another cornerstone of my collection. If you are going to own one release by Moon Mullican, this needs to be it. One complaint though: The notes don't even mention the songs included. They just say "The music speaks for itself." That is inexcusable for such an important CD.

5 out of 5 stars The original crazy hillbilly at the piano.......1999-12-11

Moon Mullican wrote the book for every rock & roller who ever sat at the piano and sang. The only white performer on the King R&B label, his music is unique and American.

5 out of 5 stars The First King of rock 'n' roll.......1999-06-30

Moon Mullican was the first King of rock 'n' roll and the only artist that ever lived to be the equal to Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmie Rodgers and this CD is the best to demonstrate why. "Pipeliner blues" & "What's the matter with the mill" are 2 excellent examples of Moon's blues, while his hit,"I'll sail my ship alone" is one of the most touching country songs ever."Rocket to the moon","I done it" & "Rheumatism boogie" are exactly the kind of blues that would be called rock 'n' roll in the '50s. The music on this CD demonstrates possibly the best of Moon's work - which has always been excellent and consistant and this is an ideal introduction to his music.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The original greatest hits of Moon Mullican.......2001-10-15

This album is a reissue of the King vynil of the same name. Just as is the case with "Old Texan", the reason that this album doesn't get 5 stars is due to shortened, overdubbed tracks. "Jole blon" is overdubbed with other vocals so much it is hard to hear Moon's original vocal. The song is also shortened.

Other than that, the material is excellent. All of Moon's main country and blues hits are here: "Pipeliner blues","Cherokee boogie", "I was sorta wondering", "I'll sail my ship alone", "The leaves mustn't fall", "You don't have to be a baby to cry" & "Sweeter than the flowers" among them. Rarer tracks like the bluesy "Foggy river" or the jazzy "Sugar beet" (the only CD version of this song thus far) give the album an extra treat for fans. This is country and blues music at its best from one of the greatest most versatile singers and musicians of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Country and Hillbilly blues' most versatile artist........2000-06-14

By the time Moon Mullican started recording for Coral/Decca in 1958,the music he helped to develop - rock 'n' roll - had divorced from its maker, the blues.Moon's music on this CD sometimes have his producers trying for a Pat Boone/Buddy Holly type sound but somehow it never comes off (even on tracks like "Wedding of the bugs" or "Cush cush Cay yay") as Moon was not at all interested in or suited to pop music. He was a bluesman.

Moon's producers' attempts to make him a Bill Haley continued with tracks like "Moon's rock", which Moon delivers in a manner that demonstrates his superiority to Haley. However, the true gems in this collection are country/honky tonk ballads like "Mr Tears","Just to be with you" or "I'll pour the wine",jazzy songs like "Waiting for ships that never come in" or "I don't know why" and especially the blues (Moon's forte) "Early morning blues" and "My baby's gone",and "Pipeliner blues".

Moon's vocal versatility is to the fore here and Moon sings blues, jazz, country, hybrids and swing as they should be done.Moon is certainly arguably one of,if not the, most versatile artists to record under the country bastion. His music belongs to a time when country music was one of the most amazing and exciting genres. Also,Moon makes the boundaries and barriers between blues, jazz and country seem nonexistant.

This is one of those rare instances where I listened to a sound clip or two, then ordered the CD. Love it...the songwriting is great, and for a country CD, this album rocks! Listen to those clips and I would wager that you might feel the same way!

5 out of 5 stars Long needed reissue........2003-04-02

One of the best country pianists ever, Moon Mullican's recorded legacy has been shoddily reissued. This CD (along with volume one) helps fill the gap by presenting Mullican's King recordings in good sound and with excellent liner notes. Mullican had performed with numerous groups in Texas and Louisiana (including the Modern Mountaineers, Cliff Bruner, and Gov. Jimmie Davis), but these are the solo recordings for which he is remembered. Mullican was equally adept at playing boogie or ballads. Moon's influence is deep and has long been underestimated, he really needs full recognition as a father of rock and roll. Hopefully this reissue series will help fill the need.
