Album Description

What happens when three heavy metal musicians disconnect the power to their amps & effects units, put down the electric instruments, and pick up acoustic instruments?

You get 'Pause', the debut album from Tree of Shadows. 'Pause' is filled with both overt and subtle images, as the story of one man's quest for answers unfolds. 'Pause' combines the undertones of progressive rock and metal of such artists as Queensryche and Savatage with the grace and flow of European rock and folk styles, from Iron Maiden to Loreena McKennitt and Altan - hence: '16th Century Rock 'n' Roll'!

Continuity is established by the poetic introductions to each chapter of 'Pause'. The songs then take the story further into the listeners' consciousness to lead them on a journey of self-discovery.

Each song can either tie into each other to form a complete story or stand on its own.

4 out of 5 stars Music to play at jousting tournaments!.......2001-03-12

Tree Of Shadows classifies its music as "16th Century Rock," but I think "acoustic Renaissance folk Metal" describes their style best. Regardless of what one decides to call the band's music, it is quite original...and daring, in today's cookie-cutter, lowest-common-denominator musical climate. Rarely do I stumble upon such unique music, but when I do it is certainly cause for exhaltation. Despite being an all-acoustic, stripped-down album with little in the way of percussion or electricity, I found myself engrossed with the band's subtle instrumental melodies and lively phrasing (courtesy of guitarist Johnny Red and bassist Rome Ohnui). The inclusion of lovely female backing vocals, gloomy Shakespearian narration tracks, and the occasional flute, just adds to the eclectic nature of this recording. The band's most notable strength is the vocals of Jeff Maxwell. Maxwell's clean, melodic style brings to mind the legendary James Rivera of Helstar/Destiny's End, as well as shades of Matt Barlowe of Iced Earth. Maxwell even affects an Irish pirate brogue on "The Captain's Daughter" that would do Rock 'N Rolf of Running Wild fame proud. Quite amusing. Due to it's comedic nature, "The Captain's Daughter" is my least favourite track on the album. Oddly enough, however, it is also the most instrumentally Medieval-sounding tune. Stand-out tracks for me are "Mystery," "Dream No. 7," and "Forever And A Day," but all are worth repeated listenings. Though Tree Of Shadows is well-anchored in its folksy Medieval stylings, Heavy Metal fans are sure to find plenty to keep their interest throughout the album. Several other Metal bands have experimented with Medieval/Renaissance/Baroque music forms (Rhapsody, Blind Guardian, Corona Borealis, Hagalaz Runedance, The Soil Bleeds Black, Stille Volk, and etc.), but none have sounded as genuine or organic as Tree Of Shadows. I raise my mug of ale in salute!

4 out of 5 stars Great Renaissance folk music.......2001-03-07

I actually saw these guys perform at the Michigan Renaissance Festival in 2000. They were great! The song "The Captain's Daughter" is a riot! One slight compaint would be that the songs are somewhat redundant, but that shouldn't deter you from getting this delightful CD.
