Better With Age.......2004-08-31
Best latter-day album by 1 of the last classic pop singers.......2003-04-02
He started as an "old time" country singer in the 1940's. By the late 1950's, he had more or less switched to classic pop singing. An exception is his delightful CD "Cattle Call/Thereby Hangs A Tale" featuring some of the finest renditions of Western standards you'll find. By the '60's he was a chart topper of the highest order for 3 decades.
By the 1970's, musical quality in those still performing classic pop took a general nosedive to banal, largely due to boring orchestration and synthetic, thinned recorded sound, and sadly most of his records reflect this. You can't blame that on Eddy. Classic pop as a whole hasn't recovered. There are some happy exceptions, and this CD is one of them.
While the ochestrations here dodge between beautiful and acoustic and banal and synthetic, a good sound is achieved at times. There is one flimsy misfire, "Just One Time." Elsewhere the orchestration is generally effective and sometimes very good. The recording is unusually resonant and lush for a 1990 recording. What's much more important are the quality of the songs (incorrect listing given above). As ballads of a classic pop nature, they are good!
The truly wonderful thing about this record, however, is Eddy himself. Eddy is a warm, honest man, and the lack of fuss about him is one reason his sucess isn't more widely known. He did not crash and burn on drug habits, he married for the long haul, and he didn't mouth off. He was a forthright, kind soul, and still is in fact (84 and still around at the time of this writing). This does come across in this record and it does matter.
The perfect exaple is "To Have and To Hold" - a golden wedding anniversary gold mine of emotion, a truly lovely, sentimental ballad from a guy who actually knows what he is talking about.
My favorite is "Snowfall" - a very lovely song indeed.
His deep, rich voice is affected by advancing age here, but make no mistake, in this case it is all an advantage. His ability to sing effectively is not at question on this record. This approach might well have been followed more than it was, although that's hindsight talking. Regardless, we should all wish most singers trying to do love songs had Eddy Arnold's combination of genuine personalable warmth and sound technical vocal ability.
His qualities are in full evidence here, making it the last of his greatest recordings (barring a surprise return). I regret that effective classic pop is so rare today, and hearing this, you might too.
