First things first: The title is deceptive. Yes, these are super hits--but not necessarily for Nelson. Check the song list, because if you're looking for songs made famous by the jazzy cowboy, you'll likely be disappointed. A master of reinterpretation, Willie applies his skills to a list of favorites, turning them inside-out and coming up with wholly original versions. --Alexandra Russell

Amazon.com essential recording
Five producers are represented in this sampler of pre-superstar Willie, including RCA titan Chet Atkins. (For a more thorough overview of Nelson's RCA years, investigate The Essential Willie Nelson.) The great appeal of this 18-song collection, however, lies in its scope. By the time he'd signed with RCA in 1964, Nelson was established as a proficient Music City songsmith whose own recordings were frustratingly underappreciated. While the likes of "Nite Life," "Hello Walls," "Funny How Time Slips Away," and "Crazy" (all represented here) may have been country hits for others (Ray Price, Faron Young, Billy Walker, and Patsy Cline, respectively), young Willie's takes reflect his remarkable talents as a vocalist. Then, too, there are the likes of the obscure "Opportunity to Cry," as dark a song as ever came out of Nashville. Nite Life presents a trailbreaker in the making, providing a perspective on an essential phase in Nelson's development. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

An Eclectic and Visionary Collection.......2006-09-25
The early recordings of some of Willie's best known songs -- "Nite Life," "Crazy," "Healing Hands of Time," "Hello Walls" -- all benefit from the spare, open, and nuanced arrangements found here.
Willie's early rockabilly efforts are particularly successful -- "Rainy Day Blues" sounds a bit like early Mose Alison, and "Everything But You" could have fit easily onto a Johnny Cash or Elvis Sun Session recording.
Willie's bright and tasteful arrangement of "Bring Me Sunshine" -- perhaps the only song here that is not about a lost love and feeling blue and lonely -- clearly presages the work he would do a decade later with Booker T and the MGs on Stardust. I hope the album that track came off of is re-released in its entirety soon. Finally, his clever and economical songwriting style is highlighted in "One in a Row," one of his finest songs on an otherwise superlative album.
Fans of Willie would be well-served to pick up this early collection, it does not disappoint.

Whiskey River, take my mind.......2003-09-26
Before American country music went _entirely_ corporate-prefab (at least in Nashville), there was a little group of singers and songwriters that people dubbed the 'Outlaws'. Depending who you asked, this group tended to include at least Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Our Hero.
The tendency (with exceptions) was for these guys to be -- in contrast to the clean-cut down-home simple aw-shucks 'country boy' of popular fancy -- a bunch of rowdy long-haired hippie-redneck maverick-rebel-iconoclast good old bad old boys. It was speculated that they were occasionally less sober than judges, and it was even rumored that one or two of them might perhaps have smoked a little weed once in a while. Their voices were raw, they wore bandanas on their heads instead of around their necks, and their guitars were sort of twangy. The general impression was that you might not want your daughter to date them but they would probably be a helluva lot of fun to go drinking with.
Well, all right, that image was as carefully cultivated in its way as the one it was supposed to replace. But damn, these guys played _real_ country music, like Haink an' Loretty done. Turn on your local country radio station today and you'll hear the contrast at once.
Willie was and is the very coolest of this crew. By the measure of coolness alone, he stands in a class _almost_ by himself -- 'almost' because J.J. Cale and Neil Young also exist. In his way he's every bit as iconoclastic (and even surreal) as Neil. Like Neil, he's something of an acquired taste. And like Neil, he's neither bound by nor terribly interested in our quaint musical conventions and the artificial lines we like to draw between allegedly different types of music. In fact, he might well object to my describing even his early stuff as 'country'.
This particular CD collects most (not all) of his cream-of-the-crop 1980-and-earlier material. It doesn't replace (say) _Red-Headed Stranger_. But it will (a) introduce you to this living legend if you haven't heard much of him before, and (b) provide you a handy disc to pop into your player when you just want to listen to your favorite songs.
The older I get, the more I find myself looking back on the artists I've listened to for the past forty years and discovering which ones really have staying power. Somewhat to my surprise (since I never really considered myself an avid fan of his), Willie is wearing much, much better than most of them.
You Can Do Much Better.......2002-07-13
