Album Description

Though held in high esteem by '60s psych aficionados, this Houston band never met with much commercial success, only notching the #91 hit 'San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native)' in 1968. But part of the reason for that is also the reason these albums, their first two and only essential releases, are so much fun to listen to; this was a band with big ambitions, working classical and jazz influences and unusual instrumentation into the rock format well before such a thing became commonplace, pointing the way towards the prog-rock movement to come. We've added notes featuring quotes from multi-instrumentalist Rob Landes that set the scene...a Collectors' Choice Music exclusive! Includes `Imitation Situation 1 (Toccata and Fugue)/Where Do You Go?'; `San Franciscan Girls (Return of the Native)'; `Ninety-Nine and One-Half'; `Man Who Paints the Pictures'; `Filigree and Shadow'; `The Sun Also Rises'; `Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out'; `Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing'; `Unlock My Door'; `Come with Me (Rainsong)'; `Man Who Paints the Pictures II'; `What Time Did You Say It Is in Salt Lake City?'; `Don't Come Crying to Me Girl'; `Fever; Grand Candy Young Sweet'; `Jokes are for Sad People'; `I've Never Seen Evergreen'; `Peace of Mind', and `Death Is the Dancer'.

4 out of 5 stars Somewhat erratic but overall above average.......2007-07-18

I bought this due to finally figuring out who it was, playing the San Franciscan Girls tune. There are some forgettable tunes, but many others are a time passage to another era. The singer's voice is sort of grungy- I think of Eddie Vedder sometimes, and Jim Morrison other times. Unusual enunciations, yet you can understand the lyrics, not a common quality for pop singers of any era. I would say, if you have a doubt, buy it while you can.

5 out of 5 stars A fine compilation..always was, always will be!.......2007-07-17

While growing up in Houston, I had the opportunity to know these guys and hear them many times. I still have the original Fever Tree album and was very excited to find a CD was released so I can listen in my car. This is an exceptional piece of work by a band who was ahead of their time. There is nothing like the tonal quality of the instruments from the 60's and they don't disappoint on this LP. The boys are back and we'll never forget you! Check it out...you won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars My hat's off to Neil.......2007-07-07

I've always found a good way to find new music is to find out who the bands you listen to enjoy. So when I came across a reference to this band in Neil Peart's book Roadshow I decided to look them up and wound up buying the album. All I can say is "Thanks Neil!" This is a solid and thoroughly enjoyable band. While they may have not been at the forefront of the psychedelia movement they are certainly worth a listen. The material runs from bluesy guitar driven tracks to laid back piano pieces, with horns, strings, and organ adding jazz and classical touches. At his heaviest the vocalist could have fronted Deep Purple, while in his softer moments I hear a touch of Neil Diamond. Most of the material is original, but they cover the likes of Wilson Pickett and the Beatles. The end result is an album that doesn't quite make the A list, but certainly shouldn't be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars an early gem in psyc rock////.......2006-11-17

i traded for this lp when it first came out and i was hungry for the new and classy rock approaches/this filled the ticket and i listened to it over and over again/it contains variety and has a great flow/i recommend these pieces for anyone who enjoys a solid psyc approach that is very accessable and creative/i put this work up there with the first deep purple and moby grape because it is timeless, fresh and an exceptional listen even years later/i won't take this one out of the house; too precious/you might give 'bangor flying circus' a listen, as it is also a classic in my humble opinion/with the bonus of getting the second album on one cd,this is a great deal/

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD.......2007-05-12

I am so glad I found this CD. I love Deon Estez(George Michael's Bassist) and his song "Heaven Help Me" is just amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2006-06-18

I am glad that I discovered this CD, there are some truly hard to find songs on here, some that I haven't heard in close to 20 years such as Downtown, Strange But True and Sugar Free, I vaguely remember 10-9-8 as well. It's also nice to see The Honeythief and The Flame, 2 songs that I have always liked. There are a few songs on here that I have never even heard of, but there are bound to be some fans out there looking hard for these songs.

I don't quite understand why When Smokey Sings and Lay your Hands on Me are on here though, I like both of these songs quite well, but I don't think they are that hard to find, unless it's the particular versions that aren't readily available. I guess I would have rather seen other obscure songs in their place though.
But that's just a minor quibble, this is a great CD with a nice selection of tunes that really bring you back in time. I really liked the 80's, hard to believe it was so long ago.

If you are a fan of 80's music but are tired of seeing the same songs over and over on compilations, this would be a great choice.

4 out of 5 stars Unlocking The Vaults..........2006-04-09

Well, yes and no. See, some of these songs are ALREADY available on previous CD's, but several of them also 'aren't' (at least that I'm aware of). Time-Life stringed together a strong comp. here of well-known tunes (When Smokey Sings, Method Of Modern Love, Honeythief, Whirly Girl) combined with MUCH lesser-known tracks (Deeper & Deeper, No More "I Love You's" (The Lover Speaks version, that is), Lay Your Hands On Me, Out of Mind, Out of Sight), as well as totally obscure songs for the vast majority (Downtown, The Flame, Strange But True, I Can't Break Away). Good thing is, however, that even a couple of the WELL-KNOWN tracks haven't made their way to many CD comps before, if any at all. And you have this same type of random occurence on all the above-broken down groups-- some are brand new to CD (various artists comps, more specifically), while others aren't, regardless of where they fall in the 'collective conscious' level of the general public. Makes for a solid, unique assortment.

As for the tracks themselves-- well, as with all comps., some work and some don't. For my money, however, the ones that DO work are pure quality. A true treat! Method of Modern Love, When Smokey Sings, The Honeythief, Downtown, Strange But True, 10-9-8..., The Flame and the highly underrated, overlooked Deeper & Deeper keep me popping this baby into the CD player every other week. I own a few of the aforementioned on other CD's, but they mix in sturdily- even dynamically- on here.

I recommend this CD for any & all 80's music aficionados, but of course, with the added emphasis or urge on those in the constant search for the more 'remote', 'hidden' side of the decade's songs collection/vastness.

4 out of 5 stars A good album for an 80's fan..........2006-04-08

These days, it's not difficult to find music from the 1980s - there are digital music stations, FM radio stations dedicated solely to this decade, and, of course, downloads. However, there are still songs that elude a dedicated 80s fan, and this compilation is a worthy addition to one's collection. Personally, I bought this CD for Deon Estus' "Heaven Help Me", but was happy with the other songs, including Hipsway's "The Honeythief", "10-9-8" by Face to Face and "No More 'I Love You's'" by The Lover Speaks (most listeners will be familiar with Annie Lennox's version). There are songs from ABC, Hall & Oates and the Thompson Twins, as well as from more obscure acts like The Models and One 2 Many. Like the album promises, these are the hard to find songs, the ones that have been forgotten (for the most part). If you're looking for 80's pop music other than Rick Springfield, Journey or Pat Benatar, this is the collection for you!

3 out of 5 stars Another Lost Decade: The '80s Hard to Find.......2006-03-27

If you're a Prince fan, may like his CD. Most songs seem to be from the time that Prince's music and look were everywhere.
I'm lucky if I know a quarter of the songs on this CD, but lost songs aren't going to be hits.
Lost songs are about finding music that reminds you of a certain time and place. I'm not trying to find the Prince hit that reminds me of Mary Lou, I just want something that reminds me of who I was at the time.
This CD sounds more like Take Me With You Prince than Darling Nikki Prince-but any Prince is good Prince.
Yes it is, don't fight it.
Buy it, pop in it into your CD player during rush hour, and go back to the time when you thought you might just be cool enough to be a member of The Revolution.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

3 out of 5 stars Ferry's Mixed Bag.......2006-04-27

For me, Bryan Ferry's second solo album is a bit uneven in the quality of song choices. I find most of these selections rather boring, even with Ferry's unique arrangements and vocal stylings present. But though half of the CD is a little uninspired, there are five songs that make this worth purchasing. The best songs are the first and last ones. "The In Crowd" is handled perfectly with just the right amount of camp and humor. Also a bit humorous are the versions of "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" and "Fingerpoppin'". "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" is touching and lovely. Finally, the title track is one of Bryan's best original songs with its unusual time changes and catchy melody. If you dig this CD, pick up his first solo outing, "These Foolish Things".

4 out of 5 stars Odd-ball or goof-ball?.......2001-09-01

This is one heck of a strange album. I'm not really sure what to make of it, and I think that's a good thing. Sometimes, I find myself oddly moved by the songs. Ferry's quavering take on "Smoke Gets in your Eyes" IS weird, but almost definitive. It raises goosebumps. Sometime, I find myself laughing at the album. Ferry sings "What A Wonderful World" like he's mad at the song. It's not really a bad thing, but I just wonder what he was thinking or what sound he was going for. "You are My Sunshine" displays the silly-serious dichotomy within the same song: at times, it's touching, at times laughable. It seems like Ferry set out to prove that some songs are just SO good, no matter how strangely you sing them, you can't diminish thier power. That sentiment, in fact, sums up this album. Definitely odd,(even by Ferry/Roxy standards) probably goofy, but to my ear, excellent in its own idiosyncratic way. Camp and schmaltz have always been a part of the Ferry/Roxy music pantheon, and they are played to the forefront here. That said, the musicianship is fantastically professional, the arangements deep and eclectic, the recording (of course) pristine, and the title track (a Ferry original) one of the best things he's ever sung.

For extra laughs, check out the liner notes. The credit "Cover Concept By Bryan Ferry" really had me giggling. I could just imagine him saying (in... British accent) "hey guys, I'm so damn handsome, Let's just get a shot of me dressed like the Great Gatsby with a come-hither-look on my face standing in front of a swimming pool. That would make a great cover." And you know what? In a way, it did?

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, jazzy covers by a master!.......2001-07-24

"Another Time, Another Place" is an interesting selection of Ferry's unmatchable arrangements of cover tunes. My favorite piece on the album is "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," a slightly more upbeat arrangement than usually seen for the song. Other notable cuts include "Funny How Time Slips Away," done as a barrelhouse blues piece, and a jazz version of "Help Me Make It Through the Night." Fans of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music will certainly enjoy this collection.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2001-04-10

Are you kidding??!! Ferry's version of "You are my sunshine" is one of the highlights of this excellent album. The gospel choir compliments his vocals perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars Killer packs raw tenderness into these. .......2006-12-31

The Killer is My Man. Jerry Lee was a rocker when I was in highschool. When I got older I moved into classical music and opera. In the last decade I have been listening to country as well. And that's where I rediscovered the Killer. He is the Best. When he sings country standards he makes them his own, making me forget who first made the song famous. On this CD Jerry Lee puts his own stamp on two famous Merele Haggard standards, done differently but as well as Hag. Jerry Lee sings with open human abandon, which makes him so easy to love, his songs so easy to relate to. He is also a genius. When I was a girl he was thought to be too naughty, but my life experience has shown that we are on the same field, no one better than another. However, musically speaking, Jerry Lee is the Best. Listen to him and stomp and weep.

    5 out of 5 stars Killer Country.......2004-11-28

In the late 1960s Jerry Lee Lewis moved back to the music he grew up with--country music. This disc brings together 2 of his very best country albums for Smash/Mercury plus few cuts from a third. The music is fine late 1960s honky tonk style, with excellent readings of some Merle Haggard, Webb Pierce, and Jimmie Rodgers songs. Some of Lewis' finest country titles are here, including "Another Time, Another Place." I especially enjoy his performance with Linda Gail Lewis on "We Live In Two Different Worlds," simply one of the best songs Fred Rose ever wrote. Of course some rockabilly rowdiness slips in, it would not be the Killer without it. Essential country music for the true country fan.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Cd.......2004-04-28

It's Sad that "The Killer" is always over looked, but this cd makes his statement of "Elvis may be the greatest, but I'm the best." true. "There stands the glass," and "Waiting for a train." Is enough reason to buy this cd alone. The problem of why he is often overlooked may have to do with the amount of poor quality bootleg cds that bares his name. Unlike Elvis who's estate clamped down on the bootleg and poor quaility music, Jerry Lee Lewis's bootlegs are all over the place and his great studio work is hard to find. This is impart do to the many different labels that he has been signed to. I hope at some point he will get control of his music catalog and re-release his great studio work from the sun records era and those of his country recordings era, but until that happens this cd is a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Some of his best work, and thus among THE BEST.......2003-06-06

These recordings are among the most commercially successful country records ever done. Moreover, they are among the most artistically successful recordings done by anyone doing straight bar brand country music. JLL just kills these songs, he makes them all personal, he makes them all live, and makes you believe he has lived them.
Contrary to what some others say, JLL has been doing his own interpretations of the country classics since his original sun records the 1950s. His version of Crazy Arms (from 56 or 57 I believe) redefined the song. his version of You Win Again did something rare. He took a song away from Hank Williams. Today if you played or sang Hanks version of the song anywhere, it wouldnt be recognized, and wouldn't be as good as the standard way JLL does it. He did all kinds of country standards during the late 50s and early 1960s when Sun had him doing hundreds of recordings to be salted away until he made a come back.
JLL's work in the 1960s before these country recordings was not "in the wilderness." Some of the rock albums he did for Mercury Smah and Mercury represent some of the best rock and rockabilly recordings ever made, more mature musically, but wilder than things he did in the 1950. Get the two live recordings, one from Panther Hall in Houston, the other from Birmingham if you want to see the light.
It is interesting that these country side are a triumph of JLL as a singer. he barely plays the piano on some selections, on the last selections he plays no piano at all, but these are all classics. Anyone around anywhere where any music was coming off a radio or a juke box anywhere during the late 1960s and eary 1970s heard these songs.
This is among Jerry's best. That means it is among the world's greatest.
Dont forget JLL is still rocking his life away at 66 years old he is still pounding that piano!

    5 out of 5 stars killer country.......2003-06-01

Jerry Lee finally made it to Finland 10 years ago. And the audience loved him. Not so much for his old rockers (his age started to show on those numbers) but for the real country tunes that he suddenly started to play. The audience in the huge Hartwall arena listened in awe: this was a man who had walked through hell and made a mess out of his personal life in the early 60's, then made a comeback and in the early 90's could still sing about heartbreak and being on the dole like nobody else on this planet. A stunning and captivating performance! And this album, this 2fer is just great, it has some of those songs he sang that night, like "What made Milwaukee famous" (we Finns love that one!)and the ironic "She even wake me up...". They say Jerry Lee was a bad boy. Maybe so, but he sure gave us some great music!

5 out of 5 stars 1950's British Humor Meets "The Daily Show".......2007-01-10

Combine John Stewart ("The Daily Show") with cabaret and set it in 1950's England -- you've got Flanders & Swan. Funny. Insightful. Cutting. Wise. Fun. How can you go wrong? The singing duo were a delight and their humor feels as timely now as it must have forty years ago. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite the best, but pretty good..........2006-06-25

Flanders and Swann were brilliant, witty songwriters who wrote acute but subtle satire (among other things). In spite of the title, this record is not a "Best Of" collection, but a repackaging of their two best-known albums, "At the Drop of a Hat" and "At the Drop of Another Hat." A lot of people don't realize that there were two recordings of "At the Drop of a Hat": the first, produced by George Martin for Parlophone, was recorded during its original run at the Fortune Theatre in London in the late '50s, and is much better than the Angel Records version recorded on Broadway. This reissue, unfortunately, uses the Broadway version, in which Flanders seems a little bored with the material (or perhaps unsure that the American audience will get some of the jokes) and tends to rush the punch lines. This collection also omits one of the best songs from "At the Drop of a Hat"(which certainly belongs on any CD with this title), the conscientious-objection allegory "The Reluctant Cannibal."

While this is well worth listening to, your money would be better spent on the original "Hats" in their complete form (with "Cannibal"), preferably the Martin-produced version, if it's still available.

    5 out of 5 stars wonderful!.......2006-03-15

This live recording of some of the best loved Flanders and Swann songs is truly a transport of delight!

5 out of 5 stars Funny and very English songs.......2003-06-05

Michael Flanders and Donald Swan composed and sang their own amusing songs, accompanied by Donald Swan playing the piano. Flanders was a large man in a wheelchair and Swan a slight man. Good natured, somewhat dry, very English lyrics, and somewhat dated as they were popular in the 1950s and 1960s. They did wonderful stage shows in those simpler times.

    5 out of 5 stars America's Disco Queen Gets SAW/PWL Flair.......2006-12-26

It was a match made in heaven. Take one part Disco Queen and mix it with three parts Hit Factory and you get absolute brilliance!! Yes, the masters of Euro-Pop/Disco/Dance--Stock, Aitken, Waterman have given Donna Summer a winning combination of soul, funk and spunk that just doesn't quit!

Along with the SAW/PWL roster of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Sinitta and Hazell Dean comes a wealth of sound fusion and brilliance that still lets Donna Summer's style shine clearly and unmistakably. Starting with the signature track, "This Time I Know It's For Real," you know this is SAW/PWL genius on full throttle. Donna kicks into even higher gear with her own brand of vocal punch and bite. It's all this song needs to place it in Eurodance and Eurodisco's Hall Of Fame.

Furthering the tradition, "Breakaway" and "Love's About To Change My Heart" are yet more of the prime samplings in the SAW/PWL brain trust. Gutsier and more emotionally charged, Donna manages to make these tracks her own yet still lets the SAW gloss make its mark.

This album is pure PLATINUM in every sense-made from the perfect equation!

Highlights include "When Love Takes Over You," "If It Makes You Feel Good" and "Whatever Your Heart Desires"

5 out of 5 stars Another Place - Another Hit!.......2006-03-02

Donna Summer has done it again. Another Place and Time is just what the doctor ordered for the hard core Donna fans all over the world. I first heared this recording back in the summer of 1989 while living in Atlanta GA. I was a fan from the very first time I heard Love To Love You Baby back when it was released in the early 70's. I've been listening ever sense.
I lost my copy of Another Place and Time in Hurricane Katrina. My salon was located on the beach in Biloxi and was completely wiped out by her fury. Needless to say that all of my cd's were taken with everything else. I'm in the process of re-building my cd collectiuon and this one was at the top of the list. If you've never heard this fantastic recording, you're missing Donna's optimum vocal range. This is the true Donna, doing what she does best - Sing! Play On Donna! All the Best! Stephen

It seemed forever for This Time I Know its for Real to make it
from the clubs to mass release..Rumored David Geffen refused
to release it, it's the best album Donna released in the 80's
Thank goodness for Atlantic Records...Loves about to Change my Heart is definitely one of her best after her heyday as the Queen of Disco..my memories of this song are very vivid with the amount of airplay it got in the LA area during my visit there Labor Day 1989...

5 out of 5 stars The very best Stock Aitken WaterWoman!!.......2005-08-31

In 1988, Donna Summer, on the advice of her husband, teamed up with then white hot UK production team Stock Aitken Waterman, resulting in this upbeat, fun, pop/dance album released in 1989.

Quite a few were horrified on hearing of the pairing (myself included), but it was a return to her dance roots after a series of experimental releases which were not fully embraced by most of her fans (except me, LOL!).

I loved the cover art with its startling whiteface and arty gown and hat, Donna's attempt to look like a Geisha girl, and a look at the other album photos show what fun must have been had in making the album. All the tunes are incredibly catchy and fun!

Opening track, the light hearted, bouncy Kylie sounding `I don't wanna get hurt' was a UK #7 hit.

The smash hit `This time I know it's for real' co written by Donna, was a US #7 Gold single and a UK #3, with a delightful video. This song was everywhere in '89.

`The only one' is pure euro pop, with powerful echo-ey vocals singing `don't break my heart/say I'm the only one, and a melancholic guitar solo. The chorus sounds dreamy, especially because of the stunning backing vocals. Great!

The title track `In another place and time' is the only ballad on the album. It starts off with gentle vocals which build up in power like a hurricane as the song progresses.

The horn laden, retro sounding `Sentimental' was co written by Donna and should have been a single.

My absolute favourite has got to be `Whatever your heart desires', a mid tempo yet bouncy number with a deep distinctive bass line and Donna starting off in a lower register, rising as the song progresses to a joyous sing-a-long chorus. Again, co written by Donna.

`Breakaway' is a beautiful, lilting mid tempo Caribbean influenced pop/R&B number about the sad end of a relationship.

Closing number is the retro sounding techno/pop of `Love's about to change my heart'. This song is classic Summer; starting off as a ballad a-la `Last dance', `On the radio', etc, before kicking in to a hi energy song with Donna blasting away, and a killer note at the end. Excellent video too! A UK top 20 hit and US hot 100 hit.

SAW did state that Donna's was the best voice they worked with and it shows, she really belts out on every song, breaking through the echo-ey vocal effects and programmed sounds. Definitely the best SAW produced album, and great ear candy!

      5 out of 5 stars Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24

If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.

      5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't it be lovely?.......2005-09-26

This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.

The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.

There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.

This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.

This is a fun disc to have.

      5 out of 5 stars A Successful Sequel.......2005-08-03

This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.

      4 out of 5 stars Delightful Listening.......1998-12-05

Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.
